Rothko-inspired “Red” Now Playing at Goodman Theatre

Mark Rothko fans rejoice as Red is now playing at Goodman Theatre.  Just beginning its run over the weekend, Tony Award-winning Red chronicles the well-known Abstract Expressionist painter best known for his “pulsating” color field paintings.

Although Rothko’s style of work varied throughout his career, his most recognizable pieces are his large canvases known for their rich, vivid color combinations and blurred edges.  The lush color field paintings seem to convey a certain energy.  Depending on the color(s), some paintings exude a sense of calmness, while others seem to pulsate with opposition.

Focusing on Rothko’s two-year struggle to complete a lucrative set of murals for Manhattan’s exclusive Four Seasons restaurant while dealing with his young assistant and other obstacles, Red presents a snapshot of this brilliant artist at the height of his career.  Hailed as “intense and exciting” by The New York Times, Red will run through October 23.

This Thursday, September 22, Goodman Theatre invites Chicago artists and art enthusiasts to the Shades of Red event.  Participants will meet acclaimed actor Edward Gero, who will discuss his preparation for the lead role.  A selection of red wines and artful hors d’oeuvres will be served.  A limited number of tickets are still available, click here for more information
