Zolla/Lieberman Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Zoom In: Recent Paintings by Xiaoze Xie. For more than 20 years, Xiaoze Xie has painted folded edges of newspapers and front pages to preserve moments in history in a time of high-paced media and shortened news cycles. Fragmented imagery of civil war, protest and humanitarian crisis detail a mercurial political climate and urges us to dig deeper and investigate. His work draws attention to the suppression of information and varied degrees of transparency in a media landscape often rife with bias and misinformation.

For his solo exhibition with the gallery since 2008, Xie presents a selection of recent paintings from The Silent Flow of Daily Life, Fragmentary Views and Both Sides Now, three related series that offer different perspectives on newspapers as a loaded subject to consider time, memory and history.

Xiaoze Xie received his Master of Fine Art degrees from the Central Academy of Arts & Design in Beijing and the University of North Texas. Xie has exhibited extensively in the US and internationally. He has had solo exhibitions at the Bates College Museum of Art in Maine (2012), Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon (2011), Knoxville Museum of Art in Tennessee (2011), Modern Chinese Art Foundation in Gent Belgium (2007), Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona (2000), among others. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Anren Biennale: Today's Yesterday in Sichuan (2017), The 3rd Nanjing International Art Festival in Nanjing (2016), The 1st Xinjiang International Arts Biennale in Urumqi (2014), Fragmentary Narratives at the Changsha City Museum (2015), and Shu: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art at the China Institute Gallery in New York and Seattle Asian Art Museum (2006-08).  Xie's work is in the permanent collection of such institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, San Jose Museum of Art and the Oakland Museum of California. Xie received the Painters and Sculptors Grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation (2013), Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2003) and artist awards from Phoenix Art Museum (1999) and Dallas Museum of Art (1996). Xie is the Paul L. & Phyllis Wattis Professor of Art at Stanford University.

Xie's solo exhibition, Eyes On: Xiaoze Xie at the Denver Art Museum, is now on view through July 8, 2018.
