Presented by: Tonika Lewis Johnson, Judy Natal, and Derrick Woods-Morrow with moderator Joan Giroux

A panel discussion with Tonika Lewis Johnson, Judy Natal, and Derrick Woods-Morrow moderated by Joan Giroux

How do artists behind the lens frame the seen and unseen aspects of trauma as it affects bodies both corporeal and terrestrial? This panel examines the practices of photographers whose projects connect the dots between the evidence and the outcomes of experiencing expectations of idealized body normativity, systemic racism, policies of oppression, and environmental abuses at macro and micro scales. Photographic images, video, performative works, and multimedia projects present and capture moments of siege and respite from tension—suggesting relationships between the personal and political, the local and global, and maladies of the human body and the terrestrial environment. These artists also put forth possibilities for new paradigms through their projects and put in place visions for healing and reconciliation.
