Youth Art Speaks

Saturday, Mar 7, 2020 12 – 1 pm

Catherine Edelman Gallery invites local high school students to read their writing that addresses school gun violence and student activism in our next Art Speaks.

Join us Saturday, March 7 to hear young writers read work on the themes found within our current exhibition Bettina von Zwehl: Meditations in an Emergency. This exhibition features von Zwhel's latest portrait series inspired by the teenage die-ins that were staged shortly after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. These seventeen portraits honor the number of victims of the school shooting on Valentine's Day, 2018, and serve as a testament to the endurance and practice of protest and teen activism.

Art Speaks takes place in the gallery every second Saturday from 12:00 - 1:00 pm. This new year-round initiative invites local writers and poets to read pieces they have written based on the theme present in the exhibition on view, providing a venue for local writers to share their work. Our goal is to encourage and stimulate creative expression in an interdisciplinary setting, offering an opportunity for local creatives to collaborate and form connections. The works being read will range from poetry to fiction, experimental to narrative. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
