“Representation of the world, like the world itself, is the work of men; they describe it from their own point of view, which they confuse with absolute truth.”

- Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 1949

"I call these new paintings Value Studies because it's a play on a basic painting and drawing exercise while simultaneously referring to the content of my work; these paintings are meant to give value and visibility to the many women and works that have been largely omitted from the dominant narrative of the Hudson River School. The act of copying "important" paintings, another basic painting exercise, functioned historically as a learning tool and a way of paying homage. By copying the works of these women, and intentionally leaving my paintings in progress, I hope to make visible the act of historical recovery and acknowledge it as never finished."

– Anna Plesset, 2021
