Artists across Chicago have been responding to the impact of the public health and political crises almost in real-time, creating work that both intervenes in and transforms our understanding of the events around us. Presented by Chicago Humanities Festival, this panel of contemporary artists talks with art historian Greg Foster-Rice about how their work is meeting this moment—and how it connects to artistic responses during previous periods of discord. Join Foster-Rice along with Chicago artists Bob Faust, Sadie Woods (and more) in a conversation about the role of art and the artist in times of crisis.

Bob Faust is the principal and creative director for Faust, a Chicago-based design studio with a focus on cultural branding. He is also the professional and personal partner of artist Nick Cave. Together, the two recently opened a dynamic, multi-use creative space in Chicago called Facility. Faust creates bespoke wallworks, which function variously as visual art installations and frameworks for meditative experiences. Faust has been recognized as a design leader nationally and internationally by publications and institutions such as Communication Arts, Printand How magazines, the Society of Typographic Arts, the London Creative Competition, and Under Consideration. He currently serves on the Cultural Advisory Council for the City of Chicago, Chicago Dancemakers Forum Board of Directors as well as the School of the Art Institute’s Fashion Council and recently sat on the board of directors for both AIGA Chicago and Riverside Arts Center.

Award winning artist Sadie Woods has showcased her talents everywhere from academia to nightclubs, boutiques to museums. As a multidisciplinary artist, curator and deejay, Woods’s work focuses primarily on social movements and resistance, and producing collaborations within communities of difference. She also deejays under the moniker Afrodjia. Publications include Harald Szeemann Méthodologie Individuelle published by JRP Ringier with Le Magasin—Centre National d’Art Contemporain de Grenoble, in collaboration with the Department of Curating Contemporary Art, Royal College of Art, London. She is a 2020 recipient of the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events Esteemed Artist Award. Woods currently works as a faculty member at the School of the Art Institute, Residents Orchestrate Project Manager at the Chicago Sinfonietta, and resident deejay on Vocalo 91.1FM and Lumpen Radio 105.5FM.

Greg Foster-Rice, PhD is Associate Professor of the History of Photography at Columbia College Chicago. He is the curator of The Many Hats of Ralph Arnold: Art, Identity & Politics at the Museum of Contemporary Photography and editor of the accompanying book, both of which feature artworks that were in Violence! in Recent American Art. Other recent projects include the exhibition The City Lost and Found: Capturing New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, which he co-curated at the Art Institute of Chicago.
