Artist Talk: Monica Kass Rogers

Thursday, Dec 15, 2022 7 – 8 pm

1310 Chicago Ave.
Evanston, IL 60201

“The Alley Project: Beauty in Entropy” features works from Rogers’ three-year exploration of Chicago’s more than 1,900 miles of alleyways and presents unexpected abstract views that showcase the “extra” in the ordinary.  “Beautiful sculptural shapes, deep textures, and abstract “paintings” made by scratches, graffiti-removal, and the weathering of time, were all there for the finding,” says Rogers, whose show gives a lingering glimpse of Chicago’s past, visible in layers of peeling paint, tilting garage doors, dumpster bins, and patched-over pylons. Her rules for the project were simple: To leave what she found undisturbed, to manipulate nothing, and to capture with her cameras only what was there. The resulting imagery is full of mystery, pareidolia, and whimsy.

The show opens Thursday, December 1st with a public reception Saturday, December 3rd from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm. Rogers will present a virtual artist’s talk on Thursday, December 15th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please register for this event on the Perspective Gallery website or by clicking HERE.

The show will close Saturday, December 31st.
