Conversation with David Opdyke and Lawrence Weschler

Sunday, Nov 3, 2019 5 – 6:30 pm

688 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Chicago, IL 60642

Join artist David Opdyke and cultural critic Lawrence Weschler for a conversation about Opdyke's piece, This Land, on display at Weinberg/Newton Gallery, starting November 3, 2019 through January 11, 2020.

When David Opdyke wanted to address climate change in his work, he found the perfect medium in vintage, hand-tinted postcards. Using their idyllic views of American landscapes as a canvas, Opdyke added apocalyptic painted imagery, from out of control fires to menacing beasts and written messages of doom. Five hundred of these miniature melodramas, organized into a crumbling mosaic, form his critically acclaimed artwork, This Land.

Presented in partnership with the Chicago Humanities Festival and the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Michigan, this event follows the Chicago Humanities Festival event David Opdyke: This Land, which takes place on November 3 at Columbia College, 3-4pm. More info about that event can be found here.
