The inaugural Door County Contemporary art fair, held in 2025, marked a groundbreaking moment for the Midwest art scene. This collaboration with PenArt drew artists, galleries, and guests from across the region and the country. With over 3,400 guests in attendance and 20 exhibiting galleries from across the nation, the fair delivered a dynamic, standout celebration of contemporary art.

From painters and sculptors to photographers, print-makers, and mixed-media innovators, the fair showcased a rich tapestry of artistic expression. Attendees also enjoyed a robust schedule of public programs, panel discussions, and artist talks, sparking conversations and forging relationships between artists, collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts. The event generated over $120,000 in art sales—a powerful testament to the growing support for a creative economy in the Midwest.

“Gallery participants shared a commitment to art of the region, to cosmopolitanism and rurality. The result was a production that was opposite of the market-driven, doctrinal spectacle of large art fairs whose competitiveness and exclusivity precludes place and congeniality, opting instead for ‘arcade frenzy,’” stated Paul Krainak’s article “Sub-Rural #49.5, Door County Contemporary Art Fair” for Bad at Sports

This overwhelmingly positive reception reinforced the vision of Door County Contemporary: to cultivate a grounded, welcoming, and high-caliber alternative to the standard art fair model. Thanks to the generous contributions of DCC’s partners, the fair is returning with inimitable works on display and peerless possibilities for art exploration.
