Echoes of the Afterlife
Selections from the distinguished John D. Nichols Collection of Ancient Chinese Tomb Pottery
The Golden Triangle presents Echoes of the Afterlife, a major exhibition featuring selections from the John D. Nichols Collection of ancient Chinese tomb pottery. Spanning more than two hundred pieces of terra cotta pottery and bronzes dating from 2000 BCE to 1000 CE, the exhibition showcases rare and historically significant objects discovered at archaeological sites throughout Northern China.
The collection includes vessels, human figures, animals, architectural models, and ritual objects originally created for burial and the afterlife. Many of these works have never before been publicly exhibited and represent one of the largest private collections of ancient Chinese tomb pottery shown in North America.
Collector John D. Nichols spent decades assembling the collection through acquisitions in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Europe, and the United States. Following his passing, the collection remained largely unseen until now.
The exhibition opens to the public on June 5, 2026, and will remain on view through November at The Golden Triangle in Chicago.
