Penn draws from an archive of collected apothecary bottles, building ornate forms with delicately wrought stoppers and cinched bottlenecks. Draped in cascading geometric patterns, the vessels seem to twist and move as supple bodies.
Penn pulls medicalized phrases promising miracle cures from bus benches and billboards, carving them into their ceramic surfaces. Living with chronic illness and pain, Penn is often the intended recipient of the message. The text invokes a modern-day snake oil salesman, their false promise of wellness and remedy for all that ail the mind, body, and soul. – Delia Luz Pelli-Walbert @delia_pelliwalbert
