Volume Gallery is thrilled to announce Flowers and Leaves, Christy Matson’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery, opening September 17th, from 5-8PM. Matson's new body of work was inspired by a box of inherited nineteenth-century textiles—lace, tatted fragments, woven cloth—passed down through generations of the artist's ancestors, many of them Quakers active in abolitionist, pacifist, and early feminist movements in Macedon, New York, a vital hub of the Underground Railroad. From these found remnants, Matson isolates floral and geometric motifs, layers them over oil pastel drawings and collage, and finally translates the compositions into meticulously constructed woven paintings with a Jacquard loom.
