Gina Costa views mobile photography not only as a convenience, but as a powerful creative tool that can enhance a photographer’s practice. Discussion of some of the most useful and robust apps that can accomplish this will be part of the presentation. This lecture is intended for any photographer interested in mobile technology as a complement to their current creative practice and workflow. The presentation will explore mobile photography as a world-wide art movement and look at work by some of the leading international mobile artists who are continuing to expand the discourse.

According to Costa, "Mobile or cellphone photography is part of the arc of the history of photography’s technical advancements. From the popularity in the early 1900‘s of the photo booth, to the evolution of the polaroid during the '50's and '60's, people have sought inexpensive and immediate ways of capturing the world around them. As technology has evolved, so too did the definition of what was considered a photograph. The cellphone camera has become the logical next step in this historical arc and has shifted the discourse and boundaries  of what we consider to be a photograph."

Gina Costa is a photographic artist, art historian and independent curator. She earned her graduate degree in art history from the University of Chicago and has worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
