Juror’s Statement

“What an honor and delight it was to spend time with so many amazing portfolios. Having five images and statements from each artist was a rich experience and it allowed me to consider the work more deeply. That being said, for some artists, it was their statement, or lack of, that tipped the scales and for others, it might have been a singular image that wasn’t quite as strong as the rest. The competition was fierce, so every aspect mattered. The work selected for the physical exhibition is all at a very high level of presentation and consideration–each beautifully carries the trifecta of intention, execution, and articulation. I was intrigued and moved by work that is at once personal and meaningful and expressed in new ways. I was also interested in the two sides of portraiture–the mirror and the window, with JK Lavin’s and Dave Jordano’s consideration of self and others.  The difficulty in selecting just 5 artists to have work hang on the walls is that many others who had fascinating and significant projects are not in the exhibition. But considering the overall portfolios from Filter members, I know there is an exciting and successful future for in store for this community. Thank you for the privilege of spending time with your photographs.”
