Represented artist Julie Cowan's newest show "Translucent Botanicals + Transparent Architecture" displays Julie's newest lithographic work, focusing on floral and architectural subjects. Her work explores the intersection of color, transparency and light, and will be on display at the gallery throughout the month of April.

As the title suggests, Julie's newest work focuses on two of her favorite subjects, architecture and florals.   However, it also displays a new development in Julie’s process.  She still begins with a lithograph based on a photograph. Then rather than coloring directly on the lithograph, she paints grid patterns on fabric-like Swedish paper using watercolor in jewel tones.

She lays combinations of these grids onto the lithograph until she finds a composition that pleases her, then glues them down.  The glue gives the grids a level of transparency which allows details of the underlying lithograph to shine through. The result is a lovely combination of geometry, color, and line.
