The Arts Club of Chicago is thrilled to announce Kamrooz Aram: Privacy, An Exhibition, the artist’s debut solo exhibition in the Midwest. Presenting paintings and sculpture made specifically for this context as well as select collage work, Aram intersects modernism with the decorative. The canvases feature varying iterations, of an original, roughly botanical vocabulary, that reflect the so-called minor arts like tile, carpet, and ceramics. Aram, who was born in Iran in a time of revolution and immigrated to the United States in the 1980s, approaches entrenched ideals of purity with skepticism. In his abstract painting, he consciously reclaims the “orientalist” reading of the decorative nature of objects, motifs, and expressions traditionally associated with the East.
