Nika Levando shares her experience working with South Side artists on three mural commissions over the last 9 years in the Hyde Park and Woodlawn neighborhoods, against the storied history of public art, the Wall of Respect, and Bronzeville.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Nika Levando has been a higher education professional for over 10 years. In her current role at the University of Chicago's Office of Civic Engagement, Nika is responsible for developing and advancing new initiatives and programs that seek to advance OCE’s strategic priorities, by working with leadership both within the office and across the University. A core part of her role is supporting academic partnerships, integrating community engagement strategy as a foundational component. Nika also co-leads the office’s Diversity and Inclusion committee as well as manages OCE’s arts and culture initiatives that seek to catalyze neighborhood reinvestment and strengthen partnerships with University departments and institutes, local community organizations, art institutions, and neighborhood partners. Outside of her day-to-day role, Nika is a cultural advocate, and has contributed to Chicago's arts ecosystem through board service, volunteerism, and community advocacy. Over the last two years, Nika has taught three adult continuing education courses in Art History as an adjunct lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received her Master's Degree in Art History, Theory, and Criticism.
