Multiple assemblages of time and space inform this collection of short films highlighting diverse women filmmakers and documentary forms. Themes such as cultural survival and resilience, race and trauma, history and historiography, women’s empowerment, and environmental violence speak to the indeterminacies and possibilities of our contemporary moment. #NUDOCS2019

Films:

The Women and the Sea (Dir. Cami Guarda, 15 min)

Two women navigate life and death at sea in a remote Chilean fishing village.

Redacted (Dir. Naeema Jamilah Torres, 18 min)

A Black filmmaker reflects on present-day struggles of marginalized people on a tour devoted to challenging conventional historical narratives through the legacy of a slave revolt.

In the Wake (Dir. Natasha Nair, 13 min)

A meditation on the lives of handloom weavers in Kerala, India and their resilience against the pressures of contemporary society and the forces of nature.

The Reversal (Dir Jennifer Boles)

The past speaks back to the present in this experimental archival-based film immersing viewers in the largely forgotten reversal of the Chicago River and its many ghostly entanglements.

Each night of NU Docs features a selection of new short documentaries, with the opportunity to engage with the makers and celebrate their accomplishments. Discover a new generation who are making exciting films that tackle a wide range of topics. Previous thesis films have gone on to play such prestigious festivals as Locarno, Slamdance, New Directors/New Films, AFI Docs, IDFA, et al.

Doors open at 6:15pm, light refreshments served during pre-screening reception.

Moderator Calum Walter is an artist working in sound and moving image and teaches in the Department of Radio, Television, and Film Program at Northwestern. His films have screened at the Berlinale, Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, FIC Valdivia, Vienna Independent Shorts, Images Festival, Slamdance and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. He is the recipient of a Harpo Award and a 2018 MacDowell Fellowship. His work has been covered by Filmmaker Magazine, Fandor, Reverse Shot, and Cinema Scope Magazine.
