Persephone: Extraction & Metamorphosis – A Time-Based Collective Experience presents a contemporary exploration of the myth of Persephone, a cyclical journey between the Underworld and the Upperworld: a descent into darkness and an emergence into the light of transformation. The myth explains the changing of the seasons, however the artists represent it through a modern lens of environmental change, labor, extraction, grief, and love. Visitors experience the myth not as a fixed narrative, but as a living passage shaped by the artists’ interpretations, where themes of loss, extraction, renewal, and collective possibility unfold through encounter, movement, and participation.
Through an open call, nineteen artists were chosen by originating artist Tria Smith with curator Tricia Van Eck to work in two Summer sessions exploring the myth of Persephone, a story both ancient and urgently contemporary. While each artist, performer, or collaborator contributes a distinct voice, no work is made in isolation. Projects evolve in tandem, shaped by dialogue, shared unfinished material, and the presence of others in the process. Each session culminates in performative events — Session One: June 27–28 and Session Two: July 25–26 — that guides audiences through the house, creating an experiential passage through Persephone's myth as it resonates with our present ecological, social, and spiritual realities. Extraction, here, is not only myth: it is the present condition of a warming, depleted earth, and transformation is not only Persephone's, but ours to make. In the midst of climate change, conflict, and widespread uncertainty, how do we move from extraction and self-interest toward collective transformation?
