Peter Lenzo: Sculptures

Opening: Sunday, Sep 18, 2022 2 – 3 pm
Sunday, Sep 18 – Oct 2, 2022

Terra Incognito Gallery is pleased to present the sculptures of Peter Lenzo. Peter sculpts his personal story through clay’s 3-dimensional plasticity. Intrigued by the 19th century southern pottery face jug tradition, Peter has created self-portrait face jugs that are clearly unique to his own personal interpretation of this long standing southern folk art tradition.

Peter Lenzo’s face sculptures are symbolic representations of his emotional response to the debilitating effects of epileptic seizures that he experiences as a result of a 1977 bike accident. Lenzo’s titles of his pieces are part of the story., for example, “Helmet Head” (due to him having to wear a cushioned helmet on a regular basis), “Seizure in the Garden”,  “Conjoined Twins”, or  “I forget today more than I remember in 100 yesterdays”.  On the back of the head Peter inscribes his signature and date the piece was made.  Sometimes he will inscribe a saying or what he is feeling and thinking at the moment, much like a personal diary.
