Wednesday, Jul 13, 2022 1 – 2:30 pm

927 Noyes St. Studio 222, Evanston, IL 60201

Meet at Kavi Gupta Gallery, 835 W. Washington Blvd. 2nd floor, Chicago

With two gallery spaces on Washington St. and one on Elizabeth St. as well as a space in New Buffalo, MI and an additional warehouse to open in Chicago, Kavi Gupta Gallery has become one of Chicago’s premier showcases for contemporary art. Take this special opportunity to meet artist Sherman Beck, one of the ten original members of AFROCOBRA, a foundational Black arts collective formed on the South Side of Chicago in 1968. Discover how Beck brings together abstraction, representation and visually complex patterns in his richly colorful paintings and hear what inspires him. Find out about the AFROCOBRA movement, its tenets, its influence, and how it evolved. We will also discuss Dark was the Night, Cold is the Ground, an installation exhibit by Atlanta-based artist Michi Meko, who explores the paradoxes and contradictions that have shaped his personal history as a southern Black American using large-scale mixed media abstractions.
