Understanding Chicago Neighborhoods in History and Today: The Color Tax

Thursday, Apr 29, 2021 5 – 6 pm

688 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Chicago, IL 60642

Join Facing History and Ourselves, in partnership with Weinberg/Newton Gallery, for a virtual film screening and conversation with filmmaker Bruce Orenstein. His film, The Color Tax: The Origins of the Modern-Day Racial Wealth Gap, examines the history of homeownership "contracts" and their devastating impact on Black families and communities in Chicago in the years following World War II. Register to attend the event here.

We also invite you to a talkback session with filmmaker Bruce Orenstein immediately following the film screening. Please join us on zoom after the formal program ends at 6 PM CT for a discussion and Q&A session that will dig deeper into this history. You can email chelsea_bilek@facinghistory.org to RSVP for the talkback.

Facing History and Ourselves uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate. This event is part of its project to develop a curricular unit exploring the racial history of neighborhood formation and development, which is fundamental to understanding the historically rooted inequities that students in Chicago experience in their lives today.
