Valerie Carberry on Ellen Lanyon: A Bit of Magic

April 8 – 12, 2021

Access the online viewing room on Thursday, April 8 by visiting EXPO’s fair portal, or explore the exhibition next week on Gray Viewing Rooms. The fair opens to the public April 9.

Join Gray Partner Valerie Carberry for a virtual dialogue spanning the life and work of Ellen Lanyon. Reflecting on her relationship with the late artist, Carberry discusses Lanyon's practice citing examples from the online exhibition, A Bit of Magic.

Gray is pleased to participate in EXPO CHGO ONLINE, Expo Chicago’s latest digital exposition featuring five days of virtual programming. For the online edition, Gray presents Ellen Lanyon: A Bit of Magic, a solo exhibition of paintings from the Estate of Ellen Lanyon, sold to benefit the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Often discussed in relation to Surrealism and Magic Realism, Chicago painter and printmaker Ellen Lanyon (1926 - 2013) is celebrated for her fantastical and meticulously crafted still-life compositions. A reflection of her own private mythology, Lanyon’s juxtapositions of exotic specimens from the natural world with everyday household objects subvert ideas of domesticity and offer mysterious new narratives both playful and sinister.
