Where I Sleep brings together photographers exploring the many ways we connect to the spaces we call home. Through different photographic practices and perspectives, the artists consider home as a place of memory, intimacy, observation, and story.
Special performance by Renata Escamilla
In the “Reunión Semilla” for their work Madre Patria, guided by the thought of Yásnaya Elena Aguilar Gil, Renata looks at recipe books as a tool of the nation-state used for its violent creation, reproduction, and perpetuation.
Renata Escamilla Vivian (b.2001) was born and raised in Estado de México and Mérida, Yucatán. They currently live in Chicago, Illinois. They believe in self-pedagogy as an emancipatory tool. This does not mean learning in isolation, but learning in communality with self-responsibility. They are currently researching disciplinary institutions and their overarching containers through archives, fibers, installation, and performance. Their family upbringing in México informs their current research of the domestic space as a disciplinary institution that produces notions of gender. They think of performance as “Reuniones Semilla,” study groups that offer us the opportunity to think together.
