Wright Around Chicago - World Heritage TourThursday, Oct 10, 2019 9 am – 4 pm
“It gets you into magnificent places… by the end of the day you can frequently identify the Prairie School design and Wright’s influence in the architecture of the buildings you’re seeing.”
Frank Lloyd Wright’s paramount architectural achievements have recently received UNESCO World Heritage designation. Wright Around Chicago – World Heritage Tour takes you to two of the designated sites in the Chicago area, Unity Temple and Robie House, magnificent buildings of the Prairie period. The tour also includes Wright’s Home and Studio, the birthplace of American architecture, where both World Heritage sites were designed.
Begin the coach tour at the spectacular Light Court remodeled by Wright in The Rookery, an early Chicago skyscraper. Then head to suburban Oak Park, which boasts more Wright residences than anywhere in the world. Experience Unity Temple, which is Frank Lloyd Wright’s only surviving public building from his Prairie period.
Tour the famed Home and Studio, Wright’s home which also served as his design laboratory where he experimented with space and form. Before enjoying lunch at Oak Park’s perennial favorite, Winberie’s, explore the surrounding Historic District with one of our interpreters.
Take in the spectacular city skyline as you travel along scenic Lake Shore Drive to historic Hyde Park for a tour of the magnificently restored Frederick C. Robie House, Wright’s best-known Prairie masterpiece and a precursor of modernism in architecture.
The excursion will end at The Rookery Building, where we will raise a glass of Prosecco to celebrate Frank Lloyd Wright’s enduring legacy, now internationally recognized for all time.
