Our Biennial is one of the Midwest’s largest and most prestigious juried exhibitions, offering artists an opportunity to have their work viewed by three talented curators: Chanelle Lacy, Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie, Joe Lanasa, Director/Founder of Fulton Street Collective, and Cortney Lederer, Public Art Consultant and Educator. Our Biennial will be promoted and viewed by hundreds of visitors, including gallerists, curators, and collectors. Cash awards and cash equivalents will be presented at the artists’ reception. Awards, which may include Best of Show and Juror’s Merit categories, are given at the jurors’ discretion. From the final pool of selected applicants, the jurors will also award 3 artists, who have not exhibited at the Evanston Art Center in the past 5 years, with the opportunity to be included in an exhibition in our galleries. Chanelle Lacy is a curator, cultural producer, and Reiki Master. She is also the Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie and the fearless leader of EarlyWork! Passionate about bringing ambitious, rigorous, and challenging projects to life, Chanelle works closely with artists both emerging and established to expand not only their creative practices but the art historical canon at large. Her passion for art and her commitment to amplifying underrepresented and marginalized voices make her a true champion of the arts. Most recently she produced SKIN + MASKS, a blockbuster exhibition crafted in collaboration with musician and activist Vic Mensa, centering works by contemporary artists exploring the elusive essence of identity. Originally presented in a classic gallery setting, SKIN + MASKS traveled to Chicago’s famed Magnificent Mile for a six-month pop-up exhibition presented in partnership with EXPO Chicago and the City of Chicago. In 2021 she curated Realms of Refuge, a group exhibition focused on the alchemical processes that enable us to transcend our earthly entanglements to reach higher states of consciousness, embodiment, and expression. Chanelle forged her path in the arts working at a contemporary gallery where she lent her vision to the program for six years. During three years of her tenure, she held the position of Director. Chanelle continues to be a force, serving as a trusted advisor. Cortney Lederer is a public art consultant and educator with over twenty years of experience managing artistic programming for foundations and organizations. Cortney has curated installations by notable artists such as Jacob Hashimoto (2019) and Olafur Eliasson (2021) at th Willis Tower and Luftwerk at the landmark Chicago Board of Trade Building (2024). She served as the art advisor for E(art)H Chicago, (2023) an initiative supported by the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF), providing $700,000 in grants to artists to inspire new ways of thinking about environmental responsibility in neighborhoods across Chicago. This summer, she launched a new public art initiative for the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (2024) connecting people to nature through 30 art installations across the city. Cortney is currently serving as the public art consultant for the Chicago Park District to design and manage an RFP for artist responses to contested monuments on parkland through installations, onsite programming, and activations. She is also the Public Art Consultant for the City of Wichita, managing three, new public artworks for the Arkansas River Improvement Project. Most recently, she worked with a team of planning consultants hired by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) to develop a community-engaged, pilot cultural and historical marker program. This pilot program celebrates the city’s cultural heritage by sharing untold stories and events through artist-designed markers. Cortney is an Associate Professor, Adj., in the Arts Administration and Policy department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and serves on the board of Arts of Life and Every House Has a Door. Joe Lanasa is one of the founding members and the current director of the Fulton Street Collective. He created FSC in late 2002, along with his amazingly talented friend, Anna Fermin. Their original vision still holds true today, which is to host a community of creative, talented people, and give them the resources they need to support and cultivate their art so that they can enrich the lives of others and become part of the greater community. Joe is also a street poet, songwriter, rock musician singer, and guitarist, performing in mostly Chicago-area clubs for over ten years now. His musical influences include a crazy blend of brilliant performers, including Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Scott Momenthy, Iggy Pop, early Springsteen, Marty Robbins, Elvis, Van Morrison, and Bob Marley. Impressionist artist Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894)—known and beloved by many Art Institute visitors for his monumental painting&nbsp;Paris Street; Rainy Day—takes center stage in this major exhibition exploring the very personal interests and relationships that shaped his world. Caillebotte was unique among his Impressionist peers. At a time when modernity was synonymous with fashionable young women and new forms of entertainment, he focused instead on a more intimate and individualized sphere: his family and friends, his fellow sportsmen, the bourgeois pedestrians strolling in his neighborhood, and the workers who came to his house or whom he observed in the street. Despite being born into the wealth built by his father, Caillebotte resisted the idleness associated with the leisured class. He was not only an active member of the Impressionist group but also participated in several activities as a high-level amateur, including rowing, gardening, and sailing. In all of his pursuits, Caillebotte gave his all, taking on the role of leader, organizer, and sometimes financier; he also captured these passions in paint, whether documenting the toil of boating, the serenity of tending a plant, or the concentration of a card game. Caillebotte was equally invested in his personal relationships, both familial and non-familial—and again these relationships, especially with the males he interacted with as son, brother, employer, colleague, and friend—are the focus of many of his artworks. One sees in multiple paintings his two brothers and other family members as well as a wide circle of friends, often depicted in Caillebotte’s own home—in a favorite chair, by a recognizable window, or on an often-portrayed sofa. Most intimately, and most unusually for the time, Caillebotte also painted nude men in the privacy of their bath.&nbsp; This exhibition, which opened at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in October 2024, includes more than 120 works—paintings, works on paper, photographs, and other ephemera from throughout Caillebotte’s career. In addition to recognizable works like&nbsp;Floor Scrapers&nbsp;and the Art Institute’s&nbsp;Paris Street; Rainy Day,&nbsp;the show presents lesser-known but pivotal works like the Musée d’Orsay’s recent acquisition,&nbsp;Boating Party, and the Louvre Abu-Dhabi’s&nbsp;The Bezique Game, as well as many works from private collections that are rarely seen by American audiences.&nbsp; Together, these works open a new window onto Caillebotte—as a complex figure with many interests, as an Impressionist who painted like no other Impressionist, and as an artist who captured his own, very distinct Paris. <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=18663075f4&amp;e=95b957c616" target="_blank">Wafaa Bilal: Indulge Me</a> opens February 1 and runs through October 19, 2025.Indulge Me is a major survey of renowned artist Wafaa Bilal (b. 1966, Najaf, Iraq; lives in New York, NY). Crucially, the exhibition will take a comprehensive look at Bilal’s myriad practice, highlighting the development of his work across decades and placing it in conversation with broader art histories. It will also explore cultural cannibalism—that is, how culture (specifically the culture of the other) is used, disassembled, and consumed.Working in performance, sculpture, and with online and interactive technologies, Bilal’s interdisciplinary practice investigates the dynamic between international and interpersonal politics while highlighting the tension between the United States, which he has deemed the “comfort zone,” and the “conflict zone” of Iraq. Through methods such as using his own body to interrogate notions of power and using innovative technologies to rectify acts of cultural destruction, Bilal shows us what it means to consciously engage across cultures while highlighting negative global implications of consumption, exploitation, and profiteering.The exhibition will be organized into five immersive sections, each of which focuses on a major work from Bilal’s practice. Artworks on display include a reconstruction of a room in Chicago’s FLATFILE Gallery that the artist confined himself to for a month-long performance in Domestic Tension (2007). During this performance, Bilal invited the audience to shoot at him with a paintball gun that was operated virtually by viewers who could also interact with him via camera feed and live chat. Over the course of thirty days, a total of 60,000 shots were fired by "shooters" from 128 countries. Also included in the MCA exhibition is a large-scale, towering video displaying images from Bilal’s year-long performance 3rdi (2010–11), wherein Bilal surgically implanted a camera into the back of his head that, every minute on the minute, captured photographs. The photos included in the MCA display will correspond to the minute, hour, and day they were taken.&nbsp;Wafaa Bilal: Indulge Me will also present Thumbsat Satellite (2024), which comprises a golden bust of Saddam Hussein fixed to a satellite and launched into Earth’s orbit as part of the exhibition. Developed as a critique of the former Iraqi president’s rumored desire to launch a bust of himself into space, the work will also feature a number of in-gallery components, including a model of the satellite and bust and a way for visitors to track the artwork’s location through live-captured images before it is destroyed upon re-entry into the atmosphere.&nbsp;Additionally, the exhibition will feature In a Grain of Wheat: Cultivating Hybrid Futures in Ancient Seed DNA, Bilal’s response to ISIS’s destruction of the Winged Bull of Nineveh sculpture, or Lamassu, in 2015. The piece involves inserting high-resolution 3D scans of the sculpture into the DNA of heirloom Iraqi wheat seeds. Wafaa Bilal: Indulge Me

Pistachios is collaborating with Precious Collective to host an exhibition titled Things Unsaid, which will be at Pistachios from August 14, 2025 to October 26, 2025 before traveling to Munich Jewelry Week in 2026. The exhibition features 35 members from Precious Collective, an international community of artists that are bound together by their ambiguous definitions of what exactly ‘precious’ is in relation to jewelry. Conceptually, the exhibition will explore: What is a tangible manifestation for the things unsaid? How can we extend the voice of materiality through acts of making? Where does the metaphysical influence the language of jewelry? This is the first time Precious Collective will be featured in the United States. On Thursday, August 14, 2025 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm we'll be hosting a reception to celebrate the exhibition with Lynne Speake, the Founder and Creative Director of Precious Collective, in attendance.&nbsp;

<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.hydeparkart.org/" target="_blank">Hyde Park Art Center</a>, the renowned non-profit hub for contemporary art located on Chicago’s vibrant South Side, announces&nbsp;Yasmin Spiro: Cornerstone,&nbsp;the first major solo exhibition of the Chicago-based Jamaican artist, and related free public programming. Inspired by Spiro’s background, the exhibition presents the artist’s ongoing exploration of the intersections between land, body, memory, and architecture, inviting the audience to contemplate the physical and psychological effects of histories of migration and colonialism. Layered with aspects of Jamaica’s ecology, architectural structures, land ownership, and socio-political history,&nbsp;Cornerstone&nbsp;emphasizes the hybridity of the island's culture and people, via immersive new works including sculptures, sound and scent work, and weavings.&nbsp;Yasmin Spiro: Cornerstone&nbsp;is curated by Allison Peters Quinn and runs&nbsp;from April 19 to November 2, 2025; admission is free. The title work&nbsp;Cornerstone&nbsp;is a new, towering fort-like structure made with cast forms and textile walls designed for visitors to enter. In construction, the cornerstone refers to the first-laid stone of a building, to which all other stones are positioned in relation. Set up at the center of the gallery, the installation—created during Spiro’s 2024 Jackman Goldwasser Residency at the Art Center—connects to three surrounding bodies of work in the gallery, serving as a metaphor for home and the feeling of being grounded in an identity that is shaped by a homeland. Combining burlap, wood, rope, mixed-media cast, and ceramic forms, video, and rural sound, Spiro composes a sensorial environment that elicits comfort and belonging. The three related bodies of work combine old and new elements from Spiro’s practice within texture, muted organic tones, and sensory-rich materials. The north end of the gallery will feature a 17 ft. long burlap weaving embedded with handmade ceramic bells, found driftwood, and rope that projects a complex lattice of shadows on the wall, offering a new perception of space. On the west wall, six mounted panels align rope compositions next to flesh-toned ceramic tiles made during Spiro’s Arts/Industry residency at Kohler Co. Finally, ropes descend from the ceiling on the south end of the gallery and extend outward, forming a suspended alternative architecture. Through these works, Spiro contemplates the fluidity of land and water, and how people’s relationship to land is shaped by migration, colonial histories, and national identity. To the artist, buildings are not simply physical structures, but spaces that anchor human experiences, culture, and history. “Materiality is central to the meaning of the work,” explains Spiro. “The cast forms in&nbsp;Cornerstone&nbsp;create an organic, almost fossilized presence that simultaneously emerges from and erodes back into the earth, reflecting how landscapes shift and histories accumulate over time. Pigmented in shades of pink, their fleshy, shell-like tones correspond to the cast porcelain on the walls, referencing the natural landscapes of Jamaica and the layered histories embedded in them. These forms speak to the way places shape us and how we carry them within us.” This exhibition is part of an ongoing annual series of large-scale artworks commissioned by Hyde Park Art Center, which in the past included new works by Edra Soto, Faheem Majeed, and Lan Tuazon among others. The exhibition will be documented and enhanced through a publication with essays by critic and writer Seph Rodney and curator Allison Peters Quinn. Through her sculptures and installations, she addresses issues of socio-economic imbalance within the framework of urban development and architecture – often through the lens of Caribbean culture. Spiro works in a variety of media from wood, ceramic, natural and synthetic fibers and textiles to performance and video, exploring materiality while investigating the relationship between the body, nature, and the built environment. She attended Pratt Institute and held residences at the Dora Maar Foundation, The Kohler Arts and Industry residency, Vermont Studio Center, and the Chicago Artist Coalition. She currently resides in Chicago. Apparent Paths&nbsp;brings together a new series of weavings by&nbsp;Emily Frances Winter. These building portraits utilize the textile language of plaids, stripes and gradients to render sky, earth and architecture. Woven while in residence at the Icelandic Textile Center (Blönduós, Iceland) and Praxis Fiber Workshop (Cleveland, Ohio), the works represent a series of singular moments when light and form and shadow lined up in such a way as to bring the simultaneous specificity and universality of the built environment into view. At RAM’s Wustum Museum Contemporary art jewelry often investigates cultural, social, personal, and environmental topics. Distinguished by a vocabulary of diverse media from precious metals to recycled objects, it also reflects artists’ interests in material exploration and notions of wearability. RAM’s holdings in art jewelry—with examples from artists from across the globe at varying stages in their careers—have grown rapidly. Artistic self-consciousness often drives those who make work considered “art jewelry,” though this is just part of a much larger conversation. Makers explore a wide variety of issues, materials, and themes, while utilizing media—both precious and non-precious—that encourage the exploration of jewelry and its history. In this selection of seven artists of color from RAM’s collection, the emphasis is on materials not traditionally anticipated for use in jewelry, such as polymer, safety pins, and silicone. While there are theoretically no limitations to the materials any artist can use, there have historically been barriers to some artists of color in the United States—indirect or otherwise—to access tools, materials, or studio spaces. At this moment, more and more efforts are being made to support and encourage the work of artists of color while drawing attention to existing work.Following the&nbsp;<a style="color: var(--link_color);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.ramart.org/exhibit/nicole-acosta-hoops/" target="_blank">solo exhibition of Nicole Acosta</a>, which featured photographs of people of the global majority wearing hoop earrings, this exhibition emphasizes an idea that RAM often explores: how adornment can go beyond decoration to become a symbolic and layered space for meaning. While some of the work in this exhibition has been shown in the galleries at RAM, all of these pieces are making their debut at Wustum. RAM Showcase: Focus on Adornment

The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art presents the first monographic exhibition in forty years of the work of Walter Osborne, one of Ireland’s most-heralded artists. The exhibition charts Osborne’s trajectory from his student days in Dublin and Antwerp through his sojourn in Brittany and his early practice in England before returning to his native city in 1892 to care for his niece and aging parents following the death of his beloved sister Violet. Through his depictions of Dublin’s streets, parks, public spaces, domestic interiors and gardens, countryside, and most importantly its people, a vision of a vibrant––if divided––Ireland emerges. Osborne’s experiences abroad and his commercial acumen helped establish Dublin’s unique brand of Modern painting rife with the possibility of change. Iconic works by the artist on loan from the National Gallery of Ireland, Hugh Lane Gallery, Hunt Museum in Limerick, Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, and private collectors in Ireland and the United States offer a rich tapestry of life and art in Ireland at the close of the nineteenth century.&nbsp;This exhibition is made possible by the Donald and Marilyn Keough Foundation with additional support from the J.
