Mariane Ibrahim is proud to present its first solo exhibition with Youssef Nabil,&nbsp;No one Knows but the Sky.&nbsp;Cinema forms the stage upon which the photographic and video work of Youssef Nabil unfolds. Within it, the history of Egyptian cinema coexists with his childhood memories of Cairo, shaped by the film posters of a country that remains a major center of popular culture. Through its images, sounds, and stories, Egyptian cinema has shaped tastes, morals, and even language across the Arab world for decades. Through cinema, Nabil encountered art for the first time, and it remains the lens through which he has continued to observe and register the many transformations of his native land.The artworks presented in this exhibition—one of which gives the exhibition its title, and where the video&nbsp;The Room&nbsp;is shown for the first time—offer a glimpse into the last twenty years of the artist’s practice, where his stylized films move alongside hand-colored images. His work draws from memory and migration, where forms remain fluid and continuously evolving. Kevin C. Lawler&nbsp;approaches painting through material and surface. With a background in traditional gilding and conservation, his work carries a strong sense of craft, where texture and process become central to the visual experience. David Hauptschein&nbsp;presents AI-based digital works that question authorship and image-making in the contemporary moment. Using artificial intelligence as both tool and collaborator, his work constructs layered, often unsettling visual narratives. Without Permission&nbsp;brings these practices into dialogue, where painting, process, and machine-generated imagery intersect. The exhibition resists fixed meaning, instead embracing transformation, tension, and the instability of form.

We will also have a reception on Wed., April 8 from 6-9 pm to celebrate the opening of the show. There will be a short program at the Saturday reception at 7:30 pm to honor Tony. Family members will be present, and his adult children Max and Gaby will read from Tony's poetry. Tony Fitzpatrick was the beloved, brash, and bold artist, actor, and poet who died too soon at the age of 66 on October 11, 2025. He was a prolific collage artist and printmaker who loved the city of Chicago as well as birds, dogs, and regular folks. For years he has supported other artists and lifted them up. Before he died, we were working with him on this very special collage show. Tony selected most of the artists in this show because he said, “they are among the best.” This exhibit includes works by Lisa Barcy, Lou Beach, Monica J. Brown, Andrea Burgay, Tony Fitzpatrick, Glen Gauthier, Paul Loughney, Jack Poker, Nellie Seigel, and Paloma Trecka. Along with Tony’s work, there are several pieces in the show that were made in tribute to Tony. Many of the artists worked with or were mentored by him. The work in this exhibition showcases the myriad styles and subjects of contemporary collage revealing the dynamism of this art form. This exhibition explores personal memories, social commentary, and a diversity of materials. SoNa Chicago is proud to be a part of extending Tony’s legacy by showcasing contemporary collage artists and honoring him through this exhibition.

Jonathan Muecke’s sixth solo exhibition with the gallery opens Friday April 10, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. Muecke's practice is one of persistent material exploration yielding highly intentional forms.&nbsp;Through iterative cycles of observation, experimentation, and re-understanding—Muecke patiently tests material, scale, and form against one another. A.R.C. favors artists who have a strong, cohesive body of work, a clearly communicated vision of their show, and a well-written and thoughtful artist statement. ATHENA 2026 Solo Shows

Terumi Saito’s first solo exhibition with the gallery opens April 10, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. Saito combines backstrap weavings toned in natural dyes with handbuilt ceramics to create highly original forms. Drawn to the intimate connection between body, time, and material that backstrap weaving requires, Saito has made it the foundation of her practice—one of the earliest weaving technologies, it has been practiced across Asia and the Americas for millennia. She sees weaving as a living language, evolving, yet deeply connected to its origins, and a form of reflection, each work a record of time and energy spent.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to presentBetween Voice and Silence, an international group exhibition on view May 1 throughJune 28, 2025. The exhibition brings together three artists, Katya Lisova (Kyiv), MatviiVaisberg (Kyiv), Ira Bondarenko (Ann Arbor), whose works in textiles, printmaking, ceramics, and fiber examine empathy, resilience, and the endurance of cultural identity against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine.The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov(1990–2024), who was killed defending his country in January 2023, only months after the publication of his debut collection. His writing, which locates tenderness and humanity amid destruction, serves as a moral and artistic touchstone for the works on view.Between Voice and Silence&nbsp;takes its title Maksym’s poem “In that space between Voice and Silence” and alludes to the liminal space that defines wartime experience and the territory between what can be said and what is rendered unspeakable. The exhibition reflects on the limits and power of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. He appropriates images from contemporary artists who make architecture their subject, reconstructing them as monumental collages. These are imagined futures inspired by great industrial palaces built at the birth of modernism: the Crystal Palace, factories that housed new collective labor, the production sites that promised transformation. White space floods the compositions. Fragments hover. The scale creates immersive worlds you can step inside—flatness expands into depth. Building utopian space from contemporary art’s fascination with architecture, Brown turns art’s gaze at architecture back on itself. These are not pictures. Marshall Brown: Palaces and Prisons

Birdmilk is a Pilsen-based artist and muralist with a background in illustration and character design. Mostly known for his droopy eyed characters and "voluptuous" birds, Bird Milk has a wide variety of goofy characters that are created to put a smile on the viewer's face. His work can be seen on the streets of Chicago in the form of stickers and murals throughout the city. Jeff Pak is a Chicago based multidisciplinary artist who dreams of becoming a professional wrestler. UIMA Annual Benefit Gala

DOCUMENT is delighted to present&nbsp;Dabin Ahn’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, opening on Friday, March 27.Dabin Ahn (b. 1988, Seoul, Korea) lives and works in Chicago, IL. He creates paintings populated by flora, fauna, vessels, candles, and ceramic fragments, motifs that function as representations of the self. Ahn’s paintings also incorporate sculptural elements such as hand-built frames that part to reveal images along the canvas edge. Light plays a central role in the artist’s lexicon, suggesting an illuminating presence even when its source is hidden. These elements collectively blur the boundaries between the material and the imagined, evoking an emotional depth reflective of the human experience. Ahn received a BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Selected solo exhibitions include François Ghebaly, Los Angeles; OCHI, Los Angeles; Harper’s, New York; 1969, New York. Recent group exhibitions include Make Room, Los Angeles; Harper’s, East Hampton; and The Hole, Los Angeles. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GE; X Museum, Beijing, China.

Across painting, ceramics, and works on paper,&nbsp;Before We Knew Better&nbsp;gathers works that feel at once intimate and mythical, suspended at the intersection of memory, imagination, and observation.&nbsp;Before knowledge becomes fixed and ingrained, the world is encountered through instinct and emotion, narrative and storytelling. The works in&nbsp;Before We Knew Better&nbsp;echo this sensibility, evoking a time when the boundary between the real and the imagined was more diaphanous and permeable. Throughout the exhibition, flora, fauna, and landscapes are depicted across varied materials. Simplified forms, vibrant color palettes, and illustrative gestures imbue the works with a tone that feels both immediate and out-of-time. A close-cropped painting of a unicorn’s milky eye, ringed with fur, reflects a shooting star passing through the luminous sky. Insects and birds adorn intricately patterned vessels. Winding golden roads meander through softly-rendered mountains.&nbsp;Rather than depicting nature as a fixed or distant subject, the artists approach it as a living presence shaped by memory, experience, and intuition. Their works suggest environments where traces of human life appear alongside vast or mysterious forces: secret gardens, shifting terrains, and intimate moments of quiet grandeur that seem to exist just beyond the veil of ordinary perception.As the gallery’s second exhibition,&nbsp;Before We Knew Better&nbsp;continues Elise Seigenthaler Gallery’s interest in work that feels imaginative, and open-ended. In the North Gallery, Corbett vs. Dempsey is proud to present Suellen Rocca,&nbsp;Buy More Diamonds: Selected Drawings. This is the gallery's second exhibition with the artist and the first presentation of her work in Chicago since her death in 2020.One of the original Imagist artists, Suellen Rocca (1943-2020) was among the great originals in Chicago's contemporary art history. A member of the Hairy Who, Rocca exhibited with the group at the Hyde Park Art Center in the second half of the 1960s, activities that were given a detailed revisiting in the Art Institute of Chicago's 2018 exhibition&nbsp;Hairy Who? 1966-1969. Rocca's approach to composition, which often revolved around typological grids or scatterings of disparate, icon-like images, was one of Imagist art's most radical contributions. Even on canvas, these images were linear, drawn, as it were, in paint. Rocca's parallel drawing activities were central to her practice, and her works on paper, often very elaborate, are among her most incisive achievements. Full of humor, sometimes with a baudy, maudlin, or grotesque overtone, her "catalogue" compositions did indeed draw on commercial gazettes like the Sears catalog, but also on the cellular structure of comic strips and the multiplicitous spatial inventions of Hieronymous Bosch. In this rare roundup of some of Rocca's most outstanding drawings, CvsD presents a selection of works on paper from 1965-1991. John Stezaker, the British artist known for his groundbreaking conceptual collage cycles,&nbsp;debuts a new body of work&nbsp;at GRAY Chicago this spring. Titled&nbsp;Raft, the exhibition features a series of uncanny landscapes that mend together two images from the artist’s archives to create a single composition. Corbett vs. Dempsey is delighted to present Nicola Florimbi,&nbsp;Rooms. This selection of new paintings is the gallery's first exhibition with the artist.In Nicola Florimbi's paintings, domestic interiors are transformed into staged environments, solemn spaces of everyday&nbsp;intrigue, where exterior views appear sometimes vertiginously close, a mere step or two away from ritual interactions enacted by expressionless figures. These players and the curiously still moments in which they are suspended circumvent clear narrative, their distant gazes trapping tropes of family and school like bees in amber. Drawing on traditions of still life, genre painting, and psychological realism, Florimbi's canvases include references – both direct and oblique – to other artists, from Pieter de Hooch and Jean-August-Dominique Ingres to Balthus and Christina Ramberg. A kind of social geometry is plotted in these scenarios, relationships organized as positions in space, the incarnation of a system of power and knowledge, emotional inflection provided by means of a painterly hand.&nbsp;Nicola Florimbi (b. 1994) received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied at Rhode Island School of Design and Otis College of Art and Design. She has participated in numerous group shows, most recently&nbsp;Master Class, Secrist/Beach, Chicago.&nbsp;Rooms&nbsp;is Florimbi's solo debut. PATRON presents&nbsp;She is sitting on her own shadow, our first solo exhibition with Mexico City-based artist Manuela García (b. 1982, Mexico City, Mexico). García employs subtle adaptations of natural materials to hone physical perception of human space. Through her sculptural and painting practice García shapes intimate encounters between material and the human body–manipulating and repurposing architectural and physical elements to challenge understandings of reality and solidity.Raised in Medellín, García’s memories of an ever present threat of violence in an unstable socio-political terrain laid the conceptual ground for a visual language seeking to establish stability through material presence. García’s debut exhibition with PATRON centers a site-specific installation, an extension of&nbsp;Lineas, her large-scale sculptures, made from coils of metal wire, wrapped by hand in layer upon layer of felted black and white wool. Their soft, textile exterior belies their rigid, internal skeletal structure. Responding to the surrounding architecture, García unfurls and manipulates the form, catalyzing and releasing material tension against itself, allowing the line to cascade downward from a fixed point in the wall and organically weave through space. Her&nbsp;Lineas&nbsp;are both deliberation and liberation; at once drawings and sculptures that challenge the viewer to reconsider our own relationships to material, reality, and solidity.&nbsp;Emerging from García’s attempt at capturing the physical nature of memory are her painting series,&nbsp;El dolor en la mirada, encaustic paintings of dreamlike landscapes and amorphous figures. Through a reverse layering of wax and pigment, boundless, abstract forms emerge and dissipate within the 24”x 28” surfaces. Light filtering through the top layers of translucent wax illuminate and imbue the paintings with mystical presence the artist likens to “souls.” García’s mist-like compositions reveal themselves the way the memory of a dream might be recalled, and explore our own perception with and relation to physical spaces, offering no stable point of reference in which to orient oneself.&nbsp;By playing on the tensions between light and shadow, form and material, García examines our relationship to our physical surroundings and the ephemeral manifestations that offer evidence to presence.
