Young, who passed in 2010, was a prolific African American artist from the Overtown neighborhood in Miami, Florida. Self-taught, Young's work was often a blend of collage and painting/ drawing, utilizing discarded objects to tell the stories of the African American experience in the South. His work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), LACMA (LA), the County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and others, so it is incredibly special to have his work showing in our gallery (with FREE admission) during a limited two-weekend showing.&nbsp;Curated by David Gista (@dgista) and is in conjunction with the Larry T. OPEN STUDIO | Robin Malpass GallerySolo show: Robin Malpass: "Wastes of Wanderings: Sustainable Elegance"&nbsp;Friday, February 10th [ 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM ]Saturday, February 11th [ 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM ]Sunday, February 12th [ 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM ]. &nbsp;Robin Malpass solo show.&nbsp;She upcycles unconventional materials that are easily neglected as her painting paintbrush.Robin is a self-taught artist who has been actively painting for 20+ years. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group shows over the course of her career, and she is a visual arts member of the prestigious Arts Club of Chicago. Curated by David Gista&nbsp;Artist Statement: I see potential in broken and discarded objects. I find joy in transforming them into art. My paintings begin by applying a variety of composites, such as black lava and tempered glass to the surface. While working soft pastels or layers of acrylic over the textures I eschew brushes and palette knives for my favorite mark-making tools; my hands and my credit cards. Using a credit card to create art began as a symbolic act to put plastic to better use.
