<h2>Painting That Hung in a Chicago Convention Center Brings Unexpected Windfall</h2>

A lone painting by a celebrated contemporary artist turned into a windfall on Wednesday night for a small municipal agency in Chicago.

The painting,&nbsp;Kerry James Marshall&rsquo;s&nbsp;&ldquo;Past Times,&rdquo; sold for $21.1 million at Sotheby&rsquo;s in New York, nearly 900 times the $25,000 that the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority spent on it in 1997, and a record for the artist. In a statement, Lori Healey, the authority&rsquo;s chief executive, said the M.P.E.A. was &ldquo;thrilled&rdquo; by the auction results, adding that the price tag ended up &ldquo;far exceeding anyone&rsquo;s expectations.&rdquo;

Chicago-based artist Molly Z will begin work on a 3,200 square foot mural on the side of the Eau Claire Printing Building on June 3 as part of The Oxbow Hotel&rsquo;s first artist in residence program. The public is welcome to participate in the process during several events hosted throughout the residency &ndash; in addition to watching the image come to life over the roughly two-week project.&nbsp;

It is being exhibited for the first time in Chicago.This is the second time that the artwork will be on view to the public since its original exhibition at Alcatraz, the former federal penitentiary in San Francisco, in 2014. Trace was one of seven pieces that made up @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz, which drew nearly one million visitors. In 2017, Trace made its institutional debut at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and was acquired for their permanent collection. The site-specific installation of Ai Weiwei: Trace in Chicago is organized by the Hirshhorn and continues Alphawood Exhibitions’ history of socially engaged, and politically charged, shows following 2016’s Art AIDS America and 2017’s Then They Came For Me.Trace’s creation was influenced by Ai Weiwei’s own experience with imprisonment by the Chinese government. In 2011, he was incarcerated, interrogated, and beaten by the police in Beijing and was held for 81 days before he was released and officially charged. Weiwei was charged with tax evasion and had his passport confiscated. He was unable to travel abroad until 2015 and fabricated Trace remotely from his studio in Beijing in partnership with the FOR-SITE Foundation. Glance at it quickly and you might think it&rsquo;s a bike rack. But look closer and you&rsquo;ll see that the art installation at Daley Plaza includes a line of mock AR-15 military-style rifles.

Purposely set up in one of the busiest pedestrian spots in the Loop, the short-term exhibit &ldquo;Chicago Gun Share Program,&rdquo; resembles a&nbsp;Divvy&nbsp;bike-share docking station and invites visitors to consider how easy it is for people get their hands on weapons, said Norm Bilow, of the Chicago-based advertising agency Escape Pod. The agency, along with the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence, created the exhibit that went up last week and will remain in the Loop until Wednesday.

Santiago Calatrava&rsquo;s 2,000-foot-tall Chicago Spire never did get built, thanks to a recession that had nothing to do with his spectacular design. But, Calatrava will leave his mark on Chicago, nevertheless.

The Spanish architect, structural engineer, sculptor, painter and all-around Renaissance man has been chosen to create an outdoor sculpture that will be installed at developers&rsquo; expense in the park at River Point, the 52-story office tower at Lake and Canal that includes a 1.5-acre public park over rail lines.

Art Design Chicago: Highlighting Creativity

<h2>A 48,000% return on a painting may be Illinois&#39; best investment</h2>

(Bloomberg) &mdash; Art may not save the world, but it could help a municipal authority in Illinois.

The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority voted Tuesday to sell a painting by Chicago artist Kerry James Marshall, estimated at $8 million to $12 million, at a Sotheby&#39;s auction next month. The MPEA purchased the monumental canvas &ldquo;Past Times&rdquo; for $25,000 in 1997, a potential increase of as much as 48,000 percent.

Illinois can use all the help it can get. On Wednesday, the state sold $500 million of federally tax-exempt bonds. Moody&#39;s Investors Service and S&amp;P Global Ratings rank Illinois one level above junk, the worst rating of any state.

A museum in southern France has handed more than half the works in its collection over to police investigators after experts said they are fakes. But around 80 of the 140 works owned by the municipal museum are now believed to be falsely attributed to Terrus or outright forgeries...

The&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;City Council recently approved the&nbsp;landmark designation&nbsp;for the Old Chicago Main Post Office. Built in phases from 1921 to 1932, the 2.3-million-square-foot structure is located on the western bank of the south branch of the Chicago River in Chicago&rsquo;s Near West Side. The building&rsquo;s brawny nine-and twelve-story art deco design is the work of Chicago architectural firm Graham, Anderson, Probst &amp; White, a successor to D.H. Burnham and Company.

The Expo Chicago art fair is expanding its programming for 2018, with an off-site edition of its &ldquo;/Dialogues&rdquo; discussion program at the Venice Architecture Biennale in May and, at the hometown fair in September, more talks in addition to a first-time Professionals Forum to convene specialists in mind of &ldquo;managing, selling, and acquiring a contemporary collection,&rdquo; according to an announcement.

<h2>11 of the World&rsquo;s Greatest Sculpture Parks, from Seattle to Oslo</h2>

The tradition of mounting works of art outdoors in nature stretches back for centuries. In the late 1500s, for example, Henry VIII adorned his gardens at Nonsuch Palace in Surrey, England, with sculptures inspired by Greek mythology. In Renaissance Italy, nobles like the Medicis bedecked their gardens with&nbsp;Classical&nbsp;pieces excavated from ruins. And at the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV lavishly decorated the sprawling grounds of Versailles with over 200 sculptures made of marble, bronze, and lead. Later, when site-specific outdoor sculptures were first commissioned in the 1800s, the earliest iterations of what we now consider sculpture parks began to emerge. Today, these outdoor spaces around the world strike a delightful balance between nature and art, displaying a wide range of work, from massive contemporary sculptures to earthworks and subtler, historic pieces.

<h2>Overlooked No More: A Foundation&#39;s Push to Elevate Chicago Art</h2>

New York has long been considered the center of American visual art, home to the Met, the MoMA, and the incredible, cylindrical viewing galleries of the Guggenheim. Abstract Expressionism developed in the city, as did the careers of its luminaries such as Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Mark Rothko. A new crop of art-world superstars blossoms in the city each year.

More recently, Los Angeles has entered the collective art consciousness. In the past five years, major gifts in the hundreds of millions have remade L.A.&rsquo;s cultural landscape into a Monopoly board of arts institutions. The Broad and the Marciano Art Foundation opened, and new galleries and acquisitions are planned at the Hammer, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Art makers themselves, fleeing the high cost and low light of New York City, are basking in L.A.&rsquo;s spectacular, Mediterranean-like sun.

<h2>Chicago architects take the lead for U.S. pavilion at prestigious Venice Architecture Biennale</h2>

It&rsquo;s no insult to Chicago&rsquo;s fledgling architecture biennial to say that the event remains an upstart compared to the bigger, older and more prestigious Venice Architecture Biennale. So it&rsquo;s a big deal that Chicago&rsquo;s architecture community is poised to make a mark on the Italian city of lagoons, canals and exotic buildings washed by the Adriatic mist.

For the first time, a spokeswoman confirmed, Chicago institutions are organizing architecture biennale&rsquo;s U.S. pavilion, traditionally a showcase for top American talent. In addition, Chicagoans are designing two of the pavilion&rsquo;s seven installations, including one by the firm of architect&nbsp;Jeanne Gang&nbsp;that will transport hundreds of cobblestones from a Memphis riverfront to Venice.

Noah Adams, 19, has a Pablo Picasso etching in his dorm entitled, &ldquo;Dream and Lie of Franco 1.&rdquo; To be sure, these are not the originals &mdash; they&rsquo;re prints &mdash; but many of the several dozen pieces on loan this year to mostly undergraduates at the University of Chicago are each worth several thousand dollars.

<h2>In Marrakech, New Art Fair and Museum Make Case for an Intriguing Future</h2>

It may well be that settings for people-watching can get no better than an art fair in a grand Moroccan hotel. The milling in and out of La Mamounia Palace in Marrakech was a sight to see last weekend in the midst of the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair: locals and travelers alike taking up their stations amid bountiful orange trees and swaying palms, with a lot of dashing fashion on display. Sounds and scents stirred the senses more, from clacking traffic noise drifting over top the hotel&rsquo;s gated walls to a dizzying mix of floral aromas whirled together with notes of citrus and gasoline.

Deb Flagel started 2018 by asking a question: What kind of art is coming out of the Midwest?&nbsp;

As executive director of <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/woman-made-gallery--2">Woman Made Gallery</a>, 2150 S. Canalport Ave., Flagel curated an exhibition to help herself answer that question. From March 2&ndash;24, Woman Made will display its inaugural Midwest Open, featuring work from female artists from all 12 Midwestern states.&nbsp;

Flagel hopes the Midwest Open will explore several other questions as well, such as whether the immediacy of sharing art over the internet has made the concept of &ldquo;regional art&rdquo; disappear.&nbsp;

On March 1, as we hopefully start to&nbsp;see more signs of spring everywhere, including in the art world, the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College (MoCP) will host its popular annual benefit auction.

This year <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/darkroom-benefit-auction">DARKROOM</a>, co-chaired by Lisa Bailey, Dawoud Bey, and Jackie Moss, will take place on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Venue Six10 at 610 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

Photography enthusiasts will enjoy music, hors d&rsquo;oeuvres, drinks and good company while perusing auction items by celebrated contemporary artists, including work by Ai Weiwei, Dawoud Bey, and more. All proceeds raised at this event will support essential MoCP exhibition and education programs in 2018.&nbsp;

The centerpiece of the event is the&nbsp;auction. The list of artists who&nbsp;are part of the auction is noteworthy, and collectors and enthusiasts should be motivated to bid not only to support MoCP but to potentially take home a work of art by one of the following:&nbsp;Dawoud Bey,&nbsp;Paul D&#39;Amato,&nbsp;Laura Letinsky,&nbsp;Diana Matar,&nbsp;Paula McCartney,&nbsp;Sandro Miller,&nbsp;John Opera,&nbsp;Leonard Suryajaya,&nbsp;Jan Tichy and&nbsp;Jeff Wolin, among others. Viewers may preview and bid virtually on <a href="https://paddle8.com/auction/mocp/">Paddle8</a>.

Particularly noteworthy is a piece by Ai Weiwei&nbsp;(b. 1957, Beijing, China), a controversial social activist and artist who was&nbsp;secretly, and now famously,&nbsp;detained by the Chinese police in 2011 and interrogated for 81 days. Since then he has not been allowed to leave the courtyard of his home without permission from the police.&nbsp;Weiwei creates work that boldly confronts contemporary sociopolitical issues, both in China and abroad. In his series of snapshots titled Study of Perspective he flips his middle finger at monuments, landmarks, and institutions of cultural and political power. Traditionally, artists have done perspective studies as preparation for illusionistic drawings or paintings of three-dimensional space on a flat surface. Ai cannily uses the double entendre of &ldquo;perspective&rdquo; as he interjects his point-of-view into photographs of iconic landmarks in which his middle finger serves as both a universal symbol of protest and a device for evaluating the relationship of distant objects.&nbsp;His most recent addition to the series,&nbsp;Study of Perspective, Trump Tower, NYC, 2016 was shown for the first time in the exhibition #AiWeiwei at MoCP in 2017. This was also Ai&rsquo;s first solo presentation of work in Chicago. In addition to offering its stellar fine art photography auction, at DARKROOM&nbsp;MoCP will&nbsp;present the sixth annual Silver Camera Award to artist Deborah Willis. The Silver Camera Award honors those who have made significant contributions to the medium of photography. Deborah Willis is a celebrated photographer, historian, and curator of African American photography. She is the author of many notable books, including Out [o] Fashion Photography: Embracing Beauty and Posing Beauty: African American Images from the 1890s to the Present, which inspired a traveling exhibition. Her photographs and scholarship have centered on representations of blackness, womanhood, and beauty.&nbsp;

<h2>Investigation of documenta 14&rsquo;s Shaky Finances Widens to Include Possible Embezzlement of Public Funds</h2>

The German Attorney General G&ouml;tz Wied confirmed on Wednesday, February 14, that the criminal investigation into documenta&rsquo;s officials on the suspicion of embezzlement has expanded. The investigation comes in response to a report issued last November by an independent auditor that included substantial evidence that there were serious failures in how public funds were spent on the recent edition of the prestigious exhibition, which took place in Kassel in Germany as well as the Greek capital of Athens.&nbsp;

<h2>The Artist JR Will Plaster the Facade of This Year&rsquo;s Armory Show With the Faces of Immigrants</h2>

On the heels of JR&rsquo;s recent&nbsp;Oscar nomination&nbsp;for&nbsp;Faces Places, a documentary he co-directed with filmmaker Agnes Varda, the French street artist is already working on his next project: an ambitious public art installation for the Armory Show. For the work, titled&nbsp;SO CLOSE,&nbsp;JR is plastering the exterior of Pier 94 with photographs that meld archival images from Ellis Island with portraits of Syrian refugees.

The massive installation has been organized by art dealer Jeffrey Deitch and Artsy, and is a sequel of sorts to &ldquo;Unframed,&rdquo; the artist&rsquo;s&nbsp;2014 photo installation on Ellis Island. For that project, JR took over the former immigration facility&rsquo;s&nbsp;abandoned hospital complex, pasting enlarged&nbsp;photographs of patients onto the buildings&rsquo; crumbling walls and broken windows.

It was the loan denial heard around the world. When the White House requested to borrow a painting by&nbsp;Vincent van Gogh&nbsp;from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in September, the museum&rsquo;s chief curator Nancy Spector kindly declined, but countered with a hum-dinger of a replacement: a golden toilet by&nbsp;Maurizio Cattelan.

After the&nbsp;Washington Post&nbsp;reported the exchange late last month, many applauded her snarkiness, while others&mdash;including a Fox Business host who called for&nbsp;the curator&rsquo;s resignation&mdash;viewed it as highly inappropriate.

Party-line divisions aside, the cause c&eacute;l&egrave;bre sheds light on a history of lesser-known art loans to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And it illustrates how the Trump Administration appears to be doing things a bit differently than its predecessors.

<h2>The National Gallery of Art Cancels a Chuck Close Show After Misconduct Accusations</h2>

The National Gallery of Art in Washington has canceled a Chuck Close exhibition, planned for May, because of accusations of sexual misconduct that have engulfed the artist in controversy.

Anabeth Guthrie, a spokeswoman for the National Gallery said that museum officials made the decision to cancel the show this month because of &ldquo;allegations of misconduct&rdquo; made against Mr. Close. In December, The New York Times published a report that Mr. Close had asked women who visited his studio to undress and made unwelcome explicit comments.

&ldquo;We have never made a decision to cancel a show because of allegations of this kind before,&rdquo; Ms. Guthrie said.

For the last four decades, Chicago-based Terra Foundation has quietly gone about its business of supporting American art locally and globally. This year, it&#39;s making a bigger splash.

Terra is spending $6.5 million on Art Design Chicago, a yearlong celebration of American art and design taking place at 60 cultural organizations around the city. Art Design Chicago took five years to pull together and has a total cost of about $8 million. It has connected Terra with about 15 new organizations, among them the&nbsp;South Side Community Art Center,&nbsp;which received a $50,000 grant from Terra for &quot;Change the Canvas, Change the World: A Landscape of Cultural Discovery,&quot; opening at the Bronzeville center Nov. 3. Masequa Myers, executive director, calls the grant &quot;big money&quot; for the center and adds that the collaboration with Terra carries considerable marketing potential. &quot;It really raises the bar for us,&quot; she says.

<h2>A Chicagoan in Paris: Tony Fitzpatrick takes it all in while filming &#39;Patriot&#39;</h2>

Back in Chicago during a bone-chilling week or so during the holidays, he was eager to hear about local politics but mostly he talked about what it has been like working in Paris on the second season of the Amazon Video series&nbsp;&ldquo;Patriot,&rdquo;&nbsp;written and directed by Chicago&rsquo;s Steve Conrad. &ldquo;I think I&rsquo;m the only guy who goes to Paris and loses 14 pounds,&rdquo; he says.

In the show, Fitzpatrick plays a character named Jack Birdbath, a mysterious and disgraced security guard. If you watched any episodes of the series&rsquo; first season (available still on Amazon) you might have missed him. His was a small role but one that Fitzpatrick believes might have helped save his life.

Google confirmed to CNN Tech that the face-matching tool is not available in Illinois and Texas. The company declined to comment on why.

<h2>Obama Foundation takes the wraps off revised&mdash;and taller&mdash;design for Presidential Center</h2>

The Obama Foundation has released an updated plan for its Obama Presidential Center in Chicago&rsquo;s Jackson Park after listening to community concerns for the better part of eight months. The revisions&mdash;which include a taller, redesigned main tower&mdash;come just days after the center&rsquo;s controversial above-ground-parking structure on the neighboring Midway Plaisance was scrapped in favor of an entirely underground garage.

While members of the public were&nbsp;first shown&nbsp;early renderings in May and participated in numerous open and private meetings with the Obama Foundation since that time, Wednesday&rsquo;s announcement represents the first comprehensive redesign for the innovative combination museum and community center.

A Glencoe house that is one of a cluster of seven designed by Frank Lloyd Wright sold for less than its seller paid for it a dozen years earlier. Built in 1914 as part of the Ravine Bluffs subdivision, the house on Meadow Road sold for $752,000 on Jan. 5. The seller bought the house in 2005 for $790,000.

Listing agent Elise Rinaldi of @properties said the lower price was &quot;no different than any other house in my market, the North Shore.&quot; In recent months, Crain&#39;s has reported on several homes in Lake Forest, Kenilworth and other North Shore towns that have sold for below prices from 15 years ago and more.

<h2>The Authenticity of Modigliani Paintings Questioned Once Again</h2>

ROME &mdash; The tormented artist Amedeo Modigliani is beloved both by art aficionados and forgers. Now, an art expert has written a report, leaked by the Italian news media, for state prosecutors that says a third of the works in a popular Modigliani exhibition last year in Genoa, Italy, are fakes.

The expert, Isabella Quattrocchi, said that seven drawings and eight oil paintings by Modigliani, as well as six oil paintings attributed to his friend and sometime collaborator, Moise Kisling, were not authentic. The art works were lent by private collectors and museums in Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Argentina and the United States.

As we settle into a new year, we are looking&nbsp;forward to all that is quickly filling a busy and varied arts calendar. There are already many&nbsp;new events and exhibitions opening, and there are more&nbsp;celebrations to attend and&nbsp;galleries and museums to visit each week.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are especially grateful for the spotlight this year on artists connected to Chicago, as you will see in the list below, and we are eager to explore new areas of focus, such as design and&nbsp;new media. Other exhibitions of note celebrate the dynamism of the art world&nbsp;&ndash; the City&#39;s Year of Creative Youth aims to inspire and engage a whole new community and generation of artists. Art Design Chicago brings together 50 partner organizations to mount dozens of exhibitions and special programs.&nbsp;

We noted a few months ago that Chicago was having a major cultural moment, but now we see that the moment is not fleeting &ndash; it is continuing and building. CGN will cover each of these events more in depth as they open, but for now, we hope you are making your own art &#39;wish-lists&#39; like we are and that you look forward to a year filled with art and creativity. <h3>City of Chicago&#39;s&nbsp;Year of Creative Youth</h3>

Hot on the heels of the Year of Public Art, the focal point of the City of Chicago&rsquo;s Year of Creative Youth will be a Creative Youth Festival, held in Millennium Park on September 22 and showcasing teen artists in dance, theatre, music, spoken word, and the visual arts. The program offers teens performance opportunities at many Chicago festivals and partner events.&nbsp;

<h3>The Field Museum Turns 125</h3>

On October 26, 1893 Marshall Field donated $1 million for the establishment of a museum to house the Columbian Exposition. 125 years, and three name changes, later, the Field Museum of Natural History remains a premier natural history museum, attracting two million visitors a year. &nbsp;

The Field Museum is celebrating their 125th anniversary by revamping SUE the T. Rex and moving the cast up to the The Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet, the museum&rsquo;s most popular exhibit.&nbsp;

<h3>Gertrude Abercrombie: Portrait of the Artist as a Landscape at Elmhurst Art Museum</h3>

Gertrude Abercrombie: Portrait of the Artist as a Landscape at Elmhurst Art Museum is organized by Jenny Gibbs and coordinated at the museum by Lal Bahcecioglu. Abercrombie (1909-1977) was a painter based in Chicago who created surreal and dream-like imagery. She developed her own unique style and color palette, and explained the images of her work with &ldquo;It is always myself that I paint.&rdquo; The exhibition will include 40 of the artist&rsquo;s enigmatic paintings of spare interiors and illusionary landscapes&mdash;which have been referred to as &ldquo;psychic self-portraits.&rdquo;

Idiosyncratic, charming and irascible, Gertrude was presciently contemporary. Referred to as &ldquo;the queen of the bohemian artists,&rdquo; Abercrombie entertained many jazz musicians at her home at parties on Saturday evenings and jam sessions on Sunday afternoons, including friends Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins.

<h3>Nina Chanel Abney: Royal Flush at the&nbsp;Chicago Cultural Center &nbsp; &nbsp;</h3>

Nina Chanel Abney: Royal Flush is the first solo exhibition in a museum for the Chicago-born artist. The exhibition is a 10-year survey of approximately 30 of the artist&rsquo;s paintings, watercolors and collages. Abney, born in 1982, is at the forefront of a generation of artists that is unapologetically revitalizing narrative figurative painting, and as a skillful storyteller, she visually articulates the complex social dynamics of contemporary urban life. The exhibition is organized by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts to the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.

<h3>Richard Hull at Western Exhibitions</h3>

School of the Art Institute Chicago graduate Richard Hull will exhibit new work at Western Exhibitions this spring. Hull calls his recent paintings and drawings &ldquo;stolen portraits.&rdquo; His crayon drawings, which respond to the paintings, in particular, are portraits in the form of hairdos, each one expressing a distinct visual personality rather than a representation of a particular individual. This quasi-figurative direction started with, of all things, drawing a horse&rsquo;s tail for an exquisite corpse in a performative collaboration with MacArthur award-winning saxophonist and composer Ken Vandermark and the illustrator and printmaker Dan Grzeca. In Hull&rsquo;s portraits, horsetails now resemble looping flower petal forms &ndash; building blocks for portrait-like structures. The bulbous loops are accentuated by minute, repetitive, often concentric curves within the large masses.

Yes, this exhibition will make everyone over 30 feel really old. Future generations will not know life in&nbsp;a pre-digital world. This summer, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presents the landmark exhibition I Was Raised on the Internet, an immersive and participatory show examining the impact of the internet and how it has changed the way we experience the world. With nearly 100 interactive artworks from 1998 to the present,&nbsp;I Was Raised on the Internet&nbsp;spans photography, painting, sculpture, film and video, as well as emerging technologies, interactive computer works, and virtual reality.&nbsp;I Was Raised on the Internet presents a global range of artists working in new media such as Oculus Rift and platforms like Facebook and Snapchat, looking at culture and &#39;trending&#39; content and how interacting with the world has shifted through constant exchange on the internet. Taking 1998 as a starting point, the exhibition decodes a generation of artists and viewers who have come to speak a unique vocabulary that has emerged with the new millennium. In addition to the idea of a millennial, the exhibition explores terms such as &#39;post-internet&#39; and &#39;post-digital,&#39; used by artists to imply a new, instant culture. Throughout the exhibition, the viewer becomes an active agent, engaging in new forms of technology and participating with the works both in the galleries and the digital works hosted online.

We always look forward to EXPO CHICAGO in September, but a highlight that is already on our radar is&nbsp;Creative Chicago: An Interview Marathon&nbsp;featuring one of the world&#39;s leading curators, critics, and art historians Hans Ulrich Obrist.&nbsp;Alongside partners the Chicago Humanities Festival,&nbsp;Navy Pier, and the Terra Foundation for American Art, EXPO will&nbsp;present&nbsp;a four-hour interview marathon&nbsp;in&nbsp;the Aon Grand Ballroom on Saturday, September 29, as part of the Terra Foundation for American Art&#39;s Art Design Chicago initiative.

Obrist&rsquo;s marathons are part of his life-long&nbsp;Interview Project, for which he has logged thousands of hours in discussion with some of the leading thinkers of our time. These conversations examine notions of art and creativity, painting a verbal portrait of our ever-changing cultural moment. Artistic Director of the Serpentine Gallery in London, Obrist hosted his first interview marathon&mdash;a 24-hour conversational exploration of art, ideas and creativity in 2005. The marathon format has become a central part of his practice ever since.

The&nbsp;Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago&nbsp;is a very different-looking institution as 2018 begins than it was in 2017. There&rsquo;s a top-notch new first-floor restaurant, Marisol, plus cafe and plaza space that replace what was a drab hallway. And the exterior of the building, criticized as austere, has been softened and highlighted for nearby Michigan Avenue by bold yellow lighted &ldquo;MCA&rdquo; signs.

Those are just some of the changes spearheaded by Pritzker Director&nbsp;Madeleine Grynsztejn, whose decade at the MCA has helped make it more inviting to the public while at the same time establishing a laser focus on spotlighting the work of emerging artists in Chicago and worldwide.

On the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Sweetzer Avenue in front of&nbsp;The Standard in Hollywood&nbsp;beginning on Feb. 27, a monumental white neon outline of a uterus &mdash; with fiberglass boxing gloves in place of the ovaries &mdash; will slowly rotate at a height of 43 feet. Well-positioned to be adopted as the logo of the&nbsp;#MeToo movement, this declarative image of female empowerment is the first public art project by&nbsp;Zoe Buckman, a 32-year-old British artist based in New York. Titled &ldquo;Champ,&rdquo; the kinetic sculpture was commissioned by the&nbsp;Art Production Fund&nbsp;and will remain on view for a year.&nbsp;

<h2>The Clock Is Ticking:&nbsp;Reward for Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist on Dec 31: $10 million. On January 1: $5 million</h2>

As midnight approaches on New Year&rsquo;s Eve, when much of the country will be glued to the broadcasts from Times Square, Anthony Amore will be waiting for his phone to ring.

He is no lovelorn teen: Mr. Amore, director of security at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, is a detective of sorts on the trail of the world&rsquo;s largest unsolved art heist, in which thieves purloined 13 items, valued at half a billion dollars, from the museum in 1990. They stole works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Degas and others.

The museum is offering a head-spinning reward of $10 million for information leading to their recovery, an amount it says is the largest private reward ever offered for stolen property. The offer expires on Jan. 1, when it reverts to $5 million.

<h2>Architecture Sleuths Solve Mystery of World&#39;s Fair House in Wilmette</h2>

A Chicago architect has solved the mystery surrounding a Wilmette house&#39;s possible origin as a demonstration home built for the Century of Progress World&#39;s Fair in 1933.&nbsp;

Crain&#39;s reported this month&nbsp;that a family of homebuilders unwittingly purchased a lost landmark when it was marketed as vacant land. The Kruszewskis, a father and son who run MJK Homes, paid $915,000 for two-fifths of an acre on Chestnut Avenue, only later finding out from village officials that the squarish house might have been a model home from the fair and was moved up afterward from the Northerly Island fairgrounds.

<h2>Best architecture of 2017: Apple Store, Unity Temple and the Biennial in a remarkable year</h2>

With a new architecture biennial, a big Frank Lloyd Wright anniversary and a series of small gems, it was a very good year for Chicago architecture. Here are the highlights:

A Chicago double for L.A. architects:&nbsp;The&nbsp;second version&nbsp;of the Chicago Architecture Biennial built on the legacy of the first biennial with a show, titled &ldquo;Make New History,&rdquo; that explored how a new generation of architects is looking backward to move forward.&nbsp;

The curators of the exhibition, Los Angeles architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, shaped an elegant, albeit esoteric, framework that showcased work by more than 140 designers from over 20 countries. And they demonstrated how their &ldquo;Make New History&rdquo; approach can work in a modestly scaled but exemplary renovation of the common spaces inside the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

<h2>With $750,000 Grant, Minneapolis Institute of Art Starts Up Center for Empathy and the Visual Arts</h2>

The Minneapolis Institute of Art has received a $750,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and will use the money toward starting what it is calling the Center for Empathy and the Visual Arts, or CEVA for short. Other so-called centers for empathy have been established by activist organizations and international affairs groups&mdash;among them People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Stanford University&rsquo;s medical school, and the Center for Empathy in International Affairs, which has has worked with U.S. peace groups&mdash;yet no major art museum has created one before, making CEVA the first of its kind.

The launch of CEVA will include an initiative lasting nearly five years to convene philosophers, writers, artists, thought leaders, and others to research ways that the arts can make people more compassionate. This past October, the Minneapolis Institute began the initiative with a conference at the University of California, Berkeley. A second phase of research, in which the museum&rsquo;s curators will investigate how better to connect with visitors, will follow.

<h2>Why the Getty Center&rsquo;s Art Stayed Put as Fires Raged Nearby</h2>

Visitors come to the Getty Center in Los Angeles to see Vincent van Gogh&rsquo;s irises and other great works. What they don&rsquo;t see is the reason that these masterpieces could stay put while thousands in Southern California had to evacuate as multiple fires raged in recent days, one of which came within thousands of feet of the museum.

The Getty&rsquo;s architect, Richard Meier, built fire resistance into the billion-dollar complex, said Ron Hartwig, vice president of communications for the J. Paul Getty Trust. These hills are fire prone, but because of features like the 1.2 million square feet of thick travertine stone covering the outside walls, the crushed rock on the roofs and even the plants chosen for the brush-cleared grounds, &ldquo;The safest place for the artwork to be is right here in the Getty Center,&rdquo; he said.

<h2>Supreme Court hears arguments in claim against Iranian antiquities</h2>

Can a collection of Persian antiquities held at a Chicago museum be used to pay damages to the American victims of a terrorist bombing in Jerusalem? That was the question argued at the US Supreme Court on 4 December, in a claim brought by Jenny Rubin and others against Iran. But the justices who questioned the lawyers involved in the case seemed skeptical about allowing the artefacts to be seized.

Rubin and the other plaintiffs, who were the victims of a 1997 suicide bombing in a pedestrian mall, won a $71m judgment in US court against Iran in 2003. To get paid,&nbsp;they are claiming the 30,000 ancient Persian clay tablets&nbsp;and artifacts in the Persepolis Collection at the University of Chicago&#39;s Oriental Institute, which have been on loan from Iran since 1937.

<h2>National Museum of Gospel Music planned for Bronzeville site</h2>

If planners get their way, Chicago will have the nation&rsquo;s first major gospel music museum, on the site once occupied by Pilgrim Baptist Church, known as the birthplace of gospel.

The National Museum of Gospel Music will unveil its plans for the $37.2 million Bronzeville institution, targeting a 2020 opening, at a news conference Friday afternoon on the nearby campus of Illinois Institute of Technology.

<h2>Bob Meyer infuses color into his long history of theatrical&nbsp;artwork</h2>

Something unusually magical happens to the work of visual artists who also are preoccupied with the theater. Think of Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney&nbsp;and William Kentridge, to name a few, and don&rsquo;t forget Leonardo da Vinci.

Bob Meyer, the Chicago-bred artist, actor, director and writer who now lives in a village outside Paris near Monet&rsquo;s Giverney gardens (and has installed his studio in an actual cave across the street from his home), is another ideal example of this cross-pollination of image with story, character and dialogue. His haunting pencil drawings and prints became a prized feature of the Chicago theater scene in the 1980s and &rsquo;90s, when he founded the Gare St. Lazare Players, a company that has since established itself in France and been seen throughout Europe, and under whose banner Meyer has been responsible for 60 productions of self-penned work, as well as plays by Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Sam Shepard, Wallace Shawn, Dario Fo and many others.

What would the world look like if more women were in charge?

An Artsy analysis comparing the artist rosters of the 199 female-run and male-run galleries showing at the 16th edition of&nbsp;Art Basel in Miami Beachprovides one clue. Dealers who are women are 28% more likely to show artists who are women. The gender breakdown of artists listed on the websites of the 126 male-run galleries showing at Art Basel in Miami Beach is 75% male artists to 25% female artists, a ratio of three to one.

<h2>It&#39;s past time to save the Uptown Theatre</h2>

Even before it went dark nearly four decades ago, the Uptown Theatre was in decline&mdash;the North Side&#39;s own architectural Miss Havisham, outfitted in its decaying Jazz Age finery. Once a dazzling movie theater that represented the outer limits of extravagant Roaring &#39;20s design, the 4,500-seat colossus by the 1970s had faded, playing host to Grateful Dead concerts and closed-circuit boxing matches. Then, in 1981, the doors shut&mdash;and since then, a generation of community activists has worked against the odds to see that those doors don&#39;t remain shut for good.

As Crain&#39;s contributor Mark Guarino&nbsp;reports in this week&#39;s issue,&nbsp;time is not on the preservationists&#39; side. &quot;If this isn&#39;t resolved soon, this building will continue to deteriorate,&quot; says Ward Miller, executive director of Preservation Chicago.
