Merritt brings more than 25 years of experience in city government and has served as Deputy Mayor of Business, Economic, and Neighborhood Development since 2023. “From the start of my administration, Deputy Mayor Kenya Merritt has delivered steady leadership and real results for the people of Chicago,” Johnson said. “Her experience supporting small businesses and neighborhood development, paired with her commitment to arts and culture, make her well positioned to lead DCASE.” “I’m honored and excited to step into this role,” Merritt said. “The arts are essential to the vibrancy of our neighborhoods and our city, and I’m committed to investing in Chicago’s creative ecosystem and supporting artists and cultural organizations.” Merritt steps into the role following the departure of former commissioner Clinée Hedspeth, whose tenure ended amid criticism from staff and members of the arts community regarding workplace culture and leadership at the department. Since becoming acting commissioner, the announcement says, Merritt has emphasized arts and culture as a driver of Chicago’s economy, with a focus on supporting artists and organizations, activating public spaces, and expanding the city’s cultural reach. As Deputy Mayor, she has led key elements of Johnson’s economic agenda, including the “Cut the Tape” initiative to streamline development processes and the implementation of the city’s $1.25 billion Housing and Economic Development Bond. Previously, Merritt served as First Deputy Commissioner and Chief Small Business Officer at the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, and held financial leadership roles across city government, including Chief Financial Officer at DCASE and the Department of Family and Support Services. Merritt holds a master’s degree in public service management from DePaul University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There is no mention of Merritt having previously worked for or led any arts-focused organizations. Grynsztejn joined the MCA in 2008 and has since led a period of major growth and visibility for the institution. During her tenure, the museum tripled its endowment, nearly doubled its operating budget, and broadened its audiences and partnerships—while placing a strong emphasis on accessibility and artist-centered programming. The MCA Board of Trustees will begin an international search for its next director in spring 2026. Grynsztejn will remain in her role until a successor is appointed. “Madeleine is one of the defining museum leaders of her generation,” said Board Chair Bill Silverstein. “Her leadership elevated the MCA to new heights while keeping it deeply connected to Chicago. From the museum’s renovation to initiatives like the Bilingual Initiative and Women Artists Initiative, her impact has been lasting and far-reaching.” In a statement, Grynsztejn reflected on her time at the museum: “It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as the MCA’s Pritzker Director. I’m deeply grateful to the artists, audiences, and colleagues who made this work possible.” She noted that, as the MCA approaches its 60th anniversary in 2027, the transition comes at a natural moment for new leadership to shape the institution’s next chapter. Under Grynsztejn, the MCA organized major exhibitions and retrospectives with artists including Kerry James Marshall, Takashi Murakami, Doris Salcedo, Nick Cave, and Virgil Abloh, alongside widely attended shows featuring David Bowie, Ólafur Eliasson, Yoko Ono, and Luc Tuymans. The museum also launched its Ascendant Artist series, offering early museum presentations to artists such as Rashid Johnson, Christina Quarles, and Wafaa Bilal. She also oversaw significant growth of the MCA’s collection through major gifts, including the D.Daskalopoulos Collection (shared with the Guggenheim), the Arthur Jafa film archive, and contributions from collectors Marilyn and Larry Fields and Helen Zell. Several key initiatives took shape during her tenure, including the Women Artists Initiative—dramatically increasing representation of female-identified artists—and the Bilingual Initiative, aimed at making the museum more accessible to Chicago’s Spanish-speaking communities. In 2017, Grynsztejn led an $82 million campaign tied to the MCA’s 50th anniversary, which funded the redesign of public spaces, including the Commons. More recently, she secured a $10 million Performance Fund to support live arts programming and continues to guide the museum’s Next Strategic Plan. Beyond the MCA, Grynsztejn serves as President of Museums in the Park and is a past president of the Association of Art Museum Directors. She was named a Knight of the French Legion of Honour in 2015. Intuit Art Museum to Honor Nick Cave, Bob Faust, Jerry Stefl at 35th Anniversary Gala in April

By CGN StaffARTnews shared the news on March 10 that a new satellite fair is planned to take place during the same weekend as EXPO CHICAGO next month. Called Neighbors, the fair will host a group of exhibiting galleries in a collector's 1,200 square foot apartment at Astor Court, 1355 North Astor Street. The house was designed for the Goodman Family (of lumber fortune and of the Goodman Theater) in 1914 by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. It was long a single-residence but was eventually sold and turned into smaller residences. It's well-known for its private outdoor courtyard.Having an art fair in a home means that the smaller-scale, domestic-vibe is key to the new fair. CGN doesn't have many details yet, and we couldn't reach anyone for comment, but ARTnews states that the fair was borne from a serendipitous encounter between Mirka Serrato, a collector, and a groundsman at the apartment building when a unit happened to be available. After living in the apartment but ultimately leaving for Dallas, Serrato wanted to find a new purpose for her former home and set out to find the right person to help her start a new fair and to show art. Jonny Tanna, who founded a gallery in London, is working with Serrato now on Neighbors and the two promise to make it a high-end fair experience with rigorous exhibition standards. Neighbors, a New Art Fair in a Gold Coast Apartment, Coming April 2026

It will be used for a “space that continues to enrich the student experience.” “In the coming weeks, we will convene a discussion with our university community to explore how the museum building and its collections can continue to serve as assets to DePaul, elevating our academic prominence and supporting the recruitment, training and development of current and future students,” Manuel said.&nbsp;&nbsp; Regarding DPAM's important permanent collection of art, the administration plans to work with museum staff to determine where the&nbsp;4,000 existing artworks will go. The DPAM website describes the&nbsp;collection&nbsp;as diverse in culture and geographic region, with more than 4​,000 objects, strong holdings by Chicago and regional artists, strengths in North American and Latin American photography, WPA-era prints, contemporary and traditional West African objects, and Eastern European graphic arts.&nbsp; The museum,&nbsp;at 935 W. Fullerton Ave. in Lincoln Park on the DePaul University Campus, has been free for all. Its location underneath the Fullerton CTA El Station made it truly one of the most accessible museums in Chicago. The&nbsp;61st&nbsp;International Art Exhibition&nbsp;of&nbsp;La&nbsp;Biennale di Venezia,&nbsp;In Minor Keys&nbsp;by Koyo Kouoh&nbsp;will be produced by&nbsp;La Biennale di Venezia, with the contribution of the professionals selected and directly involved by the curator&nbsp;Koyo Kouoh, who suddenly passed away on 10 May 2025. The team consists of the advisors Gabe Beckhurst Feijoo, Marie Helene Pereira and Rasha Salti; the editor-in-chief Siddhartha Mitter; and the assistant Rory Tsapayi. Chicago remains a formative touchstone in her trajectory as her practice gains increasing international visibility. Ebony G. PattersonBorn in 1981 in Kingston, Jamaica, Ebony G. Patterson splits her between Kingston and Chicago. She is represented in Chicago by monique meloche. Patterson’s richly layered installations and multimedia works examine visibility, beauty, mourning, and social power. Her deep ties to Chicago further connect the city to the Biennale’s global platform. Carrie SchneiderBorn in 1979 in Chicago, Carrie Schneider lives in New York City. Working primarily in photography and video, Schneider’s work often engages portraiture, identity, and personal narrative. She earned her MFA from SAIC in 2007 and is also represented in Chicago by monique meloche. Administered by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and hosted and funded by Kohler Co., the residency invites artists to create work within the company’s Pottery and Foundry facilities in Kohler, Wisconsin—working alongside the skilled craftspeople who power the factory floor. Each year, twelve artists participate in three-month residencies, with four artists in residence at a time. In every cohort, two artists work in the Pottery and two in the Foundry, developing projects in ceramic, cast iron, and brass. Residents receive 24/7 access to studio space inside the factory, along with industrial materials, specialized equipment, technical support, housing, transportation, and a weekly honorarium. Immersed in this uniquely industrial setting, artists are exposed to a depth of technical knowledge and material possibility rarely available in traditional studios. The drawing, part of The Block’s permanent collection, is on view through June 14. Wall Drawing #215 is what LeWitt described as a “location drawing”—a work designed to be executed directly on the wall and adapted to the specific dimensions of each site. Rather than existing as a fixed object, the drawing is realized anew for every installation using the artist’s original written instructions. The work currently on view was plotted, drafted, and executed by trained installers, following the precise parameters laid out by LeWitt more than 50 years ago. Although LeWitt died in 2007, his wall drawings continue to be made today through this instruction-based system, a practice that has become central to his legacy. For LeWitt, the concept behind the work was as important as its physical manifestation—an approach that challenged traditional ideas of authorship, originality, and permanence in art. Each installation is both a faithful realization of the artist’s intent and a unique response to the space in which it appears. The Block’s installation offers visitors insight into the careful process and collaborative labor behind the work. A newly released behind-the-scenes video documents the installation of Wall Drawing #215, featuring lead installer and draftsperson Lacey Fekishazy, who reflects on learning the practice from first-generation drafters who worked closely with LeWitt. Her commentary underscores the continuity of knowledge and care required to carry out the artist’s instructions decades later. Under the leadership of newly appointed Director Kate Sierzputowski and Curator Essence Harden, the fair enters a new chapter with what leadership says is a more focused, intentionally scaled format. The 2026 edition will present more than 130 galleries from around the world in a refined floorplan designed to prioritize clarity, discovery, and sustained engagement. The updated approach emphasizes curatorial coherence and accessibility while reinforcing EXPO CHICAGO’s role as a central convening point for the Midwest and international art communities. Sections of the fair also have new names - in addition to the 'galleries' list, there is also Focus, Profile, Embodiment, and Evolution. Curatorial programming plays an expanded role in the fair’s reimagined structure. A new partnership with the forthcoming Obama Presidential Center introduces two initiatives curated by Dr. Louise Bernard, Director of the Obama Presidential Center Museum. EXPO CHICAGO Announces First Details of 2026 Edition

No advance notice is given to the public when a financial institution is closed. All deposit accounts, excluding certain brokered deposits, have been transferred to First Independence Bank, Detroit, MI." The bank was found to be in an untenable financial position. Locally MetCap, which was housed in the historic Tree Studios, which were once artist studios, built a reputation among the art community as a champion of local artists. An exhibition program was titled Art Works Chicago, and dozens of local artists–from William Conger to Michiko Itatani–were exhibited in the bank's space over the years in collaboration with area galleries and art advisors. In 2025 the bank celebrated 20 years of its exhibition program with an exhibition that looked back on the artists it showcased. MetCap's website described the purpose of the program, "Several shows each year feature artists in the Chicago nexus, enriching an already unique space with fine artwork. This initiative creates a platform for team members&nbsp;and visitors to meet artists, better understand the art making process, and engage in thoughtful dialogue. The art and unique space gives the bank a very non-traditional feel. This non-traditional approach is at the core of what we do – developing creative solutions to complex financial situations for our clients and partners." The new installation will draw from photographic material housed in the Johnson Publishing Company image archive and the personal collection of photographer Howard Simmons. Continuing Gates’s longstanding artistic practice, the work elevates and preserves Black cultural legacies through the care of archives and everyday materials, bringing renewed attention to the stories, creativity, and collective memory that have shaped American life. “I’ve known Theaster since his days as the first transit arts planner for the Chicago Transit Authority 25 years ago, and he is the ideal artist for this marquee space,” said Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation. “His boundless creativity, commitment to public art, passion for educating and sharing art with others, and gift for translating history into the present make him a singular talent. These publications helped define the visual and cultural language of the 20th century. Rendered on industrial aluminum and extending more than 175 feet, the installation foregrounds images of crowds and Black women, honoring the collective labor, energy, care, and collaboration that continue to propel movements forward. In 2016, Gates began archiving and working with approximately 20,000 photographs from the Johnson Publishing Company Archives, ensuring that this vital visual record of Black cultural heritage could continue to generate new value and remain a source of creative and entrepreneurial inspiration for Chicago’s South Side. Lewis (yearlong resident) is a multimedia artist working in collage, assemblage, and installation. Yoonshin Park (January 15-May 25) is a Chicago-based artist, educator, and curator whose work reflects on the transience and hybridity of identity through everyday gestures and the experience of in-betweenness across language and place. Since joining in 2020, she has developed the fair’s curatorial and public programming in which she has brought major curators and institutional leaders to the fair, offering meaningful moments for engagement. In addition, she has led in developing the fair’s EXPOSURE section and managed key gallery relationships that have helpedstrengthen the fair. A long-time contributor to Chicago’s arts landscape, she was previously co-director of artist-run space Julius Caesar and was also the Senior Editor at Colossal. She has collaborated on projects with the Tremaine Foundation, Terra Foundation, Hyde Park Art Center, as well as local and national galleries. Kate graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and is frequently featured as a guest lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “It’s an honor to build on EXPO CHICAGO’s deep connection to the city that inspires it,” said Sierzputowski. “Chicago thrives on experimentation and generosity – I’m excited to expand how the fair reflects that creative energy and risk taking, while continuing to position it as a site for bold dialogue and exchange.” Frieze acquired <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.expochicago.com/" target="_blank">EXPO CHICAGO</a> in 2023, expanding its global network of art fairs to include Chicago alongside London, New York, Los Angeles, and Seoul.
