Anthropologist Diego Prieto Hernández, Director General of the&nbsp;National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), a branch of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, accepted the artifact. Dr. Antonio Saborit, Director of the&nbsp;National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, was also present. The limestone frieze, measuring 47”x 21”x 4” and dating from between 500 - 900 CE, is from the Classic Period of Maya civilization in Mexico and depicts a figure wearing an elaborate mask and headdress with hands extended as if speaking. Originally, there were two figures facing one another. The artifact, which was held in a private collection, was displayed at the Brooklyn Museum in the 1960s and 1970s and then at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1980s. Jeanne and Joseph Sullivan acquired the piece in 1988, and in 2024, their family sought the National Museum of Mexican Art’s assistance in returning the sculpture to Mexico. This past February the NMMA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with INAH to continue collaborating on projects and exhibitions that promote Mexico’s cultural patrimony. The NMMA Visual Arts Department worked with INAH to coordinate an orderly transfer of the Maya frieze.&nbsp;INAH has full normative and guiding power in the protection and conservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.&nbsp;This Mexican institution, founded in 1939, researches, preserves and disseminates the nation's archaeological, anthropological, historical, and paleontological heritage in order to strengthen the identity and memory of the society that holds it.&nbsp; Prieto emphasized that “through this act we wish to attest the significance for the Mexican Government to recover our archaeological and historical heritage, and in general the cultural patrimony of Mexicans that is improperly residing in other countries.” “Our mission compels us to advocate for practices that promote equity and acknowledge the significance of cultural heritage for communities worldwide,” said Cesáreo Moreno, Visual Arts Director for the NMMA. “By acknowledging the importance of cultural heritage to its originating communities, we promote a richer and more nuanced understanding of humanity.”&nbsp;“We are honored to collaborate on this repatriation mission with our colleagues at the National Institute of Anthropology and History and the National Museum of Anthropology. National Museum of Mexican Art Facilitates Repatriation of Mayan Frieze to Mexico

MCA Chicago and Sotheby’s Honor Ed Ruscha at June 6 Benefit Auction

Courtesy Frieze By CGN Staff Today, four days after Frieze-owned <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.expochicago.com/" target="_blank">EXPO CHICAGO</a> wrapped up its latest fair, news broke that Ari Emanuel–the 64 year-old brother of Chicago's former Mayor Rahm Emanuel–is setting up a new, unnamed company to purchase Frieze. Endeavor, the company that has owned Frieze, said Thursday said that it had agreed to sell Frieze to a new events and experiences company founded by Emanuel and backed by a group of investors. Ari Emanuel shared in a statement, “Frieze has always been a source of inspiration for me — both professionally and personally,” Emanuel, who currently holds the title of executive chairman at WME Group, said in a statement. “Having worked with the team for nearly a decade, I’ve seen firsthand the strength of their community and the ambition driving their mission to expand the reach and understanding of contemporary art.” EXPO CHICAGO just ended its four day run this past Sunday, and Frieze's flagship event, Frieze New York, returns to The Shed next week on May 7. A spokesperson said that changes to the company’s structure will not impact Frieze's leadership team and Simon Fox will remain chief executive. The deal also includes Frieze’s magazine and its seven international fairs, including EXPO Chicago, the Armory Show in New York, Frieze Los Angeles and Frieze Seoul. As noted in the New York Times, "Given the downturn in the art market,&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(50, 104, 145);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/arts/design/art-basel-ubs-art-market-report.html" target="_blank">which has experienced a 12 percent year-on-year decline</a>&nbsp;in global sales,&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(50, 104, 145);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2025/01/07/the-road-to-the-sale-of-frieze-is-a-winding-one" target="_blank">some industry experts had worried</a>&nbsp;that Frieze’s sale to an outside buyer could have disastrous implications for the business. Some gallerists are now breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that Emanuel has a long history with Frieze; his company first purchased a stake in Frieze nine years ago before gaining full ownership in 2023."

Brushwood Center Announces Largest Gift in Center's History To Support Creative Programs

Drawing on inspiration from President Obama’s autobiography “Dreams from My Father,” Finch will showcase a tile wall mural installation entitled “To Disappear Enhances – (Memory Landscapes)” that evokes memories of places from the President’s formative years, including Honolulu, Jakarta, Chicago, and Nairobi. The colors for each location were selected personally by President Obama from a large palette to represent a specific personal memory from that place. Chicago’s Legendary Old Town Art Fair Unveils First-Ever Commissioned Poster for Its 75th Anniversary

Part of the letter to the Mayor states, "It is with this understanding that we write to share our deep concern about the dysfunction in the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE). Our sector depends on DCASE to be a partner in local government that is available and responsive to the community's needs and a strong advocate for the economic and civic power of the arts. Last month marked the first anniversary of Clinée Hedspeth's <a style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(70, 120, 134);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.wbez.org/culture-the-arts/2024/03/18/chicago-names-clinee-hedspeth-cultural-commissioner" target="_blank">appointment</a> as the City of Chicago’s Commissioner of DCASE. Over the last year, through revelations in the media, reports from DCASE staff, and statements from the community, it has become evident that the urgent needs of the arts and cultural sector are not currently being met." The new cultural space marks the culmination of a journey to complete an expansive adaptive reuse project of the last remaining building of the Jane Addams Homes in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood at 919 S. Ada Street. Founded by public housing residents, the Museum is a place to experience stories of hope and personal achievement amid struggle, resistance, and resilience. The Museum aims to preserve an important building as well as the many experiences and stories that happened within its walls –&nbsp;and the walls of other public housing structures. It also seeks to cultivate stories that are yet to come, both for individuals who may have spent time in public housing as well as those whose lives have been quite removed from public housing. “This museum was built by hundreds of dedicated people who have made it a reality,” said Sunny Fischer, Co-Founder and Board Chair for the National Public Housing Museum. “They shared their stories, and they patiently provided their labor and love and support over the last 18years. Chicago's New National Public Housing Museum: An 18 Year Dream Realized

Via PR CHICAGO—The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago is thrilled to announce&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://visit.mcachicago.org/exhibitions/yoko-ono-music-of-the-mind/" target="_blank">Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind</a>, opening October 2025. The MCA is the exclusive US venue for this comprehensive solo exhibition dedicated to artist, musician, and activist Yoko Ono (b. 1933, Tokyo, Japan; lives in New York, NY). Traveling from Tate Modern in London, where it enjoyed record attendance, and in close collaboration with Ono’s studio, this groundbreaking retrospective covers 70 years of Ono’s trailblazing career, with over 200 works including participatory instruction pieces and scores, installations, a curated music room, films, music and photography, and archival materials. The exhibition reveals Ono’s innovative approach to language, art and participation that continues to speak to the present moment. Participation is an important feature of Yoko Ono’s vision as an artist, which is why visitors will be able to partake in several interactive, instruction-based artworks throughout&nbsp;Music of the Mind. This exhibition underscores Ono’s legacy of radical performance and her significant and influential contributions to visual art, including Fluxus and Conceptualism; music; film, and activism. The exhibition features several participatory artworks, such as&nbsp;Painting to Hammer a Nail&nbsp;(1961/1966),&nbsp;Bag Piece&nbsp;(1964), and&nbsp;White Chess Set&nbsp;(1966), among others. Later works like&nbsp;Add Color (Refugee Boat)&nbsp;(1960/2016) encourage guests to write their hopes and beliefs on a white boat and its surroundings, while the installation&nbsp;My Mommy Is Beautiful&nbsp;(2004) gives the public an opportunity to share thoughts about their relationship to their mothers and motherhood and attach photographs of their mother. Additionally, there will be public activations of Ono’s peace-driven artworks on billboards throughout the city of Chicago and on the MCA’s premises. “Yoko Ono is a wildly influential and significant figure in performance, conceptualism, music, and activism. Photo: Thomas Griesel.&nbsp; ABOUT THE ARTIST Yoko Ono is an artist, musician, and activist.&nbsp; Born in Tokyo, 1933, Ono grew up in Japan, with periods spent abroad in San Francisco and New York. She was the first woman admitted to the philosophy program at Gakushuin University in Tokyo, where she studied before moving to New York in 1953 to attend Sarah Lawrence College.&nbsp; In 1956, she settled in Manhattan with her then husband, composer Toshi Ichiyanagi. Immersed in a community of artists and composers, Ono began to develop her own art practice, often in the form of instructions that invited the viewer’s participation. In 1960, she rented a loft on Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan and began organizing performances and events in the space with La Monte Young, becoming a vital part of the New York art and music scene.&nbsp; In 1961, Ono’s first solo exhibition was held at George Maciunas’ AG Gallery in New York.&nbsp;Painting to Be Stepped On, a work of canvas placed on the floor with a card inviting the viewer to step on it, was one of several&nbsp;Instruction Paintings&nbsp;exhibited. Later that year, she gave a performance at Carnegie Recital Hall that included works involving movement, sound, and voice, such as,&nbsp;AOS – To David Tudor, and&nbsp;A Grapefruit in the World of Park.&nbsp; In March 1962, Ono returned to Tokyo, where she debuted new performances at the Sogetsu Art Center, including&nbsp;The Pulse, and exhibited her&nbsp;Instructions for Paintings, a progression from works shown at AG Gallery. These works, comprised only of written instructions, marked a key moment in the history of conceptual art. Later that year, she performed with John Cage and David Tudor on a concert tour throughout Japan. In 1964, Ono performed&nbsp;Cut Piece&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bag Piece&nbsp;in Kyoto and Tokyo, and self-published&nbsp;Grapefruit, her foundational book of instructions.&nbsp; In the fall of 1964, Ono returned to New York, continuing to perform and stage events, and pioneering new ways of disseminating her art through advertising and postcard events. She also began making her own films, including&nbsp;Film No. 4,&nbsp;Matchand&nbsp;Eyeblink.&nbsp; In September 1966, Ono was invited to London to perform and lecture in the&nbsp;Destruction in Art Symposium. Remaining in London, she had a solo exhibition at Indica Gallery and Lisson Gallery the following year, showing new conceptual object-based works such as&nbsp;White Chess Set,&nbsp;Apple, and&nbsp;Half-A-Room. During this period, she continued to make films, including a new version of&nbsp;Film No. 4 (Bottoms), and presented a series of performances on her concert tour&nbsp;Music of the Mind.&nbsp; At her Indica Gallery exhibition, Ono met John Lennon, beginning a personal and artistic relationship in art, music, and activism. By 1969 their conceptual events to promote peace had become world-wide news, including the&nbsp;WAR IS OVER!&nbsp;If you want it&nbsp;campaign, and&nbsp;Bed-In for Peace, held in an Amsterdam hotel room during their honeymoon in 1969 and later in Montreal. In the late 1960s and early 1970s Ono and Lennon’s activities centered primarily on music, film, and activism. Ono released four solo albums and four collaborative albums with Lennon over just five years, while also making multiple films, including&nbsp;FLY,&nbsp;Freedom,&nbsp;“RAPE”,&nbsp;Apotheosis, and&nbsp;Imagine.&nbsp; In 1971 Ono had her first retrospective exhibition,&nbsp;This Is Not Here, at the Everson Art Museum. Later that year, her unofficial conceptual exhibition,&nbsp;Museum of Modern [F]art&nbsp;at the Museum of Modern Art was advertised in the Village Voice and documented as a new film.&nbsp; In 1973, Ono and Lennon announced the birth of a new conceptual country, Nutopia, with “no land, no boundaries, no passports, only people.” In 1975 the birth of their son, Sean Ono Lennon, influenced the couple’s decision to take a break from public life.&nbsp; In August 1980, Ono and Lennon returned to the studio to record their first album together since 1972.&nbsp;Double Fantasy&nbsp;was released in November and went on to win the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Less than a month after its release, Lennon was shot and killed by an assassin outside their home in New York.&nbsp; Emerging from the tragedy of Lennon’s death, Ono immersed herself in making music, releasing several albums during the decade. “It was the music that made me survive,” Ono said. After a long absence from exhibiting her art in museums and galleries, her 1989 solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art,&nbsp;Yoko Ono: Objects, Film, signaled a renewed interest in her art. She continued to exhibit extensively around the world. In 2000&nbsp;Yes Yoko Ono, a retrospective exhibition originating at the Japan Society Gallery in New York toured to thirteen international venues over four years. In 2007, Ono unveiled the&nbsp;IMAGINE PEACE TOWER&nbsp;on Videy, an island off the coast of Reykjavik, Iceland, giving a permanent home to her and Lennon’s long-standing commitment to world peace. In 2009, she was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 53rd Venice Biennale. That same year, Ono released&nbsp;Between My Head and the Sky, her first studio album as Plastic Ono Band since 1973. Chicago Artists Coalition Is Moving

Six Days a Week: Art Institute of Chicago Announces Wednesday Hours

In a shared statement this week, the gallery announced, "The Carl Hammer Gallery will close on April 1, and the current exhibition provides a historic representation of what Hammer envisioned for his gallery forty-five years ago. He opened the Hammer &amp; Hammer Gallery at 620 North Michigan in Chicago in 1979 while maintaining a full-time English teaching position at Evanston Township High School.” His “singular vision for the gallery was to present the very best of American folk and outsider art to a public that had limited knowledge or appreciation of such material. Carl haunted flea markets and antique shops, in and beyond the upper Midwest, becoming known for his discriminating eye, finding extraordinary examples of folk art and material culture.” With the work that he found—”examples of tramp art, memory jugs, objects made by inmates, one-of-a-kind shop signs, sideshow banners, waterfowl decoys and unique handmade objects”—many examples of the folk art were by artists who were unidentified, and others didn’t refer to themselves as artists. Carl represented them all with the utmost respect. The gallery soon became a gathering place for the growing community of Chicagoans intrigued by and embracing art from beyond the mainframe.” Early shows included Bill Traylor, S.L. Jones, Minnie Evans, Frank Jones, and other self-taught artists, but he promoted Chicago’s homegrown talent, including Gregory Warmack (aka Mr. Imagination), Albert Zahn, Joseph Yoakum, Lee Godie, William Dawson, Aldo Piacenza and Lee Godie. In the 1990s Carl represented the Henry Darger estate and expanded beyond the genre of self-taught artists.” He also drew from emerging artists at Chicago art schools, including Hollis Sigler, Ken Warneke, Chris Ware, Fred Stonehouse, Mary Lou Zelazney, ‘CJ’ Pyle, Martin Mull, Vanessa German, David Sharpe and Elizabeth Shreve. The gallery also showed Chicago Imagist artists and work by Roger Brown, Karl Wirsum, Ed Paschke and other Chicago artists. Hammer “extends his heartfelt thanks to the uncountable people–artists, fellow gallerists, clients, critics, curators, educators, scholars and students for their unequivocal support and for sharing in the years and joys of Carl Hammer Gallery.”

Armetta is well-known in Chicago, since for three decades Armetta she has been actively working with artists, collectors and others in the art world. She founded her first gallery in Chicago in 1996, Jennifer Armetta Fine Art, before moving to Los Angeles in 2000, where she continued her work as an art advisor. In 2004, Armetta returning to Chicago. Around that time she served as one of the founding members of the MCA Chicago’s acquisition board, Emerge, which is dedicated to bringing emerging artists into the museum’s permanent collection. In 2020 Armetta took on the role of Owner and Director of Aspect/Ratio Projects in Chicago, a gallery founded in 2012, by Jefferson Godard. Initially founded as a gallery focused on video art, Armetta oversaw the evolution of its programming to include emerging and mid-career, interdisciplinary artists focused on painting, photography and sculpture. In fall of 2021 Aspect/Ratio Projects changed its name to ENGAGE Projects, highlighting Jennifer’s personal mission of engaging with artists, communities and patrons in order to make art and its community more accessible to everyone. Armetta maintains deep and long-standing ties to the civic, fine arts and business communities in Chicago. She holds a seat on a number of boards, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; the Chicago Artists Coalition; The Chicago History Museum Costume Council and Artists in Public Schools.&nbsp; As the Executive Director of CAB, Armetta will leverage her extensive and wide-ranging experience working in both the fine arts and corporate sectors as she spearheads fundraising and programming initiatives along with securing new corporate and public sponsorships. Hyde Park Art Center Announces 2025 Residency Artists

Wrightwood 659 announced recently that for the first time in nearly three centuries, a historically significant marble statue of the Greek goddess Athena has been acquired and is now on view to the public. Halsted A&amp;A Foundation acquired the Roman statue, which dates to the first half of the first century CE. It is installed in the very modern, concrete-clad Tadao Ando-designed atrium of Wrightwood 659 beginning Saturday, January 25. Halsted A&amp;A bought the statue in 2023. Prior to making the journey to Chicago the sculpture had been in the same British family for nearly 260 years. Since the new acquisition, a team of conservation specialists has studied the&nbsp;Halsted Athena&nbsp;to determine its condition and the safest way to display it.&nbsp;The statue is a actually made from multiple parts. The head is from one sculpture, carved during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus (31 BC-14 CE), while the body is from another, carved during the time of Emperor Claudius (41-54 CE). “Like many sculptures sold in Rome in 18th-century Italy, the figure is composed of ancient and modern fragments. The practice of piecing together sculptures was not invariably an attempt to deceive customers. Rather, many buyers preferred complete pieces, even if composed of unrelated parts," notes Halsted A&amp;A curator Karen Manchester. "Now, scholars, students and visitors will be able to study the statue of Athena closely and interpret it from many perspectives, including those of art history, restoration practices and gender studies,” Manchester added, offering a window into a rich yet complex classical past. An official Community Design Unveiling&nbsp;will be held on February 22 at 1:00 pm at Apostolic Faith Church, 3823 S Indiana Ave. SSCAC invites those interested in learning more about the project to attend.&nbsp;SSCAC’s mission is developing and showcasing Black artists at every stage of their careers. The addition and rehabilitation project is estimated to cost up to $15M.&nbsp;Designed by Future Firm (architect), wrkSHäp&nbsp;kiloWatt&nbsp;(historic preservation architect), and to be built by a joint venture of general contractors Brown &amp; Momen, Inc.&nbsp;and Berglund Construction, with the advice of&nbsp;URBAN ReSOLVE&nbsp;(development advisor), the project will add over 10,000 square feet of space to the Center, which will expand visitor capacity by 398%, and provide accessibility to people with disabilities.&nbsp;The development team is diverse and local.&nbsp; The project will expand the Center’s capacity for exhibitions, art practice, research, and community engagement. Upon completion SSCAC will be able to facilitate many more exhibitions and interactions with Black artists while increasing access for community members, researchers, arts administrators, historians, and educators.&nbsp; The Center is working closely with the development team, including consultants and contractors, to ensure that the project aligns with SSCAC’s values and it advances equity and community-based development opportunities. The rehabilitation and expansion plan utilizes design approaches that honor the building’s historic character while introducing new spaces and upgraded building technology to meet the needs of the next generation of artists and visitors, and the Center’s significant on-site archives.&nbsp; The addition, planned for the rear of the original building, will provide a backdrop to SSCAC’s historic facade, creating a clear dialogue between the past and future. State-of-the-art systems, including a geothermal well field and solar-ready roof, will support the project’s LEED Silver goal, reflecting SSCAC’s commitment to sustainability and efficient operations for decades to come. New museum-grade galleries will provide spaces to preserve and exhibit SSCAC’s collection and loaned works. New flexible classrooms, improved archival storage areas, and updated office spaces will equip the center to support artists, educators, and staff. A rooftop gathering space will provide much-needed event space.&nbsp;&nbsp; A new stepped terrace, evoking the original and iconic front stoop of the Center, will further connect SSCAC to its neighborhood, welcoming Bronzeville residents and visitors alike. The project will both expand and modernize the Center, while honoring its rich legacy.&nbsp;The building’s facade will celebrate the pattern of nail holes found in the historic Margaret T. Burroughs Gallery,&nbsp;through the implementation of a custom perforated exterior panel system. Evocative of the nail holes created by previous generations of artists’ exhibiting in the gallery, the exterior panel system creates a symbolic link to the past, while allowing dappled natural light to enter the Center, creating an ethereal space and place to celebrate the work of Black artists for generations to come.
