Hunt was known for being as kind as he was prolific, and his career spanned more than 70 years, making an impact on public art, the field of sculpture and Chicago's global art reputation. Hunt was born and raised in Chicago, and he made a special point over many years to share how much living and working in Chicago meant to him.&nbsp;This spring Hunt shared with CGN that he was greatly influenced by his mother, an artist and librarian, and he spent much of his childhood enjoying museums and opera performances, fostering his passion for the arts. “I grew up with my parents on the Southside, near Woodlawn and Englewood.” He was soon captivated by sculpture, even building his own bedroom art studio where he could sculpt with clay long before he discovered wax and soldered wires, and eventually sheet metal and found objects like automative scrap. In his final years working as an artist he was commissioned to create "Bird Book," a special work for the Obama Center, under construction on Chicago's South Side and expected to open in 2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417539/avi7tgmthxzvpyzxw8we.jpg"><figcaption>Richard in his Chicago studio, &nbsp;March, 2012, preparing for his career overview exhibition: Mutable Currency, Past and Present, presented that summer. While he undoubtedly found his love for art in Chicago and received his formal education there, the decision to remain in his hometown, despite the pull of the art world nucleus forming in New York in the 1960s, did not come without sacrifices. Hunt said he really thought about what he would have found in New York versus Chicago, but that ultimately he decided not to move there. Chicago would always be home to Richard Hunt, but the world would be home to his art. People everywhere may still &nbsp;appreciate his soaring sculptures and understand his creative message of freedom for decades to come.Art dealer Tom McCormick, a friend of Hunt's for 50 years, shared, "Once, when interviewing Richard, I broached the question of his fame and legacy. I asked if he thought staying in Chicago, the city of his birth, might have somehow been a handicap to gaining a wider, international notoriety. He thought a moment and said he was grateful for all the good fortune that had come his way... the blessing of getting to do his work as he saw fit and it likely couldn't have happened any better, anywhere else. From classical music to literature to modern art, these themes are filtered through her early formative experience fleeing the Nazis with her family just before World War II and a lifetime examining that loss of home and identity.&nbsp; Born in 1929 in the Free City of Danzig, now Gdańsk in Poland, Klement’s childhood was imbued with music and literature primarily from her mother, a pianist. The family fled Europe following "Kristallnacht" (the Night of Broken Glass) in 1938 and settled in New York, where she studied art and was exposed to Cubism and Abstract Expressionism. In 1964 she moved to Chicago where she became active in the feminist movement, taught for 25 years at the University of Chicago, and developed her work into the powerful metaphoric and poetic images for which she became known. CGN wishes Deb and the CPC family the best in the months and years ahead! – GV&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-side"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419286/qre84glbt0ta7fe9cnl6.jpg"><figcaption>Deborah Maris Lader</figcaption></figure>The State of the Printshop &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;While the studio is in its prime,&nbsp;I have decided to begin the process of stepping away from directing the <a href="https://chicagoprintmakers.com">Chicago Printmakers Collaborative</a> in order for the workshop to chart its future course with younger leadership.&nbsp;During this transition, beginning in January 2024, some of our programming will be paused, including classes and gallery exhibitions. Read on:34 years ago, a new printmaking studio was started in a 2nd&nbsp;story walkup in Wicker Park, a raw space where cold Chicago winds gusted through old windows, and the nearest place to get a snack was cut rate liquor on Division St. The bricks rained salty residue on the tables and floor, but there was always someone’s baby or toddler around to wipe up the mess by crawling around in their overalls. A hoarder who collected broken xerox machines lived in the back and there was an occasional fire when he cooked on an old hotplate as he napped with his 5 cats. We never did get around to taping the drywall over there. A defunct printshop that had occupied the space had laid vacant for many years, and left behind one combo etching press, a stomp shear from 1898, some stones, and a metal bin full of solvent-soaked sawdust (in the old days they used to clean etching plates this way, but one live cigarette ember would have sent the whole building to the moon). Not exactly the stage set where dreams are made, but somehow, in my ignorant youth, I decided this was what I was meant to do. I was new to the city and learned its streets by combing through alleys looking for materials to build out the studio. I’m still convinced that the latticed board I hauled out of a hospital demolition site was used for postmortems. It served as our graining sink topper. I inherited a wooden drying rack from printmaker visionary June Wayne – completely useless but because it meant something, it stayed.The very best part was that printmakers showed up. As long as there was a press and ink and a flimsy fan to choke out the fumes, some really groovy artists made stuff from plates, blocks, stones and screens. It was a printy commune full of all sorts of amazing, creative characters with whom I was honored to work alongside. Some are still working in the shop, and we have watched one another progress and grow as artists. Others have spread their print wings across the globe and established themselves in universities, residencies, and in their own printmaking workshops. Two locations, two moves, and all these years later, our community has only grown and thrived and blossomed, and I have come to know and love my fellow print nerds like family.Our programming is currently robust. Classes are full, with growing waitlists. Our Bloom Residency recipients have been a joy to work with. Our Steamroller Fests have outgrown our back driveway. Our part time staff is spectacular, as well as our volunteers and interns. CPC is known around the world, and international visitors to Chicago seek us out to spread some ink or buy prints created by our artists.The CPC printshop is in a very healthy place.&nbsp;CPC was my first “baby”, and like my other actual offspring, there comes a time in which it’s appropriate to let go, and let those babies find their wings and thrive in the world on their own terms. I’m actually not planning on going anywhere and would very much like to be a working member of the studio. I’m very excited to focus more on my printmaking practice, my family, some new projects I’m cooking up, and some residencies and travel. I should mention that I’m in fine health (for an old bird - some of you were worried), but I do believe exiting while still on top of my game is the goal.My heart and soul will always be with this beautiful vibrant printmaking community that started from nothing, and I plan to stick around and watch it continue to thrive.&nbsp;So, what’s next for CPC?I have no idea what the future holds for CPC, but I’m excited about its potential. As I take a step back, I am open and looking for someone to assume operations and write the CPC’s next chapter. If you’re that person, hit me up. Or, if you know some smart, multitasking talent who has both a passion for print and a knack for business who might be the needle in the haystack with the energy to take on the task, forward this letter to them along with my contact. I’m open to all reasonable proposals. I own the building and will continue to be its benevolent landlord. I own the contents of CPC and would be open to some sort of long term “rent to own” arrangement or to just sell it outright, as long as it stays put and I can have access to its equipment. I’m open to a new name and focus for the workshop. Whatever. Or perhaps we just leave it as is – a shared studio full of a bunch of fellow print enthusiasts, just sharing resources and decision-making and presses and a whiskey on the printmaker party deck. A printy commune, kind of like where it all started in 1989, minus the solvent soaked sawdust. Let me know your thoughts.In the interim, I have a plan to simplify CPC programming starting Jan 1, 2024. It will be easier for someone to take over if things are a bit more quiet. I will break it down into sections so that it’s clear, and so that you can skip to the parts that interest/affect you:&nbsp;WORKING PRINTMAKER MEMBERSHIP and RESIDENT ARTISTS:For members and resident artists, much will remain the same, and you will love what we will call this “transitional period”. More access to presses and work time. More focus on your needs as working members of the studio. More say in what goes on around the studio. If everyone wants to do events, you can do them, and all the various tasks involved will be delegated by whomever takes the lead. If you don’t want to do events, we won’t do them. This is your studio, and you will have more responsibility to keep it organized, clean, and wonderful (there will be less staff, so cleaning and maintenance will be a group effort). I will personally be doing my own work alongside you, with less distractions like open public hours, classes, and other programming.If someone else is running the studio in a year, I trust that it will be someone who values the working membership program, as it certainly has always been the beating heart of the workshop. I envision more check ins and member gatherings. Even better news is that Maddie May will stay on as membership coordinator in 2024.&nbsp;CLASSES:We will pause classes in January and February and will not be offering our usual winter session of courses. Beginning in March, we will offer only the etching class for a 10-12 week session. In the summer, we will only offer Screenprinting. The reasoning behind this is that until someone new is running the studio, we need to simplify the giant task and cost of running classes. I hope that this will be a temporary pause on our full class offerings and that they will resume with new leadership (after all they are HUGELY popular). I will very much miss our beloved students during that time, and we have always emphasized EDUCATION as a primary goal in our mission, but my hope is that this pause is temporary. Private classes and work sessions will be completely suspended until a later date. We will not be offering SPRING SHORTS.&nbsp;GALLERY &amp; GALLERY ARTISTS:Beginning Jan 1, 2024, the CPC will no longer have regular open hours to the public. The gallery will only be open by appointment. I may develop gallery events based on the needs of guest curators, and our members may host other special exhibitions. CPC will retain a very focused roster of gallery artists, and their work will be available and shown on a rotating basis.&nbsp;We have begun the giant task of returning unsold work to many of the artists in our flatfile drawers. I am also returning all unsold artwork to our member artists, so that they can manage their own sales and exposure.&nbsp;THE ANNUAL SMALL PRINT SHOW:The 34th&nbsp;Annual Small Print Show that opens this December will be our last planned exhibition and will run through the end of February. After January 1, the show may be viewed by appointment. We will display a combination of existing inventory, a few pieces by each of our regular working member artists and inky friends, and some new work I’m bringing in from Thailand, Japan and Mexico. I will not be sending out an artist call. The public will be welcomed into our warm, art and gift filled space as usual, and the show will be more focused with fewer artists and it will be spectacular.&nbsp;&nbsp;FESTS, RESIDENCIES, EVENTS, and other programming:Aside from an offsite CPC exhibition scheduled at IL Wesleyan University in January 2024, and the possibility of returning to EXPO in April, we will not be doing other special events until further notice. The Bloom Residency will take a hiatus in 2024 and I’m REALLY hoping someone will resume it in some form in the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;ONLINE GALLERY/SHOPIFY PRESENCE:The CPC online gallery store will stay and become even more populated as we move existing flat file inventory in the coming year. We have many fans of this platform who love purchasing the work of our artists, and it will continue to serve our print enthusiasts nationwide.&nbsp;In closing, I am grateful for this community, and I celebrate you all for playing your part in its success. Once described as "a dancefloor mainstay of Chicago," Pickleman is recognized for his artistic vision, playful demeanor, and remarkable generosity, and this auction is a rare opportunity for art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in his creative world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://mcusercontent.com/50e5c1be866e9aaa28cfec1db/images/6277f59b-71e5-ab6f-61fc-40b3e5390a0b.jpg" alt=""></figure>&nbsp;Amassing art since he was a teenager, Pickleman attended Boston University where he studied English literature—and met Leslie Bodenstein, who would become his partner in life and at JNL Graphic Design. The pair founded the studio in 1992, working from a decommissioned post office in Chicago's River North area and merging their art and design sensibilities with tremendous success. "To live in Chicago is to encounter Jason Pickleman’s work," according to the Chicago Tribune, and local clients have included Millennium Park, Avec, Blackbird, Time Out Chicago, Chicago Transit Authority, Poetry Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, EXPO Chicago, and the Field Museum. Beyond the Windy City limits, JNL has worked with clients including the Prada Foundation and Skinny Pop Popcorn, for whom they designed Warhol-inspired packaging.&nbsp;The space between commercial and contemporary art has been of the utmost importance to Pickleman, who has defined himself by his ability to move effortlessly through these worlds as both an artist and collector. Pickleman was among the creators featured in the 2007 exhibition Young Chicago at the Art Institute of Chicago, and his art now resides in the institution's permanent collection. His works have been shown at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Chicago Design Museum, Ken Saunders Gallery, and the Neon and Light Museum, among others. We look forward to having him in Chicago again.”&nbsp;Responding to humanity’s environmental crisis and the unfathomable power and intelligence of AI technologies, Dr. Kang’s site-specific commission Only in the Dark will unfold over three immersive scenes that mix digital animations with AI-generated imageries to explore how we can think collectively about a more inclusive future. The work begins with a scene depicting the shifting structure of THE MART, alluding to a new beginning. The second scene uses biophilic designs to illustrate the coexistence of nature and humans. Ending with a hopeful future, the final vignette depicts a human dancing in water surrounded by a beautiful halo created from the light bouncing off the water’s surface.&nbsp;‘Only in the Dark’ is presented in partnership with Superblue, where Dr. Kang is the latest addition to the gallery’s artist roster. &nbsp;&nbsp;In creating ‘Only in the Dark,’ Dr. Kang was inspired by THE MART and its history and position as a leader in sustainable practices. Owned and operated by Vornado Realty Trust, THE MART is an architectural icon and an internationally recognized leader in culture, design and technology. Known colloquially as a “city within a city,” THE MART opened as the largest building in the world in 1930 and has continuously evolved to incorporate the latest in environmental practices. The weekend emphasizes Chicago’s multitude of non-conventional exhibition spaces as well as the geographic range spanning neighborhoods from Streeterville to West Town, Englewood, and Irving Park to encourage participants to explore the full breadth of the city’s creativity.&nbsp;CXW will also welcome the city’s next generation of talented business, civic, and philanthropic leaders to engage with gallerists, artists, and curators through community dinners, programming, and a closing celebration that aims to cultivate the relationships needed for the city’s arts scene to continue to thrive.&nbsp;Over 50 galleries, institutions, and artist-run spaces are aligning to present a weekend of exhibition openings, activations, and events this fall, showcasing art throughout Chicago’s many neighborhoods for the inaugural Chicago Exhibition Weekend. The landmark weekend (September 29 to October 1, 2023) is co-presented by EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, and Chicago-based cultural agency Gertie.&nbsp;“EXPO CHICAGO is not just one week of the year, our program is year-round. EXPO CHICAGO Announces Chicago Exhibition Weekend 2023

Key has been appointed the Museum’s Executive Director, effective immediately. Key joined the Museum earlier this year as Interim Executive Director. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Key’s appointment comes after a national search led by Koya Partners and the Driehaus Museum Search Committee led by Zach Lazar, Chair of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. &nbsp; “Lisa is the right person at the right time for the Driehaus Museum. She is a creative, visionary leader with a breadth of museum expertise. &nbsp;As Interim Executive Director, Lisa already has made so many significant contributions to the Museum,” said Lazar. “She has worked closely with the Board and the staff to direct the next few years of the Museum’s growth including facilitating the necessary steps to get the Murphy Auditorium renovation work underway and reinvigorating the Museum’s philanthropic and earned giving. Under her leadership, she has built a huge amount of trust with our staff and I know I speak for them when I say how excited we are to have Lisa at the helm to lead this jewel-box of an institution into its future.” &nbsp; As Executive Director, Key will provide leadership oversight of strategy, programs, fundraising, advocacy efforts, finances, and operations. &nbsp;Most importantly, she will continue to guide implementation of the museum’s future goals which calls for the Museum to move into a new chapter through physical expansion and increased programming. The Driehaus Museum endeavors to become a self-sustaining organization to further enshrine its reputation as a center for artistic excellence that seeks to make decorative and fine art more accessible, to draw connections between the past and present to illuminate our cultural heritage, and to preserve the legacy of Richard H. Driehaus, its founder. &nbsp; “The Driehaus Museum is at a unique inflection point in its 15-year history and I am excited to lead this organization at this pivotal time.” says Key. “In 2024, we will reopen the John B. Murphy Memorial Auditorium as part of the Driehaus Museum campus, expanding our ability to reach out to all Chicagoans as a new cultural center that focuses on art, architecture and design.” &nbsp; “Richard Driehaus was a visionary and the Museum is a key part of his enduring legacy,” Key continued. “I am deeply committed to being a steward of that legacy as I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of museums. And there’s no place quite like the Driehaus Museum to contribute to local, national, and global dialogues about the relevance of the art and design of the past to the conversations of the present and future. The Museum remains committed to not only our historic past but to presenting contemporary artists whose work reflects the concepts, ideas and even the materiality of our historic buildings.” &nbsp; Ms. Key came to the Driehaus Museum with extensive museum management experience in strategic planning, philanthropy, and governance, having served as Interim Director at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago before being named Deputy Director there. During her tenure at the MCA, she focused on stabilizing the museum’s budget and increasing stakeholder engagement. &nbsp;&nbsp;While at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was the Vice-President of Institutional Advancement, she led the campaign to create and fund the Modern Wing. She is co-chair of Board of Enrich Chicago and has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She holds an MA in Arts Administration from Indiana University and a BA in Art History and Communications from Valparaiso University.&nbsp;&nbsp;</body></html>
