<h3>What waits is often disguised (for William Stratford)&nbsp;at Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery</h3>

In his poem &quot;Asphodel, That Greeny Flower&quot;&nbsp;William Carlos Williams wrote, &quot;It is difficult/to get the news from poems/yet men die miserably every day/for lack/of what is found there.&quot;&nbsp;Artist Charles Matson Lume reaffirms Williams&#39; belief in the importance of art in society with&nbsp;his new installation titled&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/what-waits-is-often-disguised-for-william-stafford">What waits is often disguised (for William Stratford)</a>.&nbsp;Lume manipulates light and common materials like craft paper and plastic trinkets&nbsp;to create ephemeral works of art.

Attend an opening reception and artist talk with Lume&nbsp;on Monday, November 7&nbsp;from 12-1:30pm at <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/institutions/robert-f-decaprio-art-gallery-moraine-valley-community-college">Robert F. DeCaprio Art Gallery</a> at Moraine Valley Community College. The exhibition will be on display&nbsp;from November 7-December 17, 2016.

<h3>The Last Seduction&nbsp;at Bert Green Fine Art</h3>

Oli Rodriguez, a transgender artist based in Chicago,&nbsp;presents a new series of work at Bert Green Fine Art.&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/oli-rodriguez-the-last-seduction">The Last Seduction</a> recontextualizes figures from predominantly white, hetero-normative, and European classical images. Rodriguez uses late nineteenth century paintings, including&nbsp;as&nbsp;&Eacute;variste Vital Luminais&#39;s <a href="http://mascipo.in2p3.fr/art-e-info/IMG/distant/jpg/01-Evariste-80be.jpg">L&#39;Enl&egrave;vement</a>&nbsp;and &Eacute;douard Manet&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Nymphe_surprise">La Nymphe surprise</a>, as the backgrounds for his digitally altered photographs featuring&nbsp;non-gender conforming models. With new subjects in the paintings, Rodriguez offers a modern interpretation of the art historical canon.

The Last Seduction will be on display at <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/bert-green-fine-art--2">Bert Green Fine Art</a> from November 12-December 17, 2016.

<h3>Corrections&nbsp;at Filter Photo</h3>

Influenced by his work as a tracker for Linn County Juvenile Detention and Diverse Services in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, photographer Zora J Murff presents a new body of work titled&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/corrections-zora-j-murff">Corrections</a>&nbsp;at Filter Photo. In his&nbsp;position as&nbsp;tracker, Murff was responsible for making sure that convicted youth&nbsp;followed through on the terms of their probation, which often included community service, drug screening and electronic monitoring. In the&nbsp;series, Murff documents many of the individuals he worked with to create&nbsp;complex portraits that reflect the inconsistencies of the juvenille detention and incarceration system&nbsp;in the United States.&nbsp;

The exhibition will be on display at <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/filter-photo">Filter Photo</a> from November 4-26, 2016. The gallery will host an opening reception, along with artist talk and book signing, from 6-9pm on Friday, November 4.

<h3>Irma May&nbsp;at Elephant Room Gallery</h3>

Hungarian born, Chicago based artist Zs&oacute;fia&nbsp;&Ouml;tv&ouml;s presents her new series of work based on the partially biographical character&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/zsofia-otvos-irma-may">Irma May</a>.&nbsp;&Ouml;tv&ouml;s developed a storyline about this early twentieth century&nbsp;character, who is a painter and collector herself.&nbsp;Alongside paintings, the exhibition also features large-scale&nbsp;drawings&nbsp;on paper.

The series will be on display at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/elephant-room-gallery">Elephant Room Gallery</a>&nbsp;in Bridgeport on Sunday, November 7 from 3-7pm and by appointment on November 7-8 from 5-8pm.

Explore Chicago&rsquo;s hidden wonders with Open House Chicago, open this Saturday, October&nbsp;15 through Sunday, October&nbsp;16. The free public festival, organized by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, offers&nbsp;exclusive public access to over 200 buildings across Chicago.&nbsp;Sneak a peek inside some of Chicago&rsquo;s architectural masterpieces, impressive&nbsp;skyscrapers, and historic&nbsp;landmarks.

<h3>The Clarke House Museum</h3>

Built in 1836, the <a href="http://openhousechicago.org/sites/site/clarke-house-museum/">Clarke House Museum</a> is Chicago&rsquo;s oldest house. Located in the city&rsquo;s Prairie Avenue Historic District, the home was originally built for businessman Henry B. Clarke during the city&rsquo;s formative years, predating the Civil War. The house is modeled after Greek Revival style, and has a unique past, surviving fires, belonging to a church, and being moved - twice. The home became a Chicago landmark on Oct. 14, 1970 and was officially purchased by the City of Chicago in 1977.

Tours of the House Museum are available from 10am-4pm

<h3>LondonHouse Hotel</h3>

Surrounding the Michigan Avenue bridge, the <a href="http://openhousechicago.org/sites/site/londonhouse-chicago-london-guarantee-accident-building/">LondonHouse Hotel</a> is considered one of Chicago&rsquo;s &ldquo;Big Four&rdquo; skyscrapers. Originally the London Guarantee Building built in 1923 by Alfred S. Alschuler, the high rise was bought in 2013 by Oxford Capital Group in the midst of the city&rsquo;s hotel boom and has since been restored. The building features Neo-Classical and Art Deco designs, along with a new 22-story glass tower addition.

Take a tour of the historic lobby, open to the public from 12-4pm

<h3>Colvin House</h3>

Opening its doors to the public for the first time, don&rsquo;t miss the opportunity to explore the <a href="http://openhousechicago.org/sites/site/colvin-house/#controls">Colvin House</a>, located in the northern Edgewater neighborhood. Built in 1909 by architect George Maher, the home remained a private residence for over a century. The Prairie-Style, American Foursquare mansion is now being transformed into an event space. Plastered with a plain, yellow brick exterior, the mansion opens its doors to ornate interior features, modeling 1920s movie palace designs. The home was deemed a Chicago landmark in 1994.

View the 6,000 square ft. mansion&rsquo;s intricate interior design, open from 9am-5pm.

<h3>St. John Cantius Roman Catholic Church</h3>

Voted the &ldquo;Most Beautiful Church in America&rdquo; by the Granda Liturgical Arts in 2016, attendees can view the stunning artwork and architecture of the <a href="http://openhousechicago.org/sites/site/st-john-cantius-roman-catholic-church/">St. John Cantius Roman Catholic Church</a>. Founded by Polish immigrants, the church was designed by Adolphus Druiding and built in 1898 over a five year period. St John&rsquo;s features Baroque-style interior with lofty, painted ceilings harking to the 18th-century Krakow. Less than a mile from Water Tower and Chicago Avenue, St. John&rsquo;s is the Polish cathedral closest to downtown. The church also features a 130 ft. tower, visible from the Kennedy Expressway. &nbsp;

St. John Cantius Roman Catholic Church will be open to the public from 12-4pm on Saturday, and 3-5pm on Sunday.

Open House Chicago Features Architectural Masterpieces, Impressive Skyscrapers and Historic Landmarks

This fall, the <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/institutions/northern-illinois-university-niu-art-museum">NIU&nbsp;Art Museum</a> celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Center for Burma Studies. The museum, located on Northern Illinois University&#39;s campus in DeKalb, is hosting a suite of four exhibitions within their 5,000 square foot space. <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/kaleidoscope-of-burmese-art-celebrating-30-years-of-art-at-the-center-for-burma-studies">Kaleidoscope of Burmese Art</a>&nbsp;celebrates the rich collection of the Center, which is the only academic organization of its kind in&nbsp;the world. Curated by&nbsp;Catherine Raymond, director of the Center,&nbsp;the exhibitions&nbsp;bring together iconic objects from the NIU collection alongside work from contemporary Burmese artists.

Accompanying the exhibitions are a number of programs including <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/from-paper-to-skin-tattoos-in-burmese-cultures">a lecture about the tradition of tattoos in Burmese culture</a>, <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/lepeyet-and-palata-exploring-burmese-culinary-traditions">a sampling of Burmese cuisine</a>, and <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/the-art-of-cartography-in-ancient-burma">an investigation of map-making traditions in Ancient Burma</a>.

Kaleidoscope of Burmese Art: Now on View at the NIU Art Museum

With fall in full season, October comes with&nbsp;an air of mystery and eerie intrigue.&nbsp;Delve into all things dark and find beauty in the macabre with these featured exhibitions.&nbsp;

<h3>Double Diablerie&nbsp;at International Currents Gallery</h3>

View art that dares to dance with the devil himself. The John David Mooney Foundation will be featuring Double Diablerie, an exhibition of large scale screen prints, lithographs, etchings, and four limited edition artist books plus two unbound editions. The exhibition is composed of works by Scottish artists Ian Howard and Arthur Watson and Japanese artists Sotaro Ide and Hisashi Kurachi.

Howard and Watson were inspired by the devil&rsquo;s influence in regional Scottish folklore, and found corresponding themes in the prints of Ide and Kurachi. The exhibition connects Celtic Scotland and Nippon (ancient Japan) by examining the two cultures&rsquo; relationships with the devil through geography, including mountains named for the Devil, groves of trees with spiritual significance, incantations, scapegoat rituals and ghostly manifestations. The show melds the distant landscapes of Japan and Scotland into one cohesive space inspired by the devil.

The exhibition will run through&nbsp;October 20, 2016 at the <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/john-david-mooney-foundation-international-currents-gallery">International Currents Gallery</a>.

<h3>Dia de los Muertos: A celebration of lives lived&nbsp;at The Rangefinder Gallery at Tamarkin Camera</h3>

Three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee Joe Patronite honors the traditional Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos with his photography series entitled Dia de los Muertos - a celebration of lives lived. Wandering the streets of Tucson, Arizona on the morning of the All Souls Procession, Patronite draws upon his street photography experience as a photojournalist to capture what he coins &ldquo;images which reflect quirkiness in society, mixed with spontaneity and some humor.&rdquo;

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, focuses on celebrating and honoring past loved ones who have since departed. The ongoing photography project offers a historical view of Mexican/Latin culture and the holiday&rsquo;s theme of remembrance. Patronite captures the lavishness of the holiday and the processions, juxtaposed with the solemn reverence of its attendees.

The project will be on display at <a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/the-rangefinder-gallery-at-tamarkin-camera">The Rangefinder Gallery</a> with an opening reception on Friday, October 9.&nbsp;

<h3>Dangerous Lullabies II&nbsp;at Lakeside Arts Park at the Dole</h3>

These lullabies don&rsquo;t offer the relief of sleep, but instead draw viewers towards the dark. Opening for its second year, Dangerous Lullabies II features artwork that explores the allure of that deemed frightening. Paintings, sculptures, and fine art selected by artists from across the country highlight the disturbing beauty and curious attraction to the dark and unsettling.

The historic Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake, IL&nbsp;will provide an eerie backdrop for the exhibition, as the mansion is rumored to be haunted by the previous owner Eliza Ringling, widow of famous circus magnate Al Ringling. The show is curated by J + K Isacson in partnership with the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park and features artists: Eli Powell, Randall Stringer, Fred Larucci, Carolyn Bouso, Vince Natale, and more.

Gallery Walks and Tours

The Art Institute of Chicago is known around the world as a top-tier museum, with a vast, deep collection of works, from major Impressionist paintings to decorative arts, to Modern and Contemporary works. But the blockbusters aside, it is also&nbsp;renowned for its collections of master drawings, both publicly and privately held. The Art Institute of Chicago has been collecting these works for over a century and has substantial world-class holdings&mdash;particularly with regard to drawings of the French and Italian schools.

The stunning&nbsp;exhibition now on view is the final exhibition curated by long-time Prints Department head Suzanne McCullagh, who recently retired. Together with her team of experts, she&nbsp;highlights a selection of master drawings from the 17th to mid-20th century that have been purchased by the museum over the past 25 years but have not yet had occasion to be shown.

Though many works are in some ways familiar to us, whether they are by internationally reknown artists or they resemble other works that have been shown at the museum, seeing them together for the first time is enlightening. Surprises include a modest but stunning early beach landscape by Edgar Degas,&nbsp;a preparatory drawing&nbsp;for an Art Institute star painting&nbsp;Paris Street; Rainy Day&nbsp;by Gustave Caillebotte, as well as a sketch book that visitors may digitally page through. Finally, the survey culminates with images from the first half of the 20th century, among them the momentous pastel&nbsp;January&nbsp;by Grant Wood, creator of another Art Institute icon,&nbsp;American Gothic.

The works are a delight to behold and contemplate and are representative of all the surprises the Art Institute continues to share with the public.&nbsp;

A Look Back: Master Drawings Unveiled: 25 Years of Major Acquisitions at the Art Institute of Chicago

September is a busy time in Chicago&#39;s art community, with new shows opening in all the galleries, museum exhibitions happening around the city and suburbs, and of course the season&#39;s art fair frenzy - EXPO first in late September and then SOFA in November. Also happening at the same time as EXPO, in the West Loop at the Chicago Artists Coalition, is&nbsp;The Annual,&nbsp;a&nbsp;yearly sales exhibition celebrating cutting-edge Chicago-based artists.

Arranged by a guest curator, The Annual creates an accessible forum for emerging collectors to discover affordable new work and engage directly with its creators. This year The Annual will run for two weeks on either end of EXPO Chicago, opening Friday, September 16 and closing on Thursday, September 29.

SHOWROOM is curated by Edra Soto, and this year&#39;s Annual is the strongest to-date. From The Annual&#39;s website: &quot;SHOWROOM,&nbsp;is an installation unto itself, bringing together work influenced by fundamental aspects of interior architecture and&nbsp;design&nbsp;objects, and placing them on custom made furniture by Dock 6 Collective.&nbsp;SHOWROOM&nbsp;aims to draw new connections between our understanding of the relationship between art and design, and to make us question our assumptions.&nbsp;SHOWROOM&nbsp;exists within that delicate balance of the expressive world and the pragmatically crafted architecture that holds it.&quot;&nbsp;

Stop in to see the works on view by many of Chicago&#39;s rising stars. Highlights include works by Alberto Aguilar, Mariano Chavez, Maria Gaspar, Anna Kunz, Leonard Suryajaya, Ann Toebbe, and Stacia Yeapanis.

The Annual, a fundraising exhibition of emerging art, takes place every year at the Chicago Artists Coalition.

SHOWROOM: The Annual at Chicago Artists Coalition

Running in tangent with EXPO Chicago, Art After Hours is a citywide open gallery night inviting the public and EXPO Chicago visitors to view city art spaces during extended hours. The event features galleries, alternative spaces, and performance venues from across the city and surrounding suburbs. Coinciding with various evening exhibition openings, Art After Hours acts as an exciting kick-off to the fall art season.

Art After Hours will take place Friday, September 23 from 6-9pm. Below are highlights from a few&nbsp;of the many art spaces participating in the event.

&nbsp;

<h3>Woman Made Gallery</h3>

Woman Made Gallery works to promote female-identifying women in the arts by offering a space for exhibitions, open studio space, and other programs. The galley is featuring artist-in-residence Adele Supreme, who will be creating original work in the studio space. Supreme specializes in large scale erotic artwork expressing female sexuality by reclaiming images of sexual oppression.

Woman Made Gallery will hold public open studios from September 22 through September 30, 2016.

<h3>Volume Gallery</h3>

Volume Gallery will be displaying Dead Frame, the third solo exhibition by Thaddeus Wolfe. In his new exhibition, Wolfe builds off his previous Assemblage series, continuing his craft of glassblowing and concentrating on the interaction of light through a glass medium. The phrase &ldquo;dead frame&rdquo; refers to the unseen structure on which neon tubes are mounted, a term derived from the neon sign industry. Wolfe has incorporated these neon structures into his newest works.

Dead Frame is on display from September 17 through November 5, 2016.

<h3>Catherine Edelman Gallery</h3>

<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/catherine-edelman-gallery">Catherine Edelman Gallery</a> will be featuring the first solo exhibition of Chicago-based photographer Clarissa Bonet entitled City Space + Stray Lights. City Space explores the nature of urban environments and the city&#39;s emotional and psychological impact on the body. In Stray Light, Bonet captures city landscapes by carefully constructing images of illuminated building windows at night-time to create a new, urban cosmos. Both inspired by urban landscape, the two photography exhibitions are presented in tangent with one another.

City Space + Stray Light is open from September 9 through October 29, 2016.

<h3>Wabash Arts Corridor</h3>

<h3>Wabash Arts Corridor</h3>

Enjoy a free tour of the internationally renowned Wabash Arts Corridor, guided by curator Neysa Page-Lieberman. Located in Chicago&rsquo;s South Loop, the public arts hub features over 50 large-scale street art murals and installations, one of the largest concentrations in any city-center nationwide. The Wabash Arts Corridor was produced in partnership with Columbia College and the City of Chicago&rsquo;s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. The tour will last one hour, but attendees are welcome to stay for an additional art walk of the various Columbia College Chicago galleries.

The Wabash Arts Corridor tour will meet in the lobby of 623 S. Wabash Ave. at 6pm on Friday, September 23.

<h3>Ed Paschke Art Center</h3>

The Ed Paschke Art Center will feature the opening of &ldquo;Beta,&rdquo; the inaugural solo exhibition of artist Wasalu Jaco, or more popularly known as hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco. The show will feature a new work of acrylic on canvas painting, complete with a stamp of Jaco&rsquo;s signature mori skull symbol. Wasalu Jaco is a three time Grammy Award nominated musician, visual artist, and entrepreneur from Chicago&rsquo;s West Side. He had his first body of work featured at the SoHo House of Chicago in 2015 and used his own painting as cover art for his latest studio album &ldquo;Tetsuo &amp; Youth.&rdquo;

&ldquo;Beta&rdquo; will open September 23 and be on display until November 30, 2016.

Every two years, the Hyde Park Art Center surveys the pulse of contemporary art produced by students graduating from Chicago&rsquo;s top MFA programs. The result is an expansive exhibition that finds its way into every inch of the first floor of the Art Center. The show features an impressive roster of 22 artists from Columbia College Chicago (CCC), Northwestern University (NU), the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), the University of Chicago (UC), and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Here are a few highlights:

<h3>Angela Lopez (NU 2015)</h3>

Lining the wall of the main hallway on the first floor of the Hyde Park Art Center are 50 watercolor paintings by Angela Lopez, which form a singular work titled Dip Hands In. The conceit is simple: in each composition Lopez freeze-frames a pair of hands as they immerse into an unknown black liquid. But the quality of the line and the texture of paint create a powerful portrait of severed hands as they transform under the pressure of repeated stains.

<h3>Gulsah Mursaloglu (SAIC 2015)</h3>

In Gulsah Mursaloglu&rsquo;s installation titled Ubiquitous Notes for a Fellow Traveler, three turquoise columns reach up to the ceiling of the main gallery. From a distance, the columns appear to be made of oversized turquoise beads fed onto a vertical rod. However, the installation lays bare the device: ice cube trays stacked underneath a wooden table were used as molds for casting toothpaste. The material resists any sense of permanence and will slowly turn from bright turquoise to a faded green throughout the course of the exhibition. Despite their fragility, the turquoise lines ground the installation, designating a space for Mursaloglu within the crowded gallery. Other parts of Mursaloglu&rsquo;s installation highlight the slow passage of time. Barnacle-like structures made from precisely placed sunflower seeds emerge from the corners of the shelf to suggest the continuation of growth. The artist restricts herself to everyday materials: toothpaste, graphite, sunflower seeds, red yarn, and water placed in cups of varying heights. With her found media, Mursaloglu imbeds the process of creation within the presentation of the work.

<h3>Jeff Prokash (SAIC 2015)</h3>

Jeff Prokash, a meticulous and measured sculptor, presents an impressive installation of his ongoing series Objects for a Production in Eleven Acts. Various objects, including concrete slumps, foam rectangles and moving blankets, are carefully placed on five metal industrial shelves. In other iterations, Prokash has worked on a horizontal plane, laying the objects out for careful inspection. At the Hyde Park Art Center, the sculptor works vertically, forcing viewers to crane their heads to see what&rsquo;s on the highest shelf. Prokash&rsquo;s collection of found and made objects provokes questions of conservation methods, storage practices, and public accessibility while drawing upon the various histories of his sourced objects. For instance in Stasi Files, a series of photographs in an adjacent hallway, Prokash visited Berlin to document the archives of the former German Democratic Republic&rsquo;s State Security Service.

<h3>Orkideh Torabi (SAIC 2016)</h3>

Hung in a large grid, Orkideh Torabi&rsquo;s series of cartoonish characters offer slight smiles, over-the-shoulder eyebrow raises and muted stares. For Torabi, the portraits, many of which are set against tiled backdrops, aim to mock Iranian men who dominate her country&rsquo;s patriarchy. But within this context, the anonymous set form a troupe of outlaws, a band of jokers unwittingly as ridiculous as a commedia dell&rsquo;arte performance. Torabi&rsquo;s staining technique and loose handling produces soft washes of color with a faded, yet striking color palette.

<h3>Yael Ben-Simon (SAIC 2015)</h3>

Yael Ben-Simon&rsquo;s acrylic and oil paintings simultaneously conjure digital and physical worlds. In I can change, seemingly digital fabric fragments billow across the two-dimensional canvas. Beneath the bright pink and black patterns are yet more layers: an off white tattered sheet appears to stretch across a textured, multicolored background. The composition alludes to a world beyond the canvas; the painting itself seems to be a small part of a larger whole.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ground Floor at the Hyde Park Art Center

The fall art season kicks off Friday, September 9. Openings take place across the city in gallery centers and institutions, with the exhibitions on view for the next several weeks. The fall kick-off is perhaps the most well known focal point of the city&#39;s visual arts calendar, as it offers a chance to get back into the galleries, to meet artists, mingle with friends and to experience what is new. &nbsp;This season the galleries are unveiling their top artists and most thoughtful shows with a wide range of offerings.

There are also some stellar shows taking place in area museums, and many cultural venues and institutions are partnering with international art fair EXPO Chicago for this year&#39;s <a href="http://expochicago.com/expo-art-week">EXPO Art Week</a>, which begins September 19 and runs through the fair (Sept 22-25.)&nbsp;

All eyes are on Chicago right now, and there is so much exciting art to see and enjoy, so many perspectives to view and so many artists to celebrate.&nbsp;

Early Fall Art Highlights

In conjunction with the 25th Anniversary of Ukraine&rsquo;s independence, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) celebrates with a new exhibition.&nbsp;Reality Check: Directions in Contemporary Art Since Ukrainian Independence&nbsp;is on view August 26-November 27, 2016.

The exhibition presents the work of eight contemporary artists affected by the country&rsquo;s 1991 independence. Reality Check examines the strictures imposed during the Soviet Union with installations, sculptures, and paintings by artists working in the United States, Canada, and Ukraine.&nbsp;For Ukrainian professional artists, the collapse of the Soviet Union created an opportunity to learn and engage with current artistic developments occurring in the west, as well as delve into those of the past from which they had been excluded.

This June, the Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival celebrates its fifth year, a large feat for the non-profit organization that has been deemed &ldquo;a small festival with a big heart.&rdquo; The year&#39;s iteration will be packed with twenty-five performances over the course of five days (June 1-5), in honor of the anniversary. The multi-day event includes live performances in the main gallery at Defibrillator, durational performance installations in the storefront window, and performances&nbsp;outside in the surrounding neighborhood near Eckhart Park. The festival will also feature a video series, curated by assistant director&nbsp;Giana Gambino&nbsp;and Julia Laffin, and a new&nbsp;nightly experimental food series that hopes to foster discourse about the day&#39;s&nbsp;performances.

Rapid Pulse began as a partnership between Gambino and Joseph Ravens, who met in 2011 and conceptualized the idea of a multi-day festival that would bring esteemed performance artists from around the world to Chicago. Ravens, the director of Defibrillator, has co-organized the festival with Gambino for the past five years. While the festival has scaled back from its original 10-day marathon of performances, this year is certain to bring an impressive range of work from artists including Linda Mary Montano, Sarah &amp; Joseph Belknap, Sarah Trouche and Edra Soto.

Montano is an impressive veteran of the performance art scene. She famously spent a year tied by a length of rope to Taiwanese artist Teching Hsieh for his performance Art/Life: One Year Performance, 1983-84. Some of her&nbsp;other artistic undertakings&nbsp;include wearing monochromatic garments for seven-year intervals, singing in a scissor lift&nbsp;for seven hours and being blindfolded for seven days. Montano will close the Rapid Pulse festival with an overnight workshop titled Sleepathon, in which she has invited the public to spend the night with her in the gallery space. &nbsp;

Self-taught artist Tony Fitzpatrick is a living, breathing embodiment of Chicago toughness, yet his latest exhibition, The Secret Birds,&nbsp;on view at DePaul Art Museum is filled with the peace and music of hundreds of birds flitting amongst poetry. Fitzpatrick has also published a new book, which accompanies the exhibition.&nbsp;

Chicago artist Barbara Rossi, once a Catholic nun, and part of the famous Imagists group of artists, is exhibiting key works from the 1960s and 70s, drawings as well as paintings on Plexiglass,&nbsp;which were pivitol to her artistic evolution and help reveal&nbsp;the artist&#39;s significant role in&nbsp;our own local art history. Poor Traits is Rossi&#39;s first solo show in Chicago in a quarter century.&nbsp;

Chicago is proud to claim international artist Dzine/Carlos Rolon as its own, and for the first time in 12 years, the artist&#39;s work is on view here at home at the Chicago Cultural Center for a solo exhibition.&nbsp;

Dzine&#39;s style is distinct - bright colors, sparkles, bold shapes, designs and vignettes - and&nbsp;there is always much to behold, contemplate and admire in the artist&#39;s work. And though it is often mesmerizingly&nbsp;beautiful, there is much more to it than just looks, proving that the artist defies stereotypes and categorization.&nbsp;Rolon&#39;s current show highlights his social explorations and the immersive environments he creates in order to put viewers in a certain state of mind. By getting viewers to stop and look, he can also make them think (sometimes even looking in the mirror.)&nbsp;

At the Cultural Center,&nbsp;multiple works are&nbsp;placed throughout three rooms on the second floor. Viewers first encounter a Caribbean courtyard, then move past pieces composed of crushed glass, as well as gold leaf and painstakingly painted flowers.&nbsp;A large-scale installation is devoted to&nbsp;boxing sport and culture. A neon pink afrocomb towers in the final room, not far from&nbsp;Nomadic Habitat (Hustleman) Cart, a collaboration with Chicago street vendor Garland Gantt (pictured at top of page). Originally created for the Chicago Architecture Biennial in connection with the Arts Incubator / Arts + Public Life program at the University of Chicago.

This Sunday May 15, the Arts Incubator at the University of Chicago will be hosting an event celebrating the collaboration between Fatima Traore, a Malian-American professional hair braider, and Sarah Beth Woods, a Chicago-based sculptor. The two met at a hair braider&rsquo;s summit in 2013 and quickly developed a friendship, which eventually lead to their current project BRAID/WORK.

Woods approached Traore at the summit and asked to braid her hair, and Traore happily agreed. Woods, a Caucasian woman, was hesitant about wearing cornrows because of the implied cultural appropriation, she noted on a <a href="https://soundcloud.com/vocalos-barber-shop-show/bss-262-braidwork">recent episode of the Barber Shop Show</a>, hosted by Richard Steele. However, she greatly admired Traore&rsquo;s techniques, and eventually, it provided both artists the opportunity to explore and celebrate the complexity of hair braiding traditions.

Traore immigrated to New York City to become an architect, but she said in the interview, &ldquo;Life brought my talent out.&rdquo; She moved to Harlem and began learning American style hair braiding techniques, which differed from what she had been taught in Mali. She recalled that, &ldquo;One client came to the salon, she wanted one big braid. It was so funny to my eyes, I went to the shop owner and said, &lsquo;One big braid, most of the time [in Mali] we do it on dead people, but she&rsquo;s alive and she&rsquo;s requesting it!&rsquo; She said, &lsquo;Well, this is America, just do it!&rsquo; It was very frightening. It was eye-opening for me.&rdquo; Traore remarked that in Mali hair braiding often designates social and economic status, while in the United States any style can be used at any time.

Woods, on the other hand, is a sculptor interested in the relationship between artifice and nature. She spent two years teaching at a school in Ashburn, where she was intrigued by the visual landscape of barbershops and beauty salons on every other corner. She now spends hours looking through dollar stores and beauty supply stores incorporating hair weaves, hair buns, and nail tips into her work.

Traore and Woods are currently artists-in-residence for the Crossing Boundaries program sponsored by the University of Chicago. The opportunity to continue their collaboration has resulted in an exhibition that will be opening on July 8 at RootWork Gallery, a new gallery space in Pilsen.

Tracie D. Hall, Deputy Commissioner for DCASE who curated the exhibition, writes:

<blockquote class="pull-right">When I first heard about Sarah Beth Woods&#39; and Fatima Traore&#39;s collaboration across culturally distinct but somehow resonant personal narratives of being born into lines of &ldquo;hairdresser&rdquo; and craftswomen of German-American homesteader and Malian medicine-maker heritage, I championed their union long before I saw even one piece of work. By the time I viewed their portfolio I knew that they were still in the beginning stages of what they could potentially do together. The potential for their art practices (one studio-centered and the other based in a braiding salon) to influence each other and indeed to create a cross-dialogue between artists that work in hair and those that work in fiber--is extremely exciting and is in my opinion, a primary goal for this work.</blockquote>

Hall also hopes that through supporting the partnership between Traore and Woods, she can foster further collaboration between artists who come from fine arts backgrounds with those who have not have formal artistic education. These types of collaboration initiate meaningful engagement between diverse cultural communities in Chicago, who may have similar interests but often do not find opportunities to engage with each other.

BRAID/WORK: Fatima Traore and Sarah Beth Woods

On Friday May 13, the Fashion Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago hosts their annual Fashion Show. The event usually takes place under a big tent in Millennium Park, but this year, the walk and an accompanying exhibition will be held at the Garfield Park Conservatory. While the Fashion Show features&nbsp;the work of graduating seniors, the new exhibition component showcases 230 designs from nearly 100 sophomore, junior and senior students with the conservatory.&nbsp;The Fashion Show is an invite-only event but the exhibition will be open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm. This is a great opportunity to see the work of these dedicated students, many of whom go on to successful careers within the fashion industry.&nbsp;

From Flora to Fashion: SAIC at the Garfield Park Conservatory

Each summer the&nbsp;Associate Board of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago hosts an event and exhibition to benefit its renowned art therapy program. This year,&nbsp;the 14th Annual Art in Motion opening celebration will take place on Thursday, May 5 from 5:30-9pm at Northwestern University&#39;s Lurie Center, Ryan Family Atrium at 303 East Superior (60611) in Streeterville.&nbsp;

Art in Motion&nbsp;is an important fundraiser and unique art exhibition hosted by the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago&rsquo;s Associate Board that brings the thriving art community and philanthropy community of Chicago together to support the very important cause of art therapy. James Rondeau, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Art Institute of Chicago (at the time he did the jurying)&nbsp;designates the most outstanding works submitted by hundreds of artists from around the country. This festive evening&nbsp;embodies the generosity of both professional &amp; patient artists who donate artwork sales proceeds to the RIC Art Therapy program.

RIC&rsquo;s Art Therapy program is funded solely through philanthropic support, and is one of the key elements that make RIC the #1 rehabilitation hospital in the world. In addition to traditional physical, speech, and occupational therapy, art therapy is an integral part of a patient&rsquo;s care at RIC. Art Therapy not only allows patients to relearn motor skills and coordination, but also helps them express the emotions they feel as they adjust to a new, challenging way of life. Some patients even discover previously untapped artistic talent, which they often continue to enjoy for the rest of their lives after they leave RIC.

Here is one moving story about an artist and RIC patient.&nbsp;Antonio Davis&rsquo; passion has always been art. He loved drawing and painting ever since he was young and studied graphic design in high school.

In 1994, he sustained a gunshot wound to the chest that left&nbsp;him a&nbsp;quadriplegic.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Now, Antonio&rsquo;s paintings have received worldwide recognition and the MFPA has reproduced many of his paintings. Through art he has found a purpose.&nbsp;During his rehabilitation at RIC he was first introduced to mouth painting. Antonio&#39;s work will be on view at Art in Motion.&nbsp;

An evening of art and music to benefit RIC Art Therapy

May 5 is Art in Motion to Benefit RIC Art Therapy

We love a good antiques show, and last month the&nbsp;Antiques, Garden &amp; Design Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden in suburban Glencoe offered a festive preview party, a wealth of design and art,&nbsp;and a welcome start to spring. &nbsp;The show has been taking place each spring for over a decade and a half now, at a time when there is no other&nbsp;antiques show taking place in the city. This show brings truth to the adage &quot;what&#39;s old is new&quot; as it makes the case for incorporating a dynamic mix of objects into a real life home environment, both indoors and out. Wandering the show floor and perusing the many beautiful&nbsp;booths, and chatting up expert dealers, makes the case that one doesn&#39;t have to fill a home with standard issue pieces&nbsp;from a big box store. Instead, examples about of how a&nbsp;unique piece of furniture with a history behind it,&nbsp;or a small decorative item can&nbsp;lend much needed life to&nbsp;a room at a time when so much out there seems the same.&nbsp;

At the preview night on April 14, over 650 party goers&nbsp;raised more than $200,000. Celebrating its 16th&nbsp;year, the Show inspires stylish living and presents beautiful gardens and objects together in a new way, making antiques fresh and appropriately vibrant. Held on the early spring grounds of the Chicago Botanic Garden, one of the most visited botanic gardens in the United States, the Antiques, Garden &amp; Design Show is the &ldquo;ribbon cutting&rdquo; to spring, inspiring attendees to brighten up their homes and gardens.

More than 90 exhibitors of&nbsp;antiques, garden antiques,&nbsp;midcentury modern pieces, and art and design from around the United States and Europe created incredible tableaus in their booths for guests to shop. Martyn Lawrence Bullard was keynote speaker and honorary co-chair. Other featured speakers, Timothy Whealon, Mario Nievera and Jeff Ross, also attended the preview evening and delighted attendees during the weekend.&nbsp;

Proceeds from the Show benefited the Chicago Botanic Garden&rsquo;s conservation, education and research programs.

Also on view at the Garden was Laurie Tennent&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2016/4/the-artistic-intimacy-of-flowers">Botanicals: Intimate Portraits</a>, which continues&nbsp;through September 25.

Antiques are New at Antiques, Garden & Design Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden

To anyone with at least a basic knowledge of European art history, the works of Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck will be familiar; they may also strike one as traditional in style. Most of us do not know just how radical and definitive van Dyck&rsquo;s artistic visions were at the time. Today many blue chip portraits on the contemporary market have roots in 17th century Europe, thanks in large part to Van Dyck&rsquo;s depictions, which influenced his contemporaries as well as future generations.&nbsp;

An exhibition on view at the Art Institute of Chicago, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, and the Portrait Print, offers an opportunity to learn about the work of this artist and his significant role in the history of fine art portraiture.&nbsp;

Known primarily as a painter, Van Dyck also worked in etching and printmaking. In the last decade of his life the artist personally produced 15 etchings that would become part of a more than 100-piece key portrait series known as the Iconography. These etchings, some of which boldly depict artists in the same manner as, and even alongside, top members of the court and society, are on view for the first time in nearly 90 years. Together with works by various artists from the 16th through the 20th century, they help explain Van Dyck&rsquo;s lasting influence on the evolution of the portrait print and its significance as a distinct genre. It was Van Dyck&rsquo;s novel manner of faithfully depicting faces and their unique features and expressions that led to portraits as we know them today.&nbsp;

Visitors to the show are presented with approximately 140 works spanning five centuries. Featured are artists who preceded Van Dyck, such as Albrecht D&uuml;rer, as well those who followed soon after&mdash;Rembrandt van Rijn&mdash;and then centuries later, from Francisco de Goya, Edgar Degas, and K&auml;the Kollwitz to Chuck Close.&nbsp;

Anthony Van Dyke: Radical Portrait Artist

In a 2012 interview with curator Dieter Roelstraete, Kerry James Marshall recalled that his kindergarten teacher rewarded well-behaved students with the opportunity to look through her scrapbook full of photos, cartoons, and cards. Marshall noted that decades later he had amassed his own archive of thousands of images, which continue to inspire his paintings, collage and photography.

The interview was published in a catalogue accompanying Marshall&rsquo;s exhibition Painting and Other Stuff, which toured four European institutions. Four years later, Marshall is sharing his impressive oeuvre, spanning 35 years, with American audiences. The retrospective, Kerry James Marshall: Mastry, now on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA), will travel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.&nbsp;

Mastry, which focuses primarily on painting, reaches back to Marshall&rsquo;s beginnings as a recent graduate from the Otis Institute of Art in Los Angeles. There he began exploring issues of identity and visibility as black male artist. Marshall grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and moved to Los Angeles in 1963, just before the Watts riots. An avid drawer as a child, Marshall was encouraged to attend the Otis Institute by a high school teacher, who introduced him to his future mentor and close friend, social-realist painter Charles White.&nbsp;

Marshall, a devoted technical master in his own right, confronts the Western art historical canon with large-scale portraits, landscapes and interiors that depict the complex vibrancy of black middle-class life. Using both narratives from African American history and his deep understanding of the history of art, Marshall questions aspirations of the middle-class and complicates aesthetic and social interpretations of blackness. The exhibition also includes a wall installation, commissioned by the MCA, featuring characters from Marshall&rsquo;s comic Rythm Mastr.

Kerry James Marshall: Mastry at the MCA

For the first time, a trio of depictions of Vincent van Gogh&rsquo;s bedroom come together at the Art Institute of Chicago as part of exhibition examining the artist&rsquo;s exploration of home. A record number of visitors has already been coming to see the works and&nbsp;to&nbsp;experience the making of and meaning behind van Gogh&rsquo;s famous portrayals through illustrated letters, a digital bedroom reconstruction, and some of the artist&rsquo;s personal possessions and books. The exhibition shows&nbsp;36 works tracing the development of van Gogh&rsquo;s ever-changing notions of home, from his iconic Yellow House in Arles, France to an asylum in Saint-Remy to his final residence in Auvers-sur-Oise.

Van Gogh&rsquo;s Bedrooms will expose distinctive details between the paintings, but together the works reflect van Gogh&rsquo;s changing, emotional notion of home, from refuge to a creative outlet. Visitors will contemplate how they might depict their own home.

The new Van Gogh exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago

An Overnight with van Gogh

This weekend is the last opportunity to see&nbsp;Homegrown: The School of the Art Institute in the Permanent Collection&nbsp;at the Art Institute of Chicago. In honor of SAIC&#39;s 150th anniversary, the Print &amp; Drawings Department curated a selection of works by alumni of the art and design school. The prints and works on paper are organized loosely by&nbsp;themes such as the Monster Roster,&nbsp;Chicago Imagists and the&nbsp;Hairy-Who and includes many recognizable names such as Sanford Biggers, Claes Oldenburg, Nancy Spero,&nbsp;Judy Legerwood, and Ed Pashke (Jerry Saltz even makes an appearance). The exhibition also&nbsp;delves deep into&nbsp;the early twentieth century to much success.

German &eacute;migr&eacute;&nbsp;Gustave Baumann&#39;s woodblock prints are a delight. Of note is <a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/96248?search_no=20&amp;index=8">Apple Blossoms</a>, which is accompanied by seven carved&nbsp;woodblocks, illustrating the layers of color needed to achieve the impressive effect in the final print. Todros Geller&#39;s series of <a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork-search/results/yiddish+motifs?filters=object_type_s%3APrint+artist_name_s%3A%22Geller%2C+Todros%22">Yiddish Motifs</a>&nbsp;are also impressive. The artist was working about a decade after Baumann, and in this series&nbsp;he layers woodcuts on Japanese wood veneer paper. Geller&#39;s depictions of working class life&nbsp;centered around Maxwell Street in Chicago contrasts his choice of a&nbsp;decorative Japanese paper.

Homegrown&nbsp;makes a point to focus&nbsp;on Regionalism as it was expressed in Chicago in the thirties and forties. Many of these prints were commissioned by the Works Progress Adminsitration, which reiterates the importance of the organization in the development of modern art in the United States. Adrian Troy&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/40237?search_no=22&amp;index=1">The Produce Market </a>and Bernece Berkman&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/127212?search_no=23&amp;index=0">Gobbers, Git a Bag!!!</a> pulse&nbsp;with life and tune viewers into a vibrant city despite the setbacks of the Depression.&nbsp;

Margaret Burroughs&#39; linocut print&nbsp;<a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/204625">Family</a>&nbsp;depicts a striking portrait of a couple.&nbsp;Burroughs first began involved at SAIC in the 1930s and eventually earned a masters in arts education from the school. She had a profound influence on the arts in Chicago; she was a dedicated arts activist as&nbsp;one of the founding artists of the South Side Community Arts Center in 1938. Decades later, in 1961,&nbsp;she cofounded, along with her husband, the DuSable Museum of African American History.&nbsp;
