Superior St. by the end of this year. He is holding a private closing event in celebration of 30 years this month. The gallery's program, unique in Chicago, has been dedicated to introducing contemporary works by Asian artists, primarily with ties to Korea and Japan. Bae represented established as well as emerging artists, from Young June Lew, to Dr. <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2018/2/artist-dr-keysook-geum-at-olympics-opening-ceremony">Keysook Geum,</a> to recent SAIC graduate <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2018/7/artist-insights-dabin-ahn">Dabin Ahn</a>, showcasing each for them for a lengthy period of time in order, as Bae noted, to allow viewers to&nbsp;examine and follow their&nbsp;development.Bae sent a message to friends and supporters saying, "It is a momentous time for me to make this announcement for my retirement after 30 fabulous years in Chicago River North art district. I want to thank all of you for it would not be possible without your confidence and support."Bae came to America from Korea when he was 23 years old, with a Bachelor’s degree in science, and he worked as an analytical research chemist at Kellogg's company for seven years. Indulging a desire to travel, he left his job as a scientist and became an importer of beautiful things from around the world, and he even made furniture for a while, fascinated by its aesthetic and function. Eventually he became an art dealer and opened Andrew Bae Gallery.&nbsp;Following the closing of the gallery at the end of December, Bae says he will focus on consulting with institutions such as museums and universities. Andrew Bae Announces Retirement After 30 Years in River North

<html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418641/wehxfni2gvdqcxiocas5.gif"></figure>Via PRChicago Artists Coalition (CAC) announced today the second cycle of the&nbsp;<a href="https://news.chicagoartistscoalition.org/t/i-l-xllkkuy-dlvzir-y/">SPARK&nbsp;Grant</a>: an unrestricted award opportunity for emerging Chicago-based visual artists who identify as&nbsp;ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, Native American), an artist with acute financial need, an artist with a disability, or as a self-taught/non-formally trained artist who does not hold a degree from an art program but has made their art practice a primary vocation.CAC's commitment to Chicago’s emerging artists provides resources that alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with being a working artist today. The SPARK Grant directly addresses historical barriers that have prevented the arts in this city from reflecting its demographic -- the ethos of this program having been created through the lenses of social, racial, and economic justice. Additionally, the SPARK&nbsp;Grant recognizes that the category of “emerging artist” is not necessarily defined by age but oftentimes a consequence of encountering systemic disadvantages perpetuated by discriminatory policies, structures, and&nbsp;practices; or, by operating outside of an academic or institutional system.&nbsp;With the support of the Joyce Foundation, the SPARK&nbsp;Grant&nbsp;offers unrestricted awards of $2,000 each to recognize exceptional emerging artists working in Chicago. After last year’s inaugural cycle the grant received 186 applications for 15 awards. There will be 20 awards granted through SPARK this year.&nbsp;Caroline Older, Executive Director of&nbsp;CAC, notes, “We are excited to launch the second year of the SPARK Grant with continued and generous support from&nbsp; the Joyce Foundation and to provide much-needed, unrestricted grants to Chicago’s artists. ” &nbsp;“Expanding funding for Chicago artists was among the top priorities outlined in the city’s cultural plan. The creation of this grant&nbsp;program directly connects to that goal,” stated Tracie D. Hall, Director of the Joyce Foundation’s Culture Program. &nbsp;“We have truly visionary artists living and working in every neighborhood across the city. There is no shortage of festivity at the Art Institute of Chicago, but make sure to visit the Thorne Rooms this season, as they are once again getting their seasonal trimmings. <html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418631/ndz6yrpvkr5ldtjbg9zc.jpg"><figcaption>CPC Director Deb Lader operates a press with visitors to the shop</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;By JACQUELINE LEWIS&nbsp;The longest running, independent print shop in Chicago, hits the big 3-0 with an eventful year planned to celebrate its exciting history.A Modest BeginningThe Chicago Printmakers Collaborative (CPC) is a gallery and workshop run by artists for artists. 30 years ago CPC first opened its doors in an old, rented, 2nd story walk-up in Chicago's west-side, Ukrainian Village neighborhood. The shop was born because artist Deborah Lader, CPC's eventual director, was searching for a place to print her work in Chicago. Frustrated by a lack of suitable places, Deborah eventually decided to open her own space, and then everything fell into place.&nbsp;Deborah used money she had saved, from teaching at Indiana University Fort Wayne, to purchase a defunct print shop, previously owned by artists Bill Cass and Lee Stoops. Now with a space to fill, she began scavenging the city for needed supplies. Deborah's initial worries about her new business venture were dispelled when her beloved grandmother passed away, leaving her the exact amount of money she needed to purchase her first lithography press. Despite the personal loss, she now believed that the printmaking shop was meant to be. Deborah named that first press, bought in 1990, ‘Edith,’ after her grandmother. And with that key piece of equipment, CPC was born.With the space, supplies and press in place, Deborah hoped that if she found some lithographic stones, as well as some important – but toxic, she admits – chemicals, the artists would come. And they did.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418632/s1navutgurhyt1byfbt6.png"><figcaption>Catherine Winings prints a 4-color etching</figcaption></figure>CPC Today30 years later Chicago Printmakers Collaborative now occupies their own space in Lincoln Square, featuring natural skylights that illuminate improved equipment – and less toxic chemicals. Though they moved just four tedious, stressful and expensive blocks in 2015, Deborah says now she feels like acquiring the space was “nothing short of a miracle” and that everyone feels at home in this location.They're also able to offer more than ever. CPC currently houses an affordable print shop and hosts classes, workshops and lectures that serve the Chicago community. They feature equipment and materials to facilitate an impressive array of printmaking techniques, including lithography, etching, relief, monotype, books, and photography. Since screen printing was introduced in 1994, it has remained the shop's most popular class.CPC also hosts international, as well as many local, print exhibitions, which have included resident group shows, touring shows and visiting artist exhibitions. Exhibitions often show traditional prints as well as works that challenge the more standardized “rules” of printmaking, with the hope that highlighting a range of work can expand the boundaries of the medium.The Community &amp; RecognitionCPC teaches hundreds of students who work diligently alongside professional printmakers, many of whom have wonderful things to say. CPC student George Bodmer shared, “The class was engaging, eye-opening, and addictive. Since then I have worked in various venues, with different presses, but constantly. The class at CPC really changed my life and hooked me on etching. Somebody last year asked me how many etchings I had done, and I looked and saw that I had averaged 25 a year for the last eight years; that’s an average of one every other week. The CPC provides a supportive artistic community, and provides a real addition to the neighborhood. When I was in a serious accident and hospitalized for a month four years ago, the CPC sent me some grounded plates to draw on, which really cheered me up.&nbsp;For the last several years I have exhibited almost continuously. CPC started the ball rolling for me.”&nbsp;CPC has also collaborated with a diverse group of civic organizations and corporations, ranging from the Chicago Park District and Gallery 37, to Target, with the intent of getting young artists excited about printmaking. The shop has also participated in international exchange collaborations with similar institutions, such as the Hard Ground Printmakers Studio in Cape Town, South Africa, and Galerie la Hune-Brenner in Paris, France, to name a few.&nbsp;Colleagues who have partnered with CPC also have raving reviews regarding their experiences. Mindy Neveaux, Events Manager of the Inspiration Corporatio said, “As the Event Manager at a local non-profit that helps homeless and low-income Chicagoans get back on their feet, I am so thankful for our partnership with CPC.&nbsp; Every March we hold our biggest fundraising event, One Inspired Evening. Chicago's Longest Running, Independent Print Shop Celebrates 30 Years

The undertaking of such a far reaching, varied and ambitious program in 2018 provided $6 million in funding to the year-long event, in addition to a $1 million donation from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation and $1 million raised from smaller donors. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;The city-wide partnership of more than 40 cultural organizations gathered cultural powerhouses and mass creativity and collaboration under one mission: to explore Chicago’s art and design legacy through some 25 exhibitions and hundreds of public programs in order to elucidate Chicago’s rich art and design history for all and to demonstrate that art can lead the way in changing lives in the city.&nbsp;Largely viewed as a resounding success, Art Design Chicago will return in 2024. Through exhibitions, academic and public programs, and publications, the initiative will examine Chicago as a critical site for the exchange of ideas and meeting of cultures, from the past and into the present, and highlight the ways in which these dynamic confluences within the city have shaped creative innovation and civic life. Building on the success of Art Design Chicago 2018, which drew approximately 2.5 million people across its yearlong run, the 2024 edition will place additional emphasis on community outreach and audience engagement efforts, highlight the work of contemporary artists and designers, and encourage more projects that capture the narratives and contributions of immigrant and other under-represented groups. The anticipated budget for Art Design Chicago 2024 is $11 million, with the majority of funds going toward grants to institutional partners. The Terra Foundation will invest $9.5 million toward the realization of the initiative—an increase of nearly $3 million from 2018—and seek to raise the rest through philanthropic partnerships. Art Design Chicago 2024 will kick off in May 2024 and run for approximately eight months. “We are delighted to announce that Art Design Chicago will return in 2024. When we first launched the initiative, we envisioned it as a beginning—a first step in rediscovering, and in some cases discovering for the first time, the depth of Chicago’s artistic legacy and its dynamic position as an incubator for innovation in American art and design. We have been inspired by the passion and enthusiasm for Art Design Chicago, from both our cultural partners and our wider audiences. We look forward to once again collaborating with Chicago’s cultural communities to create fresh and exciting experiences for the public, and to further expanding knowledge about Chicago’s history, its diverse communities, and its contemporary culture,” said Elizabeth Glassman, President &amp; CEO of the Terra Foundation for American Art.&nbsp; New scholarship is an essential aspect of Art Design Chicago, and the 2018 edition enhanced awareness of and presented the work of a wide range of cultural figures, including Ralph Arnold, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Jesus Torres, Bill Walker, and Ray Yoshida, &nbsp;as well as groups such as AfriCOBRA, the Hairy Who, and the artists and designers affiliated with the New Bauhaus, among others. For 2024, the Terra Foundation is again offering exhibition research-and-development grants—and will make them available to more organizations—which provide cultural partners with the financial support to examine underexplored topics, collections, and archives; connect with other specialists; and hire fellows to support research into content that is rich in historic context and relevant to contemporary experience. These grants, which range in scale from approximately $25,000 to $75,000, offer an avenue for curators and organizational leadership to undertake expansive research projects that might otherwise be out of financial reach. First-round grants will be awarded in summer 2020 and second and third rounds in fall 2020 and spring 2021, respectively, following inquiry and proposal processes. Organizations will also have the opportunity to apply for larger exhibition-implementation grants in 2022 to bring their research to bear in new exhibitions. For Art Design Chicago 2024, the Terra Foundation is also offering separate research-and-development grants for audience- and community-engagement efforts related to exhibitions within the initiative. The addition of these grants is a direct acknowledgement that establishing well-rooted and forward-looking connections with communities and the public takes both time and sustained commitment. Organizations can use these funds toward exploring new strategies for interpretation and programming as well as for developing partnerships with other cultural organizations or community-based groups. Along with these grants, the Terra Foundation will support a learning-community focused on engagement (to commence in 2021), which will provide opportunities for partners to convene, collaborate, and cross-pollinate project concepts. These audience-engagement research-and-development grants will be awarded in fall 2021, following inquiry and proposal processes. "Art Design Chicago was first established through a robust series of listening sessions, which allowed us to create a platform that spoke directly to the needs and interests of cultural partners, who had been seeking new opportunities to investigate Chicago as a place rich in artistic heritage and to deepen relationships across the city’s many neighborhoods and cultural enclaves. Plans for Art Design Chicago 2024 are informed by feedback from partners and advisors, ensuring that we remain responsive and engaged as the initiative evolves,” said Jennifer Siegenthaler, Program Director for Education Grants and Initiatives at the Terra Foundation for American Art. Art Design Chicago 2018 marked the most expansive exploration to-date of Chicago’s essential role as an innovator and incubator of visual art and design in the US. In 2018, 95 partner institutions presented 46 exhibitions, 36 scholarly convenings, and more than 300 public programs, drawing a total audience of approximately 2.5 million. Partners additionally developed 29 publications and 15 new digital resources. Each floor twists around large golden shoots (Starbucks’ tallest steel casks) that blend sculpture with function. Hyde Park Art Center is Turning 80!

Lightfoot announced today that the <a href="https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/mayor/press_room/press_releases/2019/november/FundingCulturalGrants.html">City of Chicago</a> will increase funding for cultural grants by $1 million, fulfilling a commitment to prioritize equitable grantmaking and microfinancing to individual artists, organizations and arts corridors throughout Chicago — particularly in communities of need. This new investment increases the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) Cultural Grants Program budget by 59% from $1.7 million to $2.7 million. At least $500,000 will be restricted for projects taking place on the South and West sides, and in wards that have traditionally been least served by the Program.“The arts are powerful. Now more than ever, it is essential that we lift up and invest in our unparalleled Chicago artists,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “A robust Chicago arts community inspires us, engages us, questions the status quo and has the power to bring our diverse city together in conversation around the critical challenges of our day.”DCASE is primarily funded by the Special Events and Hotel Tax Fund and revenues from this tax are used to support the promotion of cultural activities. There are no Corporate Fund dollars being used for this increase.This year’s budget proposes the following:<ul><li>$300,000 in increased funding for the former Microgrant Program, which will be re-named the Neighborhood Access Program and offer grants up to $50,000 for arts projects that are increasing diversity, access and inclusion in under-resourced neighborhoods. This program will be open to individuals and all types of nonprofit organizations.</li><li>$110,000 for additional grants distributed through the existing Individual Artists Program for projects in alignment with DCASE’s “Year of” themes and for new “Esteemed Artist Awards,” which will range in size from $10,000 – $15,000 and can be applied to any expenses associated with an artist’s practice.</li><li>$140,000 in increased general operating support for arts and cultural organizations (which has grown by 58% over the past three years), distributed through the existing CityArts Program.</li><li>$350,000 for additional sector-building project grants in alignment with DCASE’s “Year of” themes — also distributed through the CityArts Program.</li></ul>Additionally, a $100,000 increase will be allocated to arts education and to covering production costs for DCASE’s ArtsSpace public programming grantees. “Today marks an exciting time for the City as we celebrate our vibrant cultural community and begin the work to further improve access to the arts in every neighborhood throughout Chicago,” said DCASE Commissioner Mark Kelly. “Mayor Lightfoot’s increased funding will ensure that more local artists have an opportunity to develop their talents and skills and share them with the world.” “There is no question that the arts are vital to a neighborhood’s spirit and the quality of life for our residents,” said Ald. Sector-building project grants may fund research, audience development, professional development and training — and/or partnerships and programs that could serve as replicable models for the industry.<ul><li>General operating grants range from $2,000 – $25,000; ~150 grants per year.</li><li>Project grants range from $5,000 – $50,000; 5–25 grants per year.</li><li>The application will open in January 2020 with a deadline in February 2020.</li></ul>Neighborhood Access ProgramThis new grant program will support arts projects highlighting diversity, access and inclusion taking place in South and West Side neighborhoods and in under-served wards. Funding will extend to social services and community organizations including SSAs and chambers of commerce, libraries, parks, transit and family services agencies; religious institutions providing significant services that are non-religious in nature, and individual artists working in partnership with an organization or fiscal sponsor.<ul><li>Grants will range from $5,000 – $50,000; 10–40 grants per year.</li><li>More information about this program will be available in February 2020. Pending approval by City Council, DCASE will incorporate the $1 million increase into the Cultural Grants Program budget and work with Aldermen to make their constituents aware of upcoming grant opportunities and deadlines. As the 2019 awardee, Soto will receive an unrestricted $10,000 grant and studio visits with each of the inaugural jurors. This combination of financial support and personal engagement reflects Foundwork's goal to be a resource and facilitate professional development for artists.<a href="https://foundwork.art/artist-prize">Foundwork</a> is a platform designed to help connect artists and collaborators across the art community. The project was informed by Adam Yokell’s experience running Hometown, a gallery in Brooklyn where he worked primarily with emerging artists. Seeing the limitations that artists, curators, and gallerists often face trying to reach one another, he decided to develop Foundwork as a tool to support access across this group.Born in Puerto Rico and based in Chicago, artist Edra Soto creates conceptually rich installations and audience-responsive projects that explore the ways in which identity is expressed, and shaped, by the objects of daily life. Soto's work is rooted in a deep commitment both to community building and to a continuous, almost meditative observation of social patterns. Whether re-situating urban architecture from San Juan, inviting museum-goers to decorate liquor bottles gathered on the streets of Chicago, or welcoming neighbors to play dominos in a Harlem gallery, Soto's work embodies a sort of poetic sociology that leaves a lasting impression on those who are fortunate to experience it.Soto has exhibited widely at venues including the Pérez Art Museum, Miami, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, San Juan, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where she was invited to inaugurate the MCA’s new space for civically-engaged art, the Commons, in 2018. Soto also recently completed a commissioned public project, Screenhouse, for a two-year exhibition in Chicago’s Millennium Park. She received her MFA in 2000 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has attended residencies including Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Headlands Center for the Arts, and Art OMI, among others. Edra Soto Awarded Inaugural Foundwork Artist Prize

Stratton as the 110-year-old organization’s next&nbsp;Executive Director. Stratton is currently Interim Senior Curator-at-Large for the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Core Faculty for the MA in Critical Craft Studies at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina, as well as an independent curator, working closely with the Poor Farm in Little Wolf, Wisconsin. She will join Ox-Bow full-time on February 3, 2020.&nbsp;“We are thrilled to have Shannon Stratton as our new Executive Director,” said Board Chair Steven Meier. “Her broad experience, national&nbsp;reputation in the arts community, and forward-thinking orientation to partnerships will be essential in moving Ox-Bow into our next century, growing our regional and national relationships and developing new platforms for intergenerational learning, discovery, and critical conversation.”Stratton comes to Ox-Bow with experience as an educator, chief curator, and seasoned arts administrator, including 12 years as Director of Chicago’s Threewalls, a nonprofit arts organization she co-founded in 2003. Speaking to her appointment, she said, “I have deep respect for Ox-Bow as a place that convenes artists at all career levels to learn from and with each other. Ox-Bow reserves time and space for creative experimentation, collaboration, and innovative pedagogy in a way no other program does.” She noted its strategic partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), which has long connected Ox-Bow to an extraordinary slate of artists.&nbsp;As an alumna and former faculty member of both Ox-Bow and SAIC, Stratton is uniquely positioned to foster Ox-Bow’s approach to the creative process. “My time at Ox-Bow has had a lasting impact on my practice as an arts administrator, educator, curator, and thinker,” she said. “I look forward to leading one of the country’s most extraordinary artists’ residencies and schools, and continuing Ox-Bow’s legacy as a sanctuary for artistic practice and thought.”&nbsp;Elissa Tenny, Ox-Bow board member and SAIC President, said, “Shannon is a visionary, making spaces for artist-centric practice in galleries, museums, classrooms, and beyond for nearly two decades. I know that she will bring a depth of art education know-how to her executive leadership of Ox-Bow.”&nbsp;Stratton most recently served as Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Chief Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), in Manhattan, where she spearheaded four seasons of programming, launched the Burke Prize for artists working in craft media, and curated a number of significant exhibitions, including&nbsp;Tanya Aguiñiga: Craft and Care; Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound; and the recent&nbsp;Roger Brown: Virtual Still Lifes. She collaborated with guest curators and organizations to produce notable shows such as&nbsp;Derrick Adams: Sanctuary&nbsp;(curated by Dexter Wimberly) and&nbsp;Ebony G. Patterson: Dead Treez&nbsp;(curated by Karen Patterson for the John Michael Kohler Arts Center). Much of Stratton’s leadership focused on activating interstitial spaces at the museum and re-examining the collection, including authoring a new five-year acquisitions plan committed to strengthening the representation of POC and LGBTQI artists.Prior to joining MAD, Stratton’s service at Threewalls (2003–2015) included launching the publication&nbsp;PHONEBOOK, a guide to artist-run, independent, and grassroots arts organizations in the United States; co-organizing the first Hand-in-Glove Conference, which gave birth to the national arts organization Common Field; and co-founding the Propeller Fund, administered by Threewalls and Gallery 400 at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which has provided funding to artist-run and organized public initiatives since 2010.As a curator, Stratton has worked with hundreds of artists, including Theaster Gates, Sheila Pepe, Cauleen Smith, and Indira Allegra, through exhibitions and programs at institutions of all scales. The Silver Camera Award honors those who have made significant contributions to the medium of photography. Chicago-based Kenneth Josephson (American, b. 1932) is considered a pioneer of conceptual photography. His career was launched at the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, where he studied under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. Josephson was later a professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1960 to 1997, and a founding member of the Society for Photographic Education. He was the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship (1972) and two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships (1975 and 1979). His work is in the MoCP permanent collection as well as the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; Bibliotéque National, Paris; and Fotograficka Maseet, Stockholm. The prior installation, known as ‘The Happy Garage’ has its own Instagram following (<a href="https://www.instagram.com/thehappygarage/">#thehappygarage</a>) and had suffered some vandalism and was showing some wear, so we were interested in getting a refresh, but Chris had a bigger project in mind. Because the side of the garage is corrugated, he proposed preparing a dozen 4’ x 8’ panels with his mural, which would then be affixed to the garage. He began work on the piece (at least the painting part) in early June 2018, and it was completed at the end of the month. The Art History Babes platform, presented by Corrie Hendricks, Natalie De La Torre, Virginia Van Dine, &amp; Jennifer Gutierrez, is a space for open-minded, unabashed discussion of art, visual culture, and creativity. Since its launch in 2016, Female Design Council has been dedicated to bringing together women in design and art to foster dialogue and spur action on the difficult issues facing women in a predominantly male industry as well as broadening awareness of exceptional, contemporary design and art made by women.&nbsp;Intricate: Complexity &amp; Beauty Sewn Up, a powerful group exhibition featuring 7 dynamic female textile artists weaving pathways to pertinent conversations through the exciting medium of fiber arts. These unique, collectible works highlight issues surrounding the view and function of the female body, the need for self-preservation, social impositions, sustainable materials, the appreciation of handmade imperfections, and a consistent vulnerability of being female. This body of work serves to capture and release a visual and meaningful conversation around the universal female experience using the lens of textiles to tell the story.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721418625/uvvdyuzeingflunvcpc2.jpg"><figcaption>Detail from "Savage Liaisons"</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;• Savage Liaisons is an exhibition that is the result of an ongoing artistic collaboration between two artists who, through experimentation in sculptural mosaics, have developed a visual partnership in their respective studios 9,670 miles apart. This show explores aspects of identity through the artists’ processes of utilizing their shared language of storytelling through interpretations of masks and facades in both classical and unexpected mosaic materials.In Savage Liaisons, artists Karen Ami (Chicago, USA) and Pamela Irving (Melbourne, Australia) expand upon their individual practices and ongoing visual discourse manifested in their mosaics and drawings. Pulling inspiration from roles of characters in both American and Australian cultures, the artists explore dualistic qualities in the form of masks that reference contemporary icons and personalities. Ami and Irving each incorporate materials which challenge the norm; their methodology questions the traditions that exist within contemporary mosaic. This unique and shared language incorporates handmade ceramic pieces, broken china, byzantine glass, and miscellaneous objects that connects us viscerally to both the past and present worlds.&nbsp; Ami and Irving have the same veins of material training and education in art history, ceramics, sculpture and mosaics. The two met over a decade ago while leading their newly formed Mosaic Arts organizations in their respective countries. Both artists have become outliers and influencers in the modern mosaic movement.
