MAHOGANY GALLERY AND RACINE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TEAM UP AGAIN FOR THE 2ND ANNUAL MLK ART & ESSAY CONTEST. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WAS AN ACTIVIST AND LEADER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. THE 2021-2022 DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ESSAY AND ART CONTEST INVITES STUDENTS TO REFLECT ON THE LIFE, LESSONS, AND WORDS OF THIS POWERFUL LEADER.

CONTEST PARTICIPANTS ARE INVITED TO CREATE AN ESSAY OR PIECE OF ARTWORK THAT RESPONDS TO DR. KING’S STATEMENT AND/OR IS REFLECTIVE OF HIS LIFE’S WORK. TEACHERS AND PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO HELP STUDENTS GAIN HISTORICAL CONTEXT FOR DR. KING’S WORDS AND IDEAS USING BOOKS, ARTICLES, VIDEOS, AND OTHER RESOURCES. 

ELIGIBILITY
THE DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WRITING AND ART CONTEST IS OPEN TO ANY STUDENT IN THE RACINE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. ESSAY CONTEST GUIDELINES THERE WILL BE UP TO TWO (2) WINNERS IN EACH CATEGORY FOR EACH GRADE LEVEL BAND. INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. KINDERGARTEN-1ST GRADE: MAXIMUM LENGTH 250 WORDS 2ND AND 3RD GRADE: MAXIMUM LENGTH 250 WORDS 4TH AND 5TH GRADE: MAXIMUM LENGTH 350 WORDS 6TH THROUGH 8TH GRADE: MAXIMUM LENGTH 500 WORDS 9TH THROUGH 12TH GRADE: MAXIMUM LENGTH 500 WORDS

ART CONTEST GUIDELINES 
THERE WILL BE UP TO TWO (2) WINNERS IN EACH CATEGORY FOR EACH GRADE LEVEL BAND. ALL ART FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED INCLUDING: DRAWING, PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING, POETRY, SCULPTURE, SPOKEN WORD, VIDEOGRAPHY, AND MORE. INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. DEADLINE & SUBMISSION 

PARENTS AND TEACHERS SHOULD HELP STUDENTS SCAN OR TAKE PHOTOS OF THEIR WORK FOR ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION. WINNERS & RECOGNITION SUBMISSIONS WILL BE EVALUATED ON COMPONENTS SUCH AS THEME AND ORIGINALITY. CONTEST WINNERS WILL BE RECOGNIZED AT MAHOGANY ART GALLERY ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 14TH AT 2:00PM.
