Heritage Museum of Asian Art is the only museum in the Midwest exclusively dedicated to Asian art. Located in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood, the museum preserves and promotes the diverse traditions of Asian art through exhibitions, collections, and public programs that connect historical works with contemporary artists, communities, and cultural practices. With a collection spanning from 4000 BCE through the nineteenth century, the museum is especially known for its Chinese and Japanese classical art. Through rotating exhibitions, artist talks, performances, workshops, and educational programs, HMAA creates opportunities for visitors to encounter Asian art as a living and evolving tradition. HMAA is committed to preserving the stories and legacies of community artists, particularly those whose contributions to Chicago’s cultural life have been overlooked. Through oral histories, archival preservation, research, and exhibitions, the museum works with artists, families, and community partners to make these histories accessible to future generations. You will learn about the history and regional styles of this colorful art form, and create one Kurpie-style cutting and one Łowićz-style cutting in this 2-hour workshop. With just paper and scissors, you'll be amazed at the vibrant beauty you can create. No experience is necessary—just bring your creativity! This workshop is part of the Cutting East to West exhibition. Presented in collaboration with members of the Guild of American Papercutters (GAP), Cutting East to West invites visitors to discover the precision, imagination, and cultural stories held within a single sheet of paper.
