Artists in this exhibition blur the lines between representational and abstract approaches. They are open to seeing beyond the horizon, and are keenly aware of subtle shifts in color temperature, mood and atmosphere. Like the weather, the work conveys a variety of moods, which ranges from tranquil and calm to stormy. This exhibition addresses the fragile relationship humans have with water, our most precious natural resource. On Friday, August 1st, we will be having an exhibit opening for newly represented and featured artist Mary Burke's show "Organic Geometry." The opening will run from 5-7 PM and will display Mary's abstract landscape paintings, which are influenced by the woods surrounding her studio,&nbsp;as well as the relationship between seemingly dichotomous forms. We are excited to announce the return of our beloved open call exhibition now in its third year,&nbsp;Perennial Hug 3 Chicago and Vicinity!Perennial Hug&nbsp;is an annually occurring open call and guest juried exhibition that will feature&nbsp;artists of all demographics, and abilities. Through the deployment of various formal and material strategies the work selected for&nbsp;Perennial Hug&nbsp;functions as an assembly of outstretched arms awaiting the warm embrace of the viewer.

Domestic in A Foreign Sense&nbsp;is a solo exhibition by José Lerma featuring large-scale portraiture created in thick impasto and limited brush strokes. The title of the exhibition is a transposition of the phrase “foreign in a domestic sense,” which is how US Supreme Court Justice Henry Brown described Puerto Rico in his 1901 decision that placed the island as neither fully part of the United States nor an independent country. This contradictory statement led to years of uncertainty for Puerto Rico. This paradoxical nature is apparent in the artist’s paintings, which feature copious amounts of paint but few brushstrokes, challenging viewers’ expectations of both painting and portraiture. His work uniquely collapses historical and autobiographical elements, creating pieces that are part art history and part personal mythology. With a career spanning over two decades, Lerma’s return to the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is particularly significant, as it was here that he had his first museum exhibition in the 1999 Wisconsin Triennial after earning his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. José Lerma (b. 1971, Spain; lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico) received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2002. He has had over twenty solo exhibitions at galleries such as Kavi Gupta in Chicago, IL, Galerie Xavier Hufkens in Brussels, Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York, NY, and at museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. His works are represented in numerous collections, including the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Saatchi Collection in London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was awarded the Dean Alan Olson Purchase Award for the Rockford Art Museum permanent collection in 2020 and was Awarded Best in Show at the 2021 Evanston and Vicinity Exhibition. An exhibition of her work about animal extinction was held at The Buffalo Museum of Science, and a solo exhibition of her work held at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg, PA, in 2022-2023. Several of her artworks are in the collection of Artemezia Foundation Museum in Bisbee, Arizona. She also received fellowship awards from The Illinois Arts Council and from the Colorado Council on the Arts and Humanities. Her large-scale public sculpture “Shoe of Shoes” is in the collection of Caleres Shoes in St. Louis. Her sculptures have been commissioned by Sound Transit in Seattle, and Comed in Chicago. In 2016 she was featured in Sculpture Magazine’s May issue, as part of the show “Disruption” at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Her most recent large-scale public sculpture, titled “Canoe Fan,” is owned by the city of Ann Arbor installed along the Huron River in Gallop Park. Spencer Gale&nbsp;is a neon bender and sculptor working in Chicago and southwestern Colorado. He received his BFA from the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago in 2023. He is an interdisciplinary artist examining the relationship between found object sculpture and light through neon. As a neon bender, he endeavors to always push his skills and explore the many visual phenomena in this esoteric art form. Chicago artist&nbsp;Deborah Newmark, earned a BA and a BFA from the University of Illinois. Continuing education includes studies in drawing, painting, and printmaking at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Oxbow, Lillstreet Gallery, and the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative. Entangled Expressions: Exploring the Labyrinth of Linearity

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s upcoming exhibition&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=38939d4a2c&amp;e=4ba592fe2a" target="_blank">Pipilotti Rist: Supersubjektiv</a>&nbsp;will open on February 22 and run through September 14, 2025, in the Turner Gallery on the museum’s fourth floor.This exhibition focuses on a single artwork by Pipilotti Rist (b. 1962, Grabs, Switzerland; lives in Zürich, Switzerland), the 2001 video installation&nbsp;Supersubjektiv. In the artwork, Rist takes digital surveillance footage she filmed during a month-long trip to Japan and morphs it into a dream-like space for contemplation and curiosity, pairing the hallucinatory video with an artist-made pillow and sheepskin seating. The artwork examines nature, the built environment, and technology with wide-eyed wonder. While viewing the large-scale, wall-to-wall video, visitors are encouraged to relax in the darkened gallery and listen to its ambient electronic soundtrack, made in collaboration with composer Anders Guggisberg and featuring the familiar sounds of a dial-up internet modem as well as lyrics written and sung by Rist. Made at the turn of the millennium,&nbsp;Supersubjektiv&nbsp;traces Rist’s longing for connection in an increasingly digital and globalized world.Supersubjektiv&nbsp;is part of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift, which was jointly donated to the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Solomon R. ABOUT THE ARTISTPipilotti Rist (b. 1962, Grabs, Switzerland; lives in Zurich, Switzerland)&nbsp;used her childhood nickname, Lotti, with the first name of the Swedish children’s story character Pippi Longstocking to create her artistic moniker in 1982. She attended the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna from 1982 to 1986 and the Schule für Gestaltung Basel from 1986 to 1988. She produced her first video,&nbsp;I’m Not the Girl Who Misses Much&nbsp;(1986), while still at school in Basel. In it, she bounces up and down, falling out of her dress, as she repeatedly sings the title line (derived from the lyrics to a Beatles song). From 1988 to 1994, she played in a rock band called Les Reines Prochaines, at the same time developing an aesthetic language quite close to that of music videos in her art. The artist appears in many of her own videos and often sings on the soundtracks; her mother, brother, and three sisters frequently assist on the production. Rist has also developed installations such as&nbsp;Flying Room(1995) and&nbsp;Himalaya’s Sister’s Living Room&nbsp;(2000), in which video cameras and monitors are wittily deployed in furnished gallery spaces.Since Rist’s first solo exhibition, in 1984, she has had shows at the Kunstverein in Hamburg, Germany (1995), Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (1996), SITE Santa Fe (1998), Montréal Museum of Fine Arts (2000), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (2001), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2004), Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (2007), and Museum of Modern Art in New York (2008), among other venues. Pipilotti Rist: Supersubjektiv

The Wisconsin Triennial is a cornerstone of MMoCA’s exhibition calendar. Every three years the exhibition charts the latest art being made across the state, capturing the richness and variety of artistic expression in Wisconsin. MMoCA’s curatorial staff selected new works of art by established and emerging artists through a rigorous review process beginning with an open call for entries in late September. From the over 250 applications from artists in every corner of the state, more than 30 artists were selected for additional review through an in-person studio visit. The final selection of 24 artists represents a wide range of artistic approaches and subjects. Mac Pierce is concerned with the influence of technology on society and culture, with a special emphasis on the tendencies for technocratic overreach and surveillance to contribute to social decay and violence. His work utilizes 3D printing, coding, video, computer hardware, video game content, and carefully selected text and data, synthesized into a conceptual framework.Given contemporary national and world political trends, Pierce’s work takes on added significance as many of his conceptual approaches have shown to be relevant to the realities of recent current events. Busted: Contemporary Sculpture Busts

Though titled after the hit television show,&nbsp;White Lotus&nbsp;by Alex Katz bears very little relation to HBO’s dark comedy. Rather, the paintings in this series are guided more by the tools of cinema, through Katz's use of monumental canvas, dramatic lighting, and repeating figures.Opening at GRAY’s Chicago gallery on July 11, 2025,&nbsp;White Lotus&nbsp;is a testament not only to Katz’s nonstop creative output, but also his status as one of the most groundbreaking American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

old friends is honored to present&nbsp;Chicken Stingel: The Sequel,&nbsp;works by Kenny Schachter, and chickens Maura, Margaret, Jiji, and Henrietta. On view August 14 - September 21, 2025. Curated by Bianca Bova.&nbsp;Following&nbsp;Chicken Stingel, a performance and exhibition at the Connelly Family Project Space in London in May 2025, Old Friends presents Kenny’s Schachter’s&nbsp;Chicken Stingel: The Sequel.&nbsp;The jumping off point for&nbsp;Chicken Stingel&nbsp;is a series of Rudolf Stingel works begun in 2002, utilizing large-scale panels of Celotex Tuff-R insulation. The panels were affixed to gallery and museum walls where viewers were encouraged to graffiti them via scratching, writing, or otherwise leaving marks on the malleable surfaces. A decade later the artist readdressed the brittle pieces by casting them in electroformed copper plated in nickel and gold, preserving for posterity an archive of the public’s interactions.&nbsp;Schachter engages Stingel’s process, exchanging chickens for the public as his collaborators. For the production of the works, a group of micro-sized canvases are coated in edible adhesive, covered in feed, and placed on a wooden workspace structure Schachter has constructed within the participating chickens’ coop. The works that result from the hens’ consumption of the feed from the surfaces of the canvases are then digitally scanned, cast, and coated in silver and gold finishes.&nbsp;Chicken Stingel: The Sequel&nbsp;encompasses an exhibition of the cast works from the initial performance by Maura and Margaret (London), and will include the initiation of a second series of works with a performance by Jiji and Henrietta (Chicago). By bringing this work to completion in the American heartland, Schachter (who is himself not a stranger to farm life, having worked on one managing its chicken enclosure after graduating from high school early) brings into consideration the multifaceted nature of the animal. They are foodstuffs, undeniably, but also themselves the producers of foodstuffs; companionable collaborators; an intrinsic part of the Midwestern landscape integral to its identity and inhabitability.&nbsp;— Bianca Bova

Chicken Stingel: The Sequel

Our Biennial is one of the Midwest’s largest and most prestigious juried exhibitions, offering artists an opportunity to have their work viewed by three talented curators: Chanelle Lacy, Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie, Joe Lanasa, Director/Founder of Fulton Street Collective, and Cortney Lederer, Public Art Consultant and Educator. Our Biennial will be promoted and viewed by hundreds of visitors, including gallerists, curators, and collectors. Cash awards and cash equivalents will be presented at the artists’ reception. Awards, which may include Best of Show and Juror’s Merit categories, are given at the jurors’ discretion. From the final pool of selected applicants, the jurors will also award 3 artists, who have not exhibited at the Evanston Art Center in the past 5 years, with the opportunity to be included in an exhibition in our galleries. Chanelle Lacy is a curator, cultural producer, and Reiki Master. She is also the Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie and the fearless leader of EarlyWork! Passionate about bringing ambitious, rigorous, and challenging projects to life, Chanelle works closely with artists both emerging and established to expand not only their creative practices but the art historical canon at large. Her passion for art and her commitment to amplifying underrepresented and marginalized voices make her a true champion of the arts. Most recently she produced SKIN + MASKS, a blockbuster exhibition crafted in collaboration with musician and activist Vic Mensa, centering works by contemporary artists exploring the elusive essence of identity. Originally presented in a classic gallery setting, SKIN + MASKS traveled to Chicago’s famed Magnificent Mile for a six-month pop-up exhibition presented in partnership with EXPO Chicago and the City of Chicago. In 2021 she curated Realms of Refuge, a group exhibition focused on the alchemical processes that enable us to transcend our earthly entanglements to reach higher states of consciousness, embodiment, and expression. Chanelle forged her path in the arts working at a contemporary gallery where she lent her vision to the program for six years. During three years of her tenure, she held the position of Director. Chanelle continues to be a force, serving as a trusted advisor. Cortney Lederer is a public art consultant and educator with over twenty years of experience managing artistic programming for foundations and organizations. Cortney has curated installations by notable artists such as Jacob Hashimoto (2019) and Olafur Eliasson (2021) at th Willis Tower and Luftwerk at the landmark Chicago Board of Trade Building (2024). She served as the art advisor for E(art)H Chicago, (2023) an initiative supported by the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF), providing $700,000 in grants to artists to inspire new ways of thinking about environmental responsibility in neighborhoods across Chicago. This summer, she launched a new public art initiative for the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (2024) connecting people to nature through 30 art installations across the city. Cortney is currently serving as the public art consultant for the Chicago Park District to design and manage an RFP for artist responses to contested monuments on parkland through installations, onsite programming, and activations. She is also the Public Art Consultant for the City of Wichita, managing three, new public artworks for the Arkansas River Improvement Project. Most recently, she worked with a team of planning consultants hired by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) to develop a community-engaged, pilot cultural and historical marker program. This pilot program celebrates the city’s cultural heritage by sharing untold stories and events through artist-designed markers. Cortney is an Associate Professor, Adj., in the Arts Administration and Policy department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and serves on the board of Arts of Life and Every House Has a Door. Joe Lanasa is one of the founding members and the current director of the Fulton Street Collective. He created FSC in late 2002, along with his amazingly talented friend, Anna Fermin. Their original vision still holds true today, which is to host a community of creative, talented people, and give them the resources they need to support and cultivate their art so that they can enrich the lives of others and become part of the greater community. Joe is also a street poet, songwriter, rock musician singer, and guitarist, performing in mostly Chicago-area clubs for over ten years now. His musical influences include a crazy blend of brilliant performers, including Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Scott Momenthy, Iggy Pop, early Springsteen, Marty Robbins, Elvis, Van Morrison, and Bob Marley. 27th Evanston and Vicinity Biennial

Waters of the Abyss will open June 19, 2025,&nbsp;in the Chicago Rooms of the Chicago Cultural Center. The exhibition is free and open to the public through September 21, 2025. Through more than 15 crafted works selected from a larger body of over 50, Jean-Louis invites viewers on a spiritual and historical journey that explores Black identity, ancestral heritage, and freedom. Using innovative techniques and symbolic materials — including paper, glass, crystals, shells, and 23K gold — Jean-Louis constructs portal-like sculptures, tabernacle paintings, and relic-inspired artifacts with symbolic meaning and cultural resonance. In addition, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view nine original works by the legendary artist. Facades

The annual exhibition highlights paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics, prints, animation, and multimedia work by young artists participating in&nbsp;Hyde Park Art Center’s Teen programs. Each year, Teen programs provide a structured independence that encourages young artists to develop their creative voices, learn new skills, and build relationships in the context of a community art center, where artists of all ages and backgrounds do the same. The exhibition is a testament to these young artists’ evolution and dedication.
