It’s been a great run, but all good things do come to an end. A big thanks to everyone for your support, encouragement and friendship." Hiebert founded the much loved space with Sidney Block, who died at 91 in late 2015.• <a href="http://galeriewaterton.com">Galerie Waterton</a>, a neighbor of Printworks at 311 W Superior, closed its doors in October. Owner Francois Grossas said he plans to make a change to his gallery operation in 2019 and that he will announce new plans hopefully this year.&nbsp;• After more than three decades in Chicago, Martha Schneider of <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/organizations/schneider-gallery">Schneider Gallery</a> will continue her legacy in 2019 as a private dealer focusing on photography. The gallery has been located in River North for more than 30 years, presenting more than 150 exhibitions. Martha will continue to work with artists on special projects and is now also available for private client consultations. The River North space at 770 N LaSalle opens a final exhibition on January 11 featuring photography by Whit Forrester. Wes Cowan founded Cowan's Auctions in 1995 in Cincinnati. Both will remain intimately involved in developing the strategy and vision of Hindman LLC where Leslie Hindman will serve on the Board as Co-Chair and Wes Cowan as Vice Chair. Hindman LLC will create one of the largest auction firms in America with its combined expertise and footprint. It will be led by CEO Thomas Galbraith, who will work closely with senior leadership at both companies to oversee the collaboration.&nbsp;

In the News: Updates from the CGN Art Community Vol. 4

<html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417831/bfjdgi8ljow8iignw0lr.png"></figure>&nbsp;My son turned three not long before this publication, also now in its third year, went to print. On a daily basis the unpredictabilty of motherhood, along with running a magazine, keeps me on my toes. I’m always feeling short on time and more than a little overwhelmed. But in both cases year three seems to be pretty great. With each year there are big challenges to meet as well as small accomplishments to savor. The balancing act is worth it – for the obvious joys where my son is concerned, but for CGN I also take a parental pride in being able to develop a valuable resource that encourages people to make art a part of their life and also supports the many creatives throughout our community.This is the third edition of our annual CGN Arts Guide, and as with everything, we strive to make each version better than the one before. In 2019 we welcome 19 galleries and art spaces to these pages – a sign that we are actually sharing more art with our readers than before, even in the middle of a tumultous art climate. We work together to support small and midsize galleries, arts nonprofits and museums, independent artists and many others. So far the hopeful bright spots dispel any shadows of uncertainty. Another thing we know for sure in our third year of publishing this Guide is that, despite the inevitable challenges that keep coming, in order to keep your head above water you must keep moving. Have you ever heard of a three year old who gives up? Three year olds do not sit still. Even as the world frustrates, it beckons.This year’s guide is 164 pages (bigger than the previous two years!) and we have made our maps more comprehensive. We also updated our design to match our new website (see below). Even though we never forget where we started, with so much to discover in our world, it’s great being three. Publisher's Letter – 2019: 3rd Time's the Charm

<html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417829/rxtsij1henqzfkifsir2.jpg"></figure>By CGN StaffFollowing a busy end-of-year crammed with deadlines and to-dos, we are pleased to be getting back to sharing news and features with CGN readers as we await the arrival of our 2019 CGN Arts Guide in the coming days.&nbsp;First up is the return of the Artist Insights series, in which we ask various artists &nbsp;a set of questions about their practice as well as local favorites. We recently spoke with James Mesplé, a charming figure in the Chicago art community, who has been a regular visitor to the CGN office for years, always taking time to stop in and share his own book, film and art show recommendations with us.&nbsp;Mesplé’s vibrant work features signature imagery that links to the past through figures from history and literature. &nbsp;Mesplé studied painting at the University of Missouri, and after graduation he moved to Chicago in 1968 and eventually graduated with honors from Northeastern Illinois University in 1970. He has taught art at various Chicago institutions over the years, including Francis W. Parker School, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.&nbsp;Mesplé lives and works in Chicago. His most recent show from November 2018, Arcadia, was the final exhibition to take place at Printworks Gallery. He also shows his art at Jackson Junge Gallery in Wicker Park.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tell us a little about your hometown? &nbsp;I come from the Missouri Ozarks, from a small town called Nevada near Neosho and Joplin Missouri.&nbsp;It's in the southwest part of the state where Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas meet.&nbsp;Previous occupations?&nbsp;&nbsp;My first job was a summer job with the Chicago Tribune, which was followed by ten years of teaching art at the Francis Parker School in Lincoln Park. And then at the Studios of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I also conducted various workshops in watercolor and egg tempera at the Oxbow Artists’ Retreat in Michigan, as well as at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.&nbsp;&nbsp;Favorite spot to spend time in the city.&nbsp;&nbsp;A toss-up between the Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum&nbsp;Preferred art store.&nbsp;&nbsp;Artist and Craftsman Supply on South Wabash and Blick Art Materials on North Avenue. (I need both, since Pearl Art &amp; Craft Supplies left River North years ago.)&nbsp;Favorite Music?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I play woodwinds, so I often take a break from painting and pick up my flute to play Vivaldi, or if I want a longer break, I soak a reed and play Mozart or Beethoven on bassoon, etc.&nbsp; But while I’m working on a painting, I listen to classical music.&nbsp;In the summer, l like the free concerts at Millennium Park with the symphony or I go listen to the free string quartet at the Cultural Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;Coffee or tea?&nbsp;&nbsp;Coffee during the day, but at night, herbal tea – especially if I have detailed work to do and need control; chamomile tea is calming and makes the hand steady.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tell us a little about your training?I studied both music and art at the University of Missouri for two years (bassoon and painting).&nbsp; I transferred to Northeastern Illinois (Chicago) and finished my undergraduate degree there. I began teaching art at Francis Parker and attended SAIC at the same time, receiving a continuing education certificate while making my own art on weekends and having exhibitions of my art in theater lobbies, or wherever I could show it.&nbsp;What art has been particularly meaningful in your life?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I have done printmaking, ceramic sculpture, and even jewelry making, but my first love has always been painting.&nbsp;Trips to Europe to see the world’s great collections of paintings were something I worked hard to make happen over and over.&nbsp; It was really a continuing part of my education. A painter must see paintings to learn from them. Trips to Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and Great Britain are a must for a painter – or get to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery in Washington if you can’t go to Europe.&nbsp;&nbsp;What was the first work of art to make a lasting impression on you?&nbsp;I attended Benton Grade School in Nevada, MO.&nbsp; In the front hall of the school was a large color reproduction of Thomas Hart Benton’s painting in the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri. I passed it every day from first through sixth grade.&nbsp; My high school art class went on an all-day trip to see the Truman Library, and this is when I learned that the 36-inch color reproduction in Benton Grade School was nothing like the massive wall mural Benton had painted in the library. This was a revelation.&nbsp;Years later, at the University of Missouri, I got to meet Thomas Hart Benton and was exposed for the first time to the technique 'mixed' (which combines egg tempera and oil).&nbsp;Whenever I visit my sister, who lives in Independence, I try to visit his mural. Even after seeing many of the major art museums in Europe, the mural still fascinates me.&nbsp;Describe your studio.There are several easels, because I work on several paintings at the same time. I have a north light, a table to mix or grind pigments, a life-sized copy of Venus de Milo for inspiration, and a cabinet for my paints.&nbsp;&nbsp;How do you know when a piece is finished?&nbsp;I know it’s finished when it says to me “I’m alive.”&nbsp; If a work doesn’t sell right away, I often keep refining it, sometimes for years.&nbsp; I have also experienced seeing my sold works in someone’s home years later and I would have changed some small thing – unfortunately then it is no longer possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Any tricks for getting past a creative block?&nbsp;I’ve never had a creative block.&nbsp; If I did, I would immediately consult my sketch books, which have hundreds and hundreds of sketches with my “ideas” that I will never have enough time to develop into a painting.&nbsp; To do them all would take a dozen lifetimes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;You have three minutes in an art store to take whatever you want, what do you grab?&nbsp;I would take a tube of genuine vermilion paint or a fine sable brush (which wouldn’t work well for me, because art stores keep both items locked up!)&nbsp;&nbsp;What&nbsp;should we expect to see from you next? &nbsp;After finishing Arcadia at Printworks Gallery, which was an exhibition of small works on paper, I am looking forward to working on a new series of large paintings on canvas and panel.&nbsp;They will continue my interest in Contemporary Classics and the world of mythology.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417829/i4pmfo7gsi0bumo4nbez.jpg"><figcaption>James Mesple, Pan's Garden: The Five Senses, oil on canvas, 36 x 48 in, 2017</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417830/hwwahu0670rnwlikaj31.jpg"><figcaption>Mesple's recent exhibition, Arcadia, at Printworks Gallery in River North, November 2018</figcaption></figure></body></html>

<html><head></head><body>By SARAH ADLERWhen I hear the term “art world,” I imagine several people – unusually tall and good-looking – gathered together sipping champagne while discussing some sparkling Warhol. Or I hear the incessant clicking of impossibly tall stilettos, going one-two-three-pause-for-reflection-one-two-three across a stone-cold floor in a space adorned by “masterpieces.” Neither of these scenarios is particularly inviting. Furthermore, they are not what I actually have found art, and its related spaces, to have the potential to be: radical, engaging, and provocative. Despite loving art my entire life, I too grow hesitant upon hearing someone invoke the words “art world.”There are numerous spaces around the city that are dedicated to offering beautiful, even transcendental art experiences. In order to encourage anyone who is a bit hesitant about where to start, I have compiled a list of events that may serve as a healthy first course. This is not to say that any of these events don’t appeal to those who frequent these spaces more regularly, but rather that these events present excellent appetizers for anyone who's not yet sure if they want to stay for dinner and dessert.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417790/dvh2dcblf2lmoenxszws.gif"></figure>1. Holiday Photo Book Bazaar, Columbia College of Chicago, December 6, 5-7 PMPhotography was once deemed a “lower” art form than the great likes of painting and sculpture. However, the past century has given way to the likes of both brilliant photographers and massively influential Instagram stars alike. Since photography has become such a mainstay in our everyday technology, it could serve as an easy entranceway into the art world. Yes, the images are probably a bit more edgy than what is on your feed, but several of the artists featured in the bazaar, including Cecil McDonald Jr. and Melissa Ann Pinney, often utilize everyday subject matter. This exhibition consists of portraits of women, of all races and ethnicities, screaming at the issues they face everyday. The artist, Whitney Bradshaw, has been bringing together groups of women who don’t know each other since the Women’s March in 2018. There, the women engage in conversations surrounding all kinds of topics, such as racism, sexism, and sexual assault. This could happen in your house, maybe, or it could happen at the stately Art Institute of Chicago. Although most of the floors are dedicated to some of the greatest masters in the world – think all the names that you probably associate with art – an exhibition called Prayer invites its listeners to remove their shoes, walk along soft carpet, and listen to a symphony of different voices – all from Chicago – recite prayers in their respective religions and beliefs. New to the 'Art World'? Here Are Starting Points to Experience

Our client remembers, “My parents brought him back from their trip to Toledo, but hadn’t told us anything. I just came home from school one day and he was there!”Over the years, Carlos became part of the family. The kids dressed him up in different wigs and beads for the holidays, including a flute of champagne to celebrate the New Year. “Carlos was certainly always a conversation starter,” our client told us, laughing. “Not everyone has a suit of armor in their house!”<figure class="image"><img src="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5506f408e4b0619cc3aeac05/t/5c000ef30ebbe8ea333184ae/1543507711284/45191818825_a80ba10a48_z.jpg?format=500w" alt=" After Treatment "><figcaption>After Treatment</figcaption></figure>&nbsp;The family knew it was time for Carlos to get some work done when he started leaning from various location changes. Before moving him to his next destination- the family beach house- they decided to send Carlos to us.Carlos came to The Center in generally good condition, though his armor exhibited minor surface oxidation and subtle corrosion throughout, especially on the backs of the plates which exhibited moderate corrosion. These leather pieces were extremely dry and cracked. The leather joining the hombrera and the espaldar, or shoulder and back plate, were rotted, not functioning properly, and were possibly not even original to the armor. His skirt, made of red velvet, was in a soiled condition. Next, the armor was carefully removed from the wooden mannequin and surface cleaned using the appropriate conservation methods and materials. In this age of shop-from-your-couch from the world's mega companies, buying tickets to area museums and visiting local galleries and studios is an important way to support our vital, creative neighbors who do something independent every day of the year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417729/xlgbeolz1aeiynudrxav.png"><figcaption>Art and Faith of the Creche at LUMA</figcaption></figure>Seasonal Art for the HolidaysThis winter, the Loyola University Museum of Art will showcase two exhibitions that are festive reasons to visit this small museum in the heart of downtown.&nbsp;Art and Faith of the Crèche: The Collection of James and Emilia Govan is a perennial favorite. Each year LUMA shares how artists across the globe depict the nativity with clothes, architecture, and figures from their native lands.Chicago artist David Lee Csicsko will be featured in The Art of the Season: David Lee Csicsko. In addition to showcasing 20 new color prints, a selection of Csicsko’s black and white series&nbsp;Saints in the Garden&nbsp;(1990- 1997) will be on view.On Friday, November 30 there is a free, public reception for both shows, 5:30-7:30pm. On Tuesday, December 4 Csicsko will give a talk from 6-7pm at the museum where he will discuss the inspiration, motivation, and process for creating his prints. Among the most elaborate is the English Drawing Room of the Victorian Period, the only room with a Christmas tree. Now a ubiquitous feature of the season, the Christmas tree, or&nbsp;tannenbaum, was only brought to England from Germany in 1840 with the marriage of Prince Albert to Queen Victoria. <html><head></head><body>By FRANCK MERCURIOThe Chicago Cultural Center’s trio of galleries—known as the Chicago Rooms—presents a special challenge for any curator or artist. Works of art can easily&nbsp; “get lost” in these super-tall spaces with their classical proportions and stunning views of Millennium Park. But three artists—Jeff Carter, Faheem Majeed, and Susan Giles—successfully answered the call by curators Greg Lunceford and Lisa McKean to create “an exhibition whose demands exceed the sizeable ones made by the architectural space.” In this adventure Carter, Majeed, and Giles have created works that not only stand on their own inside these three galleries, but also explore different formal and social aspects of the built environment.<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417740/swtqprfratd7wkhtcuzj.gif"><figcaption>Susan Giles</figcaption></figure><h3>Susan Giles</h3>This reviewer first became acquainted with the work of Susan Giles when she was creating small-scale sculptures inspired by architectural icons, including the Arc de Triomphe, Tower Bridge, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Blue Mosque, among others. She crafted these works from an unlikely duo of materials: paper and concrete. The contrast between the lightweight architectural models (paper) and the weighted, gray bases on which they sat (concrete) captured the “groundedness” of architecture while simultaneously expressing its vulnerability.Giles’ most recent works continue to be inspired by the built environment, but her forms are less literally architectural. The artist has been observing and videotaping people as they describe the spaces around them—as much with their hands as with their words. She then makes 3D constructions based on her subjects’ fluid arm and hand gestures.The most monumental of these gestural works is currently installed inside one of the Chicago Cultural Center’s Chicago Rooms. Titled In the Center There Were Librarians, this intricately layered cardboard construction hovers above the spot where a large, round, reference desk once stood when the Cultural Center served as the city’s main public library.Giles interviewed retired librarian Carolyn Mulac who remembered the original set-up. “[Carolyn] was telling me about this desk,” recalled Giles “and she said ‘It went around like this [using hand gestures] and in the center there were librarians.’”Giles chose cardboard to make the sculpture, a lightweight material that she and her assistants suspended from the gallery’s ceiling using fishing line. The effect is of a massive sculptural gesture floating in space.“I 3D scanned [the original model], and I wanted to blow it up,” said Giles, “so you can not only walk up to it, but also enter it.”Visitors to the exhibition enthusiastically enter and occupy the work, marveling at the intricacies of the sculpture’s construction. SurroundingIn the Center There Were Librarians, the curators include eight small-scale gestural sculptures by Giles, each 3D printed in plastic, presenting a compelling contrast between temporary gestures and permanent materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417741/yhjdu5nsszpk6effqige.gif"><figcaption>Faheem Majeed</figcaption></figure><h3>Faheem Majeed</h3>Faheem Majeed’s installation also plays on architectural themes with two large-scale pieces: Board-upand Lean-to.Both were created using small pieces of found-wood that Majeed and his assistants hand crafted and brightly dyed using Kool-Aid. “All the wood was actually salvaged from my own neighborhood and from previous projects,” explained Majeed. “And the funny thing is, I have an infinite amount of it. So I never run out! [laughs]”Lean-toreferences the immediate need of shelter and takes up a large area of the gallery. Similar to Giles’ In the Center There Were Librarians,visitors can walk underneath and occupy this large-scale sculpture, which references the simplest of structures: a lean-to. Considering the context of the piece—a building that once housed the city’s main library—it brings to mind (to this reviewer) the homeless citizens of Chicago who often use public libraries as their daytime homes.Yet despite Lean-to’s monumental presence—and meaning—it is Board-upthat steals the show. Covering one of the gallery’s large, arched windows, the sculpture’s thousands of multi-colored pieces reference a stained glass window—and at the same time, a boarded up abandoned building. The artist’s inspiration came from looking at board-ups on the Southside, which he considers metaphors for both neighborhoods and people.In making this piece, Majeed relied on a range of sources and inspirations, from Abstract Expressionists—such as Joan Mitchell and Jasper Johns—to the artists of the AfriCOBRA collective (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) founded in Chicago in 1968.“I’m thinking about AfriCOBRA. I’m having conversations with painting. And I started to think about those moments when color theory penetrated my practice,” said Majeed.Looking at the works of Mitchell and Johns and some of the original AfricCOBRA artists—such as Wadsworth Jarrell and Nelson Stevens—you can see the influence of their vibrant, energetic paintings on Majeed’s art. Yet, Majeed has taken those influences and expanded upon them, making works that are grounded in Modernist color theory, but reflective of the present moment’s concerns. The end result: an art that is relevant and highly engaging to today’s audiences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417742/njvbgyfxmf5leff3pmct.gif"><figcaption>Jeff Carter</figcaption></figure><h3>Jeff Carter</h3>At first glance, Jeff Carter’s sculptural installations don’t read as political commentary. But his stated influences include the political barricades built by pro-democracy protestors in China.“I thought about protest barriers: wherever they’re built, they’re very localized,” explained Carter. “[The barriers are constructed with] whatever’s at hand and whatever building methods and materials can be accessed quickly; and so, they’re like a snapshot of the immediate surroundings.”The ironic thing is that Carter uses Ikea products as his raw materials to make these “barricades”—materials that can be found just about anywhere, in every household and every city where an Ikea store is located.“Ikea is the same everywhere,” says Carter, “So these sculptures are an attempt to formalize the protest barriers. They’re meant to look haphazard and rather aggressive—and take up a lot more space than they should—but they’re also really precise. There’s a layer of precision hidden inside of the chaos.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417743/svv5sfij0lpicns77krm.gif"><figcaption>Jeff Carter</figcaption></figure>There is something strangely familiar about Carter’s constructions. The elements of each piece evoke furniture design, yet there is no functionality in any of the works. Each piece has an absurdist quality to it. Indeed, a piece like “Occupier”—a bright orange, desk-like form punctured with umbrellas and decorated with flashing lights and siren sounds—evokes Surrealist works of the early 20th-Century.“As a sculptor, it’s kind of fun and challenging to use [Ikea products] as a raw material,” said Carter. “It’s a highly refined product, so I’m negotiating with the material a lot because of what it wants to do and what I want it to do. Often times I change my ideas and adapt things to make the best use of its characteristics.”What Carter wanted to do in Tuned Mass was create works that block the pathways of visitors as they walk through the gallery, taking up the curators’ challenge to fill the space while simultaneously exploring architectural themes. <html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417714/om9gtzpwhesaxscxaz6x.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;By GINNY VAN ALYEAJust a few weeks ago the international art world scratched it head when the news was shared that the City of Chicago&nbsp;decided to sell a monumental&nbsp;public work by artist Kerry James Marshall, which the city commissioned&nbsp;for the Legler Branch Library in West Garfield Park in 1995 for $10,000. The initial estimates were that the work&nbsp;could sell at auction for&nbsp;$10–15 million and the&nbsp;painting&nbsp;was to&nbsp;be auctioned off by Christie's. Mayor&nbsp;Rahm Emmanuel&nbsp;said the money from the sale would be used to improve and update the west side&nbsp;library as well as to invest in up and coming artists who may some day gain international renown like Marshall has.But the public outcry was loud and clear. Following a record-setting&nbsp;sale by the City,&nbsp;earlier this year, of another work&nbsp;by Marshall (Past Times&nbsp;sold for $21.1 million at Sotheby’s to Sean Combs (AKA P-Diddy)),&nbsp;the optics of quickly selling another unique cultural asset for vague budgetary purposes were less than positive. Chicago prizes its public art collection and has built a stellar reputation as one of the best spots in the world to view and appreciate&nbsp;public art created by a range of artists, from emerging to blue chip. To think that the most financially valuable works could be carved up and sold to the highest bidder was deeply upsetting, especially to the artist who created this most recent work destinted for the auction block.&nbsp;Marshall was quoted as saying,&nbsp;“I am certain they could get more money if they sold the Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza.”Now, just over a week before the work was to be sold,&nbsp;Mayor Rahm Emanuel has changed his mind, managing to keep in tact his otherwise positive reputation as a civic leader and man who is supportive of arts and culture in the city. The Mayor&nbsp;made the decision to pull Marshall's Knowledge and Wonder&nbsp;from the Nov. 15 auction at Christie’s in New York City.In Monday's Chicago Tribune Mayor Emanuel&nbsp;admitted,&nbsp;“I was swimming and thought, ‘This is not what I wanted, given the city’s contributions to public art, and Kerry’s a friend and also a great ambassador for Chicago,’” Emanuel said Sunday afternoon. “I reached out to him and said, ‘Look, I don’t want this. If you’re not happy, I don’t want to go forward.’”The sale was intended to raise money for the library it was commissioned for, but instead the work will be reinstalled in the Legler as soon as possible, and now&nbsp;the mayor said it will also have&nbsp;additional security to protect it. A revised plan to support the library is being evaluated.Chicago's perpetual struggle of being the second (or third) city when compared to its coastal peers means&nbsp;we are always trying to make the case to students, individuals, families and businesses&nbsp;(hi Amazon!)&nbsp;that being and staying here is worth it in so many ways. Mayor Reverses Decision to Auction Kerry James Marshall Public Art

By GINNY VAN ALYEA&nbsp;Friday, November 2, 2018 will be a big opening night around the city, as many galleries open major shows that will be their final exhibitions of the year.&nbsp;The busy night also coincides with the 25th edition of SOFA, which takes place on Navy Pier all weekend. Following the end of the fair's show on Friday, art lovers are encouraged to go out into the city's dozens of art spaces to see what is new in area galleries.Per history, it's a big opening night in&nbsp;River North, and more openings are also happening in other city arts districts like West Town&nbsp;neighborhoods. Drawing on personal experiences and research on these subjects, as well as history and popular culture, Rakowitz creates illustrated objects, installations, and performances that invite viewers to contemplate their complicit relationship to the political world around them, recognizing that hospitality and hostility are interlinked.For this exhibition, the&nbsp;gallery’s architecture has been transformed into the layout of&nbsp;Room Zin King Ashurnasirpal II’s 9th century BC palace&nbsp;(near present-day Mosul in northern Iraq), which stood uncovered as a powerful testament to the Assyrian Golden Age from its 1854 excavation by British archaeologists until its tragic destruction in 2015. Working with a team of assistants, Michael Rakowitz has reconstructed the monumental limestone reliefs that once lined the palace walls with depictions of&nbsp;apkallu&nbsp;or winged guardians with human heads, who hold offerings of pollen and young date fronds, beneath cuneiform extolling the King’s greatness.&nbsp;Room Z&nbsp;appears as it stood at the time of its untimely demise with only seven of thirteen panels present.<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3192/original/mr.gif" alt=""></figure><h3>&nbsp;</h3> &nbsp;Michael Koerner: My DNANovember 2–December 22&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/michael-koerner-my-dna">Catherine Edelman&nbsp;Gallery</a>On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the town of Nagasaki, a short distance from the home of artist Michael Koerner's mother. The chemical fallout from the bomb instantly killed tens of thousands of people, and left many more reeling from its effects for the rest of their lives. Koerner's family is just one example of the devastation that chemical warfare had during WWII. Koerner&nbsp;(b. Okinawa, Japan, 1963) is the oldest of five brothers. Due to&nbsp;genetic deformities resulting from cancer, he is the only remaining living sibling. His brothers' fates (and potentially his own one day) can be linked to their mother, who was eleven years old on&nbsp;that ill-fated August day and lived in Sasebo, Japan, 45&nbsp;miles away&nbsp;from the blast. With a family history of various cancers, it is no wonder Koerner became an organic chemist, currently teaching at the University of Illinois at&nbsp;Urbana-Champaign.Koerner's 6 x 8" tintypes seduce the viewer with glistening deep blacks, metallic silvers, and odd green, yellow and blue hues, to talk about disease. By blowing through a straw, or dripping chemicals from an eyedropper onto tin plates, Koerner manipulates collodian to create sunbursts, explosions, amorphous shapes, and double helixes, all of which reference his family history.<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3193/original/coronae-9870-2017.gif" alt=""></figure> &nbsp;David Lozano,&nbsp;Madera Picado,Blake Aaseby,&nbsp;Gather RoundJohn Fraser,&nbsp;Found in the MakingNovember 2–December 28&nbsp;at <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/david-lozano-blake-aaseby-and-john-fraser">Zolla/Lieberman&nbsp;Gallery</a>The work of three artists will be on view at Zolla/Lieberman in River North, and each artist is focused on materials.&nbsp;Papel Picado is a Mexican Folk Art of cutting decorative paper into cut designs that are then displayed as brightly colored banners. Inspired by this historic practice, David Lozano fashions his Madera (wood) Picado series.Within layers of condensed mapping, Blake Aaseby balances a push and pull of painted planes, documented line-work, and recalled shapes in order to form convoluted re-tellings of past events. His work aims at creating maps to a landscape he finds is both fading and forming, one that rests between the past and present.&nbsp;John Fraser's&nbsp;acrylic/wax on carved wood constructions make for playful material illusions that draw the viewer close, out of a desire to know how something was done, and then make the viewer also step back to behold a new artistic object created from a natural resource.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3194/original/johnfraserpromo-orig.gif" alt=""></figure> &nbsp;Shade Garden: Jessica LabatteNovember 2–December 22 at <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/shade-garden-jessica-labatte">Western Exhibitions</a>Shade Garden, Jessica Labatte’s second solo exhibition at Western Exhibitions, continues the artist’s explorations of paradoxes and illusions within photographic images.&nbsp;&nbsp;The works in&nbsp;Shade Garden&nbsp;champion beauty in the everyday as a radical political gesture in our contemporary moment. The images explore photographic notions of the visible and invisible, the present and withdrawn.&nbsp;Shade Garden&nbsp;will include two interrelated series of color photographs.The first series is a group of floral still lives. Small and medium sized prints will be installed in a salon fashion in the gallery alongside three monumentally scaled prints. By GINNY VAN ALYEAWhen I used to lead introductory&nbsp;tours of SOFA,&nbsp;there were some general points I always wanted to leave my group with as they headed out on their own to explore what can be an overwhelming and overstimulating art fair.&nbsp;There is so much to see and take in, that at some point your senses might not be able to handle it! Having a&nbsp;few key things in mind as you wander nearly 80 booths can help you manage the visual binge.While SOFA has made its name by&nbsp;being&nbsp;focused on the same part of the contemporary art market&nbsp;for two and a half decades, it has also evolved to welcome in new perspectives from the art world. Mostly SOFA is dedicated to Sculptural Objects and Functional Art - basically, sculpture and 3D works, but today&nbsp;there is more design on view than ever, which makes sense with SOFA's functional directive, and there is also more 2D work that shows up from time to time, offering, for example,&nbsp;a clever play on painting objects that may in fact by sculptural.&nbsp;This brief, and hopefully handy, overview of what's on view at SOFA this year in the gallery booths should help you see some of the show's hallmarks and come away with an understanding of what makes SOFA a different kind of contemporary art fair all together.Of course, once you go see it all for yourself, you can decide what makes SOFA unique.&nbsp;Complete information may be found at <a href="http://www.sofaexpo.com/">www.sofaexpo.com</a> &nbsp;GLASSGlass is what SOFA is most known for, even though it's not what dominates the fair. However, there's no denying that a visit to SOFA will offer an encounter with lions like Dale Chihuly as well as Lino Tagliapietra (after 16 years with CGN I can say that name four times fast!) &nbsp;The mezmerizing, traveling Hot Glass Show&nbsp;by Corning is also a not-to-be-missed chance&nbsp;to learn about the science and technology behind innovations in glass through live, narrated glassmaking demonstrations, offered all day at the fair.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3176/original/3.gif" alt=""></figure> &nbsp;<h3>&nbsp;</h3>CERAMICCeramic art at SOFA take so many forms. I'm always so taken in by porcelain because even though it's so delicate it can take on so many shapes.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3177/original/ceramic.gif" alt=""></figure> &nbsp;TEXTURE + TECHNIQUESo much of what's at SOFA is about contemporary art but it also references craft and decorative techniques from history, such as basket weaving and other functional arts.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3179/original/1.gif" alt=""></figure> &nbsp;MATERIALSSo much of an artist's challenge is working with various materials, and at SOFA this is always abundantly on view. Artists must figure out how to manipulate and work within a certain medium and then determine how a work can be displayed and enjoyed.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3180/original/6.gif" alt=""></figure>ILLUSIONThis is one of my favorite things about the art at SOFA - so much of it is created just to be visually appreciated and marvelled at. News from Around the Art World: October 22nd, 2018

By GINNY VAN ALYEAI first met the organizers, and&nbsp;cultural cheerleaders, behind<a href="http://www.diasporalrhythms.net"> Diasporal Rhythms</a> 5 years ago,&nbsp;on the occasion of their 10th anniversary celebrating art of the African Diaspora. When I got to know collectors D.E. Simmons and Patric McCoy in 2013 they each told me about the group's mission as well as the&nbsp;changes they had&nbsp;undergone during a&nbsp;decade of finding their collective identity and outreach efforts. When Diasporal Rhythms started in 2003, there were four founding members; today they number closer to 100.&nbsp;Back in 2013 when I first learned about the group and their tours, Simmons described the&nbsp;fall home tour series&nbsp;as&nbsp;uniquely&nbsp;reflecting&nbsp;the spirit of the South Side art community and having a goal of showing off the&nbsp;talented community of&nbsp;artists doing wonderful works worthy of notoriety, and more important, of being added to other collections. Simmons said at the time, “I always talk about us as the little organization that could, and can, and does."He also warned me&nbsp;then that&nbsp;tour-goers can get a little overwhelmed at first, but ultimately the sensory overload is productive. He was absolutely right then, and now, and I decided it was time to dive right in. All the sudden the group's 15th anniversary&nbsp;arrived this fall.&nbsp;I knew it was time for me to finally&nbsp;go on this year's&nbsp;art tour of the South Side of Chicago taking place in October. I invited a friend, a Hyde Park native who knew the area well but admitted she wasn't aware of how many private collections there were throughout the South Side, and we had a fun and surprising afternoon going behind the scenes of some very special and uniquely personal art collections.&nbsp;We met at the DuSable Museum of Art and boarded a cheerful, very Chicago, trolley at the south entrance to the museum. The tours offered this year&nbsp;went in three directions: Bronzeville, South Shore, and the South Suburbs. Our particular tour was just of Bronzeville and would encompass a museum as well as four private homes. You could go on one route in the morning and then another in the afternoon, but this year for me that was not to be (it was a miracle I could go at all, but my helpful husband took our two toddlers on a whirlwind visit through lunch in Hyde Park followed by stimulation overload at the Museum of Science of Industry for 3 hours). The variety of tours held on the tour weekend each year is evidence of the depth of art to be explored on this side of the city (I say side, since it certainly is not limited to a single neighborhood or ZIP code).&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3164/original/sb.jpg" alt=""></figure>Our tour leader did not join us for our first stop, which worked out well since that left our group without a minder to remind us that we were on a schedule. With our first stop at the Smart Museum of Art, we were able to take in&nbsp;all the exhibitions on view right now and we definitely went over our allotted time. The exhibitions at the Smart&nbsp;fit particularly well with the DR tour, as the museum's&nbsp;newest show, The Time is Now! Art Worlds of Chicago's South Side, which opened in September, recreates a visual understanding and context of how in&nbsp;the 1960s and 1970s Chicago’s cultural landscape was shaped by the South Side’s vibrant art worlds. Focusing primarily on African American artists in and out of the Black Arts Movement, the exhibition features approximately 100 objects assembled from the Smart Museum’s collection and other public and private collections. Artists featured include several who are gaining broader appreciation as of late:&nbsp;Gertrude Abercrombie, Ralph Arnold,&nbsp;Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu,&nbsp;Carolyn Lawrence,&nbsp;Suellen Rocca, Gerald Willams, Karl Wirsum, and Joseph Yoakum, among many others.<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3155/original/kjm.jpg" alt=""></figure><figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3161/original/nc.jpg" alt=""></figure>Also on view at the museum is&nbsp;Expanding Narratives: The Figure and the Ground,&nbsp;the first iteration in a three-part exhibition series.&nbsp;Expanding Narratives&nbsp;uses the formal relationship between the figure and the ground in Western art history as a conceptual springboard into discussions around visual representation, the museum space, and the role of the Smart Museum’s collection in fostering the exchange of diverse perspectives. The exhibition includes works by artists from Chicago and beyond, including&nbsp;McArthur Binion, Nick Cave, Rashid Johnson,&nbsp;Kerry James Marshall,&nbsp;Kehinde Wiley, and several&nbsp;others.<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3154/original/1.jpg" alt=""></figure>Once our trolley driver herded us back on board, we were off to the home of an artist and collector, who also turned out to be my friend's former high school art teacher. Simmons' words all those years ago about art overload still didn't prepare me for the number of works hung in the collector's home. Right away she welcomed the group and began a room by room tour of the works she collected over the years, many by fellow artists and friends. Works both large and small are hung salon style on every wall, in every room,&nbsp;placed near African antiques as well as contemporary sculpture. We saw pieces by Sylvester Britton, Margaret Burroughs and Jae&nbsp;Jarrell, among others. The collector's enthusiasm was contagious – which embodies&nbsp;the point of the tours – to inspire visitors to look around their own communities to embrace creativity and make it part of day to day life. The collector said, as many do, that she buys what she loves and she loves it every day. She admits that once she got started, she couldn't stop, even when it seemed like there wasn't any more room.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3162/original/parker.jpg" alt=""></figure><figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3163/original/parker1.jpg" alt=""></figure><figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3156/original/burroughs.jpg" alt=""></figure>The next collection in nearby Kenwood was in a two story condo owned by an art historian, professor and lecturer&nbsp;who's even published a large book,&nbsp;African Art: The Diaspora and Beyond. His home was packed with many antiquities&nbsp;and artifacts from Africa as well as contemporary paintings and sculptures by artists working today. He grouped once such collection into a section devoted to contemporary depictions of African and African American men, who as he said, are not throwing a ball or playing a horn. Here we saw a unique framed brass sculpture by Richard Hunt as well as more works by Margaret Burroughs, Joyce Owens, Ralph Arnold, and Faith Ringgold.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3157/original/mccoy1.jpg" alt=""></figure><figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3158/original/mccoy2.jpg" alt=""></figure>I saw Patric McCoy's remarkable collection several years ago and have never forgotten it, so it was a great opportunity to see how the collection has (somehow) managed to grow, even though it's hard to believe McCoy has an inch of wall space left in his Kenwood condo. McCoy, an environmental scientist, has amassed 1,100 works by more than 300 artists&nbsp;and he displays them all. Arranged in mini collections, such as music, evil eyes, bicycles, McCoy's passion is charming as well as infectious.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/3159/original/mccoy3.jpg" alt=""></figure>We ran out of time to enjoy the final stop on the tour, but it was in a Victorian home featuring a great deal of contemporary work, in particular work by the stained glass artist who lives there (and whose work we saw in each of the other homes on the tour!)My friend and I enjoyed a gorgeous fall day in Bronzeville and left knowing we'd like to come back to spend more time exploring and appreciating these collections built by these warm and welcoming collectors. Each collection felt unique to the neighborhood as well as to Chicago itself, and enjoying home tours such as these emphasizes the message that art collecting is fun and enjoyable and most of all doable. There are no right or wrong ways to collect art or even to display it in your home. Art makes a home come to life and that is a joy to be shared.&nbsp;Back when I visited with Simmons, he explained that getting people to interact at home is more unusual than one might think. He acknowledged&nbsp;there is some reluctance to opening up one’s home, “There’s something about not letting people into your space. Socially, I think in Chicago people tend to say, ‘Oh I’ll meet you here,’ but I’ve noticed that many people won’t invite you over. This home tour is special. It’s not only on the South Side, but it makes people open doors...so others can experience passion in a personal space. It’s a rare opportunity.” Homeowners quickly find it to be a very positive experience. They enjoy seeing guests inspired by the abundance of artwork. To Simmons, “It is a wonderful exchange - you get to talk about your passion for your collection and answer questions. We’re asking people to join the conversation and explore the possibilities. Diasporal Rhythms Annual Art Tour Shows a Passion For Living With Art

At EXPO CHICAGO last weekend, I realized that it was a year ago that we started first hearing about Art Design Chicago&#39;s many plans for 2018. What began as a clever, interactive marketing campaign spearheaded by the smart-pants creatives at Leo Burnett, has grown into a smart and engaging lineup of collaborative&nbsp;public programming that has lasted all year long.

Now that we find ourselves in October already, &nbsp;and we long-ago solved those marketing teases we first saw at EXPO in 2017,&nbsp;we can&#39;t overlook all there is still to do, thanks to ADC.&nbsp;This month alone there is a&nbsp;full slate to experience, as&nbsp;six&nbsp;new exhibitions&nbsp;open at cultural institutions across the city and beyond, exploring topics such as&nbsp;product design,&nbsp;mid-century art deco,&nbsp;Chicago bicycle culture, and much more.

The Block Museum of Art offers a film series showcasing the artistry of the Chicago design firm Goldsholl &amp; Associates, including screenings of mid-century film experiments and advertising campaigns, &aacute; la&nbsp;Mad Men.&nbsp;

In the 1950s, Chicago-based design firm Goldsholl Design Associates made a name for itself with innovative &quot;designs-in-film.&quot; Headed by Morton and Millie Goldsholl, the studio produced television spots, films, trademarks, corporate identities, and print advertisements for international corporations like Kimberly-Clark, Motorola, and 7-Up. Although they were compared to some of the most celebrated design firms of the day, the Goldsholls and their designers are relatively unknown today. Opening in September 2018, the Block Museum&rsquo;s exhibition&nbsp;Up is Down: Mid-Century Experimentation in Advertising and Film at the Goldsholl Studio&nbsp;reexamines the innovative work of Goldsholl and Associates and its national impact.

This show celebrates his legacy as an educator with artworks by Paschke alongside his teaching material from the Northwestern University Archives and generous loans from Marc and Sharon Paschke. &nbsp;

Yasuhiro Ishimoto: Someday, Chicago&nbsp;examines the work of American-born photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto (1921&ndash;2012) through the lens of Chicago, where Ishimoto lived for nearly a decade and where he would continue to return throughout his life. Celebrated by many as one of the most influential photographers of Japan in the 20th century, Ishimoto also maintained deep ties to his adopted home city where he arrived in 1945 after having been interned during World War II. It was in Chicago that he first developed his uniquely modernist vision&mdash;both at the historic Institute of Design (ID) in dialogue with L&aacute;szl&oacute; Moholy-Nagy, Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, and other teachers there; and in the city&rsquo;s streets, where he captured changes reflective of broader societal shifts happening across the United States.

The Art Institute of Chicago presents the first major exhibition dedicated solely to the groundbreaking Hairy&nbsp;Who. This&nbsp;self-named, self-organized group of six artists&mdash;Jim Falconer, Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Suellen Rocca, and Karl&nbsp;Wirsum&mdash;all came of age in Chicago, graduated from the School of the Art Institute, and began exhibiting at the Hyde Park Art Center in&nbsp;the late 1960s. Presented on the 50th anniversary of their final Chicago show, The Art Institute&rsquo;s major survey exhibition and publication feature key works as&nbsp;well as archival ephemera contextualizing the group&rsquo;s creative process, working methods, and the social and political milieu in which they made their art.

Over and over the Chicago Imagists cast the figure in numerous roles, distorting it and layering it with metaphor and personal meaning. Outrageous, irreverent, and humorous and inspired by popular culture, these works reflect highly original expressions of the human form.

This exhibition features the Elmhurst College Art Collection, focused on artists working in Chicago between about 1950 and the present. The exhibition is curated by Suellen Rocca, one of the original members of the prominent Imagist group known as the Hairy Who and Curator and Director of Exhibitions at Elmhurst College.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Chicago was shaped by art and ideas produced and circulated on the South Side. Yet the history of the period&#39;s creative and social ferment has often remained segregated by the city&rsquo;s social, political, and geographic divides.

The Time Is Now!&nbsp;takes a nuanced look at the cultural history of Chicago&rsquo;s South Side during this momentous era of change and conflict, with a focus on artists of the Black Arts Movement. Through nearly 100 objects, the show upends dominant narratives of the period and unearths rich stories by examining watershed cultural moments from the Hairy Who to the&nbsp;Wall of Respect, from the Civil Rights movement to the AfriCOBRA, from vivid protest posters to visionary outsider art, and from the Free University movement to the radical jazz of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.

Chicago has long served as a hub where creative people of different cultures, customs, and perspectives collide and converge.&nbsp;Living Architecture&nbsp;is a timely, large-scale multidisciplinary exhibition that showcases the work of over 50 Chicago contemporary immigrant artists. Located at 6018North, a historical home in the Edgewater community built and designed by immigrants, the exhibition draws from Chicago&rsquo;s rich heritage of immigrant artists&rsquo; work to highlight the continuous influence of immigrants in shaping visual culture locally and nationally.

Coined by art writers and critics in the mid- to late-twentieth century, the so-called Chicago School consisted of two groups of artists&mdash;the Monster Roster and the Imagists. These artists diverged from the broader mid-century trend toward abstraction and were largely ignored or dismissed by critics in New York, who were defining the canon of modernism. However, what happens when the categorization and labeling of a group of artists is unwanted or contested? This exhibition considers the problematic nature of art historical categories and explores what other stories are missed by perpetuating a single narrative. Between the Buildings&nbsp;also reflects Krannert Art Museum&rsquo;s strong collection of works by Chicago-based artists developed by former director Stephen Prokopoff (1983&ndash;1991).
