Produced by the MCA, The Color Is is an experience based on the concept of freedom from limits and described as a couture-created body of work that is an amalgamation of cultures, times and ideas, emancipating them from the limits of regular classifications. Gala tickets will be available alongside the exhibition on-sale, beginning April 6.In addition to the performance at ArtEdge: Celebrating Nick Cave, there will be two public performances of The Color Is at the DuSable on Sunday, May 22 at 5:00 p.m. and Monday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m.Running concurrently with Forothermore, Cave will also debut a new video work at <a href="https://artonthemart.com">Art on theMART</a>, the world’s largest permanent digital art projection, as part of its Summer 2022 programming. Displayed against a backdrop of floor-to-ceiling geometric vinyl wallpaper collaboratively designed with the artist’s partner Bob Faust, Forothermore traces artistic themes and Cave’s evolving interests over three decades, with works from as early as 1989.Forothermore features over a dozen works from Cave’s Soundsuit series in addition to the debut of his new series, Soundsuits 9:29. The head-to-toe garments are constructed with a mélange of materials, among them beads, pearls, wire, feather, sequins, synthetic hair, and twigs. Originally created by Cave in response to the Rodney King beating in 1992, Soundsuits 9:29 addresses today’s heightened social unrest and reckoning for racial justice in response to the death of George Floyd.Another highlight of the exhibition is Cave’s immersive 14-channel, room-sized video installation Hy-Dyve, that is presented in the adjacent fourth floor gallery and surrounds visitors with projections of flowing water, blinking eyes and mysterious creatures and patterns. Readers adored the book. Gertrude Abercrombie Crushes Estimate in Hindman Outsider Sale

EXPO CHICAGO Announces Its 2022 Exhibitor List

The visiting residency program returns in 2022, after a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to welcome three artists from Nigeria, Ghana, and Latvia, and one from Minneapolis, in addition to eight artists from the Chicago area.For a decade, the Residency program—with a particular focus on ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, Native American) artists—has provided valuable studio spaces, art classes, and supportive resources, while connecting the residents to the city’s artists, curators, art institutions, and cultural communities. Sculpture Milwaukee Announces Appointment of Ugo Rondinone As Guest Curator for 6th Edition

<html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721419010/nlpfwwfveyhzrxarv9ch.jpg"></figure>Via Ian Bricke – VP, Independent Film at NetflixNetflix's VP, Independent Film, Ian Bricke, announced last week that Chicago artist Hebru Brantley is one of three debut filmmakers to be part of Netflix's Emerging Filmmaker Initiative (EFI), an annual program created to cultivate and accelerate the careers of the next wave of marquee filmmakers working in high-demand genres like sci-fi, action, horror and thriller.&nbsp;"In 2017, <a href="https://about.netflix.com/en/news/academy-award-winner-spike-lee-forms-creative-partnership-with-netflix">Spike Lee</a> introduced us to director Stefon Bristol and his standout short film, See You Yesterday— an exciting genre-bending proof of concept that we ultimately developed into a Netflix feature film...Stefon’s short opened a lot of doors, but for many up-and-coming filmmakers, it takes years just to get that first shot. We want to change that," said Bricke.&nbsp;EFI is intended to be an annual opportunity for the streaming giant to give three breakout filmmakers a change to develop, fund, produce and distribute ambitious genre short films. Through the initiative, these filmmakers will gain priceless access to the film studio ecosystem early in their careers and receive hands-on experience in development, casting, production, scoring, editing and more. Netflix says it will also pair each filmmaker with an experienced director mentor. Directors Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code, Apollo 13) and Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black, The Addams Family) offered invaluable guidance to this year’s filmmakers.&nbsp;EFI’s first three films will be released globally on Netflix on February 17.&nbsp;Hebru Brantley's film, Erax, takes place during a sleepover. Auntie Opal and her niece Nina accidentally release the mythical and dangerous Erax creatures that must be returned to the storybook from which they escaped.&nbsp;Brantley is a multi-disciplinary visual artist from the South Side of Chicago whose work explores a contemporary and distinct narrative that challenges the traditional view of the hero or protagonist. Brantley has collaborated with brands such as Nike, Hublot and Adidas, among many others, and collectors of his work include top athletes, celebrities, and filmmakers. The “House of Tomorrow” showed millions of World’s Fair attendees a technology-driven vision of what domestic life could be in the future as it featured many new ideas from the first GE dishwasher to a personal airplane hangar. It was through this house that the Kecks found a new way to harness solar energy, leading them to make energy efficiency breakthroughs throughout their career.After the creation of this home, the Keck architecture firm built mid-century homes that now stand as early precursors to today’s sustainable building practices. This exhibition explores how&nbsp;the Keck brothers&nbsp;became the first “solar architects” with historic photos, architectural artifacts, design diagrams, and a commissioned artist interpretation by Jan Tichy centered on glass and light.Accompanying the main exhibition is Tichy’s immersive installation Reflectance, which will invite visitors into van der Rohe’s historic 1952 McCormick House, located on Elmhurst Art Museum’s property, to explore its domestic space as an environment of movement, light, activity, and wonder. United States Artists Announces Judilee Reed as President and CEO

The eight Chicago-based organizations are the Bronzeville Black Chicagoan Historical Society, Chicago History Museum, Chicago Public Art Group, Lewis University, Muslim American Leadership Alliance, Puerto Rican Arts Alliance, South Side Community Art Center and Trickster Cultural Center while the three organizations based in the Lowcountry of South Carolina to receive the grant are Clemson University, Gibbes Museum of Art and The Educational Foundation of the University of South Carolina Lancaster.This announcement represents the second round of organizations to receive the Broadening Narratives grant. She has curated several thematic group exhibitions, including, A Shape That Stands Up (2016) and Sisters and Brothers (2014), as well as solo exhibitions of Lucas Blalock, Sarah Cain, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Alex Da Corte, Abigail DeVille, Rafa Esparza, Maryam Jafri, Ann Greene Kelly, and Simone Leigh.&nbsp;James has contributed texts to Artforum, The International Review of African American Art, and various institutional exhibition catalogues. She is a recipient of the inaugural Noah Davis Prize from the Underground Museum, Los Angeles and Chanel Culture Fund (2021), a curatorial research fellowship from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts (2021), and a curatorial fellowship from the VIA Art Foundation (2018). MCA Chicago Announces Appointment of New Curatorial Leadership

&nbsp;$13.8 million already secured, including generous $1 million+ gifts from Builders Initiative and the Guida Family Foundation, along with other foundation grants and individual donors with concentration from its South Side community. Public campaign phase is now active.&nbsp;Via PRCHICAGO -- The Board of Directors of Hyde Park Art Center proudly announces that, effective Spring 2022, the renowned non-profit hub for contemporary art located on Chicago’s vibrant South Side will shift to a tuition-free model in its core curriculum education programs, making it the nation’s first contribute-what-you-can visual art school for all ages. This radical move culminates Hyde Park Art Center’s ambitious five-year strategic plan dedicated to ensuring more equitable access to artmaking, education, and community engagement for years to come.In 2018, the Art Center Board initiated the $16 million ART MAKES capital campaign, the largest in its 82-year history, to secure a tuition-free education model, establish an endowment, and increase funding for general operations and artist investment in coming years. The ART MAKES campaign, co-chaired by Cynthia Heusing, Walter &amp; Shirley Massey, and Richard Wright, has raised $13.8 million to date, thanks in large part to three generous lead gifts: over $2 million provided from <a href="http://www.buildersinitiative.org/">Builders Initiative</a>, $1 million from the Chicago-based Guida Family Foundation, and $500,000 from the Chicago-based David C. and Sarajean&nbsp;Ruttenberg&nbsp;Arts Foundation. The Art Center’s Board of Directors has been critical to the campaign’s success, committing more than 25% of the total funds raised to date. Further support has been received from local and national foundation and corporate grants, in addition to gifts from dozens of donors from around Chicago and the Art Center’s own South Side neighborhood. Core curriculum classes comprise about two-thirds of all offerings and include staple Art Center programs at all learning levels and across all artistic&nbsp;media, from ceramics, painting and drawing to printmaking and digital photography. &nbsp;So as to provide students from all backgrounds the means to participate, create, and benefit from the dynamic learning environment and community at the Art Center, with the Spring 2022 registration, all of the Art Center's core curriculum classes will be offered without a set tuition price and all participants will be asked to contribute how they can, at whatever level they are able. This restructuring of the School and Studios will result in Hyde Park Art Center proudly becoming Chicago’s – and the nation’s – first tuition-free visual art school for all ages.In addition, monies raised through ART MAKES will be dedicated to investing in the Art Center’s ongoing Pathways Programs delivering broader access to visual arts for some 700 K–8 students in in its neighboring communities—Bronzeville, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Washington Park, and Woodlawn – along with supporting more than 150 teen and young adult artists through its arts and professional training both for high school and post-high school (18-25- year-old) youth. Further engaging the community, the Art Center currently hosts a robust series of artist talks, exhibition openings, free artmaking workshops, and other creative events; increased funding for public programs will provide an even greater platform and space for artists, community members, and peer organizations to collaborate and contribute to civic dialogue and social awareness.&nbsp;Increasing investment in artistsEqually critical is a deeper investment in professional artists. Among the current Hyde Park Art Center initiatives that will benefit from increased funding are faculty/teaching artist development for its current 50 faculty members via additional resources and trainings for the development of studio work and pedagogical practice, as well as provide professional opportunities for artists growing their careers, both inside the building and beyond, through valuable mentorship and exhibition programs such as the Center and Bridge offerings.Further, the Art Center’s Jackman Goldwasser Residency currently provides local artists access to long-term, rent-free studio space, and international artists the opportunity to live and work in Chicago. Building on this, the residency program will expand its international presence by building on exchanges where Chicago artists travel abroad and connect to the global stage while international artists and curators visit Chicago to connect with our local artists. Hyde Park Art Center to Become Nation's First Tuition-Free Art School

<html><head></head><body>Via PROn September 28, Hindman Auctions set a new world auction record for Martin Wong’s Persuit (El Que Gane Pierde - He Who Wins Looses), 1984, which sold for $1.1 million in its Post War &amp; Contemporary Art Auction. Offered with an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000, the work saw competitive bidding and received strong interest from museums and private collectors, with a U.S. institution ultimately emerging as the winning bidder. Wong, an openly gay man of Chinese ancestry, found acceptance in the open- minded hippie counterculture while working mostly in ceramics and performance art. Wong earned the most recognition in the Bay Area for his draftsmanship, as well as the nickname Human Instamatic for his ability to crank out $7.50 portraits at street art fairs. It was not until moving to New York’s Lower East Side in 1978 that he turned to painting as his primary creative expression.Wong is recognized for his merging of social realism and visionary art styles, as well as considering themes such as ethnic and racial identities. He became known for documenting New York City in his works. This piece captures the city in the gritty 1980s and the way in which urban life can feel imposing, particularly for the underrepresented.Persuit (El Que Gane Pierde - He Who Wins Looses) captures an ominous, authentic and gritty New York night and illusionistic wooden frame peppered with poetic phrasing, typically borrowed from his often collaborator Piñero.
