In the next couple of weeks CAC’s website (<a href="http://chicagoartistscoalition.org/">chicagoartistscoalition.org</a>)&nbsp;and Chicago Artists Resource (<a href="http://chicagoartistsresource.org/">chicagoartistsresource.org</a>) will merge into one site.&nbsp;Started in 2004 by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs, Chicago Artists Resource, AKA “CAR,” is a platform where artists and arts administrators across a variety of disciplines are able to find the resources to help grow and strengthen their careers. CAR was bequeathed by the city to CAC in 2012, where it has operated since as a separate program of Chicago Artists Coalition. Since its launch 15 years ago, CAR has become one of the most commonly used sites for artists and arts professionals in Chicago to post and find jobs and calls for artists, publicize events, and seek open studio spaces.“As CAC prepared for a brand refresh and new website that would be built on a more adaptable and up-to-date platform, it seemed appropriate to merge the two sites into one site that could both operate more smoothly and help us to better focus our efforts to serve Chicago artists,” said CAC's Executive Director, Caroline Older. “We are excited to be able to continue to offer the resources of CAR on an updated and more user-friendly website.”“Since launching CAR, I have been pleased to see it develop into a go-to resource for Chicago's artists.&nbsp; It makes sense that Chicago Artists Coalition is merging CAR into its own brand and website, and&nbsp;I am thrilled that it will&nbsp;remain an available and growing resource for artists of all disciplines” said Barbara Koenen, who founded and co-developed CAR while working at the Department of Cultural Affairs.While the website <a href="http://chicagoartistsresource.org/">chicagoartistsresource.org</a> will no longer exist on its own, the majority of the resources it offers will remain available on the CAC website, under a new section dedicated to jobs, calls, and space finder. Users will continue to be able to post jobs, calls, and spaces as they have in the past, and accounts that have been active within the last year will remain in place.&nbsp;Subscribers will&nbsp;continue to receive the bi-weekly newsletter, which features the latest opportunities for artists. Users, however, will no longer be able to post events on the website. They will be able to do so on the Chicago Arists Resource facebook group, and this group will remain in place indefinitely.To design and build the new site, CAC hired Legion Collective. “For us, the redesign provided an opportunity to merge two visually distinct communities into one unified experience,” said Jonathan Sluys, Partner and Executive Creative Director at Legion. “While they each seem quite distinct from afar, they both serve the same mission: to help artists live, work and thrive in the city. Now they also speak with one voice and on the same platform.&nbsp; Launch of the new, merged sites will take place between late February and early March, 2019. It’s been a great run, but all good things do come to an end. A big thanks to everyone for your support, encouragement and friendship." Hiebert founded the much loved space with Sidney Block, who died at 91 in late 2015.• <a href="http://galeriewaterton.com">Galerie Waterton</a>, a neighbor of Printworks at 311 W Superior, closed its doors in October. Owner Francois Grossas said he plans to make a change to his gallery operation in 2019 and that he will announce new plans hopefully this year.&nbsp;• After more than three decades in Chicago, Martha Schneider of <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/organizations/schneider-gallery">Schneider Gallery</a> will continue her legacy in 2019 as a private dealer focusing on photography. The gallery has been located in River North for more than 30 years, presenting more than 150 exhibitions. Martha will continue to work with artists on special projects and is now also available for private client consultations. The River North space at 770 N LaSalle opens a final exhibition on January 11 featuring photography by Whit Forrester. Wes Cowan founded Cowan's Auctions in 1995 in Cincinnati. Both will remain intimately involved in developing the strategy and vision of Hindman LLC where Leslie Hindman will serve on the Board as Co-Chair and Wes Cowan as Vice Chair. Hindman LLC will create one of the largest auction firms in America with its combined expertise and footprint. This Monday evening&nbsp;3Arts,&nbsp;the Chicago-based nonprofit grantmaking organization,&nbsp;awarded 20 Chicago artists with unrestricted grants at the&nbsp;11th&nbsp;annual 3Arts Awards Celebration, which took place&nbsp;at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The celebration honored the ten annual 3Arts Awards recipients along with ten recipients of&nbsp;Make a Wave—a unique&nbsp;artist-to-artist giving initiative.3Arts is a nonprofit organization that advocates for Chicago’s women artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities who work in the performing, teaching, and visual arts. <html><head></head><body><figure class="image"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dfafo598z/image/upload/v1721417714/om9gtzpwhesaxscxaz6x.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;By GINNY VAN ALYEAJust a few weeks ago the international art world scratched it head when the news was shared that the City of Chicago&nbsp;decided to sell a monumental&nbsp;public work by artist Kerry James Marshall, which the city commissioned&nbsp;for the Legler Branch Library in West Garfield Park in 1995 for $10,000. The initial estimates were that the work&nbsp;could sell at auction for&nbsp;$10–15 million and the&nbsp;painting&nbsp;was to&nbsp;be auctioned off by Christie's. Mayor&nbsp;Rahm Emmanuel&nbsp;said the money from the sale would be used to improve and update the west side&nbsp;library as well as to invest in up and coming artists who may some day gain international renown like Marshall has.But the public outcry was loud and clear. Following a record-setting&nbsp;sale by the City,&nbsp;earlier this year, of another work&nbsp;by Marshall (Past Times&nbsp;sold for $21.1 million at Sotheby’s to Sean Combs (AKA P-Diddy)),&nbsp;the optics of quickly selling another unique cultural asset for vague budgetary purposes were less than positive. Chicago prizes its public art collection and has built a stellar reputation as one of the best spots in the world to view and appreciate&nbsp;public art created by a range of artists, from emerging to blue chip. To think that the most financially valuable works could be carved up and sold to the highest bidder was deeply upsetting, especially to the artist who created this most recent work destinted for the auction block.&nbsp;Marshall was quoted as saying,&nbsp;“I am certain they could get more money if they sold the Picasso sculpture in Daley Plaza.”Now, just over a week before the work was to be sold,&nbsp;Mayor Rahm Emanuel has changed his mind, managing to keep in tact his otherwise positive reputation as a civic leader and man who is supportive of arts and culture in the city. The Mayor&nbsp;made the decision to pull Marshall's Knowledge and Wonder&nbsp;from the Nov. 15 auction at Christie’s in New York City.In Monday's Chicago Tribune Mayor Emanuel&nbsp;admitted,&nbsp;“I was swimming and thought, ‘This is not what I wanted, given the city’s contributions to public art, and Kerry’s a friend and also a great ambassador for Chicago,’” Emanuel said Sunday afternoon. “I reached out to him and said, ‘Look, I don’t want this. If you’re not happy, I don’t want to go forward.’”The sale was intended to raise money for the library it was commissioned for, but instead the work will be reinstalled in the Legler as soon as possible, and now&nbsp;the mayor said it will also have&nbsp;additional security to protect it. A revised plan to support the library is being evaluated.Chicago's perpetual struggle of being the second (or third) city when compared to its coastal peers means&nbsp;we are always trying to make the case to students, individuals, families and businesses&nbsp;(hi Amazon!)&nbsp;that being and staying here is worth it in so many ways. Mayor Reverses Decision to Auction Kerry James Marshall Public Art

Chicago is currently considering a public art registry in response to &#39;accidental&#39; mural removals and surface scrubbing that has taken place this year. What city workers mistook for every day &#39;nusiance&#39; graffiti was in some cases much loved &ndash; and even commissioned &ndash;&nbsp;street art created by artists from around the city. This past spring, overexuberant and prevasive efforts to spiff up the area around Amazon&#39;s hoped-for new northside&nbsp;home, should it choose Chicago for HQ2, led to the City&#39;s&nbsp;Streets and Sanitation department taking down a work by French&nbsp;artist Blek le Rat at the Cards Against Humanity offices. Blek le Rat has exhibited with Chicago&#39;s <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/vertical-gallery">Vertical Gallery</a> and is widely known as the Godfather of modern street art.&nbsp;

A decade-old mural&nbsp;in Wicker Park, this one by acclaimed Chicago-based&nbsp;street artist&nbsp;Hebru Brantley, was accidentally painted over (after first being vandalized) by city workers who mistook it for graffiti earlier this year. The mural, which depicts Brantley&#39;s signature Flyboy characters, was one of the artist&#39;s&nbsp;earliest. This week Brantley completed a&nbsp;new mural in the original location,&nbsp;funded by Wicker Park Bucktown Special Service Area (SSA) #33. The community missed the work so much once it was covered up that&nbsp;they made a point of funding its replacement.

&ldquo;Public art is a vital part of the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods. Supporting and maintaining these works has always been a major part of our mission&mdash;the streets are a public art museum that we are constantly curating,&rdquo; said WPB SSA #33 Commission Chair&nbsp;Brent Norsman. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re thrilled Hebru Brantley was able to return and create this new piece, and we&rsquo;re working with Alderman Brian Hopkins and other city officials to ensure that public murals like Brantley&rsquo;s will not be mistaken for graffiti in the future.&rdquo;&nbsp;

More murals have been coverd up this year, which is why the city and the Department of Cultural Affairs are trying to make an effort to designate which works are also art that must be preserved. The proposed ordinance states,&nbsp;&quot;The owner of&nbsp;any building or&nbsp;structure that&nbsp;has art&nbsp;on it&nbsp;may voluntarily register with&nbsp;the&nbsp;department of streets and sanitation by filing a registration statement on a form provided by the&nbsp;department. The registration remains valid until the owner notifies the department to remove&nbsp;the building or structure from the registry provided for in this paragraph.&quot; The hope is also that a registry will then be&nbsp;publicly available on the DCASE web site&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;searchable with a mapping system.&nbsp;

The gallery will close at the end of 2018&nbsp;and reopen at 1637 W. Chicago Ave. just east of the galleries at 1709-11 W. Chicago.

&bull; Submissions for the artist-in-residence program at Fermilab&nbsp;are due&nbsp;Sept 1. Past residents have included&nbsp;Jim Jenkins, AIR 2017, and Lindsay Olson AIR 2015. &nbsp;

Fermilab is America&rsquo;s national laboratory dedicated to particle physics research. To initiate and stimulate communication and interactions among scientists, artists and the public, the laboratory has created an Artist-in-Residence program and seeks applications for the 2019 cycle. The Fermilab artist in residence will interact with scientists at the laboratory, learn about their research, see how it connects to society. Then use this information to create a body of work, leading to presentations in the community and possibly an exhibition of the artwork at Fermilab. A small stipend will be provided by the Fermi Research Alliance.

&bull; Northern Trust&nbsp;announced on July 9 that the&nbsp;Northern Trust Purchase Prize&nbsp;will be donated to the&nbsp;Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago&nbsp;during the seventh annual EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, (Sept. 27 &ndash; 30, 2018). As Presenting Sponsor of EXPO CHICAGO, Northern Trust, will purchase the annual gift of artwork from the EXPOSURE section of the exposition, for galleries eight years and younger.&nbsp;The selected artwork will be unveiled on&nbsp;September 28 at 12 p.m.&nbsp;on the Northern Trust Exchange Stage as part of the Exchange by Northern Trust:&nbsp;An Interactive Conversation Around the Art of Collecting&nbsp;program.

&bull; <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/institutions/mana-contemporary">Mana Contemporary</a><a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/institutions/mana-contemporary"> </a>announced on July 9&nbsp;a new residency program in partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). This yearlong residency will run August 1, 2018&ndash;August 1, 2019, and is designed to support the next generation of new media artists.

The first five residents, Cat Bluemke,&nbsp;Jenna Boyles,&nbsp;Minsun Cho,&nbsp;Morgan Green and&nbsp;Joo Young Lee,&nbsp;have been selected by the Mana curatorial team from a pool of graduating candidates nominated by the SAIC graduate department. The program supports interdisciplinary artists and aims to foster innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship in the field of new media. As part of the community-based residency, the artists will work together in a collective studio and engage the public through self-generated programming, workshops, and exhibitions. Mana&rsquo;s New Media Program&nbsp;initiative is dedicated to supporting the production and presentation of work that engages the intersection of art and technology.&nbsp;

&bull; <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/document">DOCUMENT</a>&nbsp;shared that&nbsp;Howardena Pindell&#39;s&nbsp;Video Drawings: Abstract (Fish Schooling), 1976 was recently acquired by Milwaukee Art Museum.&nbsp;Geraldo de Barros,&nbsp;Untitled (from Sobras Series), 1996-1998 and&nbsp;Untitled (from Sobras Series), 1996-1998 were recently acquired by The Art Institute of Chicago.&nbsp;

&bull; The Field Foundation of Illinois&nbsp;has awarded 3Arts a $25,000 grant to&nbsp;invest in Chicago&#39;s artists of color and their production of new art through the 3AP (3Arts Projects) program, a crowdfunding platform with a built-in match and behind-the-scenes training, video production, and coaching designed to help artists build serious momentum in their careers.

&nbsp;The Siragusa Foundation&nbsp;is partnering with 3Arts to support the one-of-a-kind&nbsp;Make a Wave&nbsp;artist-to-artist-giving program.&nbsp;With the Foundation&#39;s generous $10,000 contribution, every artist who receives a 3Arts Award will be invited to select another Chicago artist to receive a surprise $1,000 grant, sending a wave from artist to artist throughout our city.

Sabina Ott, artist, professor and local creative champion died at age 62. After a four-year battle with cancer, Ott passed away at home Tuesday, June 26. <h3>&bull; Art World Moves and&nbsp;Updates</h3>

<a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/art-services/leslie-hindman-auctioneers--3">Leslie Hindman Auctioneers </a>announced&nbsp;that the firm appointed Thomas Galbraith as Chief Executive Officer, effective June 4, 2018. He succeeds Hindman who founded the firm in 1982. The appointment follows a private equity investment that positions the firm for aggressive growth. 
&nbsp; 
Galbraith co-founded The Petraeus Group in 2010. The consulting firm has provided growth and start-up strategies to Steven Murphy &amp; Partners, Art Dubai, Paddle8,&nbsp;Arthena&nbsp;and numerous other luxury brands and VC firms. During this time, Galbraith also served as Managing Director of Paddle8 and prior to that as Director of Global Strategy for Artnet. He was most recently appointed interim CEO by the board of Twyla, a Google&nbsp;Ventures backed&nbsp;startup, tasked with repositioning the company towards a more profitable future.

Hindman will be stepping back from the day-to-day operations of the auction house and&nbsp;said,&nbsp;&ldquo;We are extremely excited to have Thomas join us as CEO. With his experience at the&nbsp;cross section&nbsp;of technology and&nbsp;art, and his reputation as a thought leader in the industry, we are poised for future expansion.&quot; Hindman will still serve as Chair of the firm&#39;s board.

Melanee Cooper Gallery, which was based in Chicago in River North&nbsp;until closing in 2009 when Cooper relocated to California,&nbsp;will be&nbsp;re-opening after a nine year hiatus. Cooper calls her return to her original gallery space at 740 N. Franklin Street &quot;serendipitous.&quot;&nbsp;Cooper is pleased to be among her old neighbors and plans a September 7 opening in conjunction with fellow River North galleries and the River North Design District.&nbsp;

<h3>&bull; Artist Awards and Exhibitions Elsewhere</h3>

Richard Gray Gallery artist and Stony Island Arts Bank founder&nbsp;Theaster Gates received&nbsp;the Kurt Schwitters Prize.&nbsp;The award ceremony took place on the occasion of&nbsp;Theaster Gates: Black Madonna&nbsp;opening at Sprengel Museum Hannover.&nbsp;Spanning across four European institutions,&nbsp;Black Madonna&nbsp;is a multi-part project that explores the history of the black woman and her image. Additionally Theaster Gates: Black Madonna&nbsp;at the Kunstmuseum Basel&nbsp;takes place in&nbsp;two of the museum&rsquo;s locations.&nbsp;

Ben Blount, whose exhibition Typecast is on view at <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/ben-blount-typecast">Aron Packer Projects</a> in the CGN office through July 28, has a billboard up on the 606 Trail at Kimball Ave. featuring his Make American Great Again art &ndash; read between the lines when you go by.&nbsp;

Artist&nbsp;Lynn Basa&nbsp;has received the largest public art commission in the history of the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods for&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wickerparkbucktown.com/art-around-wpb/future/one-big-thing-lynn-basa-s-workers-cottage/">Worker Cottage Parklet</a>, a sculptural installation that pays homage to the traditional Chicago &ldquo;worker cottages&rdquo; frequently found in working- and middle-class neighborhoods in the nineteenth century. The $80,000 commission was awarded to Basa by&nbsp;Wicker Park Bucktown Special Service Area #33, the neighborhood&rsquo;s business improvement district,&nbsp;after an extensive call for artists and jury process led by Chicago art professionals.

Basa&rsquo;s&nbsp;Worker Cottage Parklet&nbsp;will be installed by July 2018 at the highly visible intersection of Milwaukee Avenue and Wood Street in Wicker Park. The intersection was redesigned in 2014 by the Chicago Department of Transportation in collaboration with WPB SSA #33 and 1st Ward Alderman Joe Moreno, to create a safer transit environment and develop a location specifically for a future public artwork.

A giant silver hand by artist Kavi Gupta Gallery artist&nbsp;Tony Tasset&nbsp;is part of&nbsp;<a href="https://frontart.org">FRONT International Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art</a>. When finished, the 7-ton work will stand 21 feet high.&nbsp;FRONT will be held July 14&ndash;Sept. 30 at 18 venues and dozens of sites in downtown Cleveland, Ohio City, University Circle, Akron and Oberlin. <a href="http://www.chicagoartdepartment.org">Chicago Art Department</a> is excited to announce the pilot program for the&nbsp;Core Residency Program,&nbsp;an ambitious intervention in the field, one that will challenge&nbsp;artists, organizers, cultural producers to lead studio work, exhibitions, and public programs around topics that matter. 
 
Each of CAD&#39;s Core Residencies will come with the challenge of exploring inside a specific topic, and&nbsp;will be fully-funded with stipends and budgets to support professional development. Core Stipends will be $2000 per residency, which will include $500 to specifically support professional development enrolling in outside programs at organizations such as Hyde Park Art Center, Lillstreet Art Center, Spudnik Press, and Chicago Artists Coalition. Applications are due&nbsp;July&nbsp;8, 2018.

In the News: Updates from the CGN Art Community Vol. 2

By GINNY VAN ALYEAVeteran art dealer Roy Boyd passed away this morning, according to friend and long-time gallery artist Betty Cleeland.&nbsp;Boyd is&nbsp;survived by four sisters.Boyd's&nbsp;eponymous&nbsp;gallery, which he opened with his late wife Ann&nbsp;in 1972, closed in October 2014 after 42 years in business.&nbsp;Boyd served as president of the Chicago Art Dealers Association from 2003–2007, and the gallery participated in the original&nbsp;International Art Exposition at Navy Pier in the 1980s&nbsp;as well as Art Chicago and other international art fairs for many years.The Boyds opened Roy Boyd Gallery first&nbsp;in suburban Western Springs, before moving in 1976&nbsp;to downtown Chicago near the original site of the Museum of Contemporary Art&nbsp;(the museum opened in 1967 at 237 East Ontario). In 1979 they moved to West Superior Street to the second floor above Young Hoffman Gallery, along with&nbsp;Jack Lemon's&nbsp;Landfall Press. In a 2012 CGN interview&nbsp;Ann Boyd recalled, "It was a wonderful time. There was hardly any activity during the day, but people who came to see us came for a purpose. We were all feeling pressure to have higher ceilings, more space for art, more elbowroom during openings. Some artists thought we were crazy, until they&nbsp;saw the big spaces and recognized the sense of camraderie. Our insurance when we started was $1,500 a month because our agent thought all of our windows would be smashed." By 1983 16 galleries had opened in what would soon be known as River North.&nbsp;The gallery's ultimate home was at&nbsp;739 N. Wells, where the couple lived in an apartment above the gallery.&nbsp;Boyd&nbsp;opened a second location&nbsp;in Los Angeles from 1981–1993.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/2835/original/boyd30th-copy.jpg" alt=""><figcaption>Ann and Roy Boyd with friend Edward Albee (left)</figcaption></figure>Roy became a personal friend&nbsp;during my early years working at Chicago Gallery News and the Chicago Art Dealers Association&nbsp;with Natalie van Straaten, and he continued to be a great supporter&nbsp;throughout my first years as CGN&nbsp;publisher. He was good company, whether he was stopping by our old lower level office on Franklin&nbsp;for a CADA meeeting or just a long chat.One of my favorite memories is from one day in 2007, quite a while before the 2008 presidential election, when attention in town and around the country was growing around Barack Obama. The CGN office was still located &nbsp;at 730 N. Franklin, in the lower level of the Central Arts Building and&nbsp;underneath Andrew Bae Gallery. One of the other tenants in the building was&nbsp;David Axelrod, who was advising Obama at the time. Because his profile was still low, Obama would come to the building for meetings from time to time. One day, while Roy was on my couch for one of our usual chats, we noticed a large SUV pull-up outside the building entrance and saw Obama&nbsp;dash in with his security detail.&nbsp;Others&nbsp;noticed too and&nbsp;gathered to wait&nbsp;in growing numbers. After waiting long enough hoping to&nbsp;glimpse the state senator another time, Roy decided it was time to walk back to the gallery. Wearing his own signature all-black outfit and ball cap, Boyd opened the front door of the Central Arts Building and strode outside into the crowd, which in its frenzy to snap pictures of Obama, ended up with pictures instead of a friendly, but certainly not politically famous, local art dealer, smiling at his mistaken celebrity.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/chigal/rich/rich_files/rich_files/2836/original/roy2.jpg" alt=""></figure>Roy was always good for a joke and a laugh.&nbsp;His openings promoted and honored his artists and&nbsp;served as gatherings for many art world friends. The post-opening dinners he and Ann threw in their apartment above the gallery&nbsp;were a special chance to&nbsp;relax and connect with new friends and old while celebrating the artist of the evening.&nbsp;Boyd's gallery&nbsp;roster was packed with artists who worked primarily in abstraction. Many painted&nbsp;in&nbsp;vibrant colors and used bold textures, while other artists&nbsp;worked in sculpture using wood, or metal.&nbsp;Over the years represented and exhibited&nbsp;artists included, to name a few,&nbsp;William Conger, Sarah Krepp, Betty Cleeland, Roland Ginzel, Daniel Bodner, Jay Phillips, Joan Livingston, Carlos Estrada-Vega,&nbsp;Jerome Powers, Anne Wilson,&nbsp;Mark Arctander,&nbsp;Teo González, Dan Ramirez, Jay Kelly, John Fraser,&nbsp;Mario Trejo,&nbsp;Brigitte Riesebrodt,&nbsp;Buzz Spector, Joel Perlman,&nbsp;Vadim Katznelson, and Markus Linnenbrink. Many area collections began at the Boyds' gallery, as visitors were drawn in as much by the friendly and knowledgeable dealers&nbsp;as the accessible and appealing art.Roy and Ann kept things interesting for the gallery and for themselves until the end, as they continued to take on&nbsp;new artists whose art they just enjoyed and whose friendship they cherished. In 2013 to mark four decades in business,&nbsp;the Boyds let their artists take over the commeorative exhibition. At the time Boyd said,&nbsp;"We're going to just have a group show for our 40th anniversary. We're letting our artists submit their favorite old work, or they can submit something new. We just wanted to recognize the people we've worked so well with."Ann Boyd passed away in April 2013. Founding River North Dealer Roy Boyd Has Died

Artist and Columbia College Chicago professor Sabina Ott died today at age 62 following a hard-fought four year battle with cancer. A mentor as well as fun-loving friend to many, she is a creative force who is greatly missed.&nbsp;

Ott was born in New York City and&nbsp;raised in Los Angeles and received her BFA&nbsp;in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1979 before receiving an MFA in painting there in 1981. She made her way to the &quot;third coast&quot; in 2005 to&nbsp;serve&nbsp;as&nbsp;Chair of Art and Design at Columbia College Chicago and she called&nbsp;the city home from then on.&nbsp;

Exhibiting since 1985, Ott has participated in over 100 solo and group exhibitions at institutions in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Auckland, New Zealand; Melbourne, Australia; and many cities across the US. Her work is in numerous museum collections including The Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Oakland Museum of Art.&nbsp;In recent years&nbsp;she completed a public art commission for the Chicago Transit Authority and a solo exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center.&nbsp;

In 2011&nbsp;she founded <a href="https://www.terrainexhibitions.com">Terrain Exhibitions</a> with her husband&nbsp;John Paulett, an author&nbsp;and educator. Terrain is&nbsp;a public exhibition space &ndash; Ott&#39;s front lawn &ndash;&nbsp;in suburban Oak Park&nbsp;dedicated to featuring interventions into the conventional landscape of a front yard by emerging as well as established artists who have been invited to create a site-specific work that challenges the space between public and private, decoration and function, figure and ground. Artworks are intended to be accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.&nbsp;

In 2016, Ott constructed a massive,&nbsp;scalable installation of polystyrene, plywood, industrial spray foam and paint for an exhibition, Who Cares for the Sky?, at the <a href="http://www.hydeparkart.org/exhibition-archive/sabina-ott-who-cares-for-the-sky/?_sf_s=sabina">Hyde Park Art Center</a>. A version of the work, Because the mountains were so high,&nbsp;was recreated for a special project at EXPO Chicago that same year. CGN&#39;s Franck Mercurio wrote <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2016/9/local-artists-create-immersive-environments-at-expo-chicago">about the work</a> as Ott was putting the finishing touches on it:

&quot;Walking through Sabina Ott&rsquo;s grotto-like installation,&nbsp;because the mountains were so high, I ran into the artist herself as she applied finishing touches of white paint to the work&rsquo;s polystyrene and spray foam walls.

&#39;It&rsquo;s not quite done yet,&#39; she said matter-of-factly.

&quot;Ott had borrowed a security guard&rsquo;s stool, using it as an improvised ladder while she touched-up the edges of a video monitor embedded into one of the installation&rsquo;s walls. The Thursday afternoon crowd of art collectors and journalists had just begun to filter through EXPO Chicago&rsquo;s maze of booths. Some people ventured into Ott&rsquo;s installation as the artist continued to work.

&#39;I think I hear my gallerist,&#39;&nbsp;said Ott, as Jefferson Godard of Aspect/Ratio appeared from around the corner.

The Randolph Street Market kicked off its summer outdoor season last weekend, and it also marked its 15th anniversary. Located at Plumbers Hall at 1341 W. Randolph, when the market first opened in 2003 the West Loop was not the hot spot it is today. Co-founded by Sally Schwartz and former partner Kathleen Finley, the market,&nbsp;formerly known as Chicago Antique Market, now features more than&nbsp;300 vendors in the summer&nbsp;months. Driehaus Museum turns 10 years old this June.&nbsp;In celebration of its milestone tenth anniversary&nbsp;The&nbsp;Museum will reduce regular priced adult admission to $10, from $20, for the weekend of June 8. <a href="http://moniquemeloche.com">Monique Meloche Gallery</a>, which was previously located at 2154&nbsp;W. Division has moved to 451 North Paulina in West Town. The gallery&#39;s&nbsp;inaugural exhibition&nbsp;Jeff Sonhouse:&nbsp;Entrapment&nbsp;opens&nbsp;Saturday, June 9.

Nan Goggin has been named dean of the&nbsp;<a href="https://herron.iupui.edu/index.html">Herron School of Art and Design</a>&nbsp;at IUPUI in Indianapolis effective July 1, subject to approval by the IU Board of Trustees. Goggin previously served as the director of the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois.

<a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/andrew-bae-gallery">Andrew Bae Gallery </a>announced representation of artist&nbsp;Dabin Ahn, who&nbsp;graduated from&nbsp;SAIC in 201. Ahn will have his first solo show at the gallery&nbsp;on July 13. He is also returning to SAIC to enter the&nbsp;MFA program this fall.&nbsp; 
Ahn, born in Korea,&nbsp;is the first new artist the gallery has added to its roster in 13 years.&nbsp;

New Mexico-based visual artist&nbsp;Holly&nbsp;Roberts, known for her technique of combining digital images with paint, will now be represented by <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/schneider-gallery">Schneider Gallery</a> in River North. Much of Roberts&rsquo; thought-provoking work draws from her roots in the Southwest, which holds strong Native American cultural influence.&nbsp;

This May, a cast of&nbsp;M&aacute;ximo,&nbsp;the largest dinosaur ever discovered, is coming to <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/institutions/field-museum-of-natural-history">The&nbsp;Field Museum</a>.&nbsp;The name, Spanish for &ldquo;maximum&rdquo; or &ldquo;most,&rdquo; is a nod to the titanosaur&rsquo;s enormous size and Argentinian homeland. M&aacute;ximo is 122 feet from head to tail, longer than two accordion CTA buses end-to-end, and his head will peek over the museum&rsquo;s second floor balcony.

The participants in the upcoming fourth annual <a href="https://rivernorthdesigndistrict.com">River North Design District&nbsp;Fall Gallery Walk</a> have been announced. The popular walk is expanding this year to include 12 River North art galleries. Each participting design showroom will&nbsp;exhibit&nbsp;vignettes from Chicago&rsquo;s top designers as they showcase living settings with artwork by contemporary artists. EXPO CHICAGO announced its list of 135 participating galleries for its seventh edition, its most globlal to date. The fair&#39;s dates are also a little later than usual, September 27-30, 2018,&nbsp;due to the fall holidays. The Other Art Fair, presented by&nbsp;online art gallery&nbsp;Saatchi Art, is coming to Chicago September 28-30&nbsp;and is timed to coincide with EXPO Chicago. TOAF showcases work by 130 talented independent and emerging artists and&nbsp;will take place at Mana Contemporary. Richard Gray has died at age 89. He passed away yesterday at home in Chicago.

Gray&nbsp;founded<a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/galleries/richard-gray-gallery--2">&nbsp;The Richard Gray Gallery</a> on November 4, 1963, at 155 E. Ontario. Today the gallery, which includes a location in the John Hancock Center downtown and a West Side Warehouse venue, as well as a Madison Avenue space in New York,&nbsp;will continue under the leadership&nbsp;of Gray&#39;s son Paul, and partners Andrew Fabricant and Valerie Carberry.&nbsp;

As of 2012 the&nbsp;gallery&rsquo;s sales were just under $100 million, and&nbsp;clients included&nbsp;more than 10 percent of the Forbes 400 list, including nine members from the Chicago area, as well as&nbsp;collectors and museum curators from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.

The gallery started out modestly in the early 1960s.&nbsp;With&nbsp;a&nbsp;young family at home&nbsp;at the time, Gray had&nbsp;been looking for a new career after working for his father&#39;s construction business for several years. Gray&#39;s wife Mary Kay Lackritz&nbsp;grew up in a family of art collectors, and Gray, who was trained as an architect, was inspired to follow his own passion for art and open a gallery that would allow him to make a personal passion into a profession.

Eventually the gallery occupied&nbsp;620 N. Michigan Ave. for nearly 30 years, before moving in 1995 to the 25th floor of&nbsp;875 N. Michigan in the John Hancock Center, and today the 38th floor.&nbsp;Gray Warehouse opened in April 2017 at&nbsp;2044 W. Carroll in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor in West Town.&nbsp;

According to Natalie van Straaten, founding publisher of Chicago Gallery News and former Executive Director&nbsp;of the Chicago Art Dealers Association (CADA), &quot;Richard Gray was not only recognized and respected&nbsp;in the international art world, but he also helped transform the Chicago art gallery world with vision, guidance and generosity.&nbsp;He was a mentor and model of integrity&nbsp;for other dealers; his encouragement of establishing the CADA, as well as the first international art exposition in Chicag, helped put our city on the map.&nbsp;His gallery&rsquo;s exhibitions of extraordinary artists brought greatness to the city (including Jaume Plensa to the Crown Fountain) and his philanthropy went well beyond the visual arts and the cultural life of Chicago.&quot;

Gray helped found the CADA in 1967 and was one of its early presidents (1967&ndash;1975). He was elected president of the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) in 1998, notably the first dealer based outside of New York to hold the position. He served on the board of the Art Institute of Chicago, where&nbsp;an extensive collection of prints and drawings collected by Gray and his wife Mary are shown. He was also a passionate supporter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestr, The Chicago Humanities Festival, and the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. A&nbsp;center for artistic and scholarly collaboration, the&nbsp;Richard and Mary L. Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry, opened on the campus of the University of Chicago&nbsp;in 2013.&nbsp;

In a 2013 interview with CGN Gray recalled,&nbsp;&ldquo;Maybe because of my architecture background, I had a particular interest in draftsmanship, prints and drawings.&nbsp;When I opened the gallery, I had the idea that I&rsquo;d be handling that kind of thing, and that&rsquo;s what happened. I started out by representing established and emerging artists primarily working on paper.&rdquo;

Gray&#39;s reach continued to expand, and he&nbsp;went on to sell art&nbsp;in a range of mediums by such well known artists as&nbsp;Jules Olitski, Morris Louis, Louise Nevelson, Hans Hofmann, Fernand L&eacute;ger and Jim Dine.&nbsp;The gallery roster continued to grow over the decades to feature David&nbsp;Hockney, Josef Albers, Joseph Cornell, Richard Diebenkorn, Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, Roy Lichtenstein, Agnes Martin, Henry Moore, Robert Motherwell, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol, among many others. Gray also significantly represented&nbsp;aboriginal and African art.

&ldquo;My standards were about trusting my own eye, my own sense of aesthetics,&rdquo; Gray recalled. &ldquo;It wasn&rsquo;t the particular style or period that interested me; it was the individual work of art.&rdquo;&nbsp;

&ldquo;They were the best gallery in Chicago, as far as I was concerned,&rdquo; said artist Jim Dine in 2013, still one of the Grays&rsquo; most-shown artists. &ldquo;Richard has a tremendous eye and a great world view, and he was really the only truly international gallery in Chicago for a long time. I was very pleased to be there.&rdquo;&nbsp;

van Straaten said, &quot;[Richard] will be missed, but what a great legacy he left for Chicago.&quot;

Chicago Art Dealer and Pioneer Richard Gray Has Died at 89

Art Shay, a Chicago-based photographer whose iconic images are known around the world, died Saturday, April 28 in Deerfield at age 96.&nbsp;

Shay&#39;s photography career spanned 70 years, during which he risked his life capturing tragic images of fighting during&nbsp;WWII, and he created images of the Civil Rights movement that revealed to the world people&#39;s struggles and triumphs.&nbsp;

Shay memorialized&nbsp;celebrities and famous figures&nbsp;like Elizabeth Taylor, Simone de Beauvoir, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Algren, among&nbsp;others, and he got inside Hugh Hefner&#39;s Playboy mansion to capture socializing bunnies and their guests. He worked for LIFE, Time,&nbsp;Sports Illustrated and many other publications. And Shay&nbsp;was on the ground during the tumultous Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1968, reportedly geting maced in the process.

Shay was prolific during his long life and career, and he was admired around the world, but especially in Chicago where he made his home. In 2015 the Musuem of Contemporary Photography gave Shay the Silver Camera award in honor of his important work.&nbsp;

A show of his photographs opens this Friday, May 4 as part of <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/calendar/art-shay-writers-and-freedom-fighters">Writers and Freedom Fighters</a>&nbsp;at Gallery Victor Armendariz in River North. Shay was previously represented by friend and long-time dealer Ann Nathan.&nbsp;

Photographer Art Shay Dies

Chicago-based arts writer and School of the Art Institute professor&nbsp;James Yood died yesterday, April 21. He was born in 1952 and received a BA in 1974 from the University of Wisconsin, and received his MA in 1976 and was a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago. He most recently taught Art History, and Theory and Criticism at SAIC and headed the school&#39;s&nbsp;New Arts Journalism program. He also taught at Northwestern University.

Yood was very well known and admired throghout the Chicago and national art community. &nbsp;He wrote for&nbsp;Artforum;&nbsp;GLASS; art ltd; and&nbsp;Visual Art Source.&nbsp;He wrote several books, including&nbsp;Gladys Nilsson;&nbsp;Spirited Visions: Portraits of Chicago Artists, and&nbsp;Second Sight: Printmaking in Chicago 1935-95. Yood was also the Chicago managing editor of the&nbsp;New Art Examiner, which led to writing to Artforum and other international publications.&nbsp;

Yood spent his career sharing Chicago art and artists with the world. He&nbsp;challenged artists&nbsp;to look at their own art more critically in order to strengthen&nbsp;their work and&nbsp;gain broader attention around the country.&nbsp;

Artforum&#39;s tribute to Yood&nbsp;referenced&nbsp;an early&nbsp;essay&nbsp;for the New Art Examiner, which&nbsp;they cite to as a turning point for his own wider recognition: &quot;[Yood]&nbsp;challenged a local trend of exhibiting group shows of &ldquo;emerging&quot; artists: &#39;It would be, quite simply, impossible to gauge trends in Chicago art by the work of these emergent artists, besides noting that young artists are the same everywhere: anything goes,&#39;&nbsp;he mused. &#39;Perhaps part of the cosmopolitanization of Chicago will be the loss of what some see as its idiosyncratic and fussy style.&#39;&nbsp;The piece made an impression, and soon after it was published in 1986, he began reviewing for national and international outlets like&nbsp;Artforum&nbsp;and&nbsp;Aperture.&quot;

In an interview by Tom Burtonwood for <a href="http://www.chicagoartistsresource.org/artist-stories/james-yood-contemporary-art-critic-and-essayist">Chicago Artists Resource</a> in 2008, Yood said, when asked what critics contribute to the arts community, &quot;We&#39;re part of the mix&mdash;along with artists, dealers, curators, and collectors&mdash;that in the aggregate help create the context of contemporary art. We can help conversations get started, and (sorry if this sound pretentious!), we&#39;re part of the peer group that begins the process of evaluation, of historical reckoning. It&#39;s an awkward process, sometimes painful and unfair, and sometimes altered by subsequent events. But it&#39;s the system that has evolved steadily over the last two centuries, that artists create art and then it leaves the studio and enters the world where it becomes a commodity, both financially and intellectually, that gets picked at and assessed, consumed in a way by its diverse audiences. I&#39;m part of that audience, with the astounding good fortune that some art magazines, etc., are willing to let me think out loud, so to speak, about what I see.&quot;

Art Critic and SAIC Professor James Yood Dies

Yesterday at the Art Institute of Chicago, some very generous donors made it&nbsp;rain. Well, it was actually sunny outside, finally, but inside there was news of some mega donations being made by members of the museum&#39;s board of trustees. Following is the press release shared by the Art Institute. The two significant gifts were cultivated by president James Rondeau, ensuring&nbsp;strength and development for the museum for years to come. &ndash;GV

The Art Institute of Chicago announced today a $50 million unrestricted gift from Janet and Craig Duchossois and a $20 million gift from Robert and Diane v.S. Levy for acquisitions and operations. These historic gifts advance the museum&rsquo;s civic mission and enable bold planning for the future.&nbsp;

&ldquo;It is an honor to work with trustees whose foresight and generosity will shape the museum&rsquo;s impact on our community for generations to come,&rdquo; said James Rondeau, President and Eloise W. Martin Director. &ldquo;Gifts such as these allow the museum to look forward with certainty and ambition, serving our city as one of the world&rsquo;s greatest art museums.&rdquo; 
 
Janet Duchossois shared, &ldquo;Craig and I chose to make this unrestricted gift to demonstrate our confidence and support of James Rondeau and the board. We are proud to be partners in their strategy and approach for the museum both today and in the future.&rdquo;&nbsp; 
 
A Voting Trustee of the Art Institute Board of Trustees, Janet Duchossois is also Chair of the museum&rsquo;s Sustaining Fellows. She serves as Co-Chair of the Committee on Libraries and is a member of the committees on Modern and Contemporary Art and Prints and Drawings. Craig Duchossois is CEO of The Duchossois Group, a privately held, family-owned company with holdings in the consumer products, technology, and service sectors. He is Vice Chair of the boards of the University of Chicago Medical Center and the Illinois Institute of Technology, and serves on the boards of the University of Chicago, the Culver Educational Foundation, World Business Chicago, and the Executives&rsquo; Club of Chicago 
 
Robert Levy is in his second term as Chair of the Art Institute&rsquo;s Board of Trustees. He is a retired partner, chairman, and chief investment officer for U.S. Equities at Harris Associates L.P. Mr. Levy is vice chair of the board at the University of Pennsylvania and chairs The Power of Penn campaign. He also serves as president of the Robert M. Levy and Diane v.S. Levy Family Foundation, which he founded with his wife, Diane von Schlegell Levy. Diane v.S. Levy is currently a member of the Art Institute&rsquo;s committees on Textiles, European Decorative Arts, and Ancient and Byzantine Arts. Mrs. Levy is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Field Museum, the Board of Directors of Chicago Botanic Garden, and served on the Board of Overseers of the Penn Museum for 10 years.

A Very Good Day for the Art Institute of Chicago

<a href="https://www.expochicago.com">EXPO CHICAGO</a> gets closer every day, and the closer it gets, the more this upcoming edition takes shape. &nbsp;As is typical of the fair, they continue to build their programming lineup and to expand their international ties.&nbsp;

Yesterday the art fair announced that for its seventh annual exhibition, taking place again on Navy Pier&nbsp;September 27&ndash;30, 2018, they are&nbsp;rolling&nbsp;out some major&nbsp;programmatic expansions here at home as well as in Europe.&nbsp;The biggest announcement was about an&nbsp;onsite panel and performance at the&nbsp;U.S. Pavilion&nbsp;of the&nbsp;16th Architecture Biennale in Venice, Italy. Participants from Chicago will include Niall Atkinson, Ann Lui, and Mimi Zeiger of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago, panelists Amanda Williams,&nbsp;Andres L. Hernandez,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Shani Crowe and&nbsp;moderator&nbsp;Stephanie Cristello,&nbsp;EXPO CHICAGO Director of Programming and Editor-in-Chief of&nbsp;THE SEEN.

They also trumpeted&nbsp;the third annual /Dialogues Symposium,&nbsp;Present Histories: Art &amp; Design in Chicago, that will address&nbsp;select art and design legacies produced in the city and take&nbsp;place during EXPO CHICAGO in conjunction with the&nbsp;Terra Foundation for American Art&rsquo;s initiative&nbsp;Art Design Chicago, presented in partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Their vision,&nbsp;Dimensions of Citizenship, will challenge architects, designers, artists, and critics to respond to transformative modes of belonging at radically different scales, from the citizen to the cosmos.&nbsp;EXPO CHICAGO will partner with SAIC and the University of Chicago to&nbsp;present a program as part&nbsp;of the official Vernissage for the U.S. Pavilion on&nbsp;Sunday, May 27, 2018.

EXPO CHICAGO Announces 2018 Programmatic Expansion

After 15 years on North Peoria in the West Loop, and over 40 years in the art business,&nbsp;Rhona Hoffman Gallery has relocated to 1711 W. Chicago Ave. in West Town, joining a growing group of galleries who have moved for more affordable rent and to be part of an emerging gallery community. Hoffman&#39;s inaugural exhibition in the new space,&nbsp;Judy Ledgerwood: Far From The Tree, opens Friday, April 6 and runs through May 19. This is the artist&#39;s fifth solo show with the gallery.&nbsp;

Three years ago, Hoffman signed her last lease in the West Loop. Since then, the surrounding neighborhood, and its price per square foot,&nbsp;changed rapidly, spurring the consideration of a major move instead of closing the doors.&nbsp;

Hoffman told CGN on Thursday, &quot;The exhibition of Judy Ledgerwood&#39;s unbelievably beautiful, color-filled paintings make us even more excited to show the public our new gallery space designed by John Vinci.&quot;

Ledgerwood is known for using bright colors in her paintings and experimenting with various textures and patterns. According to the gallery&#39;s show description, &quot;The visual pleasure, luminosity, and optical stimulation primary in Judy Ledgerwood&rsquo;s new paintings are hinged upon their embedded conceptual complexity. For over thirty years the Chicago-based painter has been dismantling the canon of Abstract Painting from within by using disruptive color combinations, deconstructing the minimal / conceptual grid, and employing decidedly feminine forms.

Maximalist color and provocative shapes are primary agents in Judy Ledgerwood&rsquo;s engagement with historical painting.&nbsp;Whether interrupting rich blues with unexpected green, orange, and yellows in&nbsp;Tiny Dancer&nbsp;or combining glowing orange with translucent mustard browns in&nbsp;Sheela,&nbsp;Judy Ledgerwood always provokes viewers to extend beyond complacent enjoyment and actively engage with looking.&nbsp;In&nbsp;Hopscotch Chelsea Rose&nbsp;and&nbsp;Drunkard&rsquo;s Path,&nbsp;quilting patterns serve&nbsp;as the instrument to organize Ledgerwood&rsquo;s characteristic chevron and quatrefoil matrix.&nbsp;

In&nbsp;Far From The Tree,&nbsp;Judy Ledgerwood&rsquo;s signature shapes are augmented with circles, diamonds, chevrons, and seed-like forms associated with Paleolithic and Neolithic goddesses. The artist refers to these shapes as &ldquo;ciphers of feminine power&rdquo; - rooted in the generative, flexible Yonic form. Manipulating the grid, shape, and color of large-scale contemporary painting, Ledgerwood shatters the canon from within to create a distinct, feminist painting voice.

Last month the John Toomey Gallery announced a generational succession as well as a name change.&nbsp;According to the press release, after&nbsp;three decades John Toomey Gallery&nbsp;has been a leading specialty auction house and private seller, and it is now known as <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/art-services/toomey-co-auctioneers">Toomey &amp; Co. Auctioneers</a>, marking a new era for a company that, since 1987, has built a reputation of integrity and of being well equipped to compete with large, global auction houses. &nbsp;&nbsp;

John Toomey will assume the role of a hands-on consultant for Toomey &amp; Co. Auctioneers, while turning over the company&rsquo;s management to Lucy Toomey, formerly Senior Vice President, who will now serve as CEO.&nbsp;

&ldquo;Times change and the industry progresses, and it&rsquo;s important that we evolve and adapt to meet the demands of our business as it is today,&rdquo; said John Toomey. &ldquo;The past 30 years have been fantastic, and it&rsquo;s time for the next generation to expand their role. The second edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial just wrapped up a few weeks ago, but plans are already very much underway for the next edition, opening in fall 2019. Today the Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) and Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the appointment of&nbsp;Yesomi Umolu,&nbsp;Exhibitions Curator at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago,&nbsp;as the 2019 Artistic Director.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ms. Umolu brings years of experience and expertise in contemporary art with a particular curatorial focus on "spatial practices" to her initial training in the field of architecture. Together these experiences and insights bring a unique vision to the third Biennial.&nbsp;With a background in architectural design and curatorial studies, Umolu focuses her work on global contemporary art and spatial practices. Her recent projectshave explored the politics of the built environment. Umolu currently holds the position of Exhibitions Curator at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago, and is a visiting lecturer, critic, and speaker at a number of international universities and institutions.“I am honored to be invited to serve as Artistic Director of the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial,” said Umolu. “Having my roots in the field of architecture, spatial questions have always been an important consideration of my work with contemporary artists, architects, and urbanists from across the world. Yesomi Umolu named 2019 Artistic Director of Chicago Architecture Biennial

Curator Yesomi Umolu Named Artistic Director of 3rd Chicago Architecture Biennial 

On a sun-filled late winter Sunday,&nbsp;Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and theMART (the building&nbsp;formerly known as The Merchandise Mart)&nbsp;to propose something that will put public art in an entirely new light.

The Mayor announced&nbsp;Art on theMart, a permanent large-scale lighting installation that will come to Chicago for the foreseeable future, starting this fall. The art will project across nearly three acres of the southern facing fa&ccedil;ade of theMART. The building, which includes more than four million square feet behind that facade, was once the biggest in the world.

&ldquo;Large, temporary projections have been done around the world, but the permanency and size of Art on theMART will provide a canvas for art to evolve and thrive,&rdquo; said Myron Maurer, Chief Operating Officer, theMART.&nbsp;Similar displays have been projected on&nbsp;the Sydney Opera House and at St. Peter&rsquo;s Basilica.

Following the popularity of Chicago&#39;s Riverwalk, as well as 2017&#39;s Year of Public Art, the Mayor said,&nbsp;&ldquo;Iconic art and cultural programming on the Riverwalk has always been&nbsp;inherent and integral in helping us embrace the river as the city&rsquo;s newest recreational frontier,&rdquo; said Mayor Emanuel. &ldquo;Art on theMart&nbsp;will be a visionary project that brings new energy to the Riverwalk, while strengthening Chicago&rsquo;s legacy of public art.&rdquo; One can imagine it will also make the river a vibrant destination beyond the summer months.&nbsp;The City and theMART will enter into a 30-year agreement to facilitate the project pending City Council approval.&nbsp; 
 
The installation project, privately funded by Vornado Realty Trust, is slated for a fall 2018 completion. The funding means that the projections will not be branded or feature sponsorships; they will totally feature art.

In 2017, theMART, engaged creative studio Obscura Digital and the Chicago based architectural firm Valerio Dewalt Train, to develop a feasibility study for projecting art on the south, river-facing facade of theMART. Obscura Digital&nbsp;is the foremost design engineer of large projection installations with the technical and design skills capable of developing architectural images at this scale. 
&nbsp; 
Said Myron Maurer, Chief Operating Officer of theMART,&nbsp;&ldquo;As one of Chicago&rsquo;s most prominent buildings, theMART has been part of the city&rsquo;s history since the 1930s.&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;will further cement Chicago&rsquo;s reputation as a dedicated champion for iconic public art.&rdquo;

As the public face of the Mart changes, from a center of commerce and design trade to one much more closely linked with a digital and technology future.

Art on theMART&nbsp;marks the first time a projection of its size and scope will be completely dedicated to art projection with no branding, sponsorship credits, or messaging allowed.&nbsp;It will be a curated, ongoing series of ever-changing installations that will begin after dusk for pedestrians and residents to enjoy. The City and theMART will be working in partnership in the management and ongoing curation of the projected art work.

&ldquo;We&rsquo;re eager to welcome&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;into the pantheon of iconic public artworks in Chicago,&rdquo; said Mark Kelly, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. &ldquo;This installation is a result of Chicago&rsquo;s first Public Art Plan and has the potential to be as impactful as Cloud Gate and the Picasso, two public art works which have transformed how we see and experience our city.&rdquo;

In 2017, the City of Chicago celebrated the &quot;Year of Public Art&quot; which culminated with hundreds of new works of public art throughout the city and the creation of Chicago&rsquo;s first Public Art Plan. The new plan is a blueprint that will help shape the future of public art in Chicago and shift how we interact, talk about and support works of art that can be viewed by all. As part of the plan, the City of Chicago explored options for siting more public art throughout the city and&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;is a result of those efforts.&nbsp;Art on theMART&nbsp;exemplifies the city&rsquo;s commitment to infusing arts and culture throughout its neighborhoods for all residents and visitors to enjoy, and is a key driver of the rising tourism numbers and last year&rsquo;s record-setting 55.2 million visitors from across the globe.&nbsp;

Art on theMART&nbsp;will be dedicated to public digital art, providing Chicago residents and visitors with an enhanced public art experience. theMART and the City of Chicago, through its Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, will establish a selective process for identifying local, national and international artists and their work to be included in immersive gallery shows, which will include both static and moving imagery. Additionally, partnerships with city museums and art institutions will showcase the best of Chicago and celebrate the incredible artistic culture of the city.

The&nbsp;Chicago Riverwalk&nbsp;is presented by the City of Chicago with programming produced by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Fleet and Facility Management, Choose Chicago, the Chicago Park District and the vendors and boat tour operators along the Riverwalk.

theMART is interwoven into the fabric of Chicago as an innovator in culture, art, business, fashion, media and more. theMART is the world&rsquo;s largest commercial building, wholesale design center and one of Chicago&rsquo;s premier international business locations. Encompassing 4.2 million gross square feet, theMART spans two city blocks and rises 25 stories, and is visited by an average of 30,000 people each business day; in total, nearly 10 million people visit theMART each year.&nbsp;

Public Art in Chicago is About to Get Really Big

This past week, the&nbsp;Winter Olympic began in PyeongChang, South Korea. During the opening ceremony&nbsp;art&nbsp;by a Korean artist, who is represented by&nbsp;a local Chicago gallery, was on view for the world.&nbsp;

Chicago dealer&nbsp;Andrew Bae announced that Andrew Bae Gallery&nbsp;artist&nbsp;Dr. Keysook Geum had the honor of designing the dresses and uniforms for the Pyeongchang Olympics opening ceremony. Geum&#39;s works are well-known to gallery patrons and passersby in River North, as her delicate, actually wearable&nbsp;creations are frequently hung in the gallery&#39;s street-side windows at the corner of Franklin and Superior Streets.&nbsp;

Bae&nbsp;shared that he is&nbsp;truly excited for the artist and that, &quot;Indeed, my favorite part of being a gallery owner is showcasing and discussing art with visitors and patrons.&quot; Seeing these works in person is a delight - during past openings the works have been modeled and worn around the gallery. Seeing them worn on an international stage was something else.

Bae came to America from Korea&nbsp;at the age&nbsp;23, and the&nbsp;gallery&#39;s program features a&nbsp;group of select artists from Korea and Japan. ABG has been representing Keysook Geum for 17 years. The artist&nbsp;was invited to give a lecture to the students of the School of the Art Institute&#39;s&nbsp;Fashion Department in 2015. Her next&nbsp;solo show at the gallery is scheduled for&nbsp;November 2018.&nbsp;

Yesterday the Chicago Artists Coalition formally announced that they are moving the CAC to&nbsp;a new location at 2130-40 West Fulton Street in the dynamic Kinzie Industrial Corridor in spring 2018. CAC will be neighbors with Gray Warehouse, which moved to 2044 W Carroll in April 2017. They will also be near Spudnik Press and Linc Thelen Gallery, as well as&nbsp;Filter Photo and other tenants at&nbsp;Hubbard Street Lofts, 1821 W Hubbard.&nbsp;The new location will occupy 6,286 sq. ft. of a 55,000 sq. ft. building, providing CAC with the option to grow its footprint over time.&nbsp; The <a href="https://www.chicagogallerynews.com/news/2014/6/chicago-artists-coalition-takes-a-bite-out-of-40">44-year-old</a>, non-profit organization has been at its current West Loop/Fulton Market&nbsp;location at 217 North Carpenter for the past seven years.“We have truly appreciated the community support that we received at our current building in the Fulton Market District,” said CAC Executive Director, Caroline Older.&nbsp; “As we continue to grow, the new location just west of the District will provide benefits that will allow us to serve an even wider community and to be more easily accessed by those we serve.” CAC’s new space will be customized to create a unique arts center for both the artists that CAC serves and the public. Improvements include a single-floor layout that will be ADA accessible, a dedicated education space, and enhanced artist studios and galleries. The location also provides easy access from downtown and the highways, and is close to the new Damen Avenue CTA “L” stop slated to open in 2020. Partners on the&nbsp;project include Larry Serota of commercial real estate firm,&nbsp;Transwestern, architect&nbsp;Ware Malcomb, general contractor&nbsp;Braun Renovation Management, and building owner&nbsp;EverWest Real Estate Partners, LLC. The buildout of the space will begin in March 2018, with CAC moving in June 2018. One of the first looks at the space will take place on June 7, when CAC welcomes guests to its annual benefit gala,&nbsp;WORK IN PROGRESS, at the new location. CAC is grateful to the Arts &amp; Culture Loan Fund, a program of the&nbsp;John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which provides small and medium-sized arts and culture organizations with loans to address cash flow needs.
