2025 Art Theory and Practice MFA Thesis Exhibition

New Orleans: A Personal Perspective.&nbsp;&nbsp;All cities are unique, instantly recognizable by anyone who has lived in or visited one of them. And yet New Orleans stands out for a number of reasons. Most notably because it is an island of diversity surrounded by a Southern ethos that disdains outliers, rejects joie de vivre, and limits personal freedoms. It is a city filled with music and food and dancing in the streets. Little is off limits and the alcohol flows with abandon while the blues pours out the doorways of hundreds of dim and dingy bars.There is also an intrinsic age to New Orleans, an age that is difficult to find anywhere else in North America. A place where the Choctaw gathered for thousands of years to trade along the shores of the mighty Mississippi, where people’s souls were enslaved and traded, where immigrants found safety, except for some whose lives ended by swinging from a tree. Where current businesses flourish in buildings constructed 300 years ago and where jazz was born.Over the past 25 years Tobin and wife, Rachel, have been visiting this extraordinary city, sometimes with camera in hand and sometimes without. The photographs exhibited are based on a very personal experience of New Orleans, capturing the play of light and shadow on the buildings and reflections in the ever-present water that permeates the entirety of the city. The images also encompass the human character that epitomizes the essence of New Orleans.About Perspective gallery:&nbsp;Founded in 2010, Perspective Group and Photography Gallery is a not-for-profit community-oriented cooperative of fine art photographers whose purpose is to promote fine art photography. The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to our upcoming exhibition,&nbsp;Friends of Dorothy’s, curated by Emma Rose Gudewicz.&nbsp;The exhibition will be on display from&nbsp;May 24 - June 29, 2025, and will be free and open to the public.&nbsp;Friends of Dorothy’s&nbsp;examines what it is to be queer today, underscoring the artists’ individual experience with queerness. This exhibition seeks to uplift and highlight LGBTQIA+ voices in an uncertain world.The exhibition title&nbsp;Friends of Dorothy’s&nbsp;derives from queer slang in the mid-20th century. At a time when homosexuality was criminalized, many queer individuals used coded language to identify one another safely in public. "Are you a friend of Dorothy?" was a discreet inquiry from one queer individual to another that didn’t risk revealing a queer person’s identity to potentially dangerous people.&nbsp;Amid the regression of societal acceptance and understanding, we reflect on historical queer communities—their unity and resilience—and how their experiences shape the spaces we create today.

The focus of the&nbsp;Portraits With Impact&nbsp;Exhibition is on original paintings which reflect&nbsp;diverse range of personalities. The portrait genre enables artists to create work that resonates on a visual and emotional level, and ultimately invites reflection, sparks dialogue, and fosters a deeper connection. See unique paintings by local artists of historically-relevant individuals: Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Malala, and more. The individual sitters’ personalities are communicated through visual elements such as symbolic color, patterns, abstract shapes and brush strokes. Such design elements have the power to evoke moods that words often cannot express. The portraits, juror Joanna Pinsky, convey emotional responses and disrupt conventions. Brush &amp; Chisel showcases the work of two local artists: a painter and a sculptor.Brad Purse, a former Advertising Art Director, has embraced oil painting after leaving the advertising world. His paintings are surreal and often incorporate elements of humor and irony, inviting viewers to look deeper into each scene. Purse seeks subjects that offer unusual interpretations of familiar visual elements, aiming to create intriguing images using both oil paint and occasional graphite. His work often features a humorous or observational twist, representing a unique perspective on everyday norms.Brad Cahill is a sculptor who works primarily in stone. He is presenting his series, "One Lone Drone" in this gallery show. This series draws a comparison between the occupants of a typical office environment and those of a hive or colony. While some of their actions are obvious, much of their busyness can seem baffling and inexplicable, even to themselves. As a collective entity, workers are agents of production, contributing to the growth and success of a larger structure, while their individual identities and purposes often remain hidden. Cahill's therianthropic statues aim to reveal the personalities of anonymous characters and to elevate otherwise insignificant beings.Fine Line will hold an opening reception on Thursday, June 12, from 6 to 8 PM, with both artists in attendance. This winter, The Block will celebrate the region’s Indigenous creativity with a major exhibition,&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://northwestern.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=904f932038284b4d9eea69636&amp;id=c2e23bace0&amp;e=64540e863b" target="_blank">Woven Being: Art for Zhegagoynak/Chicagoland</a> Through the collaboration of four artists with connections to Zhegagoynak—Andrea Carlson&nbsp;(Grand Portage Ojibwe/European descent),&nbsp;Kelly Church(Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Tribe of Pottawatomi/Ottawa),&nbsp;Nora Moore Lloyd&nbsp;(Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe), and&nbsp;Jason Wesaw&nbsp;(Pokagon Band of Potawatomi) —Woven Being&nbsp;explores confluences that continue to shape Indigenous creative practices in the region and beyond. Chicagoland is the traditional homeland of the people of the Council of Three Fires— the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, Ho-Chunk, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois nations. It has been a longstanding cultural and economic hub for Indigenous peoples and continues to be today. People from many Indigenous nations call the region home, and the city of Chicago has the third-largest urban Indigenous population in the United States.&nbsp;The richness of Indigenous experiences and contributions are often excluded from Chicago’s art histories.&nbsp;Woven Being&nbsp;counters this by centering the ideas, choices, and voices of Indigenous artists.&nbsp; "How does our understanding of Chicago change when seen through Indigenous perspectives? This exhibition helps shift views about the place Chicagoans call home by revealing Indigenous stories that have been erased or omitted from mainstream narratives." – Jordan Poorman Cocker (Kiowa, Terra Foundation Guest Co-Curator The exhibition presents more than&nbsp;80 artworks by 33 artists&nbsp;active from the mid-20th century to today and includes multiple newly commissioned works. “Just as a black ash basket is given form through the interweaving of many splints,&nbsp;Woven Being&nbsp;was developed through an in-depth collaboration with and between these artists and The Block’s project team,” says Poorman Cocker. This artist-centered approach has resulted in a distinctive exhibition where the artists have shaped a context for their work amid works by other artists of their choosing.&nbsp;Together, the artworks highlight the shared aesthetics, materials, values, communities, and relations of the interconnected artists.&nbsp;The themes of land and waterways, kinship with plants and animals, and Indigenous concepts of time likewise connect the exhibition’s artworks and stories. “These perspectives are central to understanding Chicago’s specific cultural landscape. This July, Perspective Gallery is pleased to present recent work by 23 Chicago-area photographers.&nbsp;This exhibit is the latest installment of the juried "Vicinity" exhibition that Perspctive presents each summer. Where we dwell

Roger Carlson worked at The Friends of Community Public Art in Joliet, painting murals, working with oil-based clay sculpture, glass and ceramic tile mosaics. He also worked at Marsha Lega Studio, making sculptures out of stainless-steel sheets with different grinding finishes as well as stainless-steel mirror and picture frames, tabletops, and wall panels. Roger studied graphic design and fine art at Joliet Junior College and University of St. Francis. He incorporates both traditional painting and graphic design in his paintings, which are created in reverse on plexiglass using acrylic paint, spray paint, paint marker, and ink.

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.evanstonartcenter.org/exhibitions/try-remember-karen-perl" target="_blank">Try to Remember | Karen Perl</a>On July 8th, the Evanston Art Center will open an exhibition showcasing the works of Karen Perl, an Evanston based artist.At around the age of 13, I inherited a box of paints and some brushes. I knew absolutely nothing about oil paints. But I had an image in my head of a thick wooded area with a path running through the center. A person was walking down the path. This coincidence of the acquisition of the painting materials and the presence of the inner vision ignited my desire to paint. Here was a means of describing something that I could not express in words. I spent several years attending various colleges, intermittently studying physics and psychology, before getting a degree in drawing and painting, with an emphasis on the figure, from the School of the Art Institute in 1985. During my third year of art school, I attended the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland, where I worked primarily from dreams and imagination. I also spent several years in the South of France cultivating a practice of setting up my easel outside and painting the landscape. I currently work out of my studio located in my home in Evanston Illinois. Try to Remember | Karen Perl&nbsp;will be exhibited in the Second Floor Atrium Gallery of the Art Center. 2025 Curatorial Fellowship Exhibition

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to our upcoming exhibition,&nbsp;Leopold Segedin | A Habit of Art: Paintings from 2015 to the Present. The exhibition will be on display fromJuly 8 - August 10, 2025, and will be free and open to the public.Leopold Segedin is a Chicago-born painter (b. 1927) who has been exhibiting his work since 1944. His works have been shown at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Milwaukee Art Institute. At 97, Segedin currently lives and works in Evanston from his home studio. After retiring after 32 years of teaching in 1987, Segedin’s major retrospective&nbsp;I Remember&nbsp;was held in the Renaissance Court of the Chicago Cultural Center. He has since exhibited with a group called the ‘5’ at the Belzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, the Loyola University Art Gallery, the Ukrainian Institute of Fine Art, and Suburban Fine Art Center in Highland Park.Segedin has had nearly two dozen solo exhibitions in the Chicagoland area and his work has been recognized by several arts institutions including the Art Institute. Leopold Segedin | A Habit of Art: Paintings from 2015 to the Present

CROSSINGS&nbsp;traverses the Museum’s campus and features several dynamic vehicle sculptures by Bernard Williams in Wilder Park, Hostetler Gallery and large paintings in the McCormick House. Through the artworks on view, the artist addresses the concept of mobility as both the physical movement forward and the human aspiration to rise to better circumstances.The Chicago-based artist has been making public murals and sculptures for over thirty years. Bold thick lines and generalized, flat shapes common in graphic illustration define his unique and playful sculptural style. Williams often researches and highlights little known or forgotten narratives in history to make his sculptures, paintings and murals, which offer new perspectives on the engineering innovations of the past and how they impact contemporary culture. The works are also a tribute to Black achievement in transportation and agriculture throughout American history. Pilot Bessie Coleman, NASCAR driver Wendell Scott, and the recent Black Farmers’ Settlement are some of the histories being honored in this exhibition. CROSSINGS by Bernard Williams

Legacies: Selections from the Elmhurst Art Museum Permanent Collection&nbsp;features dozens of artists from Salvador Dali and Mies van der Rohe to Kay Rosen and Michiko Itatani drawn from the Elmhurst Art Museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition explores the relationships between artists, collectors, and museums that lead to larger, ongoing narratives connecting people across time and place.A regional center of 20th&nbsp;century American Art and Midcentury Design, the Elmhurst Art Museum Collection began in the 1990s and now includes approximately 1,000 works drawn from over 200 collections or donors, with a focus on modern and contemporary art works by Midwestern artists, architects, and designers that have exhibited at the museum, and furniture design items related to McCormick House.The exhibition will feature micro installations of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures from over a dozen collections donated to the Museum, and includes local, regional, national, and international artists.

Legacies: New Views of the Elmhurst Art Museum's Permanent Collection

In the Shadow of Coal&nbsp;will highlight botanical species of the Waukegan Dunes, located along Lake Michigan and adjacent to a coal-fired power plant. The exhibition will draw attention to the environmental injustices caused by the continued contamination of this coal-fired power plant on people and the environment and the immense threat posed to Lake Michigan. The exhibition comprises traditional, contemporary, and abstract botanical art and will be curated through an open-call with three jurors: Heeyoung Kim (who leads the Botanical Academy at Brushwood), a representative from the Driehaus Museum, and a local arts leader from Waukegan. Onsite programming will include an opening and speaking program, an exhibition guide, and guided tours.
