ENGAGE Projects is excited to bring a fresh take to the gallery experience with the upcoming exhibition Moonlight: Out of the Chaos in Chicago’s historic Bucktown district. The pop-up show, organized by Director of ENGAGE Projects Jennifer Armetta, curator Nora Schneider, interdisciplinary artist Kasia Kay, and sculptor Lucy Slivinski, is a rumination on feminine forces and cyclical change, imperfection and inner peace. Just as the moon reflects the sun’s light, it also represents a reflection on our own lives, choices, and the state of the world around us; Moonlight asks the questions, How do we find the calm amidst turbulent times? What is my guiding light in the darkness? The gallery will showcase a variety of sculpture and mixed media painting and will be host to a series of exhibition programming made to activate this space of community including cocktail hours, panel discussions, and community gatherings. Interested in introspection and identity, Kasia Kay is a Polish American painter and sculptor who splits her time between the United States and Poland. She earned her B.F.A. from Columbia College Chicago in 2004 and acquired expertise in metal casting at the Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center in 2017. Kay has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, and the United States, and her works are included in collections in Europe and the U.S. A seasoned curator, Kay has curated numerous international group exhibitions and site-specific projects in major cities such as Athens (Greece), Chicago (U.S.A.), Miami (U.S.A.), and New York (U.S.A.), contributing to the global art community. Kasia Kay has been featured in Artnet News, :arte Venice, Newcity Art, Chicago Gallery News, Chicago Interiors, and The New York Times among other publications.Lucy Slivinski is a sculptor and installation artist based in Chicago. With over 40 years of experience, she utilizes recycled materials and inventive processes in her life-long practice. Slivinski holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Northern Illinois University. Her innovative approach to art has earned her numerous honors and opportunities including her installation “Bon Journée! In the Land of Love,” at Nick Cave’s exhibition space Facility in 2025, the solo exhibition “Passion Dance”at N’Namdi Center for the Arts in 2023 in Detroit, Michigan, and three years as the artist in residence at EXPO Chicago where she created large-scale light installations among other opportunities. Her work is part of many private and public collections including Capital Investments Collection, The Longhouse Collection in New York, the City of Chicago, City of Bolingbrook, Illinois, and the City of St. Cloud, Minnesota. Slivinski’s work has been featured in prominent publications such as Art in America, The New York Times, NewCity Magazine, The OG Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, Chicago Interiors, and Luxe Magazine.Based in Chicago, Nora Schneider is an interior designer, curator and patron of the arts. She attained her Interior Design degree from The Harrington School of Interior Design in 2000 and formed her firm that same year. Schneider believes interior design should be as unique and diverse as its inhabitants and that art enhances everything. A core principle of her practice is to create an exceptional design experience that has your living space mirror not only who you are, but enhance the way you live. MOONLIGHT: Out of the Chaos

Joy Machine is pleased to present Life Forms, a solo exhibition by Janny Baek, on view from March 20 to May 9, 2026.How do we conceive of change? With fear, excitement, or uncertainty? As Janny Baek builds sculptural ceramics of speculative beings and imagined landscapes, she grapples with these questions. The work follows its own dream logic, one that accepts incongruity and dissonance as necessary to play and experimentation. Marbling hunks of colored clay, coiling bases, and molding a singular material into something new is part of an exploratory practice that embraces transformation and its often strange outcomes. Life Forms emerges from this dual meaning, invoking both the act of creation and the fantastical works it produces. Neither wholly abstract nor representational, Baek’s sculptures draw on natural structures and processes and invite us to question how we interpret the world around us. Recognizable forms like open blossoms, birds, and creatures are met with the unexpected. These lively components make even the more abstract works appear animate, like ambiguous organisms that might decide to scuttle away. They evoke something primordial and yet are exhilaratingly new. Baek paints in the way she sketches, as a means of developing ideas and visualizing their potential. For her ceramics, she incorporates hand building alongside the Japanese pottery technique known as nerikomi, which involves splicing and designing patterns with strips of colored clay. “My material choices are a way of thinking about natural processes: color gradients as the continuous nature of change, a multitude of colors as potential, abundance, and vitality, and patterns as signals and communications,” she says. Hovering between worlds, Baek’s work populates a speculative environment in which beings morph, mutate, and blossom, their individual features forming an otherworldly lineage that’s recognizable but not identical. While “temporarily and imperfectly captured in a moment of many possible transformations,” the works beckon us into a world in which change is not only inevitable but also the most alluring proposition. Life Forms is Baek’s Chicago debut.An opening reception will be held on March 20, and the artist will be present.About the artist: Janny Baek is an artist and architect born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Queens, New York. She received her BFA in ceramics from Rhode Island School of Design, and worked as a sculptor in animation and toys before completing her Master's in Architecture at Harvard University. Baek brings her experience as a sculptor, designer, and architect to her ceramics today. After founding her firm, McMahon-Baek Architecture, in 2014, she returned to the medium in 2019. Her work is part of the collection of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and has been shown at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, the Korea Society, and the Korea Ceramics Foundation, among others. Baek currently lives and works in lower Manhattan with her husband and their two daughters.

This exhibition is a collaboration with Loyola University's Fine Arts Division, including student and faculty work from both institutions.&nbsp;The show will feature works that convey meaning through embodied art practice. Pieces that explore the rich history, tradition, and cultural expression of contemporary sculpture, including ceramics, glass, and stone, as well as innovative, reinterpretative sculptural works using non-traditional materials that push the boundaries of visual art.

Oliva Gallery presents&nbsp;Girl Talk, a solo exhibition of paintings by Chicago-based artist Lindsey Kircher, on view from April 3 through May 30, 2026. The exhibition brings together a group of recent figurative works that stage psychologically charged scenes populated by women, animals, and symbolic objects. Through dense compositions and saturated color, Kircher constructs theatrical environments that blur the boundaries between interior life and performance. Kircher’s paintings unfold as layered narrative spaces in which bodies, decorative objects, and animal figures intertwine. Poodles, parrots, musical instruments, bird cages, fruit, and candles appear alongside female figures whose poses oscillate between vulnerability and command. Limbs twist and fold across the canvas, creating compositions that feel at once intimate and unstable. These environments operate less like conventional portraits and more like staged psychological tableaux where fragments of domestic life accumulate into something closer to myth or allegory. Across the exhibition, Kircher examines the visual language historically used to frame femininity. The paintings reference traditions of figurative painting that intertwine the body, ornament, and domestic space, yet they complicate these associations through exaggeration, humor, and visual excess. Characters appear aware of their own performance, inhabiting environments that feel part boudoir and part stage set. Dispossession—the deprivation of land, culture, language, or all three—has been a defining and enduring condition across the Americas, initiated by the expansion of European colonialism.&nbsp;Dispossessions in the Americas:&nbsp;The Extraction of Bodies, Land, and Heritage from La Conquista to the Present&nbsp;brings&nbsp;together&nbsp;more than 40 works by 36 contemporary artists from across Latin America whose work broadly seeks to critique and unsettle the long-standing politics of dispossession. Curated by&nbsp;Jonathan D. A desire to open the space to uncover the reality living deep within.”&nbsp;-Barbara Nessim&nbsp;Since the 1960s, Barbara Nessim (b. 1939) has developed a unique visual language in painting and drawing that challenges traditional gender norms. As one of the first women to gain prominence in the male-dominated world of commercial art and illustration, Nessim’s work confronts stereotypes about femininity and sexuality, while also celebrating the agency of women. In every facet of her work—whether as a visual artist, illustrator, designer, teacher, or archivist—Nessim’s practice is guided by an insatiable curiosity, driving her to continually explore new ideas, techniques, and mediums. A pioneer in computer art during the 1980s, Nessim has had an impact far beyond the art world, including fashion, advertising, and pop culture. By consistently challenging norms and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression, Nessim continues creating work that is as relevant and resonant today as it was when she first began her career.&nbsp;Barbara Nessim’s solo exhibition at DePaul Art Museum—her first one in Chicago—includes paintings, drawings, computer art prints, a site specific installation, with special emphasis on the artist’s sketchbooks or her “forever books,” as she calls them, which have been instrumental to her creative process. “The books tell the story, they see it all, the good parts, the bad, and the ugly. Nothing escapes. Nothing edited. Barbara Nessim: My Compass Is the Line

What is the difference between “looking” and “seeing”? How is meaning made and how do forms signify? These questions have concerned Chicago-based artist Alice Tippit (b. 1975) for more than a decade. Her paintings and works on paper generate multiple layers of meaning through poetic techniques like metaphor, serving as indirect references rather than clear, straightforward representations. The images in Tippit’s paintings float between the familiar and the enigmatic––recognizable forms and shapes are removed from any clear context or obvious meaning. Martin Wong: Chinatown USA&nbsp;traces the development of the work of the queer painter and poet, highlighting Wong’s connection with the art and&nbsp;culture&nbsp;of&nbsp;Asia,&nbsp;inparticular through&nbsp;his&nbsp;collecting&nbsp;of&nbsp;pre-modern&nbsp;Asian&nbsp;art and antiquities and his explorations of the Chinatowns of New York and San Francisco from 1970 through the 1990s. A large portion of the exhibition is devoted to his Chinatown paintings, which were the subject of a major exhibition titled&nbsp;Chinatown USA&nbsp;presented at P.P.O.W. Gallery in New York City and the San Francisco Art Institute in 1993. These works depict notable architecture such as the Chinese pagoda-style building at 241 Canal Street, iconic actor Bruce Lee and Peking opera performer Mei Lanfang, festivities like the Chinese New Year Parade, and&nbsp;street&nbsp;scenes. The exhibition also explores Wong’s interest in counterculture communities (such as Puerto Rican poets and graffiti artists) and language through his poetry and American Sign Language paintings. The latter are presented alongside a&nbsp;small&nbsp;selection&nbsp;of works by artists of the modern graffiti movement from Wong’s personal&nbsp;collection,&nbsp;which he donatedto&nbsp;the Museum&nbsp;of the City of New York in 1994. Wong died in 1999 at the age of 53 from an AIDS-related illness.&nbsp;Martin Wong: Chinatown USA&nbsp;is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by Halsted A&amp;A Foundation and Gregory R. Miller &amp; Co. Edited by Yasufumi Nakamori, it includes six essays by leading scholars Solomon&nbsp;Adler, Lisa Hsiao Chen, Mark&nbsp;D.&nbsp;Johnson,&nbsp;Vivian&nbsp;Li, Margo Machida, and Lydia Yee.
