Tandem Press is pleased to host&nbsp;Grabando Historias, a Master of Fine Arts Qualifier Exhibition by Christie Tirado, University of Wisconsin-Madison MFA Candidate and 2024-2025 Tandem Press Studio Project Assistant. Drawing from her own experience as the daughter of Mexican immigrants, Christie Tirado uses relief block printing to bring visibility to often overlooked narratives of immigrant families. Her work preserves personal and collective histories, capturing transnational migration stories while honoring the labor and sacrifices of those who have shaped communities across borders. Artist BiographyChristie Tirado is a Mexican American interdisciplinary artist and educator from Yakima, WA, currently residing in Madison, WI. As the daughter of immigrants, she navigates the complexities of her heritage, drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of relief block printing. Her work explores the impact of migration on culture, identity, traditions, memories, and histories, with a particular focus on labor-related migration within Mexican diasporas. Deeply rooted in personal familial histories, her practice reflects the resilience and lived experiences of her own family while also&nbsp;grabando&nbsp;both personal and collective narratives. Through cultural exploration and artistic practice, she sheds light on the layered narratives of migration and cultural (in)visibility.Tirado earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, and her Master’s in Teaching from Heritage University in Toppenish, WA. She is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.Her accolades include the 2020 Larry Sommers Fellowship through Seattle Print Arts and the 2020 Golden Apple Award for innovative teaching in Washington State. She is also an Education Graduate Research Scholar&nbsp;at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her artwork has been exhibited and collected nationally in museums and galleries such as Davidson Galleries in Seattle, WA; San Francisco State University, CA; Sonoma State University, CA; The Sun Valley Museum of Art, ID; and La Productora Gráfica del Bosque in Oaxaca, Mexico, among others. Additionally, her work has been featured in prominent news outlets and magazines nationwide, including&nbsp;High Country News,&nbsp;ProPublica, and&nbsp;Crosscut.Previously, Tirado worked as an elementary and middle school art teacher in the Yakima Valley, WA, for eight years. She is currently a project assistant at Tandem Press.This exhibition is supported by the Anonymous Fund.

Christie Tirado: Grabando Historias

Young at Art&nbsp;showcases the creativity and imagination of the next generation of artists by offering students the opportunity to see their work on display in the museum’s galleries. Featuring drawings, paintings, photographs, collages, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, fiber, found objects, collaborative projects, and multi-media art, the exhibition highlights the talents of students from kindergarten through grade 12. Whether inspired by personal experiences, societal issues, experimentation with color and line, or the beauty of nature, the exhibition demonstrates young people’s ability to comprehend and address contemporary issues, including identity, environmentalism, technology, and social justice.&nbsp;&nbsp; Each of Madison’s public school art teachers is invited to submit works of art for inclusion as part of this long-standing collaboration with the Fine Arts Department of the Madison Metropolitan School District. Young at Art&nbsp;not only features the development of artistic technique and skill, but the courage of young people to experiment, innovate, and engage critically with the world around them. Most importantly, it calls attention to the inherent possibility in Gen Z, and the possibilities of creative expression for years to come.&nbsp;

Art Passions of Collectors and Curators: Personal Visions, Shared Treasures

Images of environmental destruction dominate the news: the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, flooding caused by rising sea levels, devastating wildfires sparked by drought, oil spills destroying marine ecosystems, and extreme temperatures creating dangerous conditions for plant, animal, and human life. It is no wonder that protecting the environment is one of the most important issues for Gen Z.&nbsp;&nbsp; Green Over Grey: The Art of Adaptation&nbsp;challenges us to hope in the face of dangers at the dawn of the Anthropocene, the current period in Earth’s history defined by humanity’s impact on the planet and its ecosystems. And yet, this era could also be defined by Nature’s resilience and tenacity. Through frank depictions of eco-anxiety, fantastical elements, and science-fiction embellishments, this exhibition explores how Nature can survive, adapt, and even flourish despite human influence.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Featuring artwork created by Dane County high school artists,&nbsp;Green Over Grey: The Art of Adaptation&nbsp;was organized by the Museum’s Teen Forum. The group worked together to conceive, plan, and install this exhibition and its related programming, under the guidance of the Museum’s Education department. Green Over Grey: The Art of Adaptation

For&nbsp;Bird and Blossom,&nbsp;MMoCA presents a selection of&nbsp;kachō-e&nbsp;(flower-and-bird pictures) woodblock prints from the Museum’s permanent collection. This exhibition explores artistic renderings of the natural world through two pivotal Japanese print movements: the Edo and Meiji era&nbsp;ukiyo-e&nbsp;and twentieth-century&nbsp;shin hanga. In these colorfully rendered works, animal-habitat relationships prompt close examination. Delicate surface details, the result of the multiblock woodblock printing process, convey naturalistic specificity as well as moments of poetic stylization. The 20 artworks in the exhibition were collected by Madison residents Rudolph and Louise Langer which formed part of the foundational gift to the Museum’s permanent collection in 1968. This presentation of Langer Bequest prints not only prompts conversations about the history of Japanese printmaking but also is a reminder of MMoCA’s foundational strength in prints. Reengaging with these prints in a contemporary setting invites the larger discussion of how our relationship with and understanding of the collection shifts over extended periods of time and in new contexts. <h6> </h6><h6>Helpful Definitions</h6> Ukiyo-e:&nbsp;“floating world pictures,” prints from the Edo and Meiji era. In Defense of Beauty, an exhibition featuring mixed media works by Chicago artist Allison Svoboda, opens at OS Projects on February 8, 2025 and continues through April 12, 2025. The gallery will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, February 8, from 1 – 3 pm. Allison Svoboda’s artwork functions as an extended meditation on our natural environment. At OS Projects, Svoboda will be exhibiting two bodies of related work: “radical” plein air paintings the artist created at various locations in collaboration with bodies of water that are under threat, and torn paper installations from her Mandala series. Svoboda’s plein air paintings are an ode to the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River and their watersheds. Svoboda combined water from these sites with water-soluble pigments and exposed the work to water movement, wind and land-derived materials such as sand, salt and plant matter. Akin to automatism practiced by the Dadaists and Surrealists, the paintings are made in a sense from a “spirit hand,” as natural forces and materials are allowed to take over the surfacesof the works, imbuing them with the intrinsic character of the water and surrounding land. Like the plein air works, Svoboda’s Mandala series is influenced by organic forms and patterns (such as fractal geometry) and guided by both design and instinct. To create the works in the series, the artist first made hundreds of small paintings with thousands of brushstrokes, after which she collated the paintings, tore out images that align, then constructed from them a visually complex, wall-mounted collage of self-similar shapes. The paper’s ephemeral quality and rhythmic brushwork evoke a Buddhist mandala and encourage extended contemplation. Predicated on equal doses of inquiry and revelation, Svoboda’s artwork asks us to pay close attention to the dichotomy between destruction and growth that defines the natural world--as well as the fear, braided with wonder, that encapsulates our response to it. About the ArtistAllison Svoboda’s art practice exists on the edge between intuitive and deliberate mark making. Through paintings, sculpture and installations that are both ethereal and ominous, Svoboda highlights nature’s ability to regenerate, activate, and heal despite the damaged state of our environment. In 2015, she received the Hemera Fellowship to study Zen, calligraphy and shibori in Japan. This meditative practice and mark making continue to influence her work.Svoboda has shown her work at galleries, art centers and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad, including the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (Chicago, IL); Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago, IL); Walker Gallery (Denver, CO); K Imperial Gallery (San Francisco, CA); Olson-Larsen Galleries (Des Moines, IA); Fiskars Village (Finland); and Mingara Gallery (Australia). Jordan Scott: Connections

At RAM’s Wustum Museum Now in its 58th year,&nbsp;Watercolor Wisconsin&nbsp;was started in 1966 to honor the depth and breadth of watercolor in the state. This year’s exhibition features 80 works by 69 artists from across Wisconsin. Jurors Tony Armendariz and Shelley Gilchrist considered 200 pieces submitted by 116 artists and curated the works seen in the 2024 exhibition. Armendariz is a contemporary realist artist living and painting in Palatine, Illinois. His work focuses on figurative subjects rendered in watercolor. Armendariz has won numerous awards in regional and national competitions and has exhibited his work in many group and solo exhibitions. Armendariz is a signature member of many national societies, including the American Watercolor Society and the Illinois Watercolor Society, where he also served as director. Gilchrist is an award-winning abstract artist based in Evanston, Illinois, working in two and three dimensions in a variety of media, including acrylic. In 2006, her work turned toward abstraction when she began to shape her painting surfaces and explore line and color in her designs. Gilchrist has juried shows at Woman Made Gallery and ARC Gallery in Chicago. She is a member of Chicago Sculpture International and the founder of FUSEDChicago, a professional group for artists using encaustic. Similar to previous years, Executive Director and Curator of Collections Bruce W. Pepich used memorial purchase award funds to obtain four works from this exhibition for RAM’s collection holdings. Thanks to generous donors over the years, and the ability to use specified funds to acquire work, RAM can count almost 600 watercolors as part of its works on paper collection.

This solo exhibition of work by Willie Cole, who was an Arts/Industry resident in the Kohler Co. Pottery in 2000, features newly commissioned sculptures alongside a selection of works spanning over three decades.Cole visualizes the reality that domestic spaces are often tangled with histories of enslaved labor. He uses the visual vocabulary of the domestic sphere—shoes, tools, furniture, for example—to bring forward the grief and intimacy that linger within private spaces.By using craft and household objects in his artworks, Cole spreads awareness of women’s and enslaved peoples’ labor that has been ignored or under recognized and is integral to the history of the United States. These reflective works are Cole’s initiative to complicate labor histories and lack of visual representations in the art canon.Home Assembly highlights Cole’s refiguring of familiar and frequently discarded objects to confront and demand attention from his audience. His assemblages and prints convey intricate histories and messages, demonstrating the complexities and the commonalities shared in the cultivation of homes and the lives they shelter. Cole frequently uses the iron —burn marks, the ironing board, and the iron itself—as parts of human figures, as protective shields, as the shape of ships that transported enslaved Africans to the Americas, and to commemorate the work of women.The chandelier sculptures on view allude to the community investment involved in constructing a home. For fifty years, the Arts/Industry residency program has given space for meaningful connections between the arts and industry. At the core of those moments are the Kohler Co. factory associates—mechanics, engineers, technicians, mold makers, and many more. They work side-by-side with the artists, giving time, sharing skills and knowledge, and often opening their homes and personal lives.Lunch Break: Arts/Industry in Between celebrates that powerful exchange between artist and associate through artwork made in the factory. It brings forward the conversations and relationships that happen as a result of making art.This exhibition focuses on artwork made by residency artists that celebrates the associates or that exemplifies the cooperative learning that takes place at the factory. The works on view are drawn primarily from the Arts/Industry collections of JMKAC and Kohler Co. Each artist gifts one work to each organization at the end of their residency,Art objects made by associates while on break from their duties or after hours are also shown. In addition, a selection of artist gifts to associates will be on display. Teralyn Brown: MFA Thesis Exhibition

A community-wide celebration of Madison’s vibrant art scene. Gallery Night is a long-time Madison arts tradition that showcases the city’s vibrant arts community. Organized by MMoCA, Gallery Night offers art lovers and art novices alike an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of exhibitions, opening receptions, special events, and demonstrations at venues throughout the city. During Gallery Night, dozens of venues open their doors to invite the public in to see and shop for original artwork. Gallery Night takes place from 5–9 PM, though some participating venues set their own hours. All venues participating in Gallery Night are open free of charge.

Gallery Night

As art forms, collage and assemblage are most closely associated with the modern era—particularly the early twentieth century. However, as a technique, collage—with its root word&nbsp;coller&nbsp;meaning to stick together or glue—has been practiced for centuries. While both collage and assemblage involve piecing together materials, collage describes two-dimensional compositions while assemblage generally characterizes three-dimensional works. Often, although not exclusively, collage and assemblage feature found or non-traditional art media. Many modern and contemporary artists even draw attention to their usage of various, often unexpected materials. Rather than disguising the multiple components of collage and assemblage, they explore ways of combining and expanding the information visually to create a unified whole made of bits and pieces of other things. Artists often engage elements that reflect modern life or larger themes—for example, found and recycled materials, or socially or politically charged images. Focused on the breadth of two- and three-dimensional work in RAM’s collection, this exhibition includes sculpture, collage, jewelry, quilts, and art to wear compiled from or appearing as a variety of individual pieces. In addition to being an exploration of artist process and material exploration,&nbsp;Pieces&nbsp;underscores the ability of some artists to recontextualize the marginalized or overlooked and to imbue the ordinary with something extraordinary. With an emphasis on repurposed and found materials, this exhibition supports RAM’s Zero Waste Art Initiative, an ongoing and multi-faceted project encouraging reconsideration of consumption habits and creative solutions for reuse. Barsky has been knitting since 1999 and has received acclaim for his wearable art, which features various landmarks and monuments. He has become “internet famous” for the photographs he posts of himself wearing these sweaters at the various locations depicted. Barsky doesn’t sell his sweaters and has rarely shown them outside of his photographs and at the workshops he hosts around the country. The sweaters are both aspirational and nostalgic. Like postcards, they are a way for Barsky to connect with places he enjoys, or those he wants to visit. Once worn, they hold memories of his time there. They also act as a point of connection–a way for Barsky to build a community, to share his experiences of travel and invite others to share theirs. In this vein, Barsky will knit a sweater featuring the Arts Center for the exhibition. Visitors will be able to borrow this sweater and photograph themselves wearing it, a la Barsky’s internet practice. Sam Barsky: It’s Not the Same Without You

His parents were first-generation Americans, descended from Swiss and Norwegian immigrants. In 2006, at age 76, he constructed a wooden model of the East Wiota Lutheran Church—the church he attended as a child. He then completed ten more Wisconsin church models, in addition to a model of the farmhouse he grew up in and the parsonage of the East Wiota church. Each was made to-scale, done through a process of “foot-pacing” (measuring the building’s size with his feet). The models are constructed of repurposed and found materials, including wood, gift wrapping paper, photographs, and paint.Now in the collection of the Arts Center, this exhibition represents the first public showing of these works. Rooted in the experience of her HMong community and shaped by family experiences and lore passed down by her elders, Her takes a formally rigorous approach to photography to explore the complex intertwining of artifice and desire bound up in dreams of homeland.Pao Houa Her: The Imaginative Landscape&nbsp;is the first survey of Her’s practice, covering nearly twenty years of work, with selections from six major series to date, as well as new work made in the jungles of Laos. Co-organized by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) and the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) in California, the exhibition embraces the diverse U.S. contexts in which HMong communities have adapted and fabricated homelands. Though specific to Her’s own HMong-American experience,&nbsp;The Imaginative Landscape&nbsp;is a meditation on the construction of homeland that resonates across a variety of diasporic experiences. In both Sheboygan and San Jose, the exhibition will exceed the institutional space with lightboxes in local restaurants and community gathering places, wheat pasted images in public locations, and billboard displays. A complete list of sites will be announced closer to the exhibition opening. * HMong is written with a capital H and M to be inclusive of White Hmong and Green Mong dialects. Speakers of the White dialect pronounce “Hmong” with a silent “H,” indicating a nasal aspiration or puff of air out of the nose. Speakers of the Green dialect pronounce “Mong” without.
