A community-wide celebration of Madison’s vibrant art scene. Gallery Night is a long-time Madison arts tradition that showcases the city’s vibrant arts community. Organized by MMoCA, Gallery Night offers art lovers and art novices alike an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of exhibitions, opening receptions, special events, and demonstrations at venues throughout the city. During Gallery Night, dozens of venues open their doors to invite the public in to see and shop for original artwork. Gallery Night takes place from 5–9 PM, though some participating venues set their own hours. All venues participating in Gallery Night are open free of charge.

Door County Contemporary Art Fair

The Door County Contemporary Art Fair will be held at the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, Wisconsin from June 5 to June 8, 2025. The three-day program will introduce art to art enthusiasts in an event yet unseen in Wisconsin. It was born from the desire to address a lack of contemporary art in an otherwise culturally enriched and dynamic destination. And to do it with an enthusiasm that embraces the energy, vision, and welcoming spirit of the region. DCC will host 14 art galleries from Wisconsin and beyond while welcoming thousands of art lovers from around the United States. It will also feature a wealth of site-specific art works and projects, plenty of Wisconsin-centric food and drink, and curated events and art-related projects. Door County Contemporary will be more than an art fair, it will be a three-day celebration of art and ideas. All of it set against the backdrop of one of the America’s greatest geographical settings–a brilliant contrast of perspectives that will make it a truly memorable and unique occasion. DCC hopes to leave visitors feeling they’ve married the best of fine art with the idiosyncratic swagger of the region, meant to resonate long after its visitors exit State Highway 42/57. As art forms, collage and assemblage are most closely associated with the modern era—particularly the early twentieth century. However, as a technique, collage—with its root word&nbsp;coller&nbsp;meaning to stick together or glue—has been practiced for centuries. While both collage and assemblage involve piecing together materials, collage describes two-dimensional compositions while assemblage generally characterizes three-dimensional works. Often, although not exclusively, collage and assemblage feature found or non-traditional art media. Many modern and contemporary artists even draw attention to their usage of various, often unexpected materials. Rather than disguising the multiple components of collage and assemblage, they explore ways of combining and expanding the information visually to create a unified whole made of bits and pieces of other things. Artists often engage elements that reflect modern life or larger themes—for example, found and recycled materials, or socially or politically charged images. Focused on the breadth of two- and three-dimensional work in RAM’s collection, this exhibition includes sculpture, collage, jewelry, quilts, and art to wear compiled from or appearing as a variety of individual pieces. In addition to being an exploration of artist process and material exploration,&nbsp;Pieces&nbsp;underscores the ability of some artists to recontextualize the marginalized or overlooked and to imbue the ordinary with something extraordinary. With an emphasis on repurposed and found materials, this exhibition supports RAM’s Zero Waste Art Initiative, an ongoing and multi-faceted project encouraging reconsideration of consumption habits and creative solutions for reuse. OS Projects is pleased to present Things Seem Strong, a solo exhibition of photographs by Milwaukee artist Mark Brautigam, opening May 10 and continuing through July 12. A receptionfor the artist will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 1–3 pm. Mark Brautigam’s artwork interrogates our sense of time, on both a personal and geological scale. Using photography and video as his primary media, Brautigam explores how these different timescales manifest across our lives and the landscape. In his OS Projects exhibition, Brautigam directs his attention to the Driftless Area, a region encompassing southwestern Wisconsin and parts of Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois that was spared the repeated leveling forces of glaciation common throughout the Upper Midwest. Cycles of sedimentation and erosion have continued to shape the landscape of the Driftless for millions of years, creating a geological terrain that stands in stark contrast to the areas that surround it. The photographs in Things Seem Strong were made in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota from 2017-2020. Installed across the walls of the gallery like a film strip or the unbound pages of a book, the series contrasts two vastly different senses of time: the human sense of time, which we rely on to define our lives, and deep time, which defines the history of the planet. While many of the images feature the unique landforms of a region hundreds of millions of years old, they also depict fleeting moments of humanity and a world that is seasonally cyclical, ultimately pitting the ephemeral against the eternal. About the Artist Mark Brautigam is an artist whose work explores the intersection of place, time, and memory. He attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, and served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for four years. He has exhibited at the Haggerty Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center and the Newspace Center for Photography. His work is in the collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Museum of Wisconsin Art, the Haggerty Museum of Art and the Racine Art Museum, as well as the We Energies Foundation Art Collection and numerous private collections.

Barsky has been knitting since 1999 and has received acclaim for his wearable art, which features various landmarks and monuments. He has become “internet famous” for the photographs he posts of himself wearing these sweaters at the various locations depicted. Barsky doesn’t sell his sweaters and has rarely shown them outside of his photographs and at the workshops he hosts around the country. The sweaters are both aspirational and nostalgic. Like postcards, they are a way for Barsky to connect with places he enjoys, or those he wants to visit. Once worn, they hold memories of his time there. They also act as a point of connection–a way for Barsky to build a community, to share his experiences of travel and invite others to share theirs. In this vein, Barsky will knit a sweater featuring the Arts Center for the exhibition. Visitors will be able to borrow this sweater and photograph themselves wearing it, a la Barsky’s internet practice. Sam Barsky: It’s Not the Same Without You

His parents were first-generation Americans, descended from Swiss and Norwegian immigrants. In 2006, at age 76, he constructed a wooden model of the East Wiota Lutheran Church—the church he attended as a child. He then completed ten more Wisconsin church models, in addition to a model of the farmhouse he grew up in and the parsonage of the East Wiota church. Each was made to-scale, done through a process of “foot-pacing” (measuring the building’s size with his feet). The models are constructed of repurposed and found materials, including wood, gift wrapping paper, photographs, and paint.Now in the collection of the Arts Center, this exhibition represents the first public showing of these works. Awakening the Senses: Art that Invites Interaction

Line Weight&nbsp;is guest curated by Teralyn Brown, our 2024-2025 University of Wisconsin-Madison Graduate Student Curatorial Assistant. During her time working at Tandem over the past year, Brown familiarized herself with many of the prints that have been created at Tandem Press. As one of her final projects, she was challenged to conceptualize and curate an exhibition of prints, selecting pieces from the Tandem Press inventory and contextualizing them to create a unique statement.The concept of line weight refers to the ability for texture, depth, value, and emotion to be conveyed through line alone by way of varying the thickness and qualities of line marks.&nbsp;In this exhibition of prints, the weight of the artists’ intentions is carried by the illusions of the printed line across multiple techniques.This exhibition includes prints by Suzanne Caporael, Manabu Ikeda, Michelle Grabner, Cameron Martin, Mickett/Stackhouse, Swoon, Dan Rizzie, David Shapiro, and Steven Sorman.This exhibition is supported by the Anonymous Fund.

Rooted in the experience of her HMong community and shaped by family experiences and lore passed down by her elders, Her takes a formally rigorous approach to photography to explore the complex intertwining of artifice and desire bound up in dreams of homeland.Pao Houa Her: The Imaginative Landscape&nbsp;is the first survey of Her’s practice, covering nearly twenty years of work, with selections from six major series to date, as well as new work made in the jungles of Laos. Co-organized by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) and the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) in California, the exhibition embraces the diverse U.S. contexts in which HMong communities have adapted and fabricated homelands. Though specific to Her’s own HMong-American experience,&nbsp;The Imaginative Landscape&nbsp;is a meditation on the construction of homeland that resonates across a variety of diasporic experiences. In both Sheboygan and San Jose, the exhibition will exceed the institutional space with lightboxes in local restaurants and community gathering places, wheat pasted images in public locations, and billboard displays. Domestic in A Foreign Sense&nbsp;is a solo exhibition by José Lerma featuring large-scale portraiture created in thick impasto and limited brush strokes. The title of the exhibition is a transposition of the phrase “foreign in a domestic sense,” which is how US Supreme Court Justice Henry Brown described Puerto Rico in his 1901 decision that placed the island as neither fully part of the United States nor an independent country. This contradictory statement led to years of uncertainty for Puerto Rico. This paradoxical nature is apparent in the artist’s paintings, which feature copious amounts of paint but few brushstrokes, challenging viewers’ expectations of both painting and portraiture. His work uniquely collapses historical and autobiographical elements, creating pieces that are part art history and part personal mythology. With a career spanning over two decades, Lerma’s return to the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is particularly significant, as it was here that he had his first museum exhibition in the 1999 Wisconsin Triennial after earning his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. José Lerma (b. 1971, Spain; lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico) received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2002. He has had over twenty solo exhibitions at galleries such as Kavi Gupta in Chicago, IL, Galerie Xavier Hufkens in Brussels, Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York, NY, and at museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. His works are represented in numerous collections, including the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Saatchi Collection in London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Domestic in a Foreign Sense

The Wisconsin Triennial is a cornerstone of MMoCA’s exhibition calendar. Every three years the exhibition charts the latest art being made across the state, capturing the richness and variety of artistic expression in Wisconsin. MMoCA’s curatorial staff selected new works of art by established and emerging artists through a rigorous review process beginning with an open call for entries in late September. From the over 250 applications from artists in every corner of the state, more than 30 artists were selected for additional review through an in-person studio visit. The final selection of 24 artists represents a wide range of artistic approaches and subjects. From painting to performance and figurative to formal abstraction, the exhibition reflects the rich diversity of Wisconsin’s visual arts scene. “The process of selecting the final roster of participating artists is always a formidable yet exhilarating challenge for a major survey like the Wisconsin Triennial,” says Paul Baker Prindle, MMoCA’s Gabriele Haberland Director. “We are confident that we have curated an exceptional group of artists whose practices beautifully reflect the richness of Wisconsin’s contributions to global contemporary art.” The 2025 Wisconsin Triennial jury is comprised of Paul Baker Prindle, the Gabriele Haberland Director; Mel Becker Solomon, Associate Research Curator at the Art Institute of Chicago; Eleanor Pschirrer-West, Assistant Curator at MMoCA; and Bob Sylvester, Director of Education and Programs at MMoCA. SAVOUR 2025

At RAM’s Wustum Museum Contemporary art jewelry often investigates cultural, social, personal, and environmental topics. Distinguished by a vocabulary of diverse media from precious metals to recycled objects, it also reflects artists’ interests in material exploration and notions of wearability. RAM’s holdings in art jewelry—with examples from artists from across the globe at varying stages in their careers—have grown rapidly. Artistic self-consciousness often drives those who make work considered “art jewelry,” though this is just part of a much larger conversation. Makers explore a wide variety of issues, materials, and themes, while utilizing media—both precious and non-precious—that encourage the exploration of jewelry and its history. In this selection of seven artists of color from RAM’s collection, the emphasis is on materials not traditionally anticipated for use in jewelry, such as polymer, safety pins, and silicone. While there are theoretically no limitations to the materials any artist can use, there have historically been barriers to some artists of color in the United States—indirect or otherwise—to access tools, materials, or studio spaces. At this moment, more and more efforts are being made to support and encourage the work of artists of color while drawing attention to existing work.Following the&nbsp;<a style="color: var(--link_color);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.ramart.org/exhibit/nicole-acosta-hoops/" target="_blank">solo exhibition of Nicole Acosta</a>, which featured photographs of people of the global majority wearing hoop earrings, this exhibition emphasizes an idea that RAM often explores: how adornment can go beyond decoration to become a symbolic and layered space for meaning. RAM Showcase: Focus on Adornment

Whether or not something is real or fabricated has become a compelling conversation in a contemporary context as technology allows for the simulation of reality on multiple levels. Artists have been interested in exploring the dynamics of representation and authenticity for many years, but what that actually looks like depends on the artist’s interests as well as what is happening in society at that time. For example, trompe l’oeil&nbsp;(French for fool or deceive the eye) artwork has been an artistic pursuit for centuries. The art form has been historically associated with two-dimensional imagery that appears as three-dimensional space or objects, but can also be applied to three-dimensional objects that, to put it simply, are deceptive in one context or another. Using clay and enamel on copper, respectively, Canadian artists and married couple Karen Dahl and James Doran explore these concepts through their well-known&nbsp;trompe l’oeil&nbsp;sculptures. The two are not collaborators, but their work is rooted in similar subject matter and a desire to explore what still life means in the modern era. A recent gift of 27 works by Dahl and Doran joined three pieces by Dahl already in RAM’s collection—establishing archive holdings for each artist. Fool Me Once: The Trompe L’oeil Sculpture of Karen Dahl and James Doran

The first mid-career survey of the artist’s work,&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.jmkac.org/exhibition/ashwini-bhat-reverberating-self/?utm_medium=email&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_Ui-15B_CcQknU9GEDGXMjBqDrNc-DTSKdHoyu63GuASVBzt71GYE_-e31PGV6S0Mplqp9YfAjLuTlga8VG8STj3QakJsCm2tjyDUB9eTtkUkzkDY&amp;_hsmi=343424237&amp;utm_content=343424237&amp;utm_source=hs_email" target="_blank">Ashwini Bhat: Reverberating Self</a> contains artworks made over the past decade alongside newly made work that has never been shown. The exhibition illustrates her journey since moving to California—creating a new home and securing a sense of belonging through communion with her environment and art making. The artworks evidence Bhat’s technical skill and intuitive approach to diverse materials and techniques, including cast bronze, hand-built ceramics, video works, and an artist-led collaborative community installation. All works on view are part of&nbsp;Assembling California,&nbsp;the artist’s ongoing project of place and self. The series concentrates on natural phenomena including post-fire forests, climate change, large-scale forces, mapping, and relationships. As an immigrant from southern India, Bhat works to find a sense of belonging and self in her home in California. She does this through walking, hiking, and spending time with local ecologists. Bhat’s past is infused into the present and imaginings of possible futures. She weaves time and experience through her sculptures by naming a body of her works depicting California flora after nature spirits, or Yakshis, entities that are part of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religious practices. Bhat firmly roots her practice in recognizing humankind’s interconnectedness with all living beings and places—through contact, communion, and witnessing. She creates sculptures to share moments of her journey—of seeking self within her ecologies and invites viewers to relate to their environments by building relationships and spending time with other beings, human and nonhuman alike. Ashwini Bhat: Reverberating Self

In 2022, RAM organized a landmark exhibition for its street-facing Windows on Fifth Gallery. With artworks chosen from RAM’s collection,&nbsp;<a style="color: var(--link_color);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.ramart.org/exhibit/on-fire-women-glass/" target="_blank">On Fire: Surveying Women in Glass in the Late-Twentieth Century</a>&nbsp;offered a cursory look at how women were shaping glass as an art material in the 1980s and 1990s. The exhibition title alludes to certain techniques of physically working with glass as well as the idea that some artists were innovating and making names for themselves—that they were “on fire” in their art world trajectory. This exhibition, an expanded version of the 2022 show, offers a deeper dive into this vital period in contemporary craft by outlining the concerns of artists who explore the sculptural, visual, metaphorical, and creative potential of glass. Seen through the eyes of women, it reflects developments with the medium as an art material two and three decades after studio glass concepts were being implemented into university programs and contemporary practices. Notably, a portion of the gallery is dedicated to supporting materials, such as images, articles, and books, which offer a broader context for understanding the artists, medium, and field.Glass does not have a single history as it has been used in many different ways. Its usage in a decorative context still exists, but the twentieth century also saw the academic establishment of it as a viable art-making material. This exhibition includes various examples of work produced within the studio glass framework—as self-consciously made art reflecting artistic investigations of materials, processes, and ideas. Artists represented include Sonja Blomdahl, Kimiake Higuchi, Concetta Mason, Flo Perkins, Kari Russell-Pool, Ginny Ruffner, Acquaetta Williams, Ann Wolff, and Toots Zynsky. Expanding on the 2022 exhibition, this iteration also features examples from collaborative teams, such as John Littleton and Kate Vogel and Benjamin Edols and Kathy Elliott. These artists explore numerous topics, including identity, beauty, color, pattern, nature, abstraction, form, the figure, metaphor, process, and the properties and abilities of glass as a material. There is also a range of techniques represented, including blowing, lampworking, casting, fusing, carving, polishing, pâte de verre, assembling, and various surface treatments. In essence, the exhibition summarizes the experimental nature of the artists and studio glass in general. A critic of another recent all-female glass exhibition lamented about needing to draw attention to the fact that all of the artists were women—are they artists first or women first? These conversations can also be limiting as they sidestep more fluid gender dynamics. Yet, in this particular moment in time, it is indeed important to draw attention to components beyond the objects themselves. Who the makers are and how they move through the world influences the work even if it is not the identifiable subject matter.
