River North is Chicago's oldest gallery center, where nearly two dozen galleries still call this district home today. Now associated with many design stores and showrooms, as well as popular restaurants and an ever-growing number of luxury condo and apartment buildings, River North was first started in the late 1970s when several area galleries were drawn to the expansive and dynamic spaces offered by the neighborhood's former manufacturing buildings.
The intersection of Superior and Franklin streets is the nexus of the River North gallery district today. On Saturday mornings (except on major holidays) CGN hosts a free gallery tour in the district 11am-12:30pm. Meet at Fabcakes (714 N Wells.)
Several galleries also stay open late on the first Friday of each month. Opening receptions here for new exhibitions generally take place on the First Friday of January, March, May, July, September and November.
