Her richly layered compositions speculate on communication and miscommunication, drawing attention to how meaning can shift across context and culture.Together, White Hawk and Kent will discuss their artistic influences, conceptual frameworks, and the evolving role of abstraction as a space for cultural reflection, resistance, and reimagination.&nbsp;The evening will be introduced by&nbsp;Megan Baker,&nbsp;Assistant Professor of Anthropology. Dyani White Hawk&nbsp;(Sičáŋǧu Lakota) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Minneapolis. White Hawk was featured in the 2022 Whitney Biennial and the recent solo exhibition Speaking to Relatives at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. She has received awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, Creative Capital, Anonymous Was a Woman, Joan Mitchell Foundation and McKnight Foundation. Her work can be found within collections such as the Guggenheim, Brooklyn Museum, Hirshhorn Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, MoMA, NY, Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Caroline Kent is a Chicago-based visual artist. Kent speculates in both the potential and the limitations of language, and ultimately questions the modernist canon of abstraction. She earned an MFA at the University of Minnesota. She has exhibited widely at sites including the Walker Art Center, The Flag Art Foundation, the DePaul Art Museum, the California African American Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Kent is a 2025 USA Fellow and received the 2025 Aspen Arts Prize for innovation in abstraction.&nbsp;She has received grants from The Pollock Krasner Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, and The Jerome Foundation.&nbsp;Kent is Assistant Professor of Art, Theory and Practice, at Northwestern University.

Drawing on classical still-life traditions, Johnson transforms lush bouquets into dark meditations on human vice, weaving in unsettling modern intrusions such as cell phones, doll artifacts, and even live animals.Together, these works invite viewers into a “garden” that is both sanctuary and snare—where renewal and temptation bloom side by side.

Virtual Artists’ Talk: Susan Isaacson and Katsy Johnson

I collect clothes from resale shops. The coat was too expensive and designed for Paris weather.&nbsp;I visited “my” coat several times. Kimono cut, loose woven wool, perfect fit. Hard to leave it behind… So, I drew it. Another form of ownership.I tailored the coat to my wish with colors, prints, words, more prints. I customized each piece of clothing in the show, to be my own and all about me. With time, as I worked on the many designs and screens, I discovered that they didn’t happen by chance. Many unexpected memories found their way between layers.Anne attended the École Supérieure d'Arts Graphiques Penninghen in Paris. She received her Master’s Degree in Art History from the Sorbonne and her PhD from Northwestern University.&nbsp;She works at her home and in local studios.&nbsp;Anne draws inspiration from her encounters with people, books, objects, landscapes, events, and passing thoughts.I treasure overlooked details. They carry big worlds and make them almost manageable.They show loss through the beauty of what is left and joyful. The immeasurable abundance of life, and my ignorance of most things in it, alarms and dazzles me; with infinite layers, lines, and colors.&nbsp;Printmaking has allowed me to create a library of designs that can transfer across a variety of media. In my case, ceramics and textile. Designs can be mixed, reused and altered. They are friends, markers and narratives in time. The designs transfer between media seamlessly.&nbsp;For me, printmaking is fast and exuberant, or slow and contained just as writing is. I see no difference.&nbsp;These art forms&nbsp;share paper and ink. They delight me with the slight but indelible transformation created when ink presses on the white surface of the paper.&nbsp;Throughout my cheerful, blind walk across artwork, printmaking gives me an illusion of perennity.

Devin Ingram, a Chicago-area artist, husband, and father, creates artwork reflecting his life experiences encompassing tragedy, love, pain, and joy. His diverse artistic approach, utilizing acrylics, oils, ink, pastels, and pencils, demonstrates his commitment to employing readily available materials to convey his artistic vision. The main focus of the Food For Thought Exhibition is to heighten awareness of food insecurity.&nbsp;At least half of all proceeds will go directly to the C and W Foundation, an Evanston-based nonprofit that provides essential access to groceries.&nbsp;The still life genre illustrates portraits of edible subjects that tell stories of meals shared, community, and breaking bread together. This communal ritual is&nbsp;celebrated in paintings of food made from direct observation, which reveal tangible, poetic symphonies of color, shape and texture.&nbsp;&nbsp;Artists: Sheila Cahnman, John Fleck, Ken Minami, Sarah Kaiser-Amaral, David Roberts and Chunbo Zhang.&nbsp;

Nature-Inspired Holiday Art Market

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to A Tragedy of Religious Fanaticism.Her paintings narrate the stories of the contemporary situation of the systematic persecution of the Iranian Baha’i community after the 1979 Iranian revolution. Safajoo's paintings narrate these stories which are a result of her conversations and interviews with the people who were near or in these actual events. Many of the incidents she depicts only exist in the memory of those who experienced them and have no pictorial existence. In many cases if visual records did exist, they have been confiscated by the Iranian authorities in raids of homes. Her depictions are often the first time these events have taken visual form. She records the details of this history. For example, the shoes, clothes, artifacts, and environments seen in her paintings are very close to those that were there in the event.A Tragedy of Religious Fanaticism will be exhibited in the Second Floor Gallery of the Art Center. The opening reception is free and open to the public. This exhibition is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the EAC’s general membership.

A Tragedy Of Religious Fanaticism

This year’s The Block Collects installation features two projects featuring works selected by students:2025 Student AcquisitionThe Block Museum of Art’s collection supports learning across disciplines through exhibitions, research, and class and co-curricular visits. One of the ways we grow this resource is through an annual student-led collecting initiative undertaken by the Block Museum Student Associates (BMSAs), an interdisciplinary group of Northwestern undergraduates. Throughout the academic year, they learn about museum interpretation, gallery teaching, and collecting practices, culminating in their recommending the purchase of one or more works of art that invite sustained looking and multiple avenues of inquiry.The 2024–2025 BMSAs recommended the purchase of three works by artist Chitra Ganesh inspired by images from the comic book series Amar Chitra Katha, which popularizes Indian epics and folklore. These comics seek to educate children in India and across its diaspora on South Asian history, culture, religions, and mythologies. Like many stories written for children, Amar Chitra Katha reinforces conventional models of gender relations and sexuality as well as citizenship, nationalism, religious expression, and public behavior. Ganesh subverts these narrative traditions and their embedded patriarchal norms by constructing alternative worlds where women, girls, and other marginalized communities are empowered. Ganesh has cited canonical and contemporary feminist and queer scholarship as sources of inspiration for her work.

The sculptures imply the ability to move away as needed for protection. Branches, gestural and twisted, rise up the woven vessels of safe enclosure. The vessel form represents a refuge for the human consciousness. The state of this refuge speaks to the condition and needs of the consciousness within. I have been creating sculptural works exploring our relationship with Nature since the early ’90s. I have attempted to share my ideas about our need to create a better relationship with Nature as a way to find peace within ourselves and with each other.”Outta Here will be exhibited in the Second Floor Gallery of the Art Center. This fall, The Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University presents&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://northwestern.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=904f932038284b4d9eea69636&amp;id=80aae993fa&amp;e=ec81127d70" target="_blank">Pouring, Spilling, Bleeding: Helen Frankenthaler and Artists’ Experiments on Paper</a>, on view September 17–December 14, 2025. The exhibition explores how artists have used printmaking—and works on paper more broadly—as a site for experimentation, improvisation, and aesthetic risk. The exhibition centers on the pioneering print practice of&nbsp;Helen Frankenthaler(American, 1928–2011). Known for her signature “soak-stain” technique in painting, Frankenthaler brought a similar sensibility to printmaking, embracing fluidity, chance, and the variable interaction of materials in her works on paper. Her lithographs, etchings, and woodcuts reflect a dynamic, process-oriented approach—what she has described as “pouring, flooding, spilling, bleeding.” The presentation marks the debut of a recent gift of 34 works from the&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://northwestern.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=904f932038284b4d9eea69636&amp;id=4e47ecce69&amp;e=ec81127d70" target="_blank">Helen Frankenthaler Foundation</a>, part of the Frankenthaler Prints Initiative. In 2023, The Block was one of ten university art museums nationally to receive a portfolio of Frankenthaler’s prints and working proofs, along with funding to support interpretation and public engagement.&nbsp; Pouring, Spilling, Bleeding&nbsp;places this new acquisition in dialogue with over 30 works from The Block’s permanent collection, highlighting artists who have similarly challenged the boundaries of control and gesture in their artwork. Prints, drawings, and watercolors by artists of Frankenthaler’s close circle, including&nbsp;Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell,&nbsp;and&nbsp;David Smith, provide a broader&nbsp;context for Frankenthaler’s contributions to postwar abstraction and printmaking. The conversation expands beyond the historical frame of Frankenthaler’s contemporaries, bringing in artists who have since drawn inspiration from Frankenthaler’s approach—Lynda Benglis&nbsp;and&nbsp;Amy Sillman—as well as artists who have welcomed chance and the unexpected in their artistic practice, such as&nbsp;John Cage, Max Gimblett,&nbsp;and Frankenthaler’s studio&nbsp;assistant&nbsp;Kikuo Saito. Curated by&nbsp;Stephanie S.E. Lee, 2024–25 Block Museum Graduate Fellow in Art History, and&nbsp;Corinne Granof, Academic Curator, the exhibition draws from in-depth research, including time spent in the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation archives. There, the curators uncovered visual and textual documentation of Frankenthaler’s collaborative print process, insights that shape the presentation of&nbsp;Divertimento&nbsp;(1983), shown alongside a full suite of working proofs. "In many ways, these working proofs show what the editioned print cannot: they are traces of decision-making, experimentation, and artistic dialogue between Frankenthaler, her circle, and the print workshop. 23rd Annual Winter Arts & Crafts Expo

Currently on display at the Gallery is&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://perspectivegallery.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=04a588cae42ffc5c2d944d823&amp;id=245f4c99b5&amp;e=d73170d386" target="_blank">15 Years In An Instant</a>&nbsp;a mobile installation of instant Polaroid prints curated by members Alexa Frangos, Susan Isaacson and Kathryn Rodrigues. This project came about as part of Perspective Gallery's recent 15th anniversary celebrations. It honors the work of our many current and past members in a tangible manifestation of our diverse artistic expression.&nbsp;15 Years In An Instant&nbsp;also marks time well spent promoting fine art photography within our Chicagoland community. This mobile installation will be on display at the Gallery through December 28, 2025.&nbsp;

The new exhibition, featuring over forty paintings, is on view in our Glencoe gallery through December 31st.Rodger Bechtold's work captures the Midwest landscape in an expressive, painterly style that blurs the line between realism and abstraction. His compositions, filled with vibrant color and seemingly effortless brushstrokes, offer a unique sense of warmth, joy and spaciousness that extends beyond the canvas. Mary Jo O’Gara’s paintings are a study in harmonious layers of color, texture and light. Intentionally uncomplicated and fresh, her richly textured compositions of barns, outbuildings and pastoral landscapes reflect a sense of nostalgia, connection, and space found in her Midwest surroundings.

This Fall, the&nbsp;Elmhurst Art Museum&nbsp;presents&nbsp;Shakkei: Work by Mayumi Lake and Bob Faust,&nbsp;the first major museum exhibition for Chicago-based artists Mayumi Lake and Bob Faust. Lake and Faust are mutually inspired by the Japanese principle of&nbsp;Shakkei&nbsp;(“borrowed scenery”), a design philosophy that incorporates organic features and architectural designs. The artists’ kaleidoscopic works use color and pattern to create immersive optical experiences, interpreting the Eastern concept broadly as a metaphor for empathy, adaptability, and the ability to hold multiple viewpoints simultaneously. The exhibition will feature recent large-scale artworks by Lake and Faust in separate galleries, as well as a collaborative new work combining their design languages. The exhibition is curated by Liz Chilsen, Manager of Exhibitions &amp; Collections, and will be on view at the Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 South Cottage Hill Avenue in Elmhurst, from September 4, 2025 to January 4, 2026. For this exhibition, each artist will bring their own perspective to the concept of&nbsp;Shakkei, reflecting their unique experiences and history. While Lake’s imagery is based on the symbolic floral motifs found in antique Japanese girls’ kimonos, Faust often incorporates the surroundings of the project or exhibition venue into his “wallworks,” creating site-specific perspectives manipulated from digital photographs. The dialogue between artists addresses the intersection of the patterns of everyday life and cultural and social histories. Faust has over 30 years of experience as the principle and creative director of the eponymously named cultural branding studio, Faust. He makes his work with purpose first—to inform, empower and/or instigate in the service and celebration of human difference. Text, patterns, and the ideas of surprise and discovery emerge as throughlines throughout his conceptual art practice that defies categorization and genre. Faust has been recognized nationally and internationally for his inimitable creativity through many prestigious honors including a University of Illinois, College of Fine &amp; Applied Arts, 2022 Distinguished Legacy Award and City of Chicago, 2022 Mayor’s Medal of Honor. Together they founded the non-for-profit Facility: a multi-use creative space in Chicago that seeks to build community and change the world through art and design. Mayumi Lake&nbsp;is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores the ideas of time, memory, and floating between the real and imaginary. With a foundation in photography, she integrates digital images of nature and Japanese textiles into her collages, sculpture, sound, moving images, and installation to expand the narrative of the work and form conceptual layers. Lake’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery, Asia Society, Art in General, and Artists Space in New York; Chicago Artists Coalition and Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago; Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City; Fotografie Forum International in Frankfurt; Cornelius Pleser Galerie in Munich; Galleria PaciArte in Brescia; FOTOAMERICA in Santiago; Witzenhausen Gallery in Amsterdam; and the Setouchi Triennale in Takamatsu. She has published two monographs, Poo-Chi and Ex Post Facto, with Nazraeli Press. Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Art Institute of Chicago, Asia Society, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE)/City of Chicago, the McCormick Place Art Collection/Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA), Video Art World, the Joy of Giving Something Foundation, and Facebook. The McCormick House is one of only three residences designed and built by Mies in the United States – and one of only two open to the public.
