Perspective Gallery is pleased to present "Student Perspectives 2025," our fourteenth annual juried exhibition of photography by Chicago area high school students. This year, 52 images by 47 students were selected for the exhibition from a group of over 750 submitted images.Our juror this year was Matt Silber,&nbsp;a visual artist based in Chicago working in photography, digital imaging, installation and sculpture. He received his MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago and has had solo exhibitions in Spain, Germany and the U.S.. Student Perspectives 2025: Juried Photography Exhibition

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to&nbsp;CAVA | 2025 Later Impressions. The Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists (CA V A) is a not-for-profit organization committed to addressing the needs of artists aged 50+. It is run by a volunteer board representing over 350 artists who are members of the organization. CA V A provides its members with educational programming, community outreach, opportunities to exhibit their work, and social networking events.&nbsp;2025&nbsp;Later Impressions&nbsp;is CA V A’s premiere juried exhibition displaying its members’ most recent work. Featured Artists:&nbsp;Jay Reed, Nancy Van Kanegan, Robert Anderson, J. Erlandson, Dorothy Graden, Jacqueline Ropski, Marco Bendin, and Emily Friel CAVA | 2025 Later Impressions&nbsp;will be exhibited in the First Floor Gallery of the Art Center. The opening reception is free and open to the public. This exhibition is partially funded by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the EAC’s general membership. Petal, Leaf & Beauty

The “Inside/Out” Exhibition at the Grove Gallery in Evanston, IL&nbsp;explores concepts of the window as metaphor. Windows, whether open or closed, represent dualities: freedom vs. constraint, order vs. chaos, and possibility vs. limitation. The window metaphor sets up narrative elements that address boundaries. In some cases, the viewer is outside, looking in. Conversely, the perspective may be from indoors, looking up and out into the horizon. Some paintings are rooted in fantasy, with colorful, surreal characters freely floating in space. Others are purely depictions of light-filled rooms, with curtains billowing in the breeze. The layered meanings within each picture plane keeps viewers guessing, projecting their own narratives onto each scene. A picture window creates the illusion of depth, whether with pure color or with linear perspective. On May 2nd, we will be having an exhibit opening for featured artist Allison Svoboda's show "Preternatural."&nbsp;The opening will run from 5-7 PM and will display Larry's photographic work, which&nbsp;is&nbsp;defined by its blend of sharp and soft focus. 2025 Art Theory and Practice MFA Thesis Exhibition

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to our upcoming exhibition,&nbsp;Friends of Dorothy’s, curated by Emma Rose Gudewicz.&nbsp;The exhibition will be on display from&nbsp;May 24 - June 29, 2025, and will be free and open to the public.&nbsp;Friends of Dorothy’s&nbsp;examines what it is to be queer today, underscoring the artists’ individual experience with queerness. This exhibition seeks to uplift and highlight LGBTQIA+ voices in an uncertain world. The exhibition title&nbsp;Friends of Dorothy’s&nbsp;derives from queer slang in the mid-20th century. At a time when homosexuality was criminalized, many queer individuals used coded language to identify one another safely in public. "Are you a friend of Dorothy?" was a discreet inquiry from one queer individual to another that didn’t risk revealing a queer person’s identity to potentially dangerous people.&nbsp; Amid the regression of societal acceptance and understanding, we reflect on historical queer communities—their unity and resilience—and how their experiences shape the spaces we create today.

Born in 1951, Tobin Fraley spent his first ten years in Seattle, Washington, growing up around his grandfather’s amusement park. In 1962 the family moved to Berkeley, California where Tobin soon discovered his father’s old 35mm Leica along with an enlarger and a few other bits and pieces of darkroom equipment. He is the author of three books on the history of Carousels, a holiday children’s story titled, A Humbug Christmas, plus a photographic exploration of the Reed-Turner Nature Preserve in Long Grove titled, 36 Acres. In addition Fraley exhibits his photography through local galleries, he is a published poet, teaches photography at the Chicago Botanic Garden, and currently owns and operates Woodland Grove Photography Studio &amp; Gallery in Mundelein.

This winter, The Block will celebrate the region’s Indigenous creativity with a major exhibition,&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://northwestern.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=904f932038284b4d9eea69636&amp;id=c2e23bace0&amp;e=64540e863b" target="_blank">Woven Being: Art for Zhegagoynak/Chicagoland</a> Through the collaboration of four artists with connections to Zhegagoynak—Andrea Carlson&nbsp;(Grand Portage Ojibwe/European descent),&nbsp;Kelly Church(Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Tribe of Pottawatomi/Ottawa),&nbsp;Nora Moore Lloyd&nbsp;(Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe), and&nbsp;Jason Wesaw&nbsp;(Pokagon Band of Potawatomi) —Woven Being&nbsp;explores confluences that continue to shape Indigenous creative practices in the region and beyond. Chicagoland is the traditional homeland of the people of the Council of Three Fires— the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, Ho-Chunk, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois nations. It has been a longstanding cultural and economic hub for Indigenous peoples and continues to be today. People from many Indigenous nations call the region home, and the city of Chicago has the third-largest urban Indigenous population in the United States.&nbsp;The richness of Indigenous experiences and contributions are often excluded from Chicago’s art histories.&nbsp;Woven Being&nbsp;counters this by centering the ideas, choices, and voices of Indigenous artists.&nbsp; "How does our understanding of Chicago change when seen through Indigenous perspectives? This exhibition helps shift views about the place Chicagoans call home by revealing Indigenous stories that have been erased or omitted from mainstream narratives." – Jordan Poorman Cocker (Kiowa, Terra Foundation Guest Co-Curator The exhibition presents more than&nbsp;80 artworks by 33 artists&nbsp;active from the mid-20th century to today and includes multiple newly commissioned works. “Just as a black ash basket is given form through the interweaving of many splints,&nbsp;Woven Being&nbsp;was developed through an in-depth collaboration with and between these artists and The Block’s project team,” says Poorman Cocker. This artist-centered approach has resulted in a distinctive exhibition where the artists have shaped a context for their work amid works by other artists of their choosing.&nbsp;Together, the artworks highlight the shared aesthetics, materials, values, communities, and relations of the interconnected artists.&nbsp;The themes of land and waterways, kinship with plants and animals, and Indigenous concepts of time likewise connect the exhibition’s artworks and stories. “These perspectives are central to understanding Chicago’s specific cultural landscape. While our focus is on Indigenous artists of this place, we are also recognizing how they are interconnected with art and artists across the entirety of North America.&nbsp;Woven Being&nbsp;is just one of many stories that could be told about Indigenous art in the Chicagoland region. We want people to walk away recognizing that there’s a lot more to experience and many ways to do that,” added Kathleen Bickford Berzock, exhibition co-curator and Block Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs. "The assignment for us, the organizing artists, was to choose art and artists who've inspired our own works. The resulting exhibition locates our chosen artists and artworks as a network of influence that happens to culminate in and around Chicago.
