On April 17 from 6-8pm The Poetry Foundation will host a poetry reading, artist talk, and reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibition Escaramuza, the Poetics of Home. Free and open to all. The opening will feature an artist talk by Jaeggi, followed by readings by Sáenz and Silva, and closing with a celebratory reception featuring music by Sones de México Ensemble.&nbsp; A window into the subculture of Mexican American women’s equestrian performance, presented through poetry and photography, Escaramuza is a collaborative work by photographer Constance Jaeggi and poets Angelina Sáenz and ire’ne lara silva. The exhibition explores escaramuza, the team sport of women’s precision horse riding, addressing complex themes of identity, family, and gender with a lush combination of poetry and photography.&nbsp; Escaramuza, translated from Spanish as “skirmish,” is the team sport of women’s precision horse riding within charrería—the Mexican national sport of roping, equestrian activities, and working with cattle. Inspired by the soldaderas (women soldiers) of the Mexican Revolution, teams ride sidesaddle during intricately choreographed dances set to music while wearing vivid, traditional Mexican dresses. Escaramuza, the Poetics of Home

Mariane Ibrahim is pleased to present&nbsp;Thus masked, the world has a language, a group exhibition exploring the masquerade and mask traditions across the African diasporas in Mexico, the Caribbean, and the United States.&nbsp;Across the exhibition, masks are activated forms—a vessel through which truths can be expressed, history can be questioned, and memory can be reactivated. The exhibition will feature works by gallery artists Raphaël&nbsp;Barontini&nbsp;and Lorraine O’Grady, alongside invited artists Nick Cave, Ebony G. Patterson, Darryl Richardson, and Tavares Strachan.&nbsp;Through lens-based practices, collage, and sculpture, the artists engage the performative, political, and intergenerational dimensions of masks that bridge geographies and social histories. As a threshold between the visible and the invisible, the archival and the contemporary,&nbsp;African diasporic&nbsp;masquerades are rituals that summon the essence of nature, from the bush and swamp to animals, spirits, foreigners, witches, the past itself, or ancestors —to allow spiritual presence&nbsp;to be embodied for communal and social transformation.&nbsp;&nbsp;As masquerade culture spans between and beyond ritual, carnival, and street processions; ceremoniously the mask becomes a conduit: a threshold to the divine, a channel for the ancestral realm, or a vessel for collective memory. Darryl Richardson and Raphaël&nbsp;Barontini&nbsp;focus on the intersection of communal erasure and recovery, using partial concealment as a strategy to counter erasure and assert diasporic lineage. Their meditations on systemic erasure&nbsp;lead&nbsp;to&nbsp;Encourage from the&nbsp;Fambily&nbsp;series&nbsp;(2010) by Ebony G. Patterson,&nbsp;and&nbsp;sculpture&nbsp;by Nick Cave,&nbsp;that&nbsp;adorn figures&nbsp;whom&nbsp;transform the masked body into a site of reemergence and historical agency. Like&nbsp;Barontini, Tavares Strachan reclaims the archive through collage—but where&nbsp;Barontini&nbsp;gestures&nbsp;toward partial visibility, Strachan leans toward total concealment.&nbsp;Self Portrait: Loyalty to the Past (Blue Guro Mask)&nbsp;2023, emphasizes loyalty to ancestral heritage while addressing the metaphysical complexities of identity and memory, making the mask a statement on resilience and continuity within the African diaspora.&nbsp;Similar to&nbsp;traditional masks, Cave’s&nbsp;Soundsuits&nbsp;are constructed with everyday materials—twigs, sequins, fur, wire. These suits conceal the body entirely, freeing the wearer from assumptions tied to race, class, or gender. Within the context of masquerade, O’Grady’s concealment in&nbsp;Announcement&nbsp;(2020) becomes a vessel of deflection and power—resisting legibility while confronting the demands of visibility and representation. Both Cave and O’Grady activate concealment as a choreography of refusal and renewal.&nbsp;In&nbsp;Thus masked, the world has a language, concealment is not absence—it is redirection, resistance, and transformation. From object to action, the mask’s power lies in its ability to be worn, danced, and inhabited—activating knowledge that is both embodied and inherited. Co-organized by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) and the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) in California, the exhibition embraces the diverse U.S. contexts in which HMong communities have adapted and fabricated homelands. Though specific to Her’s own HMong-American experience,&nbsp;The Imaginative Landscape&nbsp;is a meditation on the construction of homeland that resonates across a variety of diasporic experiences. In both Sheboygan and San Jose, the exhibition will exceed the institutional space with lightboxes in local restaurants and community gathering places, wheat pasted images in public locations, and billboard displays. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago announces&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://visit.mcachicago.org/es/exhibitions/paul-pfeiffer-prologue-to-the-story-of-the-birth-of-freedom/" target="_blank">Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom</a>, opening May 3 and on view until August 31, 2025.&nbsp;Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom&nbsp;is a survey that covers twenty-five years of work from artist Paul Pfeiffer (b. 1966, Honolulu, HI; lives in New York), whose practice interrogates ideas of spectacle, celebrity, and mass culture. The exhibition brings together works from across Pfeiffer’s career, spanning from his early photo and video works to his latest experiments in sculpture and installation.&nbsp;Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom&nbsp;focuses on the artist’s use of media manipulation to reveal audiences’ participation in both adoration and objectification. Mining imagery from our media-saturated world, Pfeiffer recontextualizes global icons such as pop stars, film actors, and athletes through careful acts of cutting, splicing, and masking. Throughout his work, Pfeiffer interrogates what it means to consume images and culture. For Pfeiffer, the basketball court, the boxing ring, and the stadium not only serve as platforms for grand spectacles but as sites where the body politic—of a nation, of a community, of society—is imagined, defined, and contested. Spanning two and a half decades of work, the exhibition features Pfeiffer’s works in the MCA Collection, including&nbsp;Fragment of a Crucifixion (After Francis Bacon)&nbsp;(1999) and&nbsp;Self-Portrait as a Fountain&nbsp;(2000), which is part of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift. This exhibition is the MCA’s fourth that centrally features Pfieffer’s work, following his career-defining solo show&nbsp;Paul Pfeiffer&nbsp;in 2003,&nbsp;MCA Screen: Paul Pfeiffer&nbsp;in 2018, and&nbsp;Fragments of a Crucifixion&nbsp;in 2019.&nbsp;The accompanying catalogue for this exhibition includes an interview from&nbsp;Fragments of a Crucifixionbetween Pfeiffer and former MCA Marjorie Susan Curatorial Fellow Chanon Kenji Praepipatmangkol, and features contributions from University of Chicago Professor Emeritus Tom Gunning, artist Julie Mehretu, and historian Lawrence Chua.&nbsp; Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom&nbsp;is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and curated by Clara Kim, Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, and Paula Kroll, Curatorial Assistant. In the Shadow of Coal&nbsp;will highlight botanical species of the Waukegan Dunes, located along Lake Michigan and adjacent to a coal-fired power plant. The exhibition will draw attention to the environmental injustices caused by the continued contamination of this coal-fired power plant on people and the environment and the immense threat posed to Lake Michigan. The exhibition comprises traditional, contemporary, and abstract botanical art and will be curated through an open-call with three jurors: Heeyoung Kim (who leads the Botanical Academy at Brushwood), a representative from the Driehaus Museum, and a local arts leader from Waukegan. Onsite programming will include an opening and speaking program, an exhibition guide, and guided tours.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s upcoming exhibition&nbsp;<a style="color: rgb(0, 124, 137);" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://mcachicago.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c24ba7c5a91cefd699dc985e1&amp;id=38939d4a2c&amp;e=4ba592fe2a" target="_blank">Pipilotti Rist: Supersubjektiv</a>&nbsp;will open on February 22 and run through September 14, 2025, in the Turner Gallery on the museum’s fourth floor.This exhibition focuses on a single artwork by Pipilotti Rist (b. 1962, Grabs, Switzerland; lives in Zürich, Switzerland), the 2001 video installation&nbsp;Supersubjektiv. In the artwork, Rist takes digital surveillance footage she filmed during a month-long trip to Japan and morphs it into a dream-like space for contemplation and curiosity, pairing the hallucinatory video with an artist-made pillow and sheepskin seating. The artwork examines nature, the built environment, and technology with wide-eyed wonder. While viewing the large-scale, wall-to-wall video, visitors are encouraged to relax in the darkened gallery and listen to its ambient electronic soundtrack, made in collaboration with composer Anders Guggisberg and featuring the familiar sounds of a dial-up internet modem as well as lyrics written and sung by Rist. Made at the turn of the millennium,&nbsp;Supersubjektiv&nbsp;traces Rist’s longing for connection in an increasingly digital and globalized world.Supersubjektiv&nbsp;is part of the D.Daskalopoulos Collection Gift, which was jointly donated to the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2022.&nbsp;Pipilotti Rist: Supersubjektiv&nbsp;is curated by Jason Foumberg, Daskalopoulos Collection Manager. ABOUT THE ARTISTPipilotti Rist (b. 1962, Grabs, Switzerland; lives in Zurich, Switzerland)&nbsp;used her childhood nickname, Lotti, with the first name of the Swedish children’s story character Pippi Longstocking to create her artistic moniker in 1982. She attended the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna from 1982 to 1986 and the Schule für Gestaltung Basel from 1986 to 1988. She produced her first video,&nbsp;I’m Not the Girl Who Misses Much&nbsp;(1986), while still at school in Basel. In it, she bounces up and down, falling out of her dress, as she repeatedly sings the title line (derived from the lyrics to a Beatles song). From 1988 to 1994, she played in a rock band called Les Reines Prochaines, at the same time developing an aesthetic language quite close to that of music videos in her art. The artist appears in many of her own videos and often sings on the soundtracks; her mother, brother, and three sisters frequently assist on the production. Rist has also developed installations such as&nbsp;Flying Room(1995) and&nbsp;Himalaya’s Sister’s Living Room&nbsp;(2000), in which video cameras and monitors are wittily deployed in furnished gallery spaces.Since Rist’s first solo exhibition, in 1984, she has had shows at the Kunstverein in Hamburg, Germany (1995), Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (1996), SITE Santa Fe (1998), Montréal Museum of Fine Arts (2000), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (2001), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2004), Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (2007), and Museum of Modern Art in New York (2008), among other venues. Pipilotti Rist: Supersubjektiv

Domestic in A Foreign Sense&nbsp;is a solo exhibition by José Lerma featuring large-scale portraiture created in thick impasto and limited brush strokes. The title of the exhibition is a transposition of the phrase “foreign in a domestic sense,” which is how US Supreme Court Justice Henry Brown described Puerto Rico in his 1901 decision that placed the island as neither fully part of the United States nor an independent country. This contradictory statement led to years of uncertainty for Puerto Rico. This paradoxical nature is apparent in the artist’s paintings, which feature copious amounts of paint but few brushstrokes, challenging viewers’ expectations of both painting and portraiture. His work uniquely collapses historical and autobiographical elements, creating pieces that are part art history and part personal mythology. With a career spanning over two decades, Lerma’s return to the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is particularly significant, as it was here that he had his first museum exhibition in the 1999 Wisconsin Triennial after earning his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. José Lerma (b. 1971, Spain; lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico) received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2002. He has had over twenty solo exhibitions at galleries such as Kavi Gupta in Chicago, IL, Galerie Xavier Hufkens in Brussels, Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York, NY, and at museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. His works are represented in numerous collections, including the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the Saatchi Collection in London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Domestic in a Foreign Sense

The Wisconsin Triennial is a cornerstone of MMoCA’s exhibition calendar. Every three years the exhibition charts the latest art being made across the state, capturing the richness and variety of artistic expression in Wisconsin. MMoCA’s curatorial staff selected new works of art by established and emerging artists through a rigorous review process beginning with an open call for entries in late September. From the over 250 applications from artists in every corner of the state, more than 30 artists were selected for additional review through an in-person studio visit. The final selection of 24 artists represents a wide range of artistic approaches and subjects. For millennia, the main function of sculpture busts has been to aggrandize nobility and divinity, and to preserve the likeness of distinguished figures. Busted: Contemporary Sculpture Busts

Though titled after the hit television show,&nbsp;White Lotus&nbsp;by Alex Katz bears very little relation to HBO’s dark comedy. Rather, the paintings in this series are guided more by the tools of cinema, through Katz's use of monumental canvas, dramatic lighting, and repeating figures.Opening at GRAY’s Chicago gallery on July 11, 2025,&nbsp;White Lotus&nbsp;is a testament not only to Katz’s nonstop creative output, but also his status as one of the most groundbreaking American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Our Biennial is one of the Midwest’s largest and most prestigious juried exhibitions, offering artists an opportunity to have their work viewed by three talented curators: Chanelle Lacy, Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie, Joe Lanasa, Director/Founder of Fulton Street Collective, and Cortney Lederer, Public Art Consultant and Educator. Our Biennial will be promoted and viewed by hundreds of visitors, including gallerists, curators, and collectors. Cash awards and cash equivalents will be presented at the artists’ reception. Awards, which may include Best of Show and Juror’s Merit categories, are given at the jurors’ discretion. From the final pool of selected applicants, the jurors will also award 3 artists, who have not exhibited at the Evanston Art Center in the past 5 years, with the opportunity to be included in an exhibition in our galleries. Chanelle Lacy is a curator, cultural producer, and Reiki Master. She is also the Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie and the fearless leader of EarlyWork! Passionate about bringing ambitious, rigorous, and challenging projects to life, Chanelle works closely with artists both emerging and established to expand not only their creative practices but the art historical canon at large. Her passion for art and her commitment to amplifying underrepresented and marginalized voices make her a true champion of the arts. Most recently she produced SKIN + MASKS, a blockbuster exhibition crafted in collaboration with musician and activist Vic Mensa, centering works by contemporary artists exploring the elusive essence of identity. Originally presented in a classic gallery setting, SKIN + MASKS traveled to Chicago’s famed Magnificent Mile for a six-month pop-up exhibition presented in partnership with EXPO Chicago and the City of Chicago. In 2021 she curated Realms of Refuge, a group exhibition focused on the alchemical processes that enable us to transcend our earthly entanglements to reach higher states of consciousness, embodiment, and expression. Chanelle forged her path in the arts working at a contemporary gallery where she lent her vision to the program for six years. During three years of her tenure, she held the position of Director. Chanelle continues to be a force, serving as a trusted advisor. Cortney Lederer is a public art consultant and educator with over twenty years of experience managing artistic programming for foundations and organizations. Cortney has curated installations by notable artists such as Jacob Hashimoto (2019) and Olafur Eliasson (2021) at th Willis Tower and Luftwerk at the landmark Chicago Board of Trade Building (2024). She served as the art advisor for E(art)H Chicago, (2023) an initiative supported by the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF), providing $700,000 in grants to artists to inspire new ways of thinking about environmental responsibility in neighborhoods across Chicago. This summer, she launched a new public art initiative for the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (2024) connecting people to nature through 30 art installations across the city. Cortney is currently serving as the public art consultant for the Chicago Park District to design and manage an RFP for artist responses to contested monuments on parkland through installations, onsite programming, and activations. She is also the Public Art Consultant for the City of Wichita, managing three, new public artworks for the Arkansas River Improvement Project. Most recently, she worked with a team of planning consultants hired by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) to develop a community-engaged, pilot cultural and historical marker program. This pilot program celebrates the city’s cultural heritage by sharing untold stories and events through artist-designed markers. Cortney is an Associate Professor, Adj., in the Arts Administration and Policy department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and serves on the board of Arts of Life and Every House Has a Door. Joe Lanasa is one of the founding members and the current director of the Fulton Street Collective. He created FSC in late 2002, along with his amazingly talented friend, Anna Fermin. Their original vision still holds true today, which is to host a community of creative, talented people, and give them the resources they need to support and cultivate their art so that they can enrich the lives of others and become part of the greater community. Joe is also a street poet, songwriter, rock musician singer, and guitarist, performing in mostly Chicago-area clubs for over ten years now. His musical influences include a crazy blend of brilliant performers, including Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Scott Momenthy, Iggy Pop, early Springsteen, Marty Robbins, Elvis, Van Morrison, and Bob Marley. In addition, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view nine original works by the legendary artist.
