The annual exhibition highlights paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics, prints, animation, and multimedia work by young artists participating in&nbsp;Hyde Park Art Center’s Teen programs. Each year, Teen programs provide a structured independence that encourages young artists to develop their creative voices, learn new skills, and build relationships in the context of a community art center, where artists of all ages and backgrounds do the same. The exhibition is a testament to these young artists’ evolution and dedication. In&nbsp;Alchemy,&nbsp;Walker retreats to the analog with the meditative process of wet plate collodion photography. His botanical studies move beyond traditional decorative imagery, conjuring&nbsp;resilience from the dormant and damaged.

In&nbsp;A World Undone,&nbsp;Shur brings us semi-abstract, digital composites that place familiar forms in uncomfortable or unlikely spaces. The images speak to the notion that the world, as we know it, is becoming increasingly splintered and fractured.&nbsp;The resulting compositions hold a deep sense of psychological unease and societal volatility.

You may have noticed a sign for the Jane Addams Research Center next to the deep red exterior of a two-storey building along Main Street in St. Joseph. This quiet organization was founded by scholars Michael R. Hill and his late life-partner Mary Jo Deegan. Its focus on the historic sociologist, settlement leader, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams and her influential network of male and female colleagues has taken many forms, including an expansive collection of artworks resulting from the expertise, training, and inspiration of the art school at the Hull-House social settlement in Chicago (Hull commemorates the name of the home’s original owner). The Hull-House Art School, established by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, with Enella Benedict as its first director, provided classes and studio space for youngsters and adults alike from 1893 onward to the 1960s. It was an important, but underappreciated, cultural phenomenon in Chicago. In this exhibition, artworks range from functional to fine art and include commemorative medallions, artist-illustrated books and calendars, novels, jewelry, metalwork, fabrics, ceramics, prints, maps, drawings, and paintings. These works — from the late eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century — represent the deep impact contributed by a community art center and highlight the affiliated artists who made them.&nbsp;While some are little known, several artists in the exhibition are prominent in Chicago collections (including the Art Institute of Chicago) and are found in museums, homes, and other repositories throughout the United States. Michael R. Hill has curated the exhibit and is preparing an exhibition catalog. 25th Anniversary Benefit Auction

Impressionist artist Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894)—known and beloved by many Art Institute visitors for his monumental painting&nbsp;Paris Street; Rainy Day—takes center stage in this major exhibition exploring the very personal interests and relationships that shaped his world. Caillebotte was unique among his Impressionist peers. At a time when modernity was synonymous with fashionable young women and new forms of entertainment, he focused instead on a more intimate and individualized sphere: his family and friends, his fellow sportsmen, the bourgeois pedestrians strolling in his neighborhood, and the workers who came to his house or whom he observed in the street. Despite being born into the wealth built by his father, Caillebotte resisted the idleness associated with the leisured class. He was not only an active member of the Impressionist group but also participated in several activities as a high-level amateur, including rowing, gardening, and sailing. In all of his pursuits, Caillebotte gave his all, taking on the role of leader, organizer, and sometimes financier; he also captured these passions in paint, whether documenting the toil of boating, the serenity of tending a plant, or the concentration of a card game. Caillebotte was equally invested in his personal relationships, both familial and non-familial—and again these relationships, especially with the males he interacted with as son, brother, employer, colleague, and friend—are the focus of many of his artworks. One sees in multiple paintings his two brothers and other family members as well as a wide circle of friends, often depicted in Caillebotte’s own home—in a favorite chair, by a recognizable window, or on an often-portrayed sofa. Most intimately, and most unusually for the time, Caillebotte also painted nude men in the privacy of their bath.&nbsp; This exhibition, which opened at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in October 2024, includes more than 120 works—paintings, works on paper, photographs, and other ephemera from throughout Caillebotte’s career. In addition to recognizable works like&nbsp;Floor Scrapers&nbsp;and the Art Institute’s&nbsp;Paris Street; Rainy Day,&nbsp;the show presents lesser-known but pivotal works like the Musée d’Orsay’s recent acquisition,&nbsp;Boating Party, and the Louvre Abu-Dhabi’s&nbsp;The Bezique Game, as well as many works from private collections that are rarely seen by American audiences.&nbsp; Together, these works open a new window onto Caillebotte—as a complex figure with many interests, as an Impressionist who painted like no other Impressionist, and as an artist who captured his own, very distinct Paris. Belonging: The Art of American Fraternal Societies

South Gallery Audrey Niffenegger is a multifaceted American writer, visual artist, and academic whose work bridges storytelling, printmaking, and book arts. She studied visual art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned an MFA from Northwestern University’s Department of Art Theory and Practice in 1991. Niffenegger’s artistic practice centers on handmade artist’s books and printmaking. Beginning in the early 1980s, she produced limited-edition works such as&nbsp;The Adventuress&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Three Incestuous Sisters, which combined original etchings with narrative text. These projects established her reputation in the book arts world and were later reproduced in trade editions, bringing her visual storytelling to a wider audience. She has also created graphic works like&nbsp;The Night Bookmobile&nbsp;and&nbsp;Raven Girl, which was adapted into a ballet by the Royal Opera House in London. In 1994, she co-founded the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to print, paper, and bookmaking. Her prints, drawings, and artist’s books have been exhibited widely and are held in collections such as the Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, British Library, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2019, she founded Artist Book House, a nonprofit in Chicago dedicated to the creation, teaching, and celebration of book arts. Her imagery often explores themes of time, memory, mortality, and the uncanny, weaving together visual narrative and psychological depth. Niffenegger continues to balance her parallel careers in visual art and fiction, creating work that merges image, narrative, and imagination into singular, multidisciplinary forms. Gut Symmetry, an exhibition of paintings and prints by Chicago artist Catherine Sollman, opens at OS Projects on August 9, 2025. The exhibition continues through October 11, 2025. OS Projects will host a reception for the artist from 1 – 3 pm on Saturday, August 9. Catherine Sollman uses basic shapes to create abstract forms that refer to the human body or environment, both natural and built. Her work is characterized by precision as well as unconventional color combinations that she often pushes toward garishness in pursuit of a particular vibrational quality. Gut Symmetry comprises two bodies of work: small gouache paintings and monotypes, which are one-of-a-kind prints. The paintings are predicated on a limited set of rules and tools—straightedge, compass, pencil and gouache—and have evolved to occupy an important place in Sollman’s practice. They are an investigation of form, color and relationships as well as an attempt to trigger pulsations between color and shape. Sollman describes them as “a quest for sensation.” While the gouache paintings are created directly and intuitively, the monotypes incorporate an element of chance using ghost prints, migrating motifs and the reuse and reconfiguration of the printed surface or matrix. Their imagery hints at bodily structures, the exchange of matter and the tension between exuberant impulse and the need to withhold. They reflect Sollman’s ongoing interest in exploring print’s capacity to accommodate abstraction, chance, mood and iteration while allowing for formality and humor. Both the gouache paintings and monotype prints in Gut Symmetry function as loci of experimentation for the artist. They are also a meditation on antiquated notions of femininity, impropriety, rightness and order. Within each, Sollman strives to facilitate a type of presence—a small escape, a work that soothes and surprises, a portal to somewhere else. About the Artist Born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin, Catherine Sollman is a printmaker and teaching artist whose practice consists of small-scale abstract works on paper that emphasize geometry and color play. She earned her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and continued her studies with Karen Kunc, Terry James Conrad, Katie Baldwin and other notable printmakers. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the U.S. including the Highpoint Center for Printmaking (Minneapolis, MN), Mixografia (Los Angeles, CA), Print Austin (Austin, TX) and Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago, IL). She was a 2024 Artist-in-Residence at Weir Farm National Historic Park (Wilton, CT) and will be a 2026 Artist-in-Residence at Peninsula School of Art (Fish Creek, WI). Main / Office Galleries Lora Fosberg is an American artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, printmaking, drawing, and sculpture. She received her BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992. Lora Fosberg’s work speaks to the power of form, the capacity of iconography to create a universal language that communicates the banalities and complexities of the human experience. Fosberg’s process is deeply anthropological, bound up in the intricacies and intimacies of human life—memories, emotions, our relationships with others and with nature. Disarming her viewers through familiar imagery and language in her work, often rendered in an accessible, animated manner, with a touch of cheeky humor, Fosberg affords them the space to regress to a particular memory, a moment of understanding, a conflict, an absence, a connection to another person, or to nature.​ Her work has been featured in venues across the Midwest and West Coast including the South Bend Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Hyde Park Art Center and international venues in Copenhagen and London. Fosberg’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Illinois State Museum, Eaton Corporation, and Kirkland &amp; Ellis, as well as numerous private collections. She lives and works in Michigan City, Indiana.

About Robin Wall Kimmerer Robin Wall Kimmerer&nbsp;is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is the author of&nbsp;The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants&nbsp;and&nbsp;Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses.&nbsp;She lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. The Serviceberry As Indigenous scientist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most?&nbsp;Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth—its abundance of sweet, juicy berries—to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution insures its own survival.&nbsp;&nbsp;As Kimmerer explains, “Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency.” Braiding Sweetgrass As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In&nbsp;Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise” (Elizabeth Gilbert).&nbsp;Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, a mother, and a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings—asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass—offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices.&nbsp;&nbsp;In a rich braid of reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.
