Since 1996, ATA has sponsored a biennial, juried exhibition known as the&nbsp;American Tapestry Biennial. This juried exhibition highlights the best of contemporary hand-woven tapestry featuring work by artists from across the U.S. exploring the many artistic possibilities of the medium. Work in the exhibition includes not only artists who work within more traditional definitions of tapestry but also those artists whose work expands upon the core principles of the medium as it explores new techniques and processes.&nbsp;The exhibition is accompanied by the Teitelbaum Award which recognizes two outstanding contributions to the field. Lialia Kuchma, a Chicago artist living and working in Ukrainian Village, was awarded first place for her work titled,&nbsp;Ukraine War #4, which reflects upon her home-country’s struggle. SoNa Chicago Contemporary Art is proud to host the culminating exhibition of the&nbsp;Industry of the Ordinary (IOTO) Summer Residency 2025, opening Saturday,&nbsp;September 6th, and running through&nbsp;September 27th, 2025. Now in its&nbsp;eighth year, IOTO's enduring and ever-evolving program continues to offer a platform for critical experimentation and bold expression by emerging artists. The 2025 residency expands its reach with a three-week public exhibition, offering viewers an extended opportunity to engage with the fresh, challenging, and diverse perspectives produced over the course of this unique summer program. For the first time, the show will take place at&nbsp;SoNa Chicago, creating a new context for these artists to consider the economic and spatial realities of exhibiting work professionally — including the opportunity to offer work for sale. At the opening on Saturday, September 6th from 5–8pm, all 15 residents will activate the full site of the exhibition address - moving beyond the traditional white cube to engage both interior and exterior spaces. Visitors can expect a mix of time-based, performative, and spatial interventions alongside two- and three-dimensional works, continuing the Residency’s longstanding commitment to diverse and experimental practices. An additional artist walkthrough will take place on Saturday, September 13th from 5–7pm, offering deeper insight into the artists’ processes and the evolution of the work. At its core, the IOTO Summer Residency is rooted in the belief that&nbsp;art has the unique power to bring diverse voices together, revealing new dimensions of what it means to be human. The program is structured around intensive studio development, open discussion, and critical inquiry — with weekly meetings and mentorship from&nbsp;Industry of the Ordinary, whose own practice challenges the boundaries between the personal and the public, the ordinary and the extraordinary. Housed primarily at IOTO’s studio at&nbsp;Mana Contemporary&nbsp;in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, the residency invites participants to develop new work across a variety of media while engaging in deep conversations around process, form, value, and impact. This year's cohort reflects the spirit of the program: intellectually curious, materially adventurous, and socially aware. Their work, shaped through both individual exploration and group dialogue, invites us to consider not only artistic outcomes but also the systems of meaning and connection through which those outcomes arise. Since its founding in 2015, the IOTO Summer Residency has cultivated a space for radical questioning and creative rigor. Oliva Gallery invites you to experience Holding Space, a group exhibition featuring artists Jan Nakao, Laurie LeBreton, and Macus Alonso. Each artist approaches their work as a form of care, reflection, and experimentation in holding space for complex emotions and cultural memory.The exhibition brings together painting, sculpture, and installation to ask how we process what we carry, and how materials help us release, remember, or transform. Rooted in each artist’s distinct background, Holding Space centers process over polish and meaning over spectacle.Jan Nakao: Painting from the Unconscious Jan Nakao, trained as a Jungian psychoanalyst, creates paintings guided by images from the collective unconscious. Her practice draws from decades of work in the field of psychological trauma and is shaped by intuition and the internalized “third hand”. The result is a body of abstract work rich with emotional depth and symbolic resonance. Nakao holds a Diplomate in Jungian Analysis from the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago (2005) and degrees from the University of Illinois at Chicago and Champaign-Urbana.Laurie LeBreton: Sculptural Forms of Renewal Working with handmade paper and natural materials, Laurie LeBreton constructs large-scale installations that reference ritual garments, natural growth, and inner transformation. Her sculptural work operates in the space between delicacy and resilience. These forms test the boundaries of material and meaning, offering viewers meditative entry points into the emotional and spiritual dimensions of healing.Macus Alonso: Geometry, Body, and Cultural Memory Macus Alonso’s geometric abstractions investigate structure, rhythm, and movement through color and form. A central theme in Alonso’s practice is the relationship between the body and spatial construction, drawn from multicultural influences and grounded in personal narrative. The annual exhibition highlights paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics, prints, animation, and multimedia work by young artists participating in&nbsp;Hyde Park Art Center’s Teen programs. Each year, Teen programs provide a structured independence that encourages young artists to develop their creative voices, learn new skills, and build relationships in the context of a community art center, where artists of all ages and backgrounds do the same. The exhibition is a testament to these young artists’ evolution and dedication. So, What Now?

You may have noticed a sign for the Jane Addams Research Center next to the deep red exterior of a two-storey building along Main Street in St. Joseph. This quiet organization was founded by scholars Michael R. Hill and his late life-partner Mary Jo Deegan. Its focus on the historic sociologist, settlement leader, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams and her influential network of male and female colleagues has taken many forms, including an expansive collection of artworks resulting from the expertise, training, and inspiration of the art school at the Hull-House social settlement in Chicago (Hull commemorates the name of the home’s original owner). The Hull-House Art School, established by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, with Enella Benedict as its first director, provided classes and studio space for youngsters and adults alike from 1893 onward to the 1960s. It was an important, but underappreciated, cultural phenomenon in Chicago. In this exhibition, artworks range from functional to fine art and include commemorative medallions, artist-illustrated books and calendars, novels, jewelry, metalwork, fabrics, ceramics, prints, maps, drawings, and paintings. These works — from the late eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century — represent the deep impact contributed by a community art center and highlight the affiliated artists who made them.&nbsp;While some are little known, several artists in the exhibition are prominent in Chicago collections (including the Art Institute of Chicago) and are found in museums, homes, and other repositories throughout the United States. Michael R. Hill has curated the exhibit and is preparing an exhibition catalog. Impressionist artist Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894)—known and beloved by many Art Institute visitors for his monumental painting&nbsp;Paris Street; Rainy Day—takes center stage in this major exhibition exploring the very personal interests and relationships that shaped his world. Caillebotte was unique among his Impressionist peers. At a time when modernity was synonymous with fashionable young women and new forms of entertainment, he focused instead on a more intimate and individualized sphere: his family and friends, his fellow sportsmen, the bourgeois pedestrians strolling in his neighborhood, and the workers who came to his house or whom he observed in the street. Despite being born into the wealth built by his father, Caillebotte resisted the idleness associated with the leisured class. He was not only an active member of the Impressionist group but also participated in several activities as a high-level amateur, including rowing, gardening, and sailing. In all of his pursuits, Caillebotte gave his all, taking on the role of leader, organizer, and sometimes financier; he also captured these passions in paint, whether documenting the toil of boating, the serenity of tending a plant, or the concentration of a card game. Caillebotte was equally invested in his personal relationships, both familial and non-familial—and again these relationships, especially with the males he interacted with as son, brother, employer, colleague, and friend—are the focus of many of his artworks. One sees in multiple paintings his two brothers and other family members as well as a wide circle of friends, often depicted in Caillebotte’s own home—in a favorite chair, by a recognizable window, or on an often-portrayed sofa. Most intimately, and most unusually for the time, Caillebotte also painted nude men in the privacy of their bath.&nbsp; This exhibition, which opened at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in October 2024, includes more than 120 works—paintings, works on paper, photographs, and other ephemera from throughout Caillebotte’s career. In addition to recognizable works like&nbsp;Floor Scrapers&nbsp;and the Art Institute’s&nbsp;Paris Street; Rainy Day,&nbsp;the show presents lesser-known but pivotal works like the Musée d’Orsay’s recent acquisition,&nbsp;Boating Party, and the Louvre Abu-Dhabi’s&nbsp;The Bezique Game, as well as many works from private collections that are rarely seen by American audiences.&nbsp; Together, these works open a new window onto Caillebotte—as a complex figure with many interests, as an Impressionist who painted like no other Impressionist, and as an artist who captured his own, very distinct Paris.
