A Modest Pile: Sean Patrick Hannaway

Vibrance is an exhibition illuminated by movement, identity, and the electric pulse of human connection. Featuring four Chicago based artists, photography, paintings, and neon glass sculptures transform the gallery into a living atmosphere, one saturated with color, rhythm, intimacy, and unapologetic presence. Presented during Pride Month, Vibrance serves as both celebration and declaration: an affirmation of life, visibility, and the triumphs continually forged through collective resilience and self-expression. Spencer Gale constructs abstract neon sculptures that bend light into emotional architecture. His luminous and organic forms activate the surrounding environment, dissolving the boundary between object and observer.&nbsp;Photographer Francisco Malave turns his lens toward the nightlife culture. Navigating the dim corners of clubs and gay bars, Malave captures fleeting moments often hidden from public memory. His photographs reveal beauty within spaces society deems to remain unseen, preserving the spirit of nightlife not as spectacle, but as sanctuary. Painter Devon James approaches the human form as both landscape and language. Through fluorescent palettes, layered patterns, and intertwined humanoid figures, the work explores intimacy, coexistence, and the beauty found within human connection. Bodies merge and interlock within surreal compositions, suggesting the fragile yet powerful ways individuals influence and shape one another. Interdisciplinary artist Connor Young, presents paintings from his ongoing series, Killer Queen, a response to the right wing’s legislative attacks on Drag performers, queer spaces and forms of expression. In response to this, Young leans into the stereotypes that conservatives project onto Drag performers, depicting drag queens and queer icons in bright, saturated colors, with exaggerated, and often humorous poses and features.&nbsp; Together, these artists construct a bright dialogue centered on visibility, liberation, and communal energy. Vibrance explores the conditions that allow individuals to express themselves most freely, while honoring the cultural spaces, histories, and creative communities that make such expression possible. Rooted within the spirit of Chicago, the exhibition invites viewers into a world where light becomes language, color becomes emotion, and difference becomes connection.&nbsp;&nbsp;

My biomorphic imagery in this exhibition hinges on the comic with its gestural, voluminous – yet ambiguous forms. It is an inner world that is dreamlike – you know what it might be, but you’re not sure. The narratives are riddles with no clearly defined answer, allowing the interpretation of the viewer to be singular and as correct as the next.I have included a variety of sizes of panels in this exhibition to not only show my range, but also because I like the rhythmical play created by the juxtaposition of works. Viewers may also notice a cohesive thread of color between all the paintings. This was achieved by working on several works at the same time – carrying over colors from one panel to the next.-Denise PresnellMy current work contains two series: “Unrestrained Ambiguity” and “Extreme Makeovers – Painting Edition. Both series share some common threads, such as color palette, biomorphic forms, gestural lines, and a strong sense of motion. The subject matter is up for grabs – it’s all in the eye of the beholder. I’ve learned that what I see as a ‘horse’ is a ‘kitty’ to others. I am okay with the open interpretation. I like offering an open invitation for the viewer to explore the work from their imagination.Using a limited palette ties one work to another. I’ve developed a deeper relationship with color as a powerful vehicle of emotion. I’ve taken cues from the masters of color- Rothko, Matisse, Bonnard, and many more. Equally powerful in my method is the use of automatic, gestural line. Compositions are found through the automatic lines without a preconceived image or plan. Working from this standpoint has been extremely freeing for me.I enjoy working on panels that have many older paintings under them, leaving something from the older work in the newest iteration. It’s a family of paintings. I like using oil and cold wax on panel because of the ability to dig down through the painted surfaces. My love for tactile surfaces harkens back to my years of intaglio printmaking.Denise&nbsp;is a painter originally from Nebraska, currently living in Sheboygan, WI. She earned a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Nebraska and an MFA in Painting from the Pennsylvania State University. Graduate school was followed by a career of teaching art on the college level. Denise’s artwork has been exhibited in over 300 exhibitions, which include solo, invitational, group, and juried exhibitions in the United States, Tokyo, Botswana, Kenya, and Shanghai. Her work is in numerous private collections in the United States and abroad. A desire to open the space to uncover the reality living deep within.”&nbsp;-Barbara Nessim&nbsp;Since the 1960s, Barbara Nessim (b. 1939) has developed a unique visual language in painting and drawing that challenges traditional gender norms. As one of the first women to gain prominence in the male-dominated world of commercial art and illustration, Nessim’s work confronts stereotypes about femininity and sexuality, while also celebrating the agency of women. In every facet of her work—whether as a visual artist, illustrator, designer, teacher, or archivist—Nessim’s practice is guided by an insatiable curiosity, driving her to continually explore new ideas, techniques, and mediums. A pioneer in computer art during the 1980s, Nessim has had an impact far beyond the art world, including fashion, advertising, and pop culture. By consistently challenging norms and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression, Nessim continues creating work that is as relevant and resonant today as it was when she first began her career.&nbsp;Barbara Nessim’s solo exhibition at DePaul Art Museum—her first one in Chicago—includes paintings, drawings, computer art prints, a site specific installation, with special emphasis on the artist’s sketchbooks or her “forever books,” as she calls them, which have been instrumental to her creative process. “The books tell the story, they see it all, the good parts, the bad, and the ugly. Louis De Guzman (b. 1989) is a Filipino-American award-winning visual artist and designer who creates artwork that merges his past with his present. Over the last decade, De Guzman has proved himself as a true multidisciplinary artist by blending both traditional and experimental techniques in his work. His signature geometric abstraction style often blends together images and stories that represent his family's immigrant journey, as well as his own experience as a second-generation Filipino American. De Guzman's career has led him to create well-received original bodies of work as well as interpretations of licensed intellectual property.“The idea for this exhibition stems from the sentiment that as individuals, we all carry ideas within our core memories. I wanted to share visual anecdotes—specifically from our studio—for attendees to walk into a space to get a glimpse into ambience that the team and I are surrounded by each and every day. Excerpts of Imagination | Louis De Guzman

What is the difference between “looking” and “seeing”? How is meaning made and how do forms signify? These questions have concerned Chicago-based artist Alice Tippit (b. 1975) for more than a decade. Her paintings and works on paper generate multiple layers of meaning through poetic techniques like metaphor, serving as indirect references rather than clear, straightforward representations. The images in Tippit’s paintings float between the familiar and the enigmatic––recognizable forms and shapes are removed from any clear context or obvious meaning. The International Museum of Surgical Science and Stephanie Sack present a one-night-only screening of David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Experience David Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers in one of Chicago’s most unforgettable screening locations: the Hall of Immortals at the International Museum of Surgical Science. A master of body horror, psychological dread, and the messy relationship between flesh, identity, and technology, David Cronenberg has spent his career turning the human body into a site of transformation, terror, and desire. With Dead Ringers, his 1988 masterpiece, Cronenberg created one of his most elegant and disturbing visions: a film where medicine, desire, and obsession collapse into one another with surgical precision. Co-presented by the International Museum of Surgical Science and local programmer Stephanie Sack, this ultra-rare Chicago presentation brings Dead Ringers to a setting that feels almost uncannily designed for the film. Surrounded by imposing statues honoring major figures in medical history, audiences will encounter Cronenberg’s work not simply as a screening, but as a site-specific experience where twentieth-century cinema and millennia of medical history collide. The evening invites only 50 lucky attendees to consider flesh as subject, mystery, and battleground, and to confront the long, complicated history of women’s bodies inside medical spaces: examined, interpreted, pathologized, desired, surveilled, and controlled. Inside the Hall of Immortals, Dead Ringers becomes more than a film about twin doctors unraveling. It becomes a confrontation with the legacies of medical power and the bodies that power has claimed to know. A rare film. A singular venue. One night only. Dead Ringers at the International Museum of Surgical Science will be an unforgettable evening of scenery, cinema, and cervixes. The body has always been contested territory. Legislated, pathologized, fetishized, disciplined—the body and its desires have rarely been left in peace, let alone in the control of the people who inhabit them. With this perennial conflict in mind, and on the occasion of Pride Month, ARC Gallery is pleased to present Body Sovereignty, a group exhibition of works that collectively investigate questions of bodily autonomy, and how that autonomy—or lack thereof—impacts corporeal and sexual expression. Curated by Danni O’Brien (she/they), a queer, interdisciplinary artist based outside Baltimore, Body Sovereignty brings together nearly 40 artists’ works that claim radical ownership over sexuality, desire, and bodily identity. This exhibition showcases art that refuses to be tamed; work that finds the erotic in the accidental, the absurd, the domestic, and the discarded; work that borrows the visual language of instruction and mechanism only to subvert it; work that is bold in its irreverence, polymorphic in its affect, and unafraid to blur lines between innocence and perversion, function and fantasy, the handmade and the found. The art included in Body Sovereignty spans mediums, including art assembled from cultural cast-offs, scavenged and repurposed into something fantastical and alive. Art that is cheeky and meditative in equal measure. Art that takes months to resolve what was gathered intuitively, that which arrives slowly at something unsettling and true. In these artists' hands, the body isn’t treated as mere subject matter, but as a site of survival. Body Sovereignty is not about shock. Her work grapples with queer identity, dystopian survival, and conspicuous consumption — playful and absurd on the surface, deeply meditative underneath. O’Brien has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, Asya Geisberg Gallery, Hamiltonian Gallery, and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, and has held residencies with The Wassaic Project, Baltimore Clayworks, the Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency, Byrdcliffe Colony, and Stove Works, among others. She is the recipient of Individual Artist Grants from the Belle Foundation for Cultural Development and the Maryland State Arts Council. This body of work utilizes the performative self-portrait as a feminist act of claiming space, rewriting boundaries, and reimagining what it means to belong. Begun over five years ago,&nbsp;Homesick&nbsp;examines the contrast of Rodrigues’ multinational, transient upbringing with her current life parenting in a Chicago suburb. The images embody a spectrum of emotions: dark humor, maternal frustration, yearning, and hopefulness. They reveal both comfort and discomfort, acknowledging the contradictions of domesticity as both refuge and constraint. Kathryn Rodrigues: Homesick

The John D. Nichols Collection is now on display. Come and explore the largest exhibit and public sale of ancient Chinese tomb pottery in North America. The exhibit is museum-like in its breadth and presentation, ranging from 4000-year-old Neolithic jars to Ming Dynasty equestrian figures. All pieces are now online with complete photosets, descriptions, and pricing. About The Collection The John D. Nichols Collection includes over two hundred pieces of terra cotta pottery and bronzes spanning the period between 2000 BCE and 1000 CE, mostly from archeological sites in Northern China. The pieces are very diverse, including vessels, human figures, animals, architectural models, and ritual objects. All were buried for the afterlife, their locations forgotten over thousands of years. As China developed in the 1990's and early 2000's, large new buildings were erected in the oldest inhabited areas, requiring deep excavations. Many of these construction sites yielded ancient artifacts. Frenzied global interest followed, with excavated pieces first heading to Hong Kong and eventually to collectors in Paris, New York and Chicago. Legal restrictions followed and by 2009, importation to the US was all but banned by treaty. Ancient Chinese pottery is now rarely seen outside of museums.

Echoes of the Afterlife

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) is pleased to presentBetween Voice and Silence, an international group exhibition on view May 1 throughJune 28, 2025. The exhibition brings together three artists, Katya Lisova (Kyiv), MatviiVaisberg (Kyiv), Ira Bondarenko (Ann Arbor), whose works in textiles, printmaking, ceramics, and fiber examine empathy, resilience, and the endurance of cultural identity against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war on Ukraine.The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Ukrainian poet Maksym Kryvtsov(1990–2024), who was killed defending his country in January 2023, only months after the publication of his debut collection. His writing, which locates tenderness and humanity amid destruction, serves as a moral and artistic touchstone for the works on view.Between Voice and Silence&nbsp;takes its title Maksym’s poem “In that space between Voice and Silence” and alludes to the liminal space that defines wartime experience and the territory between what can be said and what is rendered unspeakable. The exhibition reflects on the limits and power of human agency in the face of overwhelming force. <a href="https://www.evanstonartcenter.org/exhibitions/thinking-through-tapestry-american-tapestry-alliance" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Thinking Through Tapestry</a>&nbsp;is a juried exhibition featuring work that celebrates, explores, and builds upon specialized techniques often associated with tapestry.&nbsp;Selected artists&nbsp;explore techniques that consist of discontinuous weft-faced woven processes rooted in tapestry techniques, such as wedge weave, pulled tapestry, the use of hachures, or other structures, including the H.V. (Handarbetets Vänner) technique. The exhibition highlights work illustrating the close relationship between tapestry weaving, drawing, painting, and sculpture.&nbsp;The jurors of the exhibition are Emily Silver and Erin M. Riley.Emily Silver lives and works in Los Angeles and is on the faculty at Santa Monica College in the Sculpture Department and the Director/Curator of the Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery. She is also the co-founder of L.A. Tactile Lab, along with Svetlana Shigroff and Liv Aanrud.Erin M. Riley is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work focuses on women and women’s issues primarily in hand-woven, hand-dyed wool tapestries.
