Where we dwell

Roger Carlson worked at The Friends of Community Public Art in Joliet, painting murals, working with oil-based clay sculpture, glass and ceramic tile mosaics. He also worked at Marsha Lega Studio, making sculptures out of stainless-steel sheets with different grinding finishes as well as stainless-steel mirror and picture frames, tabletops, and wall panels. Roger studied graphic design and fine art at Joliet Junior College and University of St. Francis. He incorporates both traditional painting and graphic design in his paintings, which are created in reverse on plexiglass using acrylic paint, spray paint, paint marker, and ink.

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.evanstonartcenter.org/exhibitions/try-remember-karen-perl" target="_blank">Try to Remember | Karen Perl</a>On July 8th, the Evanston Art Center will open an exhibition showcasing the works of Karen Perl, an Evanston based artist.At around the age of 13, I inherited a box of paints and some brushes. I knew absolutely nothing about oil paints. But I had an image in my head of a thick wooded area with a path running through the center. A person was walking down the path. This coincidence of the acquisition of the painting materials and the presence of the inner vision ignited my desire to paint. Here was a means of describing something that I could not express in words. I spent several years attending various colleges, intermittently studying physics and psychology, before getting a degree in drawing and painting, with an emphasis on the figure, from the School of the Art Institute in 1985. During my third year of art school, I attended the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland, where I worked primarily from dreams and imagination. I also spent several years in the South of France cultivating a practice of setting up my easel outside and painting the landscape. I currently work out of my studio located in my home in Evanston Illinois. Try to Remember | Karen Perl&nbsp;will be exhibited in the Second Floor Atrium Gallery of the Art Center. The opening reception is free and open to the public. Try to Remember | Karen Perl

The Evanston Art Center (EAC) is excited to welcome the public to our upcoming exhibition,&nbsp;Leopold Segedin | A Habit of Art: Paintings from 2015 to the Present. The exhibition will be on display fromJuly 8 - August 10, 2025, and will be free and open to the public.Leopold Segedin is a Chicago-born painter (b. 1927) who has been exhibiting his work since 1944. His works have been shown at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Milwaukee Art Institute. At 97, Segedin currently lives and works in Evanston from his home studio. After retiring after 32 years of teaching in 1987, Segedin’s major retrospective&nbsp;I Remember&nbsp;was held in the Renaissance Court of the Chicago Cultural Center. He has since exhibited with a group called the ‘5’ at the Belzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, the Loyola University Art Gallery, the Ukrainian Institute of Fine Art, and Suburban Fine Art Center in Highland Park.Segedin has had nearly two dozen solo exhibitions in the Chicagoland area and his work has been recognized by several arts institutions including the Art Institute. “Trees, grasses, water, sun, stars, moon, clouds, rain, all are our friends. Nature embraces us, and we embrace nature. Women deserve to take up space.&nbsp;My name, Sholo, by definition, means “fire” in Sanskrit. I am a believer in the healing powers of nature and tie my appreciation for nature with my joy of being a woman. The power of nature is vast in my life: for healing, learning, creating art, and building community. I wanted to share my personal and artistic experiences with other creative women to hear and see their stories. This show is specially juried with women whose art practice and lives are strongly connected to nature and their femininity. The art will be displayed on a large scale to immerse the viewer in a curated environment.&nbsp;Women and nature are intrinsically linked. Both uphold the foundation of the human race. This show, Women In Nature: Taking Up Space, is meant to touch the audience with all of these traits and emotions, while at the same time creating a community to experience and reflect. Women in Nature: Taking up Space | 2025 Curatorial Fellowship Exhibition

CROSSINGS&nbsp;traverses the Museum’s campus and features several dynamic vehicle sculptures by Bernard Williams in Wilder Park, Hostetler Gallery and large paintings in the McCormick House. Through the artworks on view, the artist addresses the concept of mobility as both the physical movement forward and the human aspiration to rise to better circumstances.The Chicago-based artist has been making public murals and sculptures for over thirty years. Bold thick lines and generalized, flat shapes common in graphic illustration define his unique and playful sculptural style. Williams often researches and highlights little known or forgotten narratives in history to make his sculptures, paintings and murals, which offer new perspectives on the engineering innovations of the past and how they impact contemporary culture. The works are also a tribute to Black achievement in transportation and agriculture throughout American history. Pilot Bessie Coleman, NASCAR driver Wendell Scott, and the recent Black Farmers’ Settlement are some of the histories being honored in this exhibition. For Elmhurst, Williams also recognizes the lifetime achievements of the local NASCAR winner, Fred Lorenzen (1934-2024).CROSSINGS&nbsp;runs concurrently with the exhibition&nbsp;Legacies: New Views of the Elmhurst Art Collection, which features Williams’ small sculptures from the collection of Cleve Carney, along with dozens of other artists in the Museum’s collection.Curated by Allison Peters Quinn. Legacies: Selections from the Elmhurst Art Museum Permanent Collection&nbsp;features dozens of artists from Salvador Dali and Mies van der Rohe to Kay Rosen and Michiko Itatani drawn from the Elmhurst Art Museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition explores the relationships between artists, collectors, and museums that lead to larger, ongoing narratives connecting people across time and place.A regional center of 20th&nbsp;century American Art and Midcentury Design, the Elmhurst Art Museum Collection began in the 1990s and now includes approximately 1,000 works drawn from over 200 collections or donors, with a focus on modern and contemporary art works by Midwestern artists, architects, and designers that have exhibited at the museum, and furniture design items related to McCormick House.The exhibition will feature micro installations of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures from over a dozen collections donated to the Museum, and includes local, regional, national, and international artists.

Legacies: New Views of the Elmhurst Art Museum's Permanent Collection

Perspective Gallery is proud to present a new exhibit by photographers&nbsp;Howard Hart and Kathryn Rodrigues. Hart’s&nbsp;Small Moments: Images from Egypt&nbsp;explores people and places away from monumental sites and the chaos of tourism. Hart’s black and white photographs document his personal impressions of Egypt though visually engaging images of small moments from everyday life. Hart is a charter member of Perspective Gallery and works in both analog and digital media.Inspired by a line from a Mary Oliver poem,&nbsp;Every Day Has Something In It Whose Name is Forever,&nbsp;Rodrigues’ work explores time, perception, and the interplay of constraint and expansion. This series stems from a volume of daily photographs, beginning over three years ago, of a skylight in Rodrigues’ home. Presented in a variety of forms, from grids to interactive photo sculptures, this work plays with the notion of time presented as both rigid and fluid. It is an ongoing body of work that invites viewers to enjoy a moment of quiet introspection.

In the Shadow of Coal&nbsp;will highlight botanical species of the Waukegan Dunes, located along Lake Michigan and adjacent to a coal-fired power plant. The exhibition will draw attention to the environmental injustices caused by the continued contamination of this coal-fired power plant on people and the environment and the immense threat posed to Lake Michigan. The exhibition comprises traditional, contemporary, and abstract botanical art and will be curated through an open-call with three jurors: Heeyoung Kim (who leads the Botanical Academy at Brushwood), a representative from the Driehaus Museum, and a local arts leader from Waukegan. Onsite programming will include an opening and speaking program, an exhibition guide, and guided tours.

Artists in this exhibition blur the lines between representational and abstract approaches. They are open to seeing beyond the horizon, and are keenly aware of subtle shifts in color temperature, mood and atmosphere. Like the weather, the work conveys a variety of moods, which ranges from tranquil and calm to stormy. This exhibition addresses the fragile relationship humans have with water, our most precious natural resource. Our Biennial is one of the Midwest’s largest and most prestigious juried exhibitions, offering artists an opportunity to have their work viewed by three talented curators: Chanelle Lacy, Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie, Joe Lanasa, Director/Founder of Fulton Street Collective, and Cortney Lederer, Public Art Consultant and Educator. Our Biennial will be promoted and viewed by hundreds of visitors, including gallerists, curators, and collectors. Cash awards and cash equivalents will be presented at the artists’ reception. Awards, which may include Best of Show and Juror’s Merit categories, are given at the jurors’ discretion. From the final pool of selected applicants, the jurors will also award 3 artists, who have not exhibited at the Evanston Art Center in the past 5 years, with the opportunity to be included in an exhibition in our galleries. Chanelle Lacy is a curator, cultural producer, and Reiki Master. She is also the Director of Art Initiatives at Gertie and the fearless leader of EarlyWork! Passionate about bringing ambitious, rigorous, and challenging projects to life, Chanelle works closely with artists both emerging and established to expand not only their creative practices but the art historical canon at large. Her passion for art and her commitment to amplifying underrepresented and marginalized voices make her a true champion of the arts. Most recently she produced SKIN + MASKS, a blockbuster exhibition crafted in collaboration with musician and activist Vic Mensa, centering works by contemporary artists exploring the elusive essence of identity. Originally presented in a classic gallery setting, SKIN + MASKS traveled to Chicago’s famed Magnificent Mile for a six-month pop-up exhibition presented in partnership with EXPO Chicago and the City of Chicago. In 2021 she curated Realms of Refuge, a group exhibition focused on the alchemical processes that enable us to transcend our earthly entanglements to reach higher states of consciousness, embodiment, and expression. Chanelle forged her path in the arts working at a contemporary gallery where she lent her vision to the program for six years. During three years of her tenure, she held the position of Director. Chanelle continues to be a force, serving as a trusted advisor. Cortney Lederer is a public art consultant and educator with over twenty years of experience managing artistic programming for foundations and organizations. Cortney has curated installations by notable artists such as Jacob Hashimoto (2019) and Olafur Eliasson (2021) at th Willis Tower and Luftwerk at the landmark Chicago Board of Trade Building (2024). She served as the art advisor for E(art)H Chicago, (2023) an initiative supported by the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF), providing $700,000 in grants to artists to inspire new ways of thinking about environmental responsibility in neighborhoods across Chicago. This summer, she launched a new public art initiative for the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (2024) connecting people to nature through 30 art installations across the city. Cortney is currently serving as the public art consultant for the Chicago Park District to design and manage an RFP for artist responses to contested monuments on parkland through installations, onsite programming, and activations. She is also the Public Art Consultant for the City of Wichita, managing three, new public artworks for the Arkansas River Improvement Project. Most recently, she worked with a team of planning consultants hired by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) to develop a community-engaged, pilot cultural and historical marker program. This pilot program celebrates the city’s cultural heritage by sharing untold stories and events through artist-designed markers. Cortney is an Associate Professor, Adj., in the Arts Administration and Policy department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and serves on the board of Arts of Life and Every House Has a Door. Joe Lanasa is one of the founding members and the current director of the Fulton Street Collective. He created FSC in late 2002, along with his amazingly talented friend, Anna Fermin. Their original vision still holds true today, which is to host a community of creative, talented people, and give them the resources they need to support and cultivate their art so that they can enrich the lives of others and become part of the greater community. Joe is also a street poet, songwriter, rock musician singer, and guitarist, performing in mostly Chicago-area clubs for over ten years now. His musical influences include a crazy blend of brilliant performers, including Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Scott Momenthy, Iggy Pop, early Springsteen, Marty Robbins, Elvis, Van Morrison, and Bob Marley. <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.theccma.org/hokusai" target="_blank">Details here</a> The Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA) and McAninch Arts Center (MAC) present “Hokusai and Ukiyo-e: The Floating World, Artworks from the Chiossone Collection” May 31 – Sept. 21, 2025. The exhibition will feature a collection of 53 works of art and 13 artifacts that has never been seen before in the U.S. More than a museum show, this arts center experience will immerse guests in Japanese Edo culture through several interactive exhibits, from a peaceful outdoor Japanese garden to an anime exhibit. Widely considered as one of the most recognizable images in the world, the exhibition will feature Hokusai's iconic masterpiece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. In addition, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view nine original works by the legendary artist. There will also be 17 works by Hiroshige and works by 15 of their contemporaries.&nbsp; The exhibition is organized by the Cleve Carney Museum of Art, with works from the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art of Genoa, Italy that was originally collected by Edoardo Chiossone (1833-1898), whose collection is known worldwide for the quality of art and its remarkable state of conservation. The featured ukiyo-e collection on loan will be curated by professor and art historian Rossella Menegazzo of The University of Milan as part of the larger exhibition at the MAC and CCMA, curated by&nbsp;Justin Witte.&nbsp; TicketsTickets are now on sale.
